⟐ APPEARANCE
Three old scars mark his face. One crosses his left cheek, another rests above his left eye, and a third sits beneath his right eye. All are long healed and faded rather than prominent. Years of combat have left further marks across his body, particularly his exposed arms.
His current robes retain the traditional layered structure and earthy colours of Jedi attire, though Jand has adapted them toward his own martial preferences. Tan and muted brown inner layers are worn beneath a sleeveless rust-brown outer garment, leaving his arms exposed. Dark leather bracers protect his forearms without limiting movement. His clothing is practical, mobile and largely unadorned, suited more to a duelist than a ceremonial Jedi.
⟐ PERSONALITY
Experience has tempered what was once a much quicker instinct toward violence. Jand is still entirely willing to fight, and kill, when he believes circumstances require it, but years among the Jedi have taught him that restraint is not indecision. He increasingly listens, observes and assesses before committing himself. Once that decision has been made, however, he rarely hesitates.
Diplomacy remains unnatural to him. Jand would still find a duel considerably simpler than a political negotiation, but he no longer dismisses such responsibilities as pointless. With many older Jedi having followed different paths, he has gradually found himself among the more experienced members of the New Jedi Order and has accepted duties he never expected to possess.
Trust comes slowly. Those who earn it tend to receive it deeply. Jand values loyalty, demonstrated competence and consistency, and considers chosen bonds with much the same seriousness as blood clan.
His manner is usually restrained. He often becomes very still while assessing a situation, favours nods and raised eyebrows over exaggerated reactions, and tends to work his jaw when uncomfortable or uncertain. Genuine smiles are generally small and reserved for people he trusts.
Away from conflict, Jand retains a strong interest in engineering and mechanics. Complex machines, weapons and well-built structures can draw far more visible curiosity from him than he usually intends to show.
⟐ STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS
▲ Speed and agility - Nagai reflexes, natural speed and a lean athletic build lend themselves to rapid movement, precision and acrobatic combat.
▲ Tutaminis - Jand possesses an unusually strong natural aptitude for absorbing and redirecting energy through the Force, and has learned to use that absorbed energy to reinforce other Force applications.
▲ Mechanics and engineering - Weapons, machinery and fabrication come naturally to him. Jand has constructed and modified several of his own weapons and is capable of quickly assessing unfamiliar technology.
▲ Combat experience - Years spent fighting the Brotherhood of the Maw, Sith forces and other threats have given Jand considerable practical battlefield experience.
─ Average raw Force capability - Jand has never possessed extraordinary natural power in the Force. Discipline, experience and Tutaminis compensate for what he lacks in raw strength.
─ Strict honour - His personal code provides clarity, but can also make him rigid when others do not share the same expectations.
─ Pragmatic lethality - Jand does not consider killing inherently incompatible with being a Jedi when no better option remains. This can place him at odds with more orthodox or idealistic Jedi.
▼ Slow to trust - Jand does not give confidence easily, particularly where motives or loyalties remain uncertain.
▼ Freedom - The loss of personal agency or control remains one of his deepest fears.
▼ Diplomacy - He has improved considerably, but political nuance and indirect communication remain far less comfortable than decisive action.
▼ Blaster weapons - Jand remains below average with conventional blaster weaponry.
▼ Long war - Years of sustained conflict have left their mark. Rest does not always come easily, and Jand can struggle to fully disengage from vigilance.
⟐ BIOGRAPHY
Jand Talo was born and raised on Saijo within Clan Talo, a first-circle Nagai family steeped in the martial traditions of their people. Independence, loyalty to family and personal honour were taught early, alongside combat meditation, physical discipline and weapons training.
He took naturally to that life. Over more than a decade Jand developed into a focused and fearless young warrior, trained to regard violence less as something inherently cruel and more as a tool whose morality depended upon purpose, discipline and consequence.
His Force sensitivity was discovered later. Clan Talo encouraged him to seek out the Jedi, not because Jand possessed any particular spiritual calling, but because understanding the ability offered another way to strengthen himself and honour his family.
PADAWAN
Jand's introduction to the Jedi was not seamless.
He passed the Order's testing and entered as a Padawan, but much of Jedi philosophy initially struck him as inefficient. Meditation intended for reflection felt less useful than the combat meditation of his upbringing. Negotiation often seemed an unnecessarily complicated alternative to decisive action. His willingness to kill where necessary also sat uneasily beside some Jedi teachings.
There was another frustration. Jand's connection to the Force was not exceptional.
Compared with naturally powerful Padawans, many applications came slowly. What he lacked in raw potential, however, he compensated for through discipline and a remarkable aptitude for Tutaminis. Energy absorption became the foundation upon which he could reinforce otherwise ordinary Force ability.
Combat was another matter entirely.
Jand's Nagai upbringing translated readily into lightsaber instruction, particularly Shii-Cho and Makashi, and he advanced rapidly as a duelist. Eventually he became Padawan to Jedi Master Caltin Vanagor, who expanded Jand's understanding of both lightsaber combat and what it meant to actually live as a Jedi rather than simply fight beside them.
THE MAW WAR
Jand's apprenticeship unfolded during war.
He fought throughout the conflict with the Brotherhood of the Maw, beginning with the defence of Ilum shortly after joining the Order and continuing through battles, rescue operations and investigations across Alliance space.
Metellos became one of the defining confrontations of those years. Jand faced the Dark Side Master Tegan Starfall and survived a brutal encounter that ended with severe injuries from Force lightning. Recovery did little to deter him. He returned to the frontlines, continued his training and eventually fought through the closing campaigns of the war, including Exegol.
Those years changed him.
The young Nagai who had once dismissed much of Jedi philosophy gradually came to understand that restraint could demand as much strength as violence, and that responsibility extended beyond simply defeating the opponent in front of him.
After the final stages of the Maw conflict and further operations within Sith territory, Caltin Vanagor summoned Jand back to the Jedi and formally knighted him.
Knighthood did not lead Jand toward a quiet life.
He spent an extended period operating along and within Sith-held territory, protecting Alliance interests and confronting threats away from the centre of the New Jedi Order. By the time news of Coruscant's fall reached him and drew him back, both the galaxy and the Order he remembered had changed considerably.
Many senior Jedi had left to pursue other paths. Others were scattered by war and political upheaval.
Without particularly seeking the role, Jand found himself becoming one of the Order's more experienced Knights.
Responsibility followed.
He took part in the effort to locate and detain Braze, approaching the situation as an issue of justice rather than vengeance. The objective was peaceful capture first, violence only if no alternative remained, though Jand made equally clear that he would not hesitate if outside influence threatened to seize Braze's mind.
That dispute ultimately created strain with Jasper Kai'el and others close to the situation, reinforcing a lesson Jand had come to understand increasingly well: the correct course of action did not always leave every relationship intact.
RESPONSIBILITY
The dwindling New Jedi Order increasingly required Jand to perform duties far removed from the straightforward role of warrior.
He became part of the delegation sent to negotiate with the Lightsworn. Diplomacy remained uncomfortable, but he accepted that personal disagreement mattered little beside the growth of the dark side across the galaxy. Unity, or at least cooperation, had become necessary.
When dark side forces later breached the Jedi Temple on Ilum, Jand returned instinctively to something more familiar.
He warned other Jedi away from danger, moved to protect Padawans and younglings, and confronted the attackers with his lightsaber still unlit. They were given an opportunity to leave.
Only after that opportunity would there be a fight.
SWORD OF THE JEDI
The war continued to demand more.
Jand participated in preparations surrounding PROJECT: STARDUST and later joined the defence of Atrisia as the Galactic Empire brought overwhelming force against the world.
During the conflict, he took upon himself the mantle of Sword of the Jedi.
It was a title that suited the Nagai perhaps more naturally than most. Jand had always understood himself as a weapon, forged first by Clan Talo and later refined by the Jedi. What had changed was his understanding of what a weapon was for.
Strength without judgement was simply destruction.
A blade mattered because of the hand that chose when to draw it.
PRESENT
The New Jedi Order remains diminished and uncertain, and Jand has continued to act where needed as both Knight and representative.
He has begun rebuilding connections with other Jedi traditions, including acting as a New Jedi delegate during contact with the wider Jedi Order. Such duties still feel strange to someone who once believed most disagreements could be resolved more efficiently with a duel, but Jand no longer mistakes discomfort for incapability.
He remains martial, severe and direct.
He also listens more than he once did.
He protects before he attacks.
And when the moment finally comes to draw the blade, there is rarely uncertainty left.
⟐ THE FORCE
Tutaminis
Jand's connection to the Force has always been comparatively ordinary in raw terms. Rather than attempting to compete with naturally powerful Force users, he developed around discipline, physical ability and the one area in which his talent proved exceptional: energy absorption.
Tutaminis became both defence and fuel. Jand can absorb forms of energy and redirect that power, or use it to temporarily strengthen his ability to channel the Force. This approach complements his martial style, allowing him to remain physically engaged rather than relying primarily upon telekinesis or overt Force techniques.
LIGHTSABER FORMS
I. Shii-Cho - Nagai martial foundations, Jedi Order
II. Makashi - Nagai duelling foundations, Jedi Order
III. Soresu - Jedi Order, battlefield experience
IV. Ataru - Jedi Order, battlefield experience
V. Djem So - Caltin Vanagor, battlefield experience
VI. Niman - Caltin Vanagor, battlefield experience
VII. Vaapad - Caltin Vanagor, battlefield experience
Jand has trained extensively across all seven recognised forms, though he approaches them less as isolated disciplines and more as tools to be selected and combined according to circumstance.
⟐ EQUIPMENT
Jand's primary weapon is a complex variable-hilt lightsaber of his own construction. The weapon contains two blue kyber crystals, a meditation crystal, phobium emitters, non-dimetris circuitry and adjustable focusing lenses. Its modular hilt can be configured as a single blade, double-bladed saber or separated for Jar'Kai.
Backup Lightsaber
Jand retains his earlier lightsaber as a secondary weapon.
Clan Talo Longsword
An heirloom weapon of Clan Talo, constructed from songsteel with cortosis weave and a monomolecular edge. Jand later modified the blade with a collapsible mechanism.
