COMBAT INFORMATION:
Strengths:
  • Highly Versatile: With their size and composition the GFL Rifle Squad is a high versatile unit and therefore able to accomplish a wide variety of missions, be it clearing an building complex to defending that same said complex
  • Well Trained: Many members of the Legion are many military veterans and those that aren't are well trained during their initial training and are then further trained by the more veteran members of their squads
Weaknesses:
  • Independent Operation: Rifle squads are often deployed independently without any other supporting units and are at a disadvantages when facing larger units
  • Reloading: The GFL primarily uses slugthrowers and while there are some upsides to this the downside is they require reloading more frequently, something an enemy could exploit
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
With the Legion growing in size, scope, capability and reputation there began a rather large campaign of restructuring within the organization, turning them less into a relatively cobbled together mercenary organization and more into a well oiled and structured private military organization. While many were organizational changes, such as the implementation of an official rank structure, most had to do with the actual units that made up the combat arm of the Legion, where a bevy of logistical, organisational and doctrinal changes were made. The first type of unit to be affected by these changes were the Rifle Squads.

Logistically the Rifle Squad was changed with the replacement of the open market weaponry they were equipped with and issuance of infantry weapons purpose built for them. These weapons fell into two categories, standard and heavy, the standard being weapons chambered in the 6.8x49mm caliber and the heavy being chambered in 7.62x63mm caliber. To add to this a new sidearm, version of the fighting knife and several other edged weapons were implemented as well as a single shot disposable rocket launcher for dealing with armor or fortified positions, a utility shotgun for things such as breaching and even a multi-tool for use by combat engineers.

When it came to the organisational changes for the Rifle Squad this for the most part came down to the assignment of ranks to each member of the squad. Squad Leaders were made Sergeants, Assistant Squad Leaders were made Corporals and Team Leaders were made Lance Corporals, this rounding out the command portion of the Rifle Squad. Combat Medics, Snipers, Designated Marksmen and Automatic Riflemen were all made Senior Legionnaires due to the more advanced training necessitated by their weapons. Finally the Assistant Automatic Riflemen and Riflemen were made either Legionnaire First Class' or Legionnaire's.

Lastly came the doctrinal changes of how the Rifle Squads operate in the field. Rifle Squad fireteams are further split into sections: an assault section and a support section. The assault section consists of the team leader, combat medic, combat engineer, two riflemen and the team assault AUGSV. The support section consists of the squad leader, for Aurek team, or assistant squad leader, for Besh team, the designated marksman, automatic rifleman, assistant automatic rifleman, sniper and team cargo carrier AUGSV. This change allows the Rifle Squad to be even more flexible when attacking and means that at least one section is always providing covering fire while the other is moving.

Overall this is a nicely done submission. I have only one minor quibble before approval. In the Weaknesses section, the first weakness is that each squad is small. However, under Unit Size, you describe it as a Medium-size unit. Further, I would argue that "can be overwhelmed by a larger force" is true of any unit. Could we come up with a more unique weakness? A minor tweak that could work is to say that the squads frequently operate independently, making them vulnerable to being surrounded. I think that gets the spirit of what you were describing.

One other thing: under Affiliation, please provide a link to the Galactic Foreign Legion.
