The young Echani known as Braze was, at present, finishing his pre-battle preparations in the quiet of his quarters, approaching the task with a ritualistic sincerity as he prepared for war.
Despite tradition referring to it simply as an
anointing oil, the preparation itself was closer to a rich moisturizing cream: light enough to absorb readily, yet substantial enough to leave a protective layer over the skin. It would serve the decidedly practical purpose of keeping him comfortable through prolonged wear, beneath a tightly fitted body glove, where hours of heat, movement, pressure, and trapped moisture could leave even well-conditioned skin rubbed raw.
The cream carried a carefully composed fragrance of sweet pea and violets over warm sandalwood, softened by the richer perfume of Corellian rose and the gentle sweetness of
Uneti blossoms.
Beneath those softer notes rested the preparation's more purposeful ingredients: carefully measured traces of refined
Nevoota stimulant pollen and
Kibnon stimulant pollen, with only the faintest addition of
Pol pollen folded into the mixture. The ratios were intended to lend a subtle edge to alertness and physical readiness without allowing the stronger compounds to dominate the preparation.
Braze worked the warmed cream slowly across his willowy shoulders, along his arms and chest, and over any area where the body glove would sit closest or endure the greatest friction beneath the armour. Most of it disappeared beneath his touch, leaving his skin supple with only the faintest sheen. The fragrance lingered close against his form, accompanied by a subtle shimmer of body glitter he had added to the batch for purely aesthetic purposes.
A slender hand selected and dipped a large, fluffy powder puff into a nearby container before padding himself over, dusting on a soft, rain-scented powder in a careful layer over the oil, the fragrance settling into it to create a sleek finish while the fine dust absorbed whatever moisture remained that hadn't already been taken in by his pale flesh, leaving a faint, velvety finish that would help the body glove glide more comfortably over his frame.
He slipped his lithe frame into the body glove and made the necessary adjustments for comfort.
The smooth material passed over freshly conditioned flesh, concealing pale alabaster skin beneath the snug black suit. Once the seals were secured, he twisted at the waist, rolled his shoulders, and stretched his arms overhead, allowing his body to settle naturally into the supportive structure woven throughout its design.
The preparation of oil and powder had made the fit considerably kinder for what might become hours spent sealed inside it, protecting against the persistent abrasion of movement without compromising the suit's close precision as a comfort layer between him and the armor to come...
One seal followed another until the final one gave its muted confirmation. His once-blaring fragrance was thoroughly subdued beneath the fabric, leaving him scented from head to toe, the floral notes held close against his skin rather than trailing openly through the room.
He drew on his reinforced combat boots first, their soles engineered to find purchase across everything from polished durasteel to ash-slick terrain. Heat-resistant layering ran throughout the seams, with sealed ankle joints locking snugly into the lower leg armor to prevent debris, smoke, or flame from finding an easy path inside. Magnetic grips nested discreetly within the tread for stability in low gravity or against violent changes in momentum. Across the outer plating remained faint scorch etchings from earlier engagements; little scars he had never bothered to polish away.
Next to be donned came the chest plate of his
Phoenix Fire Armor, its layered composite construction shaped to protect without sacrificing the mobility upon which he so often and readily relied upon.
Across its surface rested the stylized phoenix of his heraldry, rendered in subdued azure against a sable field. Beneath the plating, life-support regulation, encrypted communications, and environmental controls engaged in sequence, along with the interface that would eventually populate the display of his helmet. Defensive emitters remained dormant beneath the shell, awaiting the moment when conventional armor alone ceased to be sufficient.
For a little while, however, Braze's attention settled on something decidedly less martial.
He inspected the perfectly manicured onyx-black coating of his
Nite Night Nails, turning one hand beneath the light to admire the long nails fashioned into delicate little points. Satisfied, those finely clawed fingers reached for a decorative
Lightveil Circlet, which he fastened carefully around his neck before smoothing it into place.
Only then did he return to the business of arming himself turning to the task of donning his gauntlets next.
Braze seated a
Feilong Repulsor into each palm, testing the fittings before closing the armored housings around them. A
Vixen's Vambrace locked over his left forearm, followed by the compact mechanisms of several
Phantom Mist Projectors, each checked before being returned to standby.
His right arm received the
Saber-Claws Gauntlet, as he flexed his fingers slowly. The machinery answered each movement without hesitation. All was in working order, maintaining the gear so often had paid off.
There was something distinctly Mandalorian in the philosophy of it all: carrying solutions upon one's own body, each tool close enough to become instinct rather than inventory. The vambraces housed additional implements beneath their armored shells, including a recessed
flame projector, compact
cutting equipment for breaching, and a tightly coiled
grappling system capable of rapid deployment. Tactile controls lined the inner wrists where his fingers could find them without forcing him to abandon his stance, while reinforced plating ensured that even emptied gauntlets remained useful at close quarters.
Segmented shoulder plates settled into position above them with muted mechanical clicks. Their overlapping construction flared subtly outward to turn incoming force aside while anchoring the upper harness beneath.
The reinforced war belt followed, cinching tightly around his waist as magnetic catches snapped into their prepared positions. A low-profile holster rode along one hip, while magnet-locked pouches occupied nearly every remaining scrap of practical space.
Braze had packed them with his usual interpretation of
prepared.
Among the assortment of compact tools and assorted 'toys' rested three
TG-02 Trihexalon Grenades, conventional
Thermal Detonators,
C-22 Fragmentation Grenades,
G-20 Glop Grenades, and
WW-41 CryoBan Grenades, the latter selected with particular care given the reports filtering in from the fighting beyond the Safeport.
Medical contingencies occupied their own protected compartments:
Aspha Serum,
Bota M9-A2 berries, and
Trauma Spray, all positioned where he could reach them quickly.
Then there was the
thermite. Five pounds of it neatly wrapped in a paper outer shell of a bag tucked in to it's own fire proof air tight pouch.
Braze regarded the bag for a moment before finding it an appropriate home among the rest of his equipment.
Behind him, the structured back panel engaged next, its rigid frame joining seamlessly with the chest plate through interlocking straps and load-bearing couplings. The system drew the considerable weight of his equipment inward and upward, distributing it across his small frame rather than permitting any single point to bear the burden.
He shifted experimentally from one foot to the other.
What should have felt cumbersome instead settled around him as controlled balance. Plates, harness, belt, gauntlets, and body glove ceased to feel as separate pieces as their systems synchronized around him, becoming something closer to a single light exoskeletal rig.
A compact jetpack locked into the reinforced back panel with a firm magnetic clamp and mechanical latching system, its interface immediately syncing with the suit's power distribution and stability controls. Over it, he layered a fire-resistant cloak, its treated fabric designed to resist heat and combustion, cut with long slits to accommodate the pack's vents and preserve full range of motion without disruption.
Before reaching for the helmet, Braze returned his attention to the mirror and drew out a small pot of vibrant crimson war paint. With careful fingertips within the gauntlets he selected a paint brush; he traced the rich red pigment around his somber jade-green eyes, lining them in sharp, deliberate strokes that followed their natural shape before extending slightly toward his temples. The color stood vividly against his alabaster complexion, framing that muted green with a martial severity that seemed almost at odds with the delicate features beneath it. He studied the result for a quiet moment, made one small correction beneath the corner of an eye, then set the pigment aside.
There remained only the helmet as he drew it up and secured it in place. He checked his appearance once in the mirror before departing to join the others.
He slotted in fresh batteries as he walked, bringing up his tactical feed as the helmet systems came online. Plague data scrolled across his HUD as he made his way toward the hangar. He hummed a song he'd learned from the men that
