A Butterfly testing a prototype version of the FAE/U-03 "Aeshma" Hybrid Propulsion System
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Unit Name: Butterfly Corps
  • Affiliation: House Io
  • Classification: Zero-G Infantry │ Aerial Infantry │ Aquatic Infantry
  • Description: An offshoot of the Siren Corps, like their sister unit, the Butterfly Corps is an all-female infantry formation primarily composed of strand-casts produced via Engineered Variance Cloning. However, where the Sirens function as generalist infantry capable of fulfilling a number of roles, the Butterflies are an elite specialist formation, focused on zero-G, aerial, and aquatic operations. Given the demanding nature of space, aerial, and aquatic combat on the body, especially pertaining to g-forces, the Butterflies are chemically enhanced. It goes without saying that this has given them a reputation as junkies. In truth, their drug and stimulant use is limited to almost exclusively to combat, with tight controls on their consumption.

Much like their sister unit, the Butterfly Corps place a high emphasis on discipline, loyalty, and professionalism. However, they also maintain a strong sense of pride, which at times, can develop into arrogance. The belief that they have the most dangerous and demanding job in House Io’s military is not an uncommon one within the Butterfly Corps. This belief can develop into a sneering superiority over ground troopers, who are not infrequently referred to as “mud moles”. Nevertheless, any Butterfly who is caught underestimating an enemy ground trooper will be quick to find herself corrected.

Finally, Butterflies are free to customize their armor how they see fit, so long as it remains within certain regulations. Most display dark blue highlights on their suits, matching the colors of House Io.

COMBAT INFORMATION:
Strengths:
  • Speed Kills - The ability to fly in and of itself provides a number of boons to the Butterflies. They are among the fastest units in almost any given battlefield and as such, they can take advantage of this speed to dictate the pace of an engagement or alternatively, to end it entirely. In other words, speed kills.
  • Juiced to the Gills - The Butterfly Corps rely on chemical over cybernetic enhancement, the latter of which is only used to allow their bodies to tolerate high doses of combat stimulants, which might otherwise be fatal. These drugs and cocktails are concentrated to the lethal edge, enhancing a Butterfly’s abilities to the same degree as an advanced cybernetic suite, making them faster, stronger, tougher, more focused, more accurate, and more resilient, than most conventional troops. In addition, the drug processing implants Butterflies receive allow them to survive Cyclone doses. However, this drug is reserved for only the most desperate battles, as while it is fatal to others, for Butterflies it has a long recovery time and a host of negative side effects.
  • Catfight - Trained with a particular emphasis on air-to-air and dogfighting techniques against enemy jumptroopers and zero-G units, the Butterfly Corps are the weapon of choice to bring to bear against these aforementioned units. With their training in aerial, underwater, and zero-G acrobatics, they are extremely agile in the air and generally have the means to outmaneuver hostile flying infantry, a capability which is further aided by their light battle suits.
Weaknesses:
  • Artillery - Lacking the means to fulfill this role on their own, The Butterfly Corps generally depend on other units for artillery and indirect fire support.
  • Long Range - Due to their nigh-exclusive use of gauntlet-mounted and armor-integrated weapon systems, the Butterflies suffer in many types of long-range engagements. As these weapon classes tend to not have the range of handheld weapons, Butterflies are often caught in situations where they must either close the distance while under heavy fire or retreat, especially if the environment lacks good cover.
  • Wings Clipped - Butterflies try not to stay in any one place for long, as they often lack the staying power of heavier units due to their emphasis on hit-and-run attacks, speed, and agility. If pinned down, especially in locations like tight ship corridors or indoor locations where just flying away isn’t a convenient option, they can be overwhelmed by units capable of bringing more firepower and armor to bear.
  • Open Sky - When operating in atmosphere, one of the hazards that Butterflies must face is the fact that there is generally no cover in open sky. While they are fast fliers, this lack of cover can make them easier to shoot down, especially when engaging ground units. As such, they will always take all practical steps to mitigate this risk, but it is impossible to eliminate entirely.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
In the aftermath of the Battle of Tython, it was noted that many of House Io’s existing military formations—including the Stormtrooper Corps and the Black Knights—were judged to be quite effective against Force-users. However, the military lacked a capable aerial and zero-G infantry unit. With this shortcoming in mind, the Butterfly Corps were conceived from the Siren Corps, initially formed from veteran Sirens who displayed an affinity towards aerial combat.

Training generally takes a full year and is considered to be quite hazardous. During this period, Cadets are taught a wide variety of skills, including aerial, zero-G, and underwater acrobatics and maneuvers, marksmanship, martial arts, hand-to-hand combat, and yet more. In addition, they also undergo an operation to have a number of cybernetics implanted which are designed to boost their body’s drug tolerance. It is through this that the Butterflies derive their enhanced capabilities, which are delivered via a cocktail of stimulants and drugs.

All in all, with their emphasis on aerial, space, and aquatic infantry combat, the Butterflies are hoped to satisfy a previously unfilled role in House Io’s military forces. They are expected to work alongside Nuetralizers, Sirens, Stormtroopers, and Black Knights, giving these units vertical cover and air support, while countering enemy jump troopers and jetpack units.

So long as the wings of the Butterflies remain intact, victory is all but assured!

Under Review Mellifluous Magenta Mellifluous Magenta

I really like this submission. It's nicely balanced and unique. You clearly put some work into finding all those bracer-mounted weapons!

I have just two quick asks in the Equipment section. First - you list standard issue for most equipment types, which is great! However, you list five different melee weapons. Is one type of energy sword standard-issue, or are they all just kind of handed out willy-nilly, you get what you get? Second, grenades. There are a lot of grenades in Star Wars; Wookieepedia lists ninety-eight of them. Can you be more specific about what the Butterflies carry? They've already got missiles, so what are the grenades adding? Are they glop, cryoban, incendiary, standard explosive? Specifics are appreciated!
