Faction The Gears of Industry : | The Exonerator [Contract] (Farworlds Alliance)

Lodd allowed the silence to settle within the conference room as he briefly looked at Alex Stern Alex Stern who was currently swirling whiskey in a crystal glass. Stern's counter to handle transport options via Outer Rim Resources was a direct ploy to undermine the Federation's exclusivity. He mentally added up the figures in his head, matching logistical assets, automated sensor picket probes and satellites against the heavy industrial manufacturing underneath his own control.

It was a close match in terms of raw resources though this line of thought was interrupted by Shuklaar Kyrdol Shuklaar Kyrdol intervention into the conversation. He made sure to mention Locke and Key's integrated transit network, the hyper gate system which Locke had developed cut down transport times considerably and made patrolling hyperspace routes a rather redundant affair.

Such a suggestion cut into his agenda, that being to monopolize and ultimately control the newly discovered government through shipping dependency. Before he could mention his approval about using the gates, the cathar Rara Gowisi Rara Gowisi threw out desperate accusations of backroom deals with the Dark Empire, a by now ancient Imperial Power that had once fought the Galactic Alliance.

He failed to see their relevance to this conversation, deducing that she was attempting to goad him into admitting they had funded Imperialism. He would not dignify this with a direct response, to defend oneself was to admit the accusation had weight. Any public records they may have been able to fish up were fabrications as the Federation did not leave a paper trail tying them to the Imperials, as such a move would be entirely foolish.

Fortunately Matthew of Valendale Matthew of Valendale was smart enough to dismiss the accusations leveled against the Viceroy. "Thank you Lord Valendale for maintaining the decorum of these proceedings." Lodd responded with relaxed posture, "We will not dignify the accusations from Si Tech's representative but will remind them that our company is neutral" No one could argue with this since he often clarified it to the Galactic Senate whenever they raised concerns about him.

An idea came to mind, taken from his favorite tactic to use when in a bit of a jam. "I find myself entirely in agreement with your caution. In fact to ensure absolute transparency for the Farwords Alliance. I recommend that all corporations participating in this venture go through equally rigorous investigations to ensure that this new government knows all the facts before proceeding." Step one was to agree entirely but then turn around the suggest that all companies within this room undergo the same investigation in order to buy him time.

"We must ensure we do not target any one specific entity at this conference out of bias. Surely, the Farworlds Alliance is not speciesist against the Federation, given the fact that our executive bodies employ mostly Neimoidians. Fairness, after all, is the bedrock of good business." Step two was to paint himself as the victim of bias by explaining that if his company was targeted, it meant that the Farworlds was speciesist against the Neimoidians and their culture which only worked if the government was democratic and cared about image. Which they were according to his information.

He reviewed the holographic data stream Matthew had pushed across the table. The amended terms materialized in crisp blue text: the ten-year development contract, the right of first refusal on connected expansions, the guaranteed minimum annual volume with shortfall compensation, and liability strictly paired with control.

Lodd unlinked his fingers, leaning forward slightly to rest his forearms on the glossy surface of the table. His mind reeled back in the losses from the hypergate revelation and balanced them against the guaranteed minimum volume. The exclusivity on their own built infrastructure was standard, but the right of first refusal and the shortfall compensation changed the math entirely. It transformed a risky frontier investment into an insulated, low-risk revenue stream backed by sovereign guarantees.

"The Trade Federation accepts these terms. We will provide the principal capital, the modular processing units, and the industrial corridor under this ten-year framework. We welcome the integration of the Locke and Key ITN for transport security, provided our operational boundaries regarding the one-point-five percent service fee remain intact at the transfer points." He looked toward the lawyer, Clairmont, and then back to Matthew.

Well, it wasn't everything, but it was on its way to being everything he'd asked for. And doing it in stages was smart. It meant that ORR could develop the land at a natural pace rather than paying the lease on land not yet producing. Non-continuous segments were a disappointment but could be overcome. The ninety-nine-year lease with renewal options also assured Alex that Outer Rim Resources wouldn't have the assets and development pulled away as soon as the building finished. He nodded his agreement. "I find these terms more than acceptable." But it was what Matthew said next that caught his attention.

He drew his glass of whiskey up to his lips, holding it there as he listened. A network of stations and their logistics. He took a thoughtful sip, thinking things through. "Given the deal for agricultural land we're finalizing, it would seem natural to also feed the stations from such. Or at least our other holdings which are already producing." He had to give it a try, even though he wasn't that personally invested in reselling to the stations. Vertical consolidation aside, he'd planned on mostly selling to the planetary populace and throughout the Outer Rim, the company's usual territory. Far more interesting was the possibility of new stations. The usual orbital commerce freighter stop and refueling station didn't sound like it'd do, and the company had more than a few designs on the drawing board he was eager to see made. The prospects of establishing a whole range of stations was also enough to distract him from toying with Lodd Grimmin and the Trade Federation now that everyone was getting their piece instead of squawking over trying to rule the planet through industry.

He was horribly late. So late it sounded as if most of the meeting was wrapping up.

Makai regarded this as a negative and a positive. Negative because there may not be many, if any, contracts left to consider. Positive because it meant there might be a way to circumnavigate any competition. The Trade Federation was already weaseling their way around the mining industry from what he could hear. Might be an issue where he would have to pivot and get creative in showing his value in the industry. Unlike the Trade Federation, he also invested heavily in agriculture.

Smoothing his navy tie, his steps slowed as he approached the crowd. Immediately he recongized Mister Stern and of course the infamous Grimmin. Braze was another. Beyond that he was sure he had heard their names but did not know their faces.

"Apologies for being late. Bit of a hold up at my previous location...Any room left to talk business? Either with the government or with my fellow corporatists?"

Braze had been jotting down ideas concerning the work requested of his holdings alongside Alex Stern Alex Stern when Makai approached. He glanced up from the datapad.

"Welcome. You can certainly join us," Braze offered. "I was hoping you might stop by the summit, actually."

He set the datapad down upon the table.

"Would farming interest you? Not tending the fields yourself, perhaps, but establishing agricultural operations on Veridia."

Farming would be for the government. For his own business though, Makai would have to renegotiate the rights to planets the Trade Federation was avoiding for mining purposes. A survey would have to he conducted with all the facts before he could make that pitch however.

"Are you looking for a total set up so the government can take over? I recently purchased Lythos IX, an agriworld in the Corporate Sector. I've been working on a few experimental designs and processes. You would be welcomed to come tour what I have been up to..."

Perhaps he was wrong though, so he made sure to cover all bases.

"Or are you looking for Aina Holdings to grow the food for the territory? Either locally or back in our preferred regions? If I am being honest it may be wiser for a total set up and a training of your people...Aina can be hired on as a consultant after the initial setting up period."

That was...easier than he was expecting it to be. Especially when the topic of problematic alliances came up. "So we're all in agreement then? Excellent," he said conclusively. That simplified his life and the life of those under him considerably. He was sure Nyles Kote Nyles Kote would be ecstatic to hear that, that simplified the logistics their logistics considerably.

That was when the newcomer walked in. Makai Dashiel. Well, in the very least this wasn't going to be like the last time a few of them had gotten together to discuss corporate matters. No ori'buyce, kih'kovid. Jetii this time. "Mr. Dashiel," started Shuklaar. "Good of you to join us. Welcome."

"What we're looking for is the infrastructure, but if you can move enough of the product without cutting too much into your own margin, you're welcome to,"
said Shuklaar. "We can come to an agreement on the rate once we come to an agreement on the arrangement itself." Shuklaar was in little mood for any further jostling on the matter. Though the agreement that followed had indeed gone easier than he had thought it would.

"The ITN is our preferred method of conveyance as we have all just agreed, minimal risk and time wasted in transit, do you have any objections to this?" he asked, more to check to see that they were all still on the same page rather than for any other reason. Frankly, at this juncture, he was not inclined to hear arguments for any other arrangements. That last thing he would be party to was any suggestion that they would have to compensate anyone for any measures they would have to take to cater to their preferences.

Braze considered the distinction, his gaze lowering briefly toward the notes gathered across his datapad.

"I already have farms and orchards surrounding my palace on Veridia, and much of what they produce goes toward feeding the sanctuary and nearby communities."

He turned the datapad across the table, bringing up the preliminary plans he had been working through alongside Alex.

"What I'm interested in is expanding beyond what I already have. Larger agricultural operations, self-contained biodomes… something mobile." His fingers shifted across the display, drawing the design for the Biome Skyhook into view. "This is still being developed, but the intent is for it to cultivate food in orbit and carry agricultural systems to settlements that cannot readily support their own."

Braze looked back to Makai. "I would be interested in touring Lythos IX and seeing what you've been working on. Perhaps you might tell me whether any of your designs could be adapted for something like this… or whether the entire idea is impractical before I begin pouring resources into it."

"Oh...uh, no."

Caught off guard, he wasn't sure why there would be an issue with the shipping involved if granted a contract. In nearly every case his clients secured their own shipping unless hashed out ahead of time. Most days he only shipped mining materials on his own due to the nature of ore and minerals. Perhaps there had been an issue with this government before.

"I am unfamiliar with any mobile type of farming and I am afraid I could not be of any real assistance. I do have an experimental planetary control system for optimized crop harvest, and you are more than welcomed to visit what we've been doing out in the Corporate Sector."

He paused for a moment. Farms outside a castle were nice, but not long term.

"Maybe even encourage finding a planet to turn into an agriworld of your own for the government."

Braze studied the figures for another moment before closing the projection.

"Then perhaps I'm asking the wrong tool to do too many jobs," he conceded. "An agriworld makes more sense at that scale."

He set the datapad aside gently.

"I'd still like to see Lythos IX. If Aina Holdings can help us identify a suitable world, establish the infrastructure, and train our people to
maintain it themselves, I'd be interested.
.. I'd rather pay someone to teach us how to feed ourselves than pay them to feed us forever.

Matthew, Mister Dashiell's principal business is mining I believe? Perhaps there's another contract here?"

Braze glanced between them.
