VARIN MORTIFER

Equipment: Durum Mantle | Black Blade of Chandrila | Eye of The Dragon | Heavy Sith Mace | Cross Guard Broadsaber | Wyrmfang

Now that he thought about it, he had not really eaten all day. Sometimes that happened, he would simply forget until just before going to sleep and even rarer he would stay up to cook something.

“That sounds like a good idea.”

His gaze looked over to the food that lay in wait for what was about to approach. Varin had a big appetite.

One of the main reasons he just simply did not want to cook when he was about to rest for the night. A meal for him would take a good chunk of time.

“You should have seen her in the Sithspawn race. From what I remember she did not do too well, but at least she didn't throw up.”

A small smirk left him as he stepped out of the pool. Steam still trailed off of him as it met the cooler air. He stood watching the exchange of every person in the immediate area before he moved with her.

“And sometimes it is best to toughen up younger students. Even if it is for them to learn their place. I have had to do that a few times.”

His eyes met with the line up of meats that sat drenched in spices before them. His hand came up and plucked another drink from a passing servant. Some shelled fruit with a small umbrella. Reminded him of seeing Mercy with such a drink.

“Hm. What is the purpose of the umbrella? I never understood it.”

When Kaelen admitted the tattoo artist likely wouldn't have much choice with both of them arriving together, Seris nodded in complete agreement. "No." She said it matter-of-factly. "He really wouldn't." There was no malice behind the statement. Simply certainty. "If I decide I want tattoos..." She looked briefly down one arm as if already imagining them there. "...he'll open the shop."

Seris followed Kaelen's gaze across the gathering until she found the pair he'd been looking toward. Recognition came almost immediately. A bright smile spread across her face. "Oh!" She pointed openly, unconcerned whether either of them noticed. "Your sponsor is hanging around with one of my teachers."

Her finger shifted ever so slightly toward Arris. "That woman." She leaned back into her chair again. "She taught one of my favorite lessons." A grin tugged at the corners of her mouth. "Dirty fighting." The memory alone was enough to amuse her. "It wasn't about forms or honor or any of that." She waved a dismissive hand. "It was about winning."

"Coruscant Academy is... different." Seris searched for the right words. "They don't really try to make everyone the same." She supposed that was just the nature of the Covenant. "If you're good at something, they push you toward it." She shrugged. "For me..." Her grin widened. "They mostly encourage fighting." There wasn't the slightest complaint in her voice. "Turns out I'm pretty good at it."

The conversation drifted naturally toward his cooking, and Seris couldn't help but giggle when Kaelen claimed he didn't really have a choice when it came to her desire for him to cook for her..

"Smart." She tilted her head. "And cute." The compliment came just as effortlessly as all the others.

He spoke of enjoying fights where something was at stake, and Seris nodded thoughtfully. "I don’t get that. Something I think they are trying to train out of me." She shook her head like a child who didn’t want to learn something new, because it was going to be better for them later on with no benefit now. "To me the fight itself is no effort, it’s all just fun." A small smile crossed her lips. "I don't really need another reason." She rolled her eyes playfully. "Some people like calling them 'spars.'" She gave another shrug. "As if changing the word makes getting hit any softer."

When Kaelen pointed out how many compliments she'd given him, Seris simply shrugged. There was no grand strategy. No hidden motive. "I just like what I've experienced so far." That was all the explanation she felt necessary. "If something's nice..." Another shrug. "...I'll say it."

Then he began describing the meals he'd make. The more complicated the better. Fresh ingredients. Interesting spices. Experimenting whenever he could. Seris found herself imagining it all far more vividly than she expected. A soft, contented purr escaped her almost without permission. "That sounds wonderful..."

Her eyes lingered on him for another moment before he admitted to coercing—or perhaps outright stealing—ingredients from the academy kitchens. The pleasant expression vanished. A low growl replaced it. "That's not right." She frowned with genuine disapproval. "You shouldn't have to steal food just because you want to cook." The injustice seemed to bother her far more than it probably should have.

She thought for only a second before arriving at what was, to her, the obvious solution. "I'll work something out." Another decisive nod. "You can come to Coruscant." She paused. "Or we'll meet somewhere your overseers can't bother you."

The frown melted back into her usual carefree smile. "You'll cook us one of those grand meals you've been describing." Her crimson eyes met his. "And..." A playful grin slowly spread across her face. "I'll make it worth your effort."

She didn't elaborate. She simply reached for another piece of fruit, content to let his imagination do the work while she enjoyed watching whatever reaction that promise might earn.

"Look. At. You—my Lady Queen."

A voice - feminine, aristocratic, and very familiar - reached Revna’s ears before her eyes shifted to catch sight of none other than Sophia of House Marr - one of Malum’s sisters, and Revna’s cousin.

A smile curled upon Revna’s lips as her fiery eyes glinted with an emotion that bordered on joy at seeing a familiar face, a familial one at that. Sophia, wearing her own bikini outfit that practically dripped with House Marr’s nobility, gave Revna a look over before seeming to approve of what she saw and took an open seat next to Revna.

"You clean up remarkably well. Very intimidating—Very mysterious. It's giving…" she waived her hand for a moment, as if trying to find the right phrase or word to describe what Revna looked like in that very moment. "I commune with Sith Spirits on the sly, but SPF still matters. I support it."

A genuine chuckle of mirth rolled from Revna’s chest and past her lips. “Sophia…it is good to see you again. You look gorgeous, as always. Putting everyone to shame with your sense of fashion…” the little Marr said with humor laced into her words. Revna gave her cousin a look over, much like how Sophia had done with her, and marveled at just how beautiful the spitfire truly was. She grew up surrounded by nobility and embraced it to the fullest, and it showed.

She had been the one to help Revna step into her heritage all those years prior, when she had first arrived at the Marr Palace on Alvaria. The little Marr hadn’t embraced it to the same extent as Sophia had, but she still had Malum’s sister to thank for turning her from a prior slave to a woman worthy of her noble heritage.

Revna did not stop Sophia from reaching across to pluck her glass from her hand, and she watched with no small amount of amusement as the ruby eyed woman gave a sip of her drink, before declaring that it was ‘tragic’ and that Revna would be getting something better.

Sophia raised her hand and flagged over the bartender, a young man who seemed a bit flustered, and made it clear that Revna was to receive something else...whatever it was that Sophia had in her hands. She watched the interaction between bartender and Sophia, no small amount of amusement flickering in her eyes as she did so. Her grin flashed when Sophia cast her an incredulous look and tossed her perfect strands of raven hair locks over her shoulder.

After a moment, her ruby red lips shifted back into a smile.
"Soo…How are things? How are you? How's the King?"

Her tone, and the arched eyebrow, indicated that she wanted to hear some juicy details from Revna. Secrets, gossip, whatever she fancied knowing. It had been a long time since Revna had last seen Sophia, let alone spoken with her. Once upon a time, Revna’s relationship with the Sith King had been kept under wraps but over time they made more public appearances together, and it had become clear that Revna was more than a prospective ‘apprentice’ or student of the Lich King. Word, gossip more likely, spread quickly - not to mention Sophia’s brother wasn’t too keen on the match. She most certainly heard the news from him, at least that was what Revna assumed.

Revna waited to say anything until her new drink arrived. She gave it a sniff, and arched an eyebrow at the strength of the alcohol contained therein, before she gave it a sip. Yeah…she was going to get tipsy, that was for certain. It was strong.

The last time she had a truly strong beverage, she had tempted the Empress of the Core - and paid for it. Not that she really minded of course - that memory still brought a small smirk to her lips. She was a Sith, afterall. Life was to be lived. But that would remain her and Mercy’s little secret.

Much has happened, my dear cousin. I went from being a prisoner to a Royal Consort, and now I am, how did you put it? ‘Lady Queen’? I have an Apprentice -” her eyes tracked to the large Epicanthix warrior who was engrossed in conversation with someone that Revna recognized from Korriban’s Sith Academy. “I am a Darth now; I have a seat of authority, a measure of power, a voice that is heard by others in the higher echelons. Recognition in the Dark Council, with two Sith Empresses. And more…” She took another, deeper drink of her new beverage. “Considering I came into this galaxy as a slave, and now I am royalty - I think I am doing well, all things considered. What will be next…? Becoming a Warlord? A Dark Lady of the Sith? A Sith Empress myself?” She shrugged, a cunning little smirk playing on her kohl dabbed lips. “Who knows?

Revna imbibed another sip of her drink, before moving on to the topic that Sophia certainly was eager to hear about.

The King is busy…always busy these days, it seems. Ever since he was elevated to Dark Councilor by the Empress, he has been away from Korriban. We communicate but not nearly as much as I would like us to. His duties consume him and I was entrusted to look after Korriban in his absence - and that duty consumes much of my time as well.” Her voice dropped off slightly, a hint of sadness coloring what she shared. But as soon as it came, it was gone, and her smile returned - a touch impish, too.

I do look forward to his return, though. We might need to clear out the Royal Palace when he does come back. Otherwise, we might traumatize our the servants and guests…well, more than what they already have been…” She said as a roguish smirk played across her lips, one that was reflected in her fiery eyes as well, before it simmered a bit and she decided to check in on how Sophia was doing.

How have you been, cousin? Are you still on Alvaria or are you staying elsewhere for the time being? Anything juicy you have to share with me?

Coming back to Brosi brought a different sort of feeling to Skadi Lightbane.

The last time she had been here was to fight off the Imperials; she remembered the thunder of the canon, the pouring rain that soaked everything, the surge of battle fury that thrummed in her veins.

The cold terror of witnessing the Black Wolf appear and attack one of their own, the strange mix of emotions that slammed through her as she tried to stop the flow of blood from Irina’s devastating wounds. And she remembered turning her own control over ice against her own comrade, against Aerik.

He’d been a different creature then who had been taken by the blood and battle lust, not the same flesh and blood young man that stood with her now. The fallout from that had nearly ripped the three of them apart, but they had all managed to persevere through it all. A bond had formed between the three of them, and Skadi wouldn’t exchange it for anything.

The Valkyri felt the Young Wolf’s eyes settle upon her and she turned to meet his gaze. No words were exchanged, but so much was said in the look that passed between them. They were co-apprentices to the same Master, but they were far more than just that now. They were packmates in the fullest of ways; lovers, hunters, companions, warriors. That understanding, and more, threaded through that simple look.

They were not on Brosi to fight a war; instead, they were here to hunt, to find a quarry worth their efforts hidden amongst the jungles of the planet. A planet that teemed with life, dangerous life.

Of course, Aerik had elected for them to pursue after one of the most dangerous quarries presented to the hunters that had gathered on Brosi: a Kasina Satwa.

They could have gone after the myriad of other creatures offered to the hunters to pursue, but he just had to choose the most challenging one. That brought a small smile to Skadi’s face; she would face this challenge head on alongside him - though she hoped they would be aided by others in this adventure. The more bodies they had to distract the Kasina Satwa, the better.

Aerik was studying the ground, the lay of the land, just beyond the edge of the resort’s boundaries. He mentioned to her that others had gone before them, following the herd. Her golden eyes picked up on the tracks within the jungle floor, the bent or broken foliage - very subtle things that only a hunter would pick up and notice.

But there was something else hidden underneath all of the information on the surface of Brosi - something a little more harrowing.

Something else was hunting the hunters.

Aerik rose to his feet and Skadi came to stand close by to him, listening to how the jungle breathed around them both. Off in the distance echoed a roar from some creature, enough to disturb feathered creatures from the branches in the canopy above their heads. Skadi cast her gaze briefly towards Aerik as he stated that they would learn soon enough where the game wanted them, and she gave a brief nod in agreement. One did not rush a hunt; patience was oftentimes rewarded, and those that rushed headlong into something they did not have the full grasp of often came up empty handed…or dead.

A presence approaching them pulled Skadi’s focus away from Aerik and upon a newcomer - a red skinned Sith Pureblood by the looks of it, wearing hunting attire and with a lightsaber attached at her hip, and a Nightspore hunting rifle slung over her shoulder as well. Dark purple locks glinted in what little light filtered through the canopy, giving off an amethyst shine every now and then.

"I hope you two don’t mind me tagging along."

The Valkryi turned her gaze back to Aerik, a silent question passing from her with a thoughtful tilt of her head:
Do you want company with us? It might be wise to have an extra body with us - for distraction.

I do not mind, so long as my companion here agrees.” Skadi replied, her words still touched by her Valkyri accent. She cast her gaze between them both, waiting to hear whether Aerik would agree to having a third member added to their hunting party or not.

"Keep pool water from falling in or the sun from melting the ice?" She guessed off the top of her head, watching the tray go by. She decided not to get any more even though she was barely buzzed off her first drink. Not that she couldn't handle more, but getting drunk at a party full of predatory people seemed like a bad idea. Better to be disciplined and seen as someone with self-control. Plus, she wanted both hands free for a plate and food.

A sithspawn race? "Man, being the dependable delinquent sucks. How much have I missed?" She added but didn't elaborate on as they walked to the tables of food. "Though the only creature like that I've ever had was a terentasaur, and I don't see that being allowed. Or even controllable. And I killed it." Picking up a plate, Kivah began piling it high with bits of roast and sides, occasionally sniffing a piece before adding it to her selection. "Here, try this. I think it's from one of those two-legged reptiles running around." Not waiting for a reply, Kivah dropped the sauce-slathered slice in question onto Varin's plate.

Satisfied with her selection, Kivah was already feeding a toothpick-skewered delicacy into her mouth as she looked around for their host. Spotting the green-vined Neti a decent distance from the heat of the grills, Kivah made her way over with a flick of her tail. "Heya teach, how's things?" It was not a very reverent greeting, but those who knew her would probably think she was being disingenuous if she ever gave one. "Nice place you have here. Reminds me of home a little."

"Look harder, Sestra."
"You misunderstand me." Mercy responded lightly, golden eyes holding golden eyes. She was used to it by now. People often misunderstood Mercy, for one reason or the other, but it was most amusing when Srina was the one misunderstanding her. It often created incredibly amusing situations.

"Where some see a creature to fear, I see my sestra." A shrug there. "Looking harder will not suddenly make my sister disappear."

Eyes continued to study her at the mention of frightening Srina.

It would be easy to disbelief her. Because it was hard to believe that the Empress of the Blackwall could be frightened by anything. Except... Mercy knew exactly what she was talking about.

While Mercy did not experience feelings or emotions like normal people did. She did have... reactions, especially to things that threatened the people or possessions she claimed. There was little that Mercy considered closer to her than her found sestra. The Moon to her Sun, her mirror image in so many ways.

"No, I would not wish to repeat that part of Coruscant." Wrinkling her nose at the mere thought of it.

A soft chuckle followed however, clearing the marring of her expression.

"You have my blood in you even now. I feel it." Eyebrows raised at her. "You feel it too. With my life coursing through your veins, you can have more than one drink."

Srina's healing factor might not be the same as hers, but it would certainly assist with detoxifying the alcohol.

"Come now, Srina..." Reaching out, taking the bottle by the bottom and guiding it to Srina's lips. "Bottoms up... for me?"

Eira was reclined in her chair, enjoying the sensation of the sun glowing on her skin, there was a glass of wine beside her. Time away from training and attempting to relax and shift the depressing thoughts. Reading the novels that Eira had brought with her, some of them were the classic fantasy romances that she stolen from Quinn's collection but some were training material or lore information. Her eyes were scanning through one of the romances that Eira found in the collection, it was cliched in a lot of ways and didn't feel as natural in the dialogue from Eira's view. "How much longer do I have to endure until they simply confess to one another." Eira growled under her breath.

Impatient, she checked the length of the novel and started skipping through it, seeing what happened at different points of the novel. Still slow burning. Still no confession. Final chapter, there was the confession. "Wait... What!? It ends there? No! This is ridiculous. Quinn really needs to be questioned on these novel choices. All tension and no relief. That is not fun!" Eira protested to herself as she closed the book and looked around the pool. Things were going in full swing.

Lady Madrona's speech was seeking relief before events began to unfold. There was an itch to Eira that she desired to prove her worth. But there was also a fear of continual failure. Eira was sure that further conflict with Jedi, Mandalorians and whoever else dared to stand against them was going to be events that plenty of others would not achieve as much glory as they craved to win. However, Eira was wondering if she could ever prove her name worthy for consideration to become a Sith Knight.

Her stomach rumbled a bit and Eira moved to the table with the food, collecting a couple items of food as she looked around.

Efret offered a mischievous grin, though a little self-deprecating under its surface.

"You don't need to try to sweep me off my feet," she told him tactilely. "Apparently, I do that to myself often enough."

Her gaze shifted from him to the great canopies below. She watched some birds and small tree-climbing mammals surface from and dive beneath the lush leaves for a few long moments, their bodies little more than distant dots in her far-seeing Force Sight. A storm brewed on the horizon—hers, not Brosi's—a high pressure settling near the back of her head, within her visual cortex. "I used to be steady," she mused against his skin. "Grounded. Was I safer as a Jedi because I was more careful or because I...?"

Her touch suddenly stilled, hesitation sliding its fingers around her wrist to stall its movement.

She breathed deeply, forcing the moist rainforest air deep into her lungs and holding it there for a handful of beats until her alveoli almost burned. Air flowed forth from her parted lips as she exhaled forcefully, as did her delay. The distress that had caused it, however, stayed behind like a thick layer of gypsum after a lake had evaporated away.

"Or because I was holding myself back?"

She had given decades of her life to the Jedi. Under their auspices, she had undoubtedly grown in many ways, most immeasurable now given the passage of time. For that reason, perhaps that reason alone, she appreciated the role they had played in her journey, and didn't regret her service before threat of the Dark Empire pulled her from her anthropologic tour of the Outer Rim.

" . . .Consider a Jedi buddy system, a pause on independent research . . ."

Maybe those words at the All-Jedi Meeting convened before the storm had struck Jedi Master Efret Farr like any poison-tipped Caros arrow, and killed her, unbeknownst to anyone in the room, even herself.

But maybe that was the best thing that could have happened to her—that kind of death. Maybe she had allowed her academic calling to become a crutch, an excuse to study the injustices of the worlds rather that make those who caused them scream and writhe and bleed.

Her face turned towards Casimir. "Tell me that I made the right choice," she begged into his palm and to his eyes, her brow pleated and every muscle in her jaw tense. "Even if you have to lie. I don't care. Just tell me that, please."

"Listen..." She finally spoke, a bit more at ease. "Give me a role to play - I'll be anyone you want," she murmured. "Because I'm actually terrible company to keep. But I'm good at pretending."

Quinn understood better than Arris possibly expected. To play a role and be someone other than yourself had been Quinn's life. At each stage, she had a different face; at each event, a different role to play. All of them had collided and become Quinn.

It was only until her talks with her Uncle that she finally understood how it was to juggle so many. Each role, each title only explained a portion of the woman.

But to make up her as a whole, Quinn needed to be all of them and none of them at once.

A task that she was slowly trying to master. Still, fingers pressed gently into the synth-skin of the android.

"A role?" she parroted back, only to buy herself more time to think.

What role would Arris Windrun fit in this scenario? There were several she could mention, but none would be fitting for the HRD to be her companion. The Princess tilted her head, a finger tapping her lips rhythmically as she thought.

Arris would soon regret this.

"Why can't Arris Windrun be your role?" Quinn smiled sweetly. "She's not as boring as you think." She leaned closer, looking up at the slightly taller woman.

"I find her intriguing, and I want to know more."

She kept her face close for just a moment; she could almost taste what they had shared on Abregado-rae. Her voice quieted as she kept the conversation just between them.

"But fine, if you want a role, then it's girlfriend." Quinn smiled, fully expecting it to be rejected. "I haven't had one in a while; it would be fun to remember what it felt like…"

She paused and mused quietly. A hand reached up, trailing gently along the sculpted jawline of the Triumvirate.

"Maybe to sweeten the deal… or to just give you a bit more courage…"

Quinn once more leaned in; the sudden feeling of the darkness that Arris had felt several times before now lingered in the air.

A tantalizing offer, an addiction dancing in front of an addict.

"I can give you another taste…"

Without warning, a blaster shot rang out just over eighty meters away from @CT-312’s position. A large adult male iriaz toppled over, a smoking, charred hole burned through the creature’s skull. Its body hit the earth with a heavy thud, by which point the rest of the iriaz in the herd were already darting around in a panicked scramble, bolting frantically through the tall grass as they raced towards the cover of the surrounding jungle canopy. The grantaloupe, ever skittish, broke after them, swiftly abandoning the watering hole for the relative safety of the trees.

The uller were the only ones to remain, the horned beasts huffing and grunting in defensive displays. Their hooves pawed at the earth, ridged skulls lowered in warning. However, it did not take long for them to calm, the herd collectively deciding that whatever had caused the disturbance was not a threat worth further consideration.

Not yet, at least.

SL-0182 stepped into the clearing, her Nightspore rifle held at low ready as she approached her kill. Her boots pressed soundlessly into the damp soil while her probe droid fluttered overhead, its crimson photoreceptor scanning the watering hole before suddenly honing in on the lone, camouflage-clad figure near the watering hole. The Asset did the same, her crimson-hued quadocular gaze settling on the stranger with an unreadable expression, if not for the faint, uncanny smile that suddenly curved her lips.

“S-L-zed-one-eight-two,” she introduced herself in a tone that was equal parts melodic and monotone. “Saaraishash Slatesi Asset.”

A pause followed as SL-0182 silently regarded the woman, in a manner that likely seemed measured, bizarre, and perhaps a little bit awkward!

“Please state your identity. You are a hunter, yes?”

<"I don't want the job of leading my Clan; Murad can have it when Father dies."> Darth Superious grumbled irritably to no one in particular.

Clan life and Leadership can involve high-stress and sometimes tedious duties such as resolving a very nasty land dispute between his Clan and their neighbours. It took way longer than expected to resolve because his Grandfather Arcturus and countless others' graves were being dug up in the resulting escalation, and that inflamed it into a 3- or 4-year acrimonious Clan War. There were casualties on both sides over a boundary overlap and desecration of graves.

Superious was busy dealing with this very fraught and deeply personal issue that prevented much of his involvement with Faction Missions as a Sith Lord; he also reckons a lot has gone on without him.

Finally, after years of chaos, it ended with rewriting border territories and conceding land from both sides, and Arcturus being reburied in a specially earmarked land inside his Clan's territory.

As soon as the incident had been resolved with a tense truce. Superious left and had entered deep space without much fanfare.

Here is where the Sith Lord finally got around to sorting through his correspondence, reports, invoices, bills and one small piece of news from Isidor about some rare minerals he took from a trader during a raid. A message popped up that piqued his interest: a Hunting Expedition and a Pool Party.

He wasn't much of a Party Animal so he could pick the non-pool party activity instead. Still, reading about what the other activity entails, he's going to need to partner up because going alone is stupid. Thomas had vanished, and no one knows where, so that's not an option. He'll figure it out when he gets there.

He kept circling back to imagining being a creature's Supper and how undignified and unfun that would be. Superious had nearly been the meal for a giant monstrous creature before, and the sensation of being eaten made his skin crawl; it's up there with Slime Mould in levels of disgusting.

The Sith Lord set the coordinates into his personal small ship's navigation and pulled away into hyperdrive to get there quickly because doing so without it would take way too long. He'll need to get that rattling seen too while he's there; old Starfighters make noise, he knows that, but this has been getting louder and he's been too busy burning his candle at both ends to think about it at all.

How inattentive of him.

A beep broke through his thoughts as he approached his destination; coming out of hyperspace made something beep angrily; he needs that looked at too. But right now there is a Hunt to get into. He quickly checked his equipment to see if everything was accounted for before descending into the patch of clear land. Once landed, Superious jumped out into the patch of treeless jungle.

The mission for the Sith now is to actually find a partner and get to hunting. With both purpose and caution, he began to head into the foliage. Not realising he was being watched.

Another low call rolled through the canopy, distant enough that it belonged to nothing immediately dangerous, close enough to remind every hunter gathered at the tree line that Brosi had no intention of making the day easy. The sound lingered in the humid air before fading beneath the constant chorus of insects and rustling leaves.

Aerik met Skadi's eyes for only a moment. He understood the silent question before she ever gave it voice. They had hunted together long enough that some conversations no longer required words.

His attention shifted to Sybil.

She had proven herself in the arena. Whether that translated to the jungle remained to be seen, but she had approached without arrogance and asked rather than assumed.

A small nod answered her.

"You're welcome to join us."

There was nothing more to discuss. Brosi would decide quickly enough whether any of them belonged beneath its canopy.

Aerik crouched once more, his attention returning to the disturbed earth. The impressions left by the Iriaz herd were easy enough to follow, but they were not what held his focus. The narrower clawed tracks weaving between them were fresher than he liked.

"The herd is still moving," he said quietly. "So is whatever's shadowing it."

His fingers brushed the damp soil one final time before he rose, golden eyes following the broken line of foliage into the dense undergrowth.

"We'll follow the herd. Stay alert."

Aerik stepped beyond the final marker at an unhurried pace, allowing the jungle to close around them. The trail narrowed quickly beneath tangled roots and broad ferns, forcing the three hunters into single file before opening once more into a shallow game path pressed flat by countless passing hooves.

The deeper they walked, the quieter the forest became.

The insects that had filled the air near the resort gradually disappeared. Songbirds gave way to silence. Even the breeze seemed reluctant to disturb the towering leaves overhead.

Then Aerik stopped.

He slowly raised a hand, signaling the others to do the same.

Several dozen meters ahead, the game trail split around a massive fallen tree whose trunk had long since become draped in moss and climbing vines. Beyond it, branches still swayed despite the complete absence of wind.

Something large had passed through only moments before.

Whether it was the herd... or the thing following it... remained impossible to tell.

The wintry woman watched as Mercy tried to guide her bottle with an elegant brow raised. It wasn't so much that she'd been persuaded instantly by so few words, but moreso, that she was curious to see how far the other woman might try and press her luck. There was an invisible line with the Blackwall Empress where one would find her cold demeanor gave way to iron and stone—but Mercy had a habit of crisscrossing it like it was a game for younglings.

Hawkish eyes would hold that of the giantess while she took a single and deliberate sip of the alcoholic beverage before lowering the bottle again. Her expression betrayed nothing, but the flavor left a lot to be desired. It was like someone had decided to drop a battery into a glass of unsweetened lemonade with the faint overtone of grass clippings. Her nose twitched from the bitter carbonation.

It was truly, truly a foul experience.

"I know your blood makes me more…resilient? But…Even that has limitations."

How could she forget?

It was the reason she could hear Mercy in the back of her mind from half a galaxy away. It wasn't quite the same as the Force Bonds she'd held in the past, but it was close enough that it made her pause. It was too much. Too many worlds crashing in, too much madness. She had already given so much of her soul to other people…How much was really left? How much of Srina Talon existed?

Perhaps… that was the inevitable point. The Sepulchral would have loved to realize that she was less unique, less herself, and was slowly being ground down into the Sith Empress they wanted. The one who would wield the power she had refused Empyrean, if only because she knew her own limits. She had her own sense of right and wrong and trusted that above all. When she looked at a planet, bereft and swimming in ruin that she had caused…She knew she was right.

Srina could feel it when she bothered to look inward. A foreign warmth woven through her own life that stubbornly refused to disappear. It was not unpleasant. Merely…strange. An echo of the woman across the table carried beneath her own heartbeat. She mechanically lifted her fork to her lips and took another bite of meat, not certain of the beast, trying to curb her thoughts. They were wild and otherworldly. Just so close, so very close to slipping off the edge… "Why do you think I would enter a fight with a hand tied behind my back against a stronger opponent.", she carried on, suddenly, with a ghostly smirk flickering across primrose lips. "My battle-sister knows I am a strategist…"

"I don't like losing."

It was a ridiculous distinction to make over a few beers…But it was true. Srina had survived because she rarely accepted another's terms. Every duel, every campaign, every negotiation came with pre-determined knowledge that she had a statistically favorable outcome. If she surrendered first, everything that came afterward became reaction rather than intent. "If I drink…"

"It will be because I wish to."

Another sip washed down the meat, and this time she couldn't help it when her perfect expression broke for three heartbeats and conveyed her absolute disgust. "…But why would I?"

She glared at the Core Empress for a moment before her expression turned into something else. Not petulant because the Echani was never that…But something other. She could never relax for long in public, never do something that might jeopardize the nation she seemed destined to live and die for.

"It dulls my senses, and it tastes dreadful. If we got attacked…I would be an easy mark."

Her free hand reached out, and one of the fruit dishes snapped from the adjacent table and landed it her hand. Chilled and slightly sweet. The glass seemed unusual, and it took her a moment to realize that it was made out of molded sugar. Really, the Hordemother had not spared any expense. The talk of fighting in any capacity turned her mind back toward the future. War was coming.

It was always there…Just out of reach. Getting closer every day.

"The Mandalorian forces we encountered on Humbarine did not belong to the Mandalorian Empire. They are other and seemingly confused with history. They will come for me because I lead the Eleventh Empire and the Tenth laid waste to their world.", she murmured softly, though she was still nursing the disgusting beverage. "It is ironic…But they hold me responsible simply because my eyes are yellow."

Because she found the Dark Side to be the more efficient weapon.

If any of the Iron Covenant had been aware of true historical data, regardless of their toys and misconceptions—They would know that Srina had been with the CIS during that time. They seemed to know everything about her past but did not recall that the Exarch of the Confederacy of Independent Systems had not attacked Mandalore even when it was deserving. Instead, she had given the Enclave clemency. They rose to power the first time, with her support, and now this successor state had forgotten its roots because it was not convenient.

It was not prudent for propaganda to accept that their people had been given leave to flourish anew in her garden. Her younger self had seen the potential in them without being led by Mandalore the Infernal. Here and now?

Darth Carnifex Darth Carnifex …Had been right. This was, in part, a mess of her own making. It was one more war for the sake of her once-upon-a-time insipid need for gentleness. Fairness. Pity.

"The High Republic is also on the horizon. I feel…As if there is not enough of me to go around."

Naedira watched her mate for a long moment, searching his face for the disappointment she had braced herself to find. It never came. The quiet certainty of his voice settled the raw and exposed nerve endings that never fully healed. Her lips slipped into a sheepish and reluctant smile as her fingers tightened on his once more. It was a very familiar habit. She wondered, not for the first time, what she had done to deserve a man who never expected her to be whole. Who just…Loved her.

"…You'll never stop trying to fix me, will you?", she murmured, the question carrying no accusation, only a weary sort of affection. He had kept the memory of her close for over a decade. He had kept her alive in memory when she could barely recall her own name.

Gerwald was always sacrificing for her. Always…Trying to make the world a little softer. He made a home on Jutrand for their children and the pack members that followed him into the Legion. His eyes never strayed. His heart never wavered. He had more courage than any Jedi, even though they followed a difficult path. His loyalty to the Empress frustrated her…But at the same time, she respected it.

It was part of what made her husband who he was.

She followed when he tugged her gently by the hand and let Gerwald steal her away from the gathering without protest. The children were old enough that they could wander through a rather tame party by themselves. Ironic though it was—She felt safer letting them loose on a Sith World than one controlled by the Mandalorians or the High Republic. For all of the scheming…

It felt predictable, which made her feel..Safe.

The sand shifted beneath her feet, and voices rising from the resort fell away until only nature and the surf remained. She watched Gerwald over the shoreline, memorizing the easy way he smiled over his shoulder, as though she could make a memory stick just by refusing to look away. She hadn't forgotten anything since returning, but it was a constant concern. Maybe…

Just maybe, it wouldn't happen again. Maybe this was one she could keep.

There was forbidden and blasphemous hope in her, fragile enough that it felt incredibly dangerous. Everything was going too well. That was when the other shoe dropped, and blood with meaty chunks started raining from the sky. Naedira stepped closer until her shoulder brushed his arm while her mind picked at the things she couldn't recall, probing the seams, trying to force something to exist where there was nothing. She was unwilling, currently, to even surrender that point of contact.

"If I forget one day…Will you remember for me?"

Would he fill in the blanks if this body started to fail?

Nae selfishly wanted him to, but at the same time, she didn't want to keep him trapped. Not like before. A decade of his life lost to chasing a woman that was long gone. That was barely a woman, more of a thing, and ninety percent monster. What was dead should stay dead.

What was gone, should stay gone.

"Tell me stories?"

She was the most selfish person in existence.

Perhaps, that was her Sith trait. Where once she had given it all…Now?

She was selfish.

Quote of the Moment:
"Her soul was too deep to explore by those who always swam in the shallow end."
___________

Sophia listened with rapt attention, chin resting delicately in her palm as she swirled the stick in her drink with elegant fingers. Every new title her dear cousin listed earned a nod of approval as if she were mentally updating some sort of imaginary ledger. "From slave to royalty…", she trailed off with a hint of admiration, though it would be hard to pinpoint what exactly impressed her more.

"It's a dramatic character arc, of course, but who doesn't love a little drama?"

The word "drama" was emphasized by her shoulders shaking a little while her voice took on a higher pitch before it smoothed out. The mention of becoming Sith Empress drew a soft laugh. Not because Sophia thought it was impossible, but because it reminded her of her elder brother. His ambitions had known no bounds until abruptly…He vanished. "Don't tempt fate…The galaxy can barely survive those two.", the stick from her drink rose so she could point in the direction of the weirdest freaking tourists she'd ever seen.

A woman the size of a mountain and a little slip of a woman that wasn't even a quarter of her size. One looked like she could punch her way through twenty buildings in one go while the other was kind of just like…A mean flower? Pretty, Sophia supposed, but mean. "You realize…That means you'd have to kill them. One, at least.", a tilt of her head, noting that the two Empresses were always in proximity.

Sophia squinted at them, changing her mind. (As she was want to do…Every three seconds.)

"Or both. Yeaaaah…Probably both."

Then came the part about the KING, and Sophia immediately hyper-focused with her legs swinging just a little. Ruby-red eyes widened just enough to be theatrical before she leaned over closer to repeat the deliberately salacious state of affairs. "Clear out the palace?"

Her eyebrows, refined and sharp, wiggled and the younger woman gave a sweet squealing laugh. It was infectious enough that it made people start paying attention. Not that Sophia cared—Of course people looked at them. They were hot, duh. "Revna Marr…I knew you were my favorite cousin. You little cad. But…If he's not coming home enough, entice him, you know—", she straightened up and adjusted the straps of her swimsuit in a way that was not untoward but clearly suggested: "Entice him."

"Nobility are…Dumb. Men? Also, dumb. Add Sith into the mix, and you get a socially repressed dummy head with super powers. Dumb. Sometimes you just have to beat them over the head and drag them around by the scruff of the spooky cloak so they know what they're missing."

Not that she had ever really had to beat up Horus Rhyne Horus Rhyne . Embarrassingly, he had been the one to beat her over the head. Showing up at every party she went to, even when she tried to dismiss him. She'd thought him handsome, but back then, she wasn't looking for a partner unless it was strategic. Love was for ditzy saps and novels for younglings under the age of twelve who didn't understand that love wouldn't keep you safe, fed, or in power.

Until suddenly it did. Until…It became more important than a crown. More important than any jewel or piece of property. More important than who sat on the Throne of the Sith.

Sophia had never admitted it out loud because…why would she…but it was true. She would still do her duty as a loyal member of the Sith Order who knew her place, but her family, Horus, came first.

Slowly she shook her head and waves of hair that were black as pitch tumbled and gleamed in the light. The second drink for Revna arrived, and Sophia immediately ordered two more, ignoring the fact that she could have just done that in the first place. She was feeling petty because the bartender had called her "old" and now she wanted him to pound salt. Hurt, just a little. "As for me?"

"I've been fabulous, obviously."

The haughty words hid how she felt about Alvaria, the truth, but Alvaria had never been her home. It was the place where her brother had been made a boy-king, and they respected her for her relation to him, but she had been born and raised on Jutrand. Still. There was something just beneath the surface that wasn't right. Her smile, less bright. Her eyes…Quieter. Not the laughing crimson gems she always seemed to have. "Jutrand has been a bore…But I'm usually there when I'm not being dragged across the galaxy by some House matter or another. Someone has to pick up the slack without Malum…I guess that's me."

The spare of the spare of the spare of the spare, heir. Her finger tapped the edge of her glass idly before she lifted it and daintily drained some of it. Yum yum. At least the bartender could do one thing right.

"No scandal worth reporting….But Horus did propose."

Her instant grin was beautiful, blinding, brighter than the sun. Sophia didn't care that dates weren't set or that she hadn't told her judgy parents yet. She was just pleased that he wanted her. Not because she was a Marr or had one hell of a lightsaber collection. Just because, for once, she was enough.

"And I…Didn't say no."

Such a cheshire, cheshire smirk.

Brosi wasn't Niamos. Yet he'd figured the same rules applied.

With a trained eye, he'd chosen the best lounger, expertly laid down his towel, and thus claimed his throne.

Now he thrived there, face shaded by the fronds of a broadleaf palm, his view equal parts lush horizon and lush Sith physicality. Especially the latter.

Breathtaking nature could be found anywhere in the galaxy, if you had the credits to show for it. But the chance to catch a glimpse of an Emperor or Empress in their swimwear? Well- Isobel had ruined one of his eyes, but it hadn't been his eye for beauty.

Less fortunate was that the Sith royalty didn't seem to be turning up to the pool. Not that there was reason to complain, mind you, there were enough eye-catchers here already.

His gaze drifted from an athletic Catherese ( Kivah Kivah ) to bikini-clad Seris Velmora Seris Velmora . Then to Varin Mortifer Varin Mortifer , who somehow always - literally - looked hot, and to a platinum-haired man Casimir Thorne Casimir Thorne with muscles of steel. He even found himself measuring up his chances with the host( Madrona A’Mia Madrona A’Mia ), though he couldn't think of a way to flirt with a plant that wouldn't come across as offensive.

Then there was the other issue. Everyone with some stake in the Sith hierarchy seemed to be mingling here. He even spotted Arris Windrun Arris Windrun and her mystery girlfriend ( Quinn Varanin Quinn Varanin ) across the pool. And picking the wrong target, landing one wrong compliment, might well mean waking up beside a Dark Councillor in the morning. That would only make a fun story if he lived to tell it, and he highly doubted he would.

No, this was the kind of event where it made more sense to stay on the sidelines. Less trouble.

The only trouble he wanted was deciding whether to reapply sunscreen or order another one of those drinks loaded with fruit skewers.

His eyes glanced at the small umbrella then back at her as she answered his question. He took another sip from the concoction as they made their way over, her question reaching him about what she had missed and truth be told he did not know.

“Hmm, truth be told, I joined with The Covenant not too long after that. I was pretty isolated after that trying to corrupt an Ashlan Jedi temple in the Golg Desert. And that’s when I was attacked by a pack of Tuk’atta. I recovered, hunted them down and killed their alpha with my bear hands.”

He remembered that night fondly. The feeling of the creature's bones breaking beneath his might and the warmth of its blood pushing away the cold night air. And then he remembered sinew, the little Tuk’atta pup that decided to join him on his way back home. She was so tiny back then.

When the meat plopped on his plate he blinked a few times, brought back to the present as she described what it could be. Varin was no stranger to eating exotic meats. His gaze looked at the slab of meat for a moment before plucking off a piece and trying a bite. Then another, and another.

It was delicious. And he continued eating as they both made their way to the host, and one of Varin’s prior teachers from Korriban.

“Professor. The planet changes every time I come to visit. I had almost gotten lost trying to find this place while flying in.”

He paused to take another sip of his drink.

“It looks lovely here.”

Pre-cognition: Will be staring at Cruelty Cruelty when he crosses her line of sight

Toast done, revelry commenced once again, A'Mia turned to take in the scope of variation in those gathered. She was feeling particularly pleased with herself and the turnout. The gifts provided to her guests would also prove quite helpful to her in later assessing how the festivities unfolded and which conversations might warrant further inspection.

Though the sithspawn flowers were indeed gifts freely given and would be put to use however her guests saw fit when they went about their lives after the event, while they remained on Brosi the organisms were still tapped into her bio-chemical network. It meant that the Neti would be able to access stored data taken in by the daisies over the course of the party. As a host, she couldn't be everywhere but this served as the next best thing.

Soon, a familiar face approached and A'Mia welcomed conversation with an inclination of the head. Nothing about her relaxed demeanor gave away that the neti was a bit more wary of Kivah than she was of the average Sith. The cathar was a freelancer and after the unfortunate security breach involving another former student, one could never be too careful. She had an unusual soft spot for teaching, but after the incident with Haro Aven Haro Aven , A'Mia had been shoring up her defenses.

"Well met, Kivah, it has been quite some time," the arboreal woman murmured breezily.

Varin‘s welcome was a bit warmer as he received a pat on the shoulder, the likes of which one might use to acknowledge a favored hound.

Despite efforts by our enemies to defoliate, Brosi has recovered quite well. Yes. Like home even? A high compliment,” she observed in a rather clinical manner, unfamiliar with the nostalgia of “home” herself.

In these moments of rest and cavorting, what dreams do each of you have for the future of Sith? Regale me with your ambitions.

A’Mia’s gaze was distant and the question pointed. The tall woman swayed slightly to the music, half full fruity drink cradled in one long fingered hand.

Darth Strosius surveyed the lush and vibrant environment around Him with a wary gaze, eyes darting to observe any disturbances in the scenery that could imply movement. The wilds of Brosi had become host to quite a number of dangerous and exotic creatures even without factoring in Sithspawn and He'd rather not run afoul of any of them before He sighted them first. For once He might not be the deadliest creature prowling the jungle, but that could change.

Ideally it would in fact, provided that His hunt was as fruitful as intended. While bringing down any of the more dangerous and elusive beasts within the wilds for glory and dinner was all well and good, the Sithspawn creatures in particular were His focus for a more scholarly reason. Observation and research on the war beasts was best done in the field after all, where their full might and presence was unhindered by the din of a larger scale conflict. Even if it did mean having to insert Himself as their opponent for such a study.

To that end the masked Sith Lord had set out into the jungle with the offered rifle strung across His back, although in truth He had just as much intent to use His gauntlets' claws and His blades as the weapon that all the hunters had been equipped with. In the back of His mind there was a small part of Him that wondered whether a certain would applaud His personal utility or if she'd instead take issue with it. Regardless she was busy entertaining guests so He had few concerns either way.

Darth Strosius moved through the jungle with a measured but swift stride, His heavy adornments hardly seeming to weigh Him down at all even as they left scars and broken plants in His wake whilst He searched for some sign of any of the more elusive and mystical creatures within the verdant area. Unfortunately a ship flying overhead and landing nearby undoubtedly scared off anything that He might have been close to trailing at the moment.

A scowl flickered across His hidden features and a curse slipped from His breath but He was undeterred, as He hoped His potential quarry might be. "You know," He called out as He continued scouring the ground for any tracks or other signs of activity. "I find its best to have a relatively silent and uneventful approach in such matters as the one at hand."

Huh, interesting, Kivah wondered what Myunnah would have thought about him killing Tuk'ata. Though the massive warbeast had never seemed to mind when it happened on Korriban, weakness begetting weakness. Now that girl had been hardcore old-school Sith. She flicked her ear in a shrug, sounded like Varin had been through it. Though feeling Calyx Sundrift Calyx Sundrift eyeing her up, she went onto tiptoes for a single pace, drawing out her stride as her back turned away and flicking her tail. Always nice to have an appreciative audience.

She was on better behavior for A'Mia though, mostly just because she was fairly sure the Neti didn't care about much beyond her work, both in her laboratory gardens and the classroom. And because the teacher was one of the few Sith here that simply had her respect. As for her ambitions, Kivah cared little for the Sith Order, Kainites, or any of the other orders beyond the so-called Holy Lands and the Tsis'Kaar, at least when they had work for her. At least some of it came from a lack of proper introduction to them beyond the occasional show of might and negligent disdain for life, and the rest came from staying in the Holy Lands when in Sith space. Being across the galaxy from everything else impeded socialization and integration. Not that Kivah was a big champion of life. You got what you deserved, both as the person who let themselves be crushed under a boot and as the person wearing it crushing their base of workers, recruits, and taxes. Ultimately, they hadn't reached out or bothered to learn about her, and she'd returned that favor with the same indifference.

But how to answer her old teacher's latest test? She started slowly. "I don't seek glory for its own sake, same with conquest. I know some do." Just from their short conversation, Varin was likely one of them. "But I see means, not ends. Means I'm still learning and establishing. You'll remember from Kor'ethyr that I was one of the biggest and strongest alongside Gavin and never lost a fight. But I was also the quietest blade in the dark, and none of those were the reason the others followed my lead." As she spoke, Kivah rubbed a pair of fingers over her left thumb as it was curled around a relaxed fist. "I cut through the chit, told it like it was, tore through those putting on airs without doing the same, and saw chit through no matter how bad it was. When I see a similar future for the Sith, then you'll know my ambitions."

As much of a non-answer as it seemed to be a boast, Kivah was also testing A'Mia back. Varin too, for that matter. She'd always played her hand close to her chest, often showing people just what they expected to see from the loud Cathar that spent as much time in the gym as with any book or training. Everything she'd said was the truth, just varnished in layers for those observant enough to be looking. She'd straight told them she was brash and unsubtle, except when she wasn't.
