Calyx Sundrift
ACOLYTE OF THE SITH COVENANT

"What I want, my Lord, is to never be denied anything again. My choices will be my own. I won't even let the Force decide my destiny, if I have any say in it."

PERSONALITY
Calyx Sundrift is a glib, self-deprecating trickster whose charm is a constant performance. He developed an instinct for reading people, sorting allies, threats, and liabilities within moments of meeting them. He wields flattery, humor, and deception as tools of self-preservation rather than genuine expressions of goodwill, and is rarely without some manner of alias or invented backstory on hand should the need arise. This calculating, self-interested exterior is something he's coldly honest with himself about. He's admitted and reflected upon picking vulnerable people as potential shields to sacrifice if things go wrong for him.

And yet Calyx keeps failing to be as ruthless as he thinks he should be. He loses an eye protecting a girl he barely knows rather than let her come to harm, spares a captured Jedi out of reluctance to kill someone genuinely good, and flatly refuses the ambition every Sith around him assumes he must have. He hates this soft spot in himself, calls it a liability, and constantly second-guesses the moments where compassion wins out over self-preservation.

Beneath his glib exterior and cultivated cynicysm, Calyx carries significant unresolved trauma and simmering rage, including guilt over violence he had committed while consumed by the dark side on Kessel, and a slow-burning desire for revenge against those who mean to control him. He frequently turned to drink, casual romantic entanglements exclusively with aliens, and reckless escapism as means of avoiding introspection, using physical and emotional distraction to dull feelings he was unwilling to confront directly. Although Calyx rarely allows such moments to last, retreating quickly back into sarcasm and deflection whenever sincerity threatens to become a liability.

STRENGTHS
DETRIMENTS
Consummate Liar
His skill in deception, crafting aliases, and misdirection is a genuine survival asset. Calyx lies as easily as he breathes.
The Hedonist
Calyx chases pleasure, drink, and indulgence as escapism, which clouds his judgement and distracts him from confronting his real problems.
Guile Hero
What he lacks in raw power compared to those around him, he makes up for through wit, misdirection, and social manipulation.

Anti Hero

His morally compromised self-interested baseline means he often acts against his own better nature. This conscience is a source of internal conflict rather than a stable guide.
Defiant to the End
Calyx refuses to bow to power structures, treating autonomy as non-negotiable. A trait that's won him respect in a hierarchy that usually crushes such defiance.
Only Sane Man Syndrome
He believes his own cunning makes him smarter than everyone around him, which occasionally blinds him to threats he's underestimated.

BACKGROUND
  • Callan Pen Ar-Lan of Chandrila was an exemplary Jedi. A young Knight of strong moral conviction, prodigious bladework, and a Force connection his Masters had spoken of with quiet pride. It lasted precisely one year past his Knighthood.

The mission that ended it was routine. All that the Order received was silence. Months after, Callan Pen Ar-Lan was listed among the lost.

But he was not dead. He was dragged into the spice mines of Kessel, sold there by someone who had failed to understand exactly what a Jedi Knight in chains was worth to the right buyer.

In the years that followed, The tenets he'd built his identity around were challenged daily. He held to the Force longer than was reasonable. Long enough that when he finally let go, it felt like a betrayal committed by the Force itself rather than by him. When he escaped, it was not through discipline or calm clarity. It was through surrender to the Dark side. To the frenzy that had been building for years. He left no survivors in his wake. When it was over, the man who had walked into Kessel no longer existed.

On Cadomai, he cast down his name along with everything attached to it. He emerged as Calyx Sundrift, owing nothing to anyone. Every pleasure denied to him as a Jedi, he vowed to experience. Every comfort set aside in service of something greater, he would collect.
  • No more than a year after escaping the Kessel mines, Calyx surfaces on Troithe, working with the Labour Unions in their struggle against the Czerka Corporation. There, he orchestrates a theft with himself as the victim, using it as a pretext to recruit Acier Moonbound. A thank-you drink turns into a long conversation at a dive bar, where Calyx's charm and probing curiosity collide with Acier's guardedness. The night ends in violence when an old enemy recognizes him, and the two flee Troithe together as fugitives aboard the Flickerfox.

Calyx travels to Niamos claiming to lay low, but in truth he pursues a private vendetta. Hunting down a target from his past, planned as a solo assassination unrelated to the trouble he and Acier left behind on Troithe. He's overheard and approached by a woman introducing herself as "Verse," and what begins as flirtation quickly becomes mutual interrogation. Each recognizing the other's performance for what it is, Calyx and Verse part ways with an unusual mutual trust intact.

True to form, Calyx kept drifting across the galaxy in the months that followed. He stumbled into a robbery on Cato Neimoidia, took part in a heist on Coruscant, and got caught barefoot in a wildfire on Ukatis. In the same period, he discovered that both Verse and Acier joined the Hidden Path, the rebel-Jedi coalition standing against the Sith Order and the Galactic Empire. As Verse's date, Calyx attends their celebration on Odessen, and she even talks him into fighting alongside the Path on Sevarcos II during Operation Reckoning. Even so, he remains unaligned. A man operating alone, unattached to any cause but his own vendettas, his path lit only by occasional flashes of heroism that bring him closer to the person he used to be than he'd like to admit.

  • With streaks of cunning, he had eliminated every rival who came after him. Some had fallen publicly, broken in sanctioned duels. Others had simply disappeared. A year of defiance on Thrantin had earned him this - a transfer to the dark stronghold of Byss. Doomed to serve. A slave again, no different from what he had been on Kessel.
    - Calyx Sundrift

Calyx surfaced on Empress Teta, scouting Level Ten's sealed depths for the crime syndicate Kanjiklub. When his crew was slaughtered by the Sith assassin Kasir Dorran, Calyx instinctively reached for the Dark side of the Force for the first time in years, managing to wound Kasir before being overpowered. Impressed rather than enraged, Kasir spared him out of predatory curiosity and delivered him to the Covenant, as damaged goods with potential worth cultivating.

That potential was tested immediately at Desevro's brutal training camp, a proving ground where acolytes fought alongside captured prisoners in live combat drills. It marked the true beginning of his life as an Acolyte. Restricted, watched, and rotated over the following year between the academies of Pelagon, Thrantin, and Coruscant. Calyx survived the way he always had. Through guile, reading and manipulating acolytes and overseers alike.

Somewhere in that first year, Calyx became entangled in something he couldn't manipulate his way out of. A Force Dyad with Acier Moonbound. The two began sharing dreams, memories, and feelings neither of them fully understood. Chasing the bond's origins led Calyx to the Red Library, where he uncovered fragments of the Final Weave prophecy, and from there to Arcana, where he crossed paths with Acier himself, and later to Dathomir alongside the Sith Knight Tamsin.

On Pelagon, Calyx met the newly arrived acolyte Isobel Serraris during a lecture the Sith deliberately allowed to collapse into a bloody free-for-all. When Calyx shielded her from the violence, a sadistic Nagai Sith Lord made an example of them both, forcing Isobel, weeping and powerless against the Lord's grip on her, to choose a body part of Calyx's to mutilate. She drove the ignited blade into his eye, resulting in a scar he could not hide.

During a tense reunion with Acier in the Sith Temple on Coruscant. Calyx admitted he wasn't plotting revenge against Isobel at all. Only against the Sith Lord who forced her hand. Acier, wary at first and questioning whether Calyx's feelings were even his own or just bleed-through from their Dyad, ultimately agreed to help him kill the Lord responsible.

.

He pushed himself upright, swallowing against the taste of bile. The echo of the nightmare lingered in the Force. Faint, but real. Calyx ran a hand through his hair, fingers trembling. The air felt too thin, his own heartbeat too loud. He could sense it again. That tangle of emotions pulsing somewhere beyond him. Manifesting as fear, anger, grief, and pain. But not his. Someone else’s.

It was as if someone had crawled into his head and taken up residence. If he could feel them this vividly, then could they feel him too?
