STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES:
  • Shira's last name is either an asset and a liability, depending on the company.
  • She is a skilled lightstaff fighter.
  • Her power in the Force is relatively generic: she knows the core abilities but lacks sophistication or specialization.
  • However, she has been known to learn unusual Force tricks from obscure traditions.
  • She is an experienced starship officer.
  • She has cybernetic implants, with all the pros and cons those entail.

APPEARANCE:
Shira is a wiry young woman of middling height. She has many large and small scars, including a few shrapnel pockmarks on her face and neck. She has extensive cybernetics around her shoulders, arms, neck, and lower jaw. She carries herself with a somewhat formal posture and often comes off as unengaged or humourless - too serious for her own good.

BIOGRAPHY:
Shira was born to a family of traders on New Cov in 832ABY. As a child, she watched her world and sector emerge from the Four Hundred Year Darkness and reintegrate itself with the larger galaxy. However, when she was still young, her older cousin Ashin Varanin became the Empress of the Sith Empire, which put something of a damper on the Varanin name, especially on their homeworld. Her family fell on hard times.

Like several extended family members, Shira was sent off for Jedi training in her early teens. She was a very new Padawan when the Netherworld crisis broke in 844ABY. A year later, the Lords of the Fringe collapsed and Ashin was presumed dead. Though they'd never met, Shira found herself free of her polarizing cousin's shadow.

She ran with the notorious Brat Pack for a little while, mostly on their periphery. At eighteen (850ABY), she joined the Galactic Alliance as a young Jedi Knight. Barely a year later, however, the First Order defeated the Alliance in several key engagements. Shira was injured at the Battle of Hoth. When the Great Galactic War and a deep betrayal leveled the Galactic Alliance in 856ABY, Shira was already a tired veteran at twenty-four years old.

Along with many other Alliance survivors, Shira took refuge in the worlds of the Outer Rim Confederation, later the Outer Planets Alliance. Serving with the OPA Partisans and Allied Fleet, she found herself caught up in defending against the last gasps of the First Order and resisting the Sharukan onslaught. In 860ABY, now in her late twenties, Shira saw action against the Children of the New Order during the pacification of Pantora. By the time some degree of peace came to the OPA, or at least a break from incessant war, Shira was hungering for something new. She just didn't know what.

She found some degree of new purpose when the Jedi received a message from Starfalling, a Cor elder on Gargolyn IV. Starfalling requested Jedi assistance to power an ancient Cor ritual and subdue a rampaging leviathan. Though Shira would sooner have killed the leviathan outright, she joined the Jedi team that assisted Starfalling. The obscure ritual surprised her: it had no parallels among Jedi abilities as she understood them. She began to wonder just how many other remote species and cultures had Force talents that the Jedi didn't understand. Leaving Starfalling with a gift - a srabus ('Blood of the Ancestors') crystal - Shira kept her eyes open for ways to learn from new teachers in new directions.

She suffered severe injuries at the Battle of Atrisia in 860ABY. Enteched into a battlecruiser's power reserves, she used the Cor ritual to put the other trapped souls to rest. A Jedi strike team found her comatose and virtually dead. Extensive cybernetic surgery helped restore her to functionality over the following weeks.
