No Ridiculous Anime Characters

I have no problem if your character is anime.

I have no problem if your character is edgy.

I have no problem if your character is a pony.

I have no problem with any of these things.

I do not like, however, characters who are defined by being, ahem, KAWAII SUGOI UGUUUUU~

I do not like, however, characters are are define by being, ahem, i will tear out your soul and poop upon it

I believe every character should have three dimensions, and both of these are bad in their own ways.

Anime avatars are unavoidable. There's so much anime out there, you can find a pic to suit just about any character. Hell, I've done it from time to time, just because it's damned convenient. A good avatar is shorthand for what one might expect when dealing with a character, especially when dealing with more popular properties. If I see a Nathon Fillion avatar, I can guess that the character in question is probably a smuggler of some kind. If I see Revy from Black Lagoon, I know they're probably a badass gunslinger.

I do agree that someone taking the weeaboo factor up to 11 is annoying as all getout. I enjoy anime. I regularly keep up with the new shows as they're going on, and I rewatch certain favorites. If there's anyone in here that doesn't sit down and watch Cowboy Bebop from time to time, I pity them. But at the end of the day, we're a Star Wars site, and certain tropes just don't belong.

Fortunately, the avatar as a snapshot of the character thing works here too. If I see cat ears, a tail, excessively bouncy cleavage, or any one of a dozen other things in an anime avatar, I know that I'm probably not going to enjoy writing with that person. It's nothing personal, and as long as they're enjoying the story and not breaking site rules, I don't give a flying kung fu kark. I just don't enjoy that sort of thing in this context, and the fact that they clued me in with their choice in avatar means I can stay way the hell away.

They're everywhere. You should keep an open eye.
I've been here for nearly two years, I've roleplayed from the Sith side to the Jedi side (or as close to it as I'm willing to go with a ten-and-a-half-foot stick) and have not met a character that is a stripper, prostitute, or a pornstar. All of those break the rules for PG-13.

Just put a bounty on anyone with big eyes and a wonky head-to-body proportion, bonus money for cat ears and nurse costumes. Problem solved.
Wouldn't, no... shouldn't, you know of the individuals existence ICly first? Putting a bounty on someone you've never even heard of should be looked down upon.

"I'm putting a bounty on someone on Coruscant who wears a red shirt, blue hat, and old boots. I'll pay whoever kills the person when they meet me in my home on Hoth."

Hold on, are you saying that my presence on these boards would be degrading to all people who roleplay here?

That I'm somehow lessering the integrity of the universe. That some people might feel like that their characters achievements and emotional connections are devalued by the idea that characters who have almost little to no relation to the star wars universe pollute the rich, co-operative saga being written by people who actually care about the star wars universe?

I'm a human, humans are in star wars. I see no reason why I couldn't have been teleported from the alpha quadrant to some unknown galaxy far far away and now it is my goal to get my crew home safely while I thwart cardassian sith threats to the Planet Earth.

Why if it's true, that'd be in violation of the prime directive and I should go find a star trek board.

The cross-over rule is under "Role-play" and not "General" for a reason. Sarge, a board Admin, uses Master Chief as his avatar. That's totally fine.

Crossing over to the Halo universe would not be.

Furthermore, I think you're confused on what exactly plagiarism is. Using images from other franchises is not plagiarism, because nobody's claiming they own those images.
Teleporting here is crossing over the Star Trek Universe and Star Wars. That is against the rules, and that was set in stone early on. So no, you can't. Teleporting here means you have knowledge of Star Trek characters/technology/species/etc

Janeway is stunned by the disrespect she is being subjected to on her federation starship. Tuvok interjects and addresses the committee of alien life forms.

"It is quite Illogical to call the act of taking 30 seconds to google image this very prestigious star fleet captain who is everywhere in the news of federation space and then to put it onto a blank character page to make a point 'a waste of time'. I believe captain Janeway is simply offering another perspective on the concept of these types of characters with a less emotionally charged catalyst such as weeaboos." The Vulcan's emotionless reasoning was sound again. He thought these life forms must be deficient examples of their race if they truly believe this sort of constructive and creative contribution to the debate at hand is a waste of time compared to spending hours and hours roleplaying on a star wars forum where majority of people aren't interested and some likely to be sickened by anime.
Now you are arguing personally with sarcasm and smartallic style.

It's easy to assume something about a character from their picture, or reading a few lines of their rp. But that doesn't mean you fully understand them. You have to follow every move they make. Its far too easy to judge someone based on a quick snippet of their apperance.

If we look at this from a reasonable pov, this IS discrimination, and should be handle on a case per case basis, not just written off as a group of deviant causing trouble.
No argument has been made to discriminate on someones characters personality. It's not judging to get to know someone, it's judging whether they are in lace panties and nothing else. Purely and simply there's a reason why there's a law for no nudity in public/public decency. This is not discrimination. If it was, it would be about something a person was born with or can not change. You can change clothes, that's a phrase. You can put on pants. If you mean discriminating like someone wearing poor and draggy clothes must be poor, then yes, that is discrimination. I, however, do not believe the OP is saying "people who use hyper-sexualized pictures for their characters are bad people." I believe the op is saying "We should be more decent."

No, I don't know what you're talking about, because I only portray mind-readers on this board. I'm not actually one in real life, and whether something is "ridiculous" is purely a matter of personal opinion.

What are the bright lines not to be crossed? Who gets to decide where inspiration stops and plagiarism begins?

George Lucas borrowed heavily from Japanese films, particularly the works of Akira Kurosawa, so your Star Wars already has cross-over themes and elements at the start. And that's pretty much how any creative process works. I'm a believer that there is no such thing as an original work of fiction. Something, somewhere, has influenced, contributed, or inspired it.

[member="Zak Dymo"] is basically Haneru from the anime Tribe Cool Crew. He doesn't have an anime avatar. He doesn't speak Japanese, but as I write him that's where a lot of the inspiration for the traits that make up his character have originated. He's not, to my mind, a blatant rip-off but I have to acknowledge that a lot of the ideas invested in him stem from that external source.

[member="Boo Chiyo"]? A mix of Damian Wayne from DC Comics and Jonah from the anime Jormungand.

[member="Sor-Jan Xantha"]? Kid Loki from Marvel Comics.

We have a Sith writing a character using Kid Buu as a play-by who is doing, in my mind, a fantastic job of writing a Star Wars character. Does that bother you as well? And I'm not talking about just the avatar. Much of that character draws on thematic elements of Buu's amorphous body, but I never find my sense of the Star Wars universe smashed when I read a post by him.

Don't get me wrong, your concerns are valid. I just find that the enforcement of the ban that you're proposing would be entirely subjective. Would you propose character application/biography reviews and approval by RPJs before someone could start to roleplay?

tl;dr: We all draw inspiration from external sources of some variety. So how do you enforce a standard? Who determines when inspiration crosses the line? And where IS that line?
We can not argue when Plagiarism/cross overs should stop, since they are rules, we can not break them. If someone uses a characters name, bio, picture, skills, items, from another universe, that is breaking the rules. Something that we can not argue.

Another problem I have with this is, you're willingly volunteering to possibly exile a niche group of members from this community based on their choices. That should never be an easy decision, because if someone is really attached to their anime playby, they may look elsewhere to role-play with it at.

And I'm sure ya'll enjoy having lots of people and possibilities in this community. You don't get that by being selective on who joins it.

That strategy is how you bottleneck yourself into these splinter communities we often see, where members only join because they want everything to match their opinions and they only want to role-play with people they know and people who are their friends with like-minded opinions.

That's fine, but I do not believe it to be a sustainable model for growth. SWRP is to remain competitive, and I believe banning anime avatars would be a big step in diminishing our ability to stay competitive.

^what boss nass said.

It would also look hilarious in the rules.

6. You may not destroy a celestial body (sun, planet, moon, etc.) in the SWRP Chaos Galaxy without prior permission from the SWRP Chaos Board Owner.
7. Superweapons are restricted to Staff-Approved Events and must be destroyed prior to the end of the event.

8. AND NO ANIME AVATARS

I'm with Rusty and Tef.

If you wanna be exclusive in your little group, sure. Nobody is gonna force you to RP with someone else.

But disliking something shouldn't result in rules changes and blanket bans or Admin Enforced rules. Just avoid em if you don't like em.

I try not to blatantly rip off anime characters, especially not for this character. I understand the rules and I'm sorry if this character of mine irks anyone despite my not RPing lately. I did mention someone died in my house recently, so I'm going through rough times.

I just want to say this is not about anime avatars, as I've clarified in two additional edits to the OP. It's about people who come to SWRP to roleplay as an anime character, or their interpretation of what one is, and subsequently ruin the nature/theme of this SWRP board. This can be extended to any character who's presence in the SW universe is not believable.

I get that you want traffic and activity on this site. I get that maintaining an atmosphere of acceptance, inclusivity and tolerance is an utmost priority for you and one of the main ideals of this board. But the core ideal of this board is Star Wars roleplay, is it not?

Well, people who desire to roleplay as something incompatible with Star Wars should look elsewhere to roleplay, should they not? This is a Star Wars roleplaying board. Why should the majority's overall experience be tarnished for the sake of the minority's feelings?

Don't get me wrong, I love the diversity of the characters and possibilities within the community - as long as their inclusion and creation in the well established Star Wars universe can be rationalised.

I want to bottleneck myself into a Star Wars community, though. That's the whole reason I joined TGC and subsequently came here and stayed here. IMO, you should be trying to cultivate an atmosphere not just of inclusivity and tolerance but of an authentic (or believable) Star Wars experience. Balance.

I apologise if I'm ruffling any feathers but I feel this needs to be said, as I would wager that at least 50% of the board agrees with me.
