Realizing a need for asymmetrical fleet warfare following engagements with the much larger and more numerous ships others were capable of fielding, the Admiralty Council ordered the creation of a small stealth flotilla. These frigates were designed to hit above their weight when working in tandem and at distances far greater than normal engagement ranges.
Pushing the technological envelope to the straining point, the White Glints are built around their two major design components, the comprehensive stealth systems that allow them to remain undetected during operations, and the two large energy torpedo launchers that serve as the ships’ primary long-ranged armament. Secondary were the large magazines feeding the assault missile launchers solidifying the frigates’ place as anti capital ship platforms.
The survivability of the design is further enhanced by the line's internal lay-out, taking heavy influences from the Carrack-class. Internal compartments are kept small, often less than fifteen meters on the long axis and divided by reinforced bulkheads and blast-resistant doors along the main corridors. Additional safety systems such as anti-fire foam sprayers, battery back-ups, and reserve oxygen supplies make the Whit Glints incredibly survivable even if rendered helpless short of their complete destruction.
Tactics:
These frigates are intended to sit outside normal engagement ranges at several light seconds and either volley or ripple fire into capital ship formations with their energy torpedoes. Most return fire is either out-ranged or avoidable by relocating between shots. Both active and passive stealth systems assist here as do the Trickster decoy package.
Crews are trained to jettison assault missiles and move away before activating them so the drive plume doesn’t reveal their location. The added benefit of this is that they can be left adrift for a time should the ship not be under fire, allowing several launches to be combined together, slowing the interval but adding firepower to each volley.
If forced into closer ranged engagements White Glints carry a myriad of systems for defense. Most of them focused on anti-starfighter and missile countermeasures as those were deemed the most likely to close to engagement distances or the most threatening conventional weapons respectively. EM and jamming disrupt targeting while mixed CIWS fire destroys threats. Anything left over, too large, or heavily defended is targeted by proton torpedoes. A last surprise punch for anything that manages to get too close.
Sensor and communication probes are used to ‘dog-leg’ communications and scans back to the ships to prevent easy tracking by the enemy. This often leaves even allied ships unaware of a White Glint’s precise location. Multiples are often launched to be retrieved later as they are fragile and easily destroyed if detected. The probes also serve as valuable scouts or rear area pickets, allowing views behind obstacles and further out than scan-lag would typically allow.
If combat is expected, the ship compartments are depressurized and the crew wear vacuum rated ship suits they can plug into external oxygen supplies. This is done to prevent fires, the propagation of explosions, pressure waves, and explosive decompression in the event of a hull breach. Each compartment is capable of independently re-pressurizing if needed.
