Duel Warlords of the Sith Boss Beatdown: Ashin Varanin

Jedi factionalism is high. In the name of building bridges, a group of young Jedi - the NJO Battlemaster Aaran Tafo Aaran Tafo , the SJO Padawan Mathieu Brion Mathieu Brion , and Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri (who has recently healed from a broken ankle) - have come to the beautiful aquatic world of Pillio.

Long ago, an explosion destroyed a secret bunker here. The bunker held a sprawling collection of insignificant Jedi artifacts, nothing dangerous or powerful: plenty of curios. The four young Jedi hope to comb through the coral, the tidepools, and the insect-built amber formations for relics of the forgotten past. The wandering Forcer Alyosha Drutin has a similar errand.

It was supposed to be a tranquil training run: a brief respite from war while still contributing to the work of the Jedi. But they couldn't have known that the bounty hunters Cyran Vaas Cyran Vaas and Cassus Akovin Cassus Akovin have tracked the Sith Lord Ashin Varanin to Pillio. Thirty years ago, Varanin conquered the planet
Odona. Now its people have put a price on her head: two hundred thousand credits, dead or alive...

LoWzPxz.png

It was supposed to be a tranquil visit: a brief respite now that she'd finally succeeded at resurrecting her wife. A way to rest and step away from the many pressures and obligations she'd taken on for that quest. But as Ashin looked around the colorful stretch of rocky beach, saw the Jedi and the bounty hunters, she knew her hopes had been empty.

Ah well. To bloodshed.

She didn't have much to work with. No sniper nest, no armor. Just the Force, a blaster pistol, and the sword
Jentaral. She put her back to the water, drew both weapons preemptively, and bared her teeth in a smile.

"Come on, then."

OOC: As mentioned in the
OOC thread, barring any egregious nonsense the team will beat the boss of this boss fight, conclusively. That doesn't mean your specific character will walk away unscathed...or walk away at all. Fights unfold as they will, and this isn't scripted.

Ashin Varanin...

Many years ago, when his mother was still young, she had fought against the dreaded combatant and won solely on the precipice of honor. As she had retold the tale, she made it clear that she had made a gamble that day, betting against the former Sith Empress from refusing her challenge. She spoke highly of the woman she brought to fisticuffs despite having the capability to destroy all of the equipment she had brought to fight her that day, and how unbelievable it was that all it took was a solid hit to the stomach to earn a concession.

That was the day she had earned the title "The Relentless", and had lived to that name until he saw her dying breathe leave her. He still had nightmares of his doppelgänger withdrawing such a familiar looking blade from her chest... but it wasn't her blade, and he had killed that sordid, twisted, abomination that mocked his countenance.

Now he was seeing things. Or at least, he wish he was, because he most definitely encountered someone that looked, and sounded exactly like her while hunting down gang members of a Primeval Cult. Except, she had both her arms, and had no memory of him. At first, he just chalked it up to incompetency on part of the Corporate Authorities of Denon, building a copy of her just to taunt him for all the damage he'd done to their sick operation so far. Yet none of it made sense.

Crol H'hurut was dead, he never met his father, he never met Preliat, or any of her friends. So the only way to understand what the hell was going on, was to hunt down her enemies - or whatever Ashin Varanin had been to his mother - and get them to talk. He could care less about the Bounty, he was just here to get information... or to gamble on something even more dangerous than that. Though he would be competing for her attention, as he knew that the Bounty would be of interest to other hunters headed to Pillio.

For now, the only thing he could do was zip across the terrain in a Swoop Bike with the slow steady beep of a Tracking Fob leading his way to his query...

A shame he could not get an uneventful day lately.

It was always something. Some oddity that turned what should have been a simple archaeological expedition into something far bigger. He was expecting a pirate raid. Or perhaps something more innocent. He was not expecting to tangle with a Sith Lord.

"Watch each other's backs." He warned, tone steeling as he directed his gaze to the Padawans with him. These Padawans were not his students, but he still felt a responsibility for their safety. As the representative from the New Jedi Order, it would be a poor showing if he allowed any of them to be hurt. He had no idea of their skills, no idea if they were as experienced in matters of war and battle as he was. He could only hope that they would be more assets than liabilities in the coming bout. But he would not worry about such things right now. He would deal with the battle as it flowed. Not fret of every possibility.

Because he knew battle would unfold. He was nowhere near fortunate enough to convince a notorious Sith to surrender peaceful. But the option still had to be offered. He would give her that chance to come peacefully.

"Miss Varanin." He called out from several meters away. Enough of a distance that he could close in quick if she used that blaster. But also enough that he'd have a chance to avoid her if she decided to come to him. There was a pop of displaced air as Arete appeared in his grasp. Blade resting over his shoulder as he stared down the infamous conqueror. "I'm going to have to ask that you stand down and surrender." He tilted his head to the side, muscles in his neck popping, making a vague gesture with his free hand for the rest of the Jedi to spread out and not group up. Take advantage of the multiple angles of attack they had while the Battlemaster occupied her from the front and dealt with the brunt of her fury.

But she would still get this one chance. An opportunity to stand down. He doubted she would take it. But the offer had to be made.

Two Hundred Thousand Credits!

That was some good money for Cyran. With that he could really begin to help out in financing his musical endeavors. Not need to work like a dog chasing bounties for a little while. Maybe even get a new ship? Plus he could get the added bonus to taking on a Sith, and not just any Sith either. Did they go by Sith Lords or Sith Masters? Cyran really didn't know. Those zealots never have made things easy on this galaxy. How could someone care to put The Force on such a high pedestal? A Force that rips the galaxy apart about every 1000 years or so. A Force that compels people to act and think in extremes. A Force that orphaned him...

Maybe now he could take out some of that aggression, pent up in a happy go lucky zeltron for two decades. Money and catharsis, talk about killing two birds with one stone. Cyran had caught wind of another bounty hunter that could be a possibly rival in this. Someone by the name of Cassus Akovin Cassus Akovin . Cyran has never heard of them. But if beating a Sith warrants splitting the bounty in half he's fine with that. One hundred thousand credits was no laughing matter for a bounty hunter.

Above where several people were gathering along with the target Cyran's two Prowler 1000 Exploration Droids hovered overhead. Providing a birds eye view to him in his helmets HUD. He saw others, more than just Cassus. Blasts! Were they other bounty hunters, or dreaded Sith looking to make a scene, or were they jedi? Cyran really didn't know the difference or cared.

Sadly it seemed Cyran was on the wrong side of the water. There being a large lagoon of sorts between him and his target with several hundred meters of water between him and his target. He needed to find out a way to get across and fast....

Alyosha, hunkered down behind some rocks near the bunker, had reduced his presence in the Force to a mere whisper. He'd expected to find Jedi and other scavenger types here, but now that something unexpected was happening, he didn't want to get involved if he didn't need to.

He heard an old woman's voice snarling, "Come on, then" followed by a male voice demanding surrender. A softer feminine voice mumbled something he couldn't quite make out. Three people so far in the immediate vicinity, and judging by his readings a fourth and fifth were on their way from farther out. Quite the party.

As fun as it might be to watch, he didn't have all day to wait around while this group killed each other, resolved their differences and had a barbecue together, or dispersed. Depending on how things went, he might be able to try and sneak past...

Risking a peek around the rock, he took note of where everyone was standing. From the looks of things, everyone was up against the old woman. Huh. That old bag of bones wouldn't stand a chance. Maybe it was best if he did get involved, if only to ensure that the others considered him a friendly. Better wait for the others to show up first, and see which side they took in this conflict.

Boss Beatdown

It was supposed to be a simple trip. A chance to get to know someone from the New Jedi Order better - and Mathieu had lucked out in getting to travel with their Battlemaster. While he was not of the Silver Jedi Order, it was still a person from whom much could more than likely be learned. But something was off and it became abundantly clear what, when Aaran told Kuxirra and him to keep each other safe. The large Padawan nodded with brief "Will do" as the trio approached the woman. His senses told him that she was a follower of the dark side of the force but there was always hope that she would be one who could see reason.

The Aaran did not disappoint and begun trying to sway the woman into surrendering. Naturally, hopes of success were low - but who were they to not give her the benefit of the doubt? Still, it was a good call, for the two Padawans to prepare for a potential attack. With Kuxirra walking to one side, Mathieu walked to the opposite one, positioning himself to create something of a crescent, knowing that it was troublesome to attack into if she decided to go melee. He looked to Kuxirra, concerned for her safety as the staff did not look like it would be very good at deflecting blaster bolts. With that in mind, he decided against unsheathing his own weapon, hoping that it might tempt the dark sider to attack him instead. If she did, bringing out his sabre from his belt to defend himself would take but a few brief moments. This had the added benefit of showing that he was not of a hostile mind - if she considered surrendering, being openly aggressive towards her might prevent her from arriving at the correct conclusion.

Things seemed to be happening around them too. He had expected it to be a rather lonesome walk but more beings were present than he would have expected. While they were not clearly defined, they did seem to be sentient. A thought crossed the large Padawan's mind, wondering if she had some sort of backup. It was hard to tell, but if that was the case, he had to be prepared for it and try to keep them off of Aaran and Kuxirra's backs - but for now, his main focus remained on the woman standing with her back against the waves.

Sadly it seemed Cyran was on the wrong side of the water. There being a large lagoon of sorts between him and his target with several hundred meters of water between him and his target.
Alyosha, hunkered down behind some rocks near the bunker, had reduced his presence in the Force to a mere whisper.
For now, the only thing he could do was zip across the terrain in a Swoop Bike with the slow steady beep of a Tracking Fob leading his way to his query...

A glance back across the lagoon confirmed what she'd glimpsed earlier: an armored man with a couple of hovering droids, quite a ways off. One problem at a time. She heard a swoop bike's roar Dopplering closer through the sound of the surf. Otherwise, the Jedi appeared to be her only problem.

"I'm going to have to ask that you stand down and surrender." With that in mind, he decided against unsheathing his own weapon, hoping that it might tempt the dark sider to attack him instead. If she did, bringing out his sabre from his belt to defend himself would take but a few brief moments. This had the added benefit of showing that he was not of a hostile mind - if she considered surrendering, being openly aggressive towards her might prevent her from arriving at the correct conclusion.

The three Jedi were spread out; the one with the facial hair - she wouldn't dignify it with the word 'beard' - took front and center stage. The other two looked various degrees of unready to Ashin's eye, but the middle one, he could be a problem. He moved like the thousands of veterans she'd known, and carried an ancient-style Force-imbued blade like he knew how to use it. Calling her 'Miss' felt like a puppydog application of Dun Moch. It impressed her about as much as that facial hair.

Ashin flicked the blaster in her off hand to stun. A basic blaster's stun setting fired concentric blue rings of sizzling energy, trickier to deflect with a saber than a straight-line blaster bolt.

She fired once across her body at Mathieu Brion Mathieu Brion on her right, then one more snap-shot at Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri on her left. The first response, she felt certain, would come down the centerline from Aaran Tafo Aaran Tafo , and she kept her sword up and her body pointed his way. Kept her eyes on his, too.

The only individual with facial hair of note present -which he did tell himself was a beard, grown in an attempt to add more age to his face- bit down a curse. He doubted the stun blast done out of mercy. More than likely it was a case of pure pragmatism. More than likely she'd simply gut them like fish if the rings connected and shut him down. So that would need to be dealt with.

His blade was useless for reflecting blaster bolts, but it could still dissipate the energy with little issue. With that in mind, Arete was thrown forward, spinning end over end, slicing clean through the concentric rings and dissipating the energy.

One would usually think that throwing away one's primary weapon would be a poor choice in tactics. But such thoughts never came to Aaran's mind. The only thought that came to him was that of taking down the threat in front of him as quickly as possible. So, while Arete was sent out to deal with the blaster fire. He lunged forward, wet sand kicking up in his wake as he surged forward, the Force lending him speed well beyond what a normal human was capable of. The distance between Jedi and Sith crossed in the blink of an eye.

His fist lashed out like a thunderbolt towards the Sith's midsection. Swift and powerful, certainly something that no one would wish to be struck by. But such a telegraphed attack was only part of his plan. For as Arete was thrown forward spiralling through the air as a tossed sword does. It suddenly halted in its tracks. Straightening out, only to spin and change direction. Coming at Ashin from the side, looking to impale her leg and cut down her mobility.

Normally fighting side by side with a blade controlled by one's own will was beyond Aaran. Such a feat required greater focus than he possessed. But such things were different with Arete. It was a sword forged from his own essence. His own self imbued into the metal. And so it was but an extension of his own will. One that he was more than capable of controlling for brief sneak attacks such as this.

The rhythm of the Tracking FOBB was quickening, and speeding across the valley he could see another figure across from a Lagoon, with interesting looking Droids hovering nearby. Cassus could just barely make out what looked to be a figure surrounded by a small group, most with physical swords. Time was apparently, of the essence, but it was due to that fact that the Bounty Hunter took a moment to pause, bring his swoop to a slow turn and stop. Trailing just behind it was a repulsor container his swoop was ferrying. It was his first time using such a trailer, because of what he was carrying.

"Let's see how you handle momma's engineering..." Cassus mumbled to himself as he turned on and heaved - though to his surprise it was very light - the IC-PDS "The Mother Relentless" Missile Launcher. He placed his Tracking FOBB into the launcher and waited for the data-transfer to take place before pulling it out. Confirming its programming, and its CryoBan payload, Cassus aimed over his Swoop Bike and launched the behemoth. The ridiculously oversized powered projectile would cross the gulf between them fairly quickly, locked onto Ashin's bio signature alone, and would auto-correct for any outside disturbances through the use of an inertial compensator. Upon reaching her, it would deliver a payload of CryoBan in the hopes of immobilizing her for capture. Hopefully, the payload system wouldn't be destroyed and he could recover it later, but that was a concern for after the fight...

Detaching the trailer and leaving the launcher there, Cassus got back on his Swoop Bike after putting on a rather powerful gauntlet with affixed blades. Apparently, while she had worn it when she was well, his mother never got a chance to use this particular item herself in any sort of combat scenario. Cassus had only used it once before, also incidentally while riding a hide speed vehicle. He hoped it would serve him well again. He was also wearing the last armor his mother ever designed, though calling it "armor" felt kind of ridiculous at times despite its reputable protective capabilities. On his feet, he was wearing an improved version of a technological boots his mother was wearing when she fought Ashin, with a much more respectable name than its predecessor... at least in his "boyish" opinion. Along his belt, there were only two items of note. The first a small ALE Field generator, which might give him an edge at the risk of his health should he choose to use it (though the first time he used it didn't help as much as one might expect), and the second was what became his signature weapon, his mother's Relentless Blade.

On his other arm, he had a Carbonite Whipcord Launcher, from the guild, and he used this hand to rev the Swoop Bike into motion to witness the results of his missile launch.

Well this isn't good...

Cyran quickly tried to wonder what his next action could be. Not only could he see from across the lagoon but his two droid companions were aiding in their visual feedback higher up. But he saw the swoop bike coming closer to his target as well as others from the front. Was he interfering with a coordinated effort? No, they were interfering with his efforts!

He watched as the swoop biker rushed in and fired a large missile at the target. Clearly they couldn't be a bounty hunter, that seemed like they were trying to kill the target not take them in. That meant if he got in their way he wouldn't be breaking the creed right? Cyran knew he couldn't stand around thinking of the merits of taking this on or not. Money was on the line. From his helmet controls his jetpack ignited, launching him up into the air from the other side of the lagoon. Unsheathing his force pike from his back he commanded his droids to close in on the fight to get more clear feedback to him and offer closer support if need be.

Even with the power of flight it would take him a little before he properly got across the lagoon to his target, meanwhile he activated his force pike, electric and vibrational energy running though it now.

The old woman fired twice at the group, with at least bolt one missing the intended target, before one of them rushed at her, trying to lock her into melee combat. Alyosha observed the fight passively, recognizing Jedi lightsaber forms from the man attacking the old woman. That meant the other two with him were likely Jedi as well, though they were on the younger side. Padawans?

Then things took a turn for the nuts. From somewhere farther down the beach, a missile was launched. Hearing whistling air and sensing the device's passage, Alyosha ducked back into cover, expecting a considerable explosion.

Boss Beatdown

Perhaps he had hoped for too much. For the woman would not even respond before resorting to violence. It was disappointing to say the least, but at least they had done what they could. Ashin's plan was a good one that countered his - for if he had followed it, he would have stayed where he was and tried to deflect what really could not be deflected. Fortunately, his prior work as a Mercenary had him familiar enough with blasters to recognise what she did when flicking the switch. With that knowledge in mind, he altered his intended action - instead of trying to deflect a single bolt, he ignited his sabre and spun it in front of him, ensuring that the entire blast would be dispersed before it could hit him.

Aaran was quick to launch his counter attack and Mathieu would follow suit. But before he could do so, the sound of a launcher went off in the distance ( Cassus Akovin Cassus Akovin ). With most of them in melee range, it was hard to tell who the projectile was intended to hit. The thoughts of whether they had been set up for an ambush or not crossed his mind but then - why would they risk hitting the dark sider by launching the missile? At this point, it was impossible to tell, but what was clear was that the threat to them had to be removed.

Confident that Aaran and Kuxirra could keep their foe busy, Mathieu turned and took a couple steps to put the Battlemaster between himself and Ashin. With that, he could face the incoming missile from relative safety. Having dealt with projectiles before, the Padawan used the force to try to influence its trajectory. Oddly enough, it wouldn't work, regardless of how much he tried. Its course seemed to be set - at least it moved in a predictable path. Shaking his head in disbelief, Mathieu unsheathed the green sabre of Purin Mill Se-Loach from his belt and threw it to intercept the incoming missile before it could hit them, trusting that the sabre could break through whatever defences it had. If it still wouldn't budge, there was nothing else to do but to holler for his allies to take cover.

Situational awareness, the good kind, required keeping track of all the problems that weren't problems just yet - Alyosha Drutin behind some rocks, Cyran Vaas Cyran Vaas and Cassus Akovin Cassus Akovin coming in on light vehicles, Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri dodging, Mathieu Brion Mathieu Brion conveniently intercepting a missile. But situational awareness also demanded a focus on the actual problem of the moment.

To wit, Aaran Tafo Aaran Tafo chucking his sword and charging in its wake.

Jentaral dipped and caught the telekinetic sword attack. The black blades rang against each other. A heartbeat later, the Jedi's fist crashed through a last-second Force shield and thunked into Ashin's midsection. She stumbled back but regained her stance and composure.

At which point Brion's thrown saber turned that onrushing missile into an expanding wave of CryoBan, large enough to engulf Ashin, Tafo, maybe the other two Jedi as well.

They wouldn't freeze solid: the missile had broken up early, dissipating the chemical agent. The whole area still dropped about forty degrees in as long as it took Ashin to call on tapas, a favorite old Jedi skill, and rasp-

"You're quick, boy."

-as ice crusted over the beautiful tidepools.

He was hardly fortunate enough to have ended the fight then and there. He knew a thing or two about elderly Force users. Petty things like size and age were easily compensated for with suffcient skill. He was hardly surprised that his attack from Arete was deflected. But what really caught his attention was the barrier. The ability to call something that potent up at a moment's notice was an impressive feat. One that he would be remiss to underestimate.

But he had other concerns. Mostly the heat leeching chemical that was cryban. Had there been a direct hit, he would be looking at days of bacta treatment to cure the severe frostbite that such an attack would have inflicted. But thanks to the intervention of one of the Padawan present. A disaster became a simple distraction. As the temperatur plummeted, he did not call upon Tapas like the woman before him to keep warm.

His heart thundered in his chest. Forced to beat faster and faster as his own internal temperature began to rise. The heat around him clashing with the cold, causing the air to shimmer and hiss as both extremes clashed. All while his hands began to glow brightly, like superheated metal instead of flesh. There was the added benefit of protecting him from the extreme cold. But it was hardly as effcient as Tapas in terms of usage.

"And you're spry for an old lady."

His gaze did not shift from Ashin. But his tone was then directed to the two Jedi with him. "Get the interloopers to stand down or fight with us." He was under no illusions of his ability to deal with this threat alone. But he could not fight two battles of such intensity at once. He would simply trust that the Padawans present were up to the task of dealing with anything that might interfere with the ongoing battle.

And with his command given, he rushed in again. Not allowing her to have the chance to set up anything more fanciful. Simply looking to pummel her into submission with a flurry of furious blows. Hoping that both heat and kinetic energy would be enough to overwhelm her impressive barrier and allow him to score a solid hit.

Cassus watched in financial dismay as a green lightsaber somersaulted through the air and cut through the Quadranium armor enough to dislodge its payload, spraying CryoBan over the group, which was technically a good thing, but he couldn't help but watch as the guidance system went haywire and dive bombed into the ground well past the group. That... was not something he was going to be able to buff out.

"Damn it..." He muttered as he outstretched his right arm and flexed his fingers out, the blades on the ends of his fingers extended and then left the Gauntlet entirely, hovering in the air a meter, two meters, three meters away from him and keeping pace with his Swoop Bike as he fast approached what he now recognized to be his target. The tracking beacon was getting very fast now in its rhythm. He'd turn it off at this point, but he was a bit busy simultaneously driving the bike and preparing to hit his target.

Eventually, the boy would pass through the group about 3-4 meters away at a very very high speed. The intention being, he could hit his target (or whoever is unfortunate enough to be caught in the way) and carry them along using the claws as anchor points for his Gauntlet's Manipulation Projectors to concentrate on. Then, he was hoping the stasis fields would reduce their movements long enough for him to bring the Swoop to a controlled stop away from the other interlopers and capture them wherever he ended up.

It was a complicated pass with a lot of moving pieces, but even if it failed he was confident removing distractions from the battlefield would better enable his chances of success...

... maybe.

Success. The sabre had destroyed the incoming missile. Mathieu quickly turned his back towards it, figuring that his heavy robe would protect him from the explosion to an adequate degree. But instead of heat and a powerful shockwave, he was hit by an incredible dip in temperature as traces of dispersed cryoban rained down over them. While it may not have been enough to risk any permanent damage, it was certainly enough to have the large Padawan slow down significantly.

Unlike the dark sider who employed Tapas or the Battlemaster using convection, Mathieu found his arsenal of possible force techniques rather limited. While he had spent much time studying self-enhancement and control, this was not something which he had touched upon beyond the mere basics. "Ow, it's cold" he said whilst shuddering, realising that there was little for him to do other than to wait for the cryoban to breakdown and release the heat it held again.

Aaran expressed what he'd like to see Mathieu and Kuxirra do and it suited nicely with what he had intended himself. Turning back to the one who had fired off the rocket, Mathieu summoned the lightsabre he had thrown earlier. It seemed to have stopped functioning - something which was hardly a surprise considering how close it had been to the missile. Still, he put it back to his belt, fully intending to repair it at a later point. It only took a few moments. Enough time for the mercenary to commence a charge towards the group. Assuming a defensive stance, he prepared to either defend himself or to intercept the person whom had yet to show any friendly tendencies. As far as he knew, the charge could be intended to hit the Jedi.

Fortunately for Mathieu, the attack was not directed at him and with his own speed slowed from the extreme cold along with the very fast speed of the mercenary on his vehicle, the failure to intercept was inevitable. Hopefully, the cold would release its grip of them soon, or else he would have to get very creative about how to proceed with the encounter.
