CAPTAIN HAYDIO HADWRIC
MIN EVENT HORIZON
AIRSPACE ABOVE JAR’KAI
Captain Hadwric breathed a sigh of relief as the
Event Horizon and the other two
Von Strauss-class cargo ship sighted their primary objective for the first time since the beginning of the campaign.
Jar’kai.
The main target of the Empire's attack on the planet, and the city that the
Mahporeem Imperial Remnant had sworn to defend to the very last man.
On any other given day, it would have been the Imperial Remnant trying to take the city over and bring under the banner of the
Imperial Confederation. Today, however, was markedly different, as the Imperial Remnant found itself actually allied with their enemy, the
Galactic Alliance. With the return of the
Galactic Empire, the Imperial Remnant's former enemies had suddenly become allies, though this was more of an alliance of convenience than a true ideological understanding of the other side's views.
Still, flimsy as it was, an alliance was an alliance, and Hadwric was willing to do anything he could to weaken the
Galactic Empire and prevent it from attacking his home planet of
Mahporeem. Hadwric had heard tales of the Empire's brutality during the original OPERATION: CINDER, and he doubted that they would be very understanding of
Mahporeem's grievances against them. After all, as much as
Mahporeem remember what the Empire tried to do to them, he was sure the Empire remembered how
Mahporeem fought and rebelled against
them so long ago.
The time for negotiations was long past.
"We've identified a suitable landing zone for the
Event Horizon within the walls of Jar'Kai", Lieutenant Simcurr remarked as the ship made its final preparations to land. "Despite the presence of heavy foliage and other geographical obstacles, the
Event Horizon will be able to land and disembark here troops
here", the Lieutenant noted as he pulled up a holographic display of the city's interior. It would be something of a tight squeeze for Hadwric, but nothing he couldn't handle.
"Very good, Lieutenant. I want these men off my ship as quickly as possible, as the sooner-"
Before Hadwric could finish his sentence, the
Event Horizon suddenly began to rock from side to side as turbolaser fire impacted the bottom of the vessel. Hadwric and Simcurr were nearly thrown from their feet under the barrage.
"Evasive maneuvers! I need a sensor read on where that fire is coming from stat!", Hadwric called out as the
Event Horizon aborted its attempted landing and began pulling upwards back into the sky.
"We aren't detecting any Empire align units in the area, sir", Simcurr said as he furiously scanned the ship's sensors for the direction of the incoming fire. "I don't understand, there aren't any enemies around, why-?"
Suddenly the realization dawned on him.
"It's coming from Jar'kai! Their aerial defenses are mistaking us for the Empire!"
"Blast!", Hadwric cursed as more turbolaser fire hit the underside of the
Event Horizon. Though his ship did possess turbolasers of its own and could theoretically engage the turbolaser towers targeting it, it wouldn't last very long in this kind of fight. Worse, Hadwric was concerned that any exchange of fire between his ship and the aerial defenses would only attract more defenders toward his location, and he doubted that they would ask questions first and shoot later.
"Launch all remaining
Storks toward the most endangered positions! They can at least avoid the brunt of this fire. Continue to engage in evasive maneuvers! And soMEONE GET ME THE GALACTIC ALLIANCE ON COMMS!", Hadwric roared as personnel ran to and fro their stations, trying to find someone that could get the towers to stop shooting at them.
It looked like things weren't going to be as easy as Hadwric had hoped they'd be...
CAPTAIN RONHAR TANE, TK-3301
GREAT WALL PARAPETS
JAR'KAI
"Watch out!"
Ronhar barely had enough time to dive out of the way as a burst of missile fire slammed into the top of the Great Wall. Many of the
Junktroopers alongside him weren't as lucky, having been blown clear off the top of the walls by the force of the explosions. One of Ronhar's
Arc Troopers responded with missile fire of their own, launching the ordinance out of their
Imperial long-range rocket rifle with little to no effect.
Things were looking grim. At this rate, the advancing Empire infantry and armor would punch through walls and overrun Ronhar's position.
"Dammit!", Ronhar cursed as he ducked underneath a hail of laser fire, not even able to lift his head to peak at what was going on below. "Where the hell are our reinforcements?", he wondered allowed as his men responded with blaster fire of their own.
As if right on cue, Ronhar received an incoming transmission.
"This is the MIN
Bantha Fodder. Looks like you boys could use a little help", the pilot remarked as a
NCE-131/c Heavy Dropship "Stork" appeared over the horizion, followed closely behind by four more examples of the vehicle.
"
Bantha Fodder, you are a sight for sore eyes", Ronhar remarked appreciatively as he fired his
ZB-41 Heavy Blaster Rifle toward the advancing troops, nailing one of them right in the helmet. "We'll take anything you can get, but be advised: LZ is extremely hot", Ronhar warned.
"Let us worry about that, Captain. You do what you need to do. Over and out".
The
Bantha Fodder and another dropship made a hard left turn over the city walls, taking and giving enemy laser fire all the while. They moved a short distance away from the fighting and began dropping off reinforcements: two
IAAT/Rs, two
All Terrain Heavy Salvage Walkers and two
TIE Walkers. Two other dropships dipped behind the city walls instead, releasing a pair of
All Terrain Modular Artillery Platforms and a single
All Terrain Shield Generator. Hundreds of
Junktroopers deployed with them, along with a small contingent of
Wookiee Troopers and
Medic Troopers. They all began to immediately engage the advancing Empire forces, though they found themselves bereft of any sort of cover outside the city walls.
The fifth dropship wasn't so lucky, as another missile barrage slammed into its engines. It began to spin out of control, unable to stabilize itself as it slowly approached the ground. With a dramatic crash, the final dropship exploded into a massive fireball as it impacted into the ground, killing or destroying anything that might have been on board.
Ronhar gave a low whistle as he witnessed the carnage. Still, he was glad to get any reinforcement that he could, and he was sure that he would need as much of it as possible. The enemy's
battle tanks were proving to be far more resilient than Ronhar ever could have participated, as the remaining
All Terrain Modular Artillery Platforms were apparently having trouble doing any real damage to them. Whether this was due to the tank's heavy armor or the artillery's cannon inability to hit targets, Ronhar was unsure. The
IAAT/Rs should be able to do good work against them, though the light walkers would probably struggle quite mightily against them. At least they should be somewhat effective against the
gunships that were raking Ronhar's men with blaster and missile fire. His forces had already taken heavy losses from their aerial bombardments, and the more
TIE Walkers he had at his disposal, the better.
Still, the centerpiece of Ronhar's strategy didn't lie in his tanks or light walkers, but rather in the single
All Terrain Shield Generator that the Imperial Remnant had managed to get to the surface. Though he only had one of them at his disposal, the AT-SG would at least protect Ronhar and his men from the incoming missile and artillery barrages that they were receiving.
The problem? The blasted dropship had deployed the walker too far away from the city walls, probably due to space limitations. The AT-SG began lumbering forward as it tried to reach the city wall limits. Once it arrived, it would activate its shield generator and finally counter the seemingly unending bombardment that Imperial Remnant troops were going through.
The other problem? Once the shield was up, anyone inside of it would be unable to fire
out of it, limiting the offensive options that Imperial Remnant troops had at their disposal. Would that tradeoff be worth it? Probably, but it was still something Ronhar would have to work around.
Overhead, a single
TIE/ew buzzed across the skies, using its advanced sensor array to keep track of friendly and enemy forces. It had been peeled off from elsewhere on the planet and rerouted toward the fighting taking place around the great walls of Jar'kai. Though it was a tremendously useful asset for Imperial Remnant forces to have, it was also completely unsupported and all by itself, making it an enticing target for marauding enemy gunships and starfighters.
Still, it would have to do for now. After all, it Ronhar and the Imperial Remnant forces were going to hold this position, they would need every bit of equipment that they could get...
