The Assembly (Silver Jedi)

Arisa would receive a small nod after the direct address, a small indication that he had heard her and was thankful for the timely response from her. His arms were crossed over his chest as he listened to her speak, his eyes narrowed in thought as she made her points. He had to admit that as a Neutral, or a Gray Jedi, as some liked to refer to them he appreciated the pragmatism she displayed. While ethics and morals still had place on a battlefield in the greater scheme, when it came to an all out war sometimes one needed to be flexible in who they worked with. It was something he had learned the hard way long before. He had begun his training as a Jedi, but he had never agreed with the strict interpretation of the code that so many espoused. Over time that had turned to a view that there was only the Force, with Light and Dark being two of a myriad of facets. This is what had led to him learning from both Jedi and Sith, and seeking out knowledge long thought lost from both sides. The fact that a Jedi would espouse even a similar idea that one must sometimes bend the rules for the greater good was something that he was glad to see.

As things began to pick up, Kaden meandered towards a position that would allow him greater visage of the proceedings. His amber gaze recognised Arisa, who radiated a precise confidence in her address, and his new master, Thurion Heavenshield, who seemed rather weary. He made note of the woman at his side - who Kaden also recognised as Coci, Thurion's wife - though he'd never met her. The baby cradled in her arms made the pureblood frown ever so slightly in disapproval, though it was not his place to voice displeasure at the child's presence. He realised there must be a reason for the child's inclusion, leading his frown to disappear and stoicism to return to his features.

His eyes met Yuroic's, who received a curt nod of 'hello' from Kaden. He knew very little or nothing at all about everyone else and decided to now focus the entirety of his attention on the proceedings that were about to take place.

Folding his arms, the Sith amongst the Jedi waited and watched as the process to elect a new Grandmaster began in earnest.

He reckoned it would be Arisa.

While all the pleasantries were going on around them, Thurion remained largely quiet with Coci by his side. He wasn't dismissive of anyone, and greeted anyone approaching him with a silent nod and an admittedly forced smile, but his heart really wasn't in it. He was too tired go through the same process over and over, since he first took up the mantle of Grandmaster. Now the Order found itself without someone to lead them, and there was nothing the Jedi Master feared more than to be voted back into office by those present. There was nothing left of him to give the Order.

In hopes that it would cheer him up Thurion plucked little Thirdas from Coci's bossom into his own, and almost instantly his mood was changed for the better the moment his boy looked up at his with those dark, mysterious eyes he shared with his mother. "Ba-ba," the toddler cooed and clutched his father's index finger as best he could, and Thurion couldn't help but smile and chuckle at the adorable baby noises. Everything this bundle of joy witnessed was for the first time - everything and everyone exciting and fascinating. For such innocence to inevitably become lost was the saddest part of growing up.

As everyone was getting seated, Thurion sat down beside his wife with babe in his arms. The Grandmaster's chair remained empty. "Alright then," his voice echoed through the large room. "Shall we begin?" Passing the little one back to Coci, he stood back up to address the gathering of Silver Jedi filling the room. "You all likely know me and my wife here, so I'll skip the introductions and get straight to the meat of this meating..."

A few seconds of the most awkward silence followed, broken by the sound of Thurion giggling at his own stupid pun. "Sorry, bit of dad humour," he apologised before continuing. "I believe it is common knowledge at this point that Grandmaster Crieff has unceremoniously stepped down mere weeks into her tenure to pursue other things, and we wish her the best. This vacuum has, however, left the Order without a clear leader. In the interim, the Assembly has convened to handle any critical decisions, but in its current state the Order requires direction, clear and decisive."

"So it is that we meet here today to decide who among us will be the next Grandmaster. Now, none of you get in your heads to nominate me for the position, you hear? I ain't sitting in that chair ever again."

Upon sitting back down he turned to his wife and whispered for her ears only. "Do you think they got the pun?"

It then sat from his vantage point on the sideline Ronin watched as Master Coci husband stood and spoke his mind. And no sooner end things with a line that sort made him chuckle slightly given the dual meaning behind his words. But then again now was not the time dwell on such idea so he figured to leave it be for now and try to follow along with the proceeding although. In the back his mind .... thought to linger since his return how much true words spoke were. That in regards to the danger things were and how he would not want to be the one having led the charge into that. Not that he figured anyone would be looking forward or would easily take to that to that given the little speech Master Thurion had given.

Kurayami listened to [member="Thurion Heavenshield"] closely as he began the meeting...with a terrible pun. He couldn't help but chuckle a bit at how bad of a pun it truly was, but humor was not a bad way to broach what could end up being a rather touchy subject. What he said about the way in which Sorel left was by now not something in debate, and the wishes for the best for her on the path she had felt called down was something he was sure the others would agree with. What was spoken about the power vacuum left by the suddenness of the unexpected departure rang all too true. The Assembly was something he remembered Raylia having been called to before, but he himself had never been present at one that he could recall. Whether the consensus would be close as to the Grandmaster position he had no idea, but he wondered who, if any here would speak up other than [member="Arisa Yune"] to provide another option. While Thurion had been acting Grandmaster during most all of Kurayami's time as part of the SJO the was the speech was given made it clear that the man had no want to hold such a position ever again, and he couldn't blame him. Especially with a newborn child.

"Ronin it is good to see you well", she gave the knight a smile as he addressed her. He had come along way since their first meeting and progressed with his desire to remember the past. It had plagued him so much, and probably would for some time to come but this was his path and through it Ronin would become stronger not only as Jedi but a person as well. It was unfortunate that they could not speak more, but there was pressing matters.

Taking a seat in the Assembly Thurion passed their son to her, there was no stopping a smile forming on her lips as she looked down into her son's face. He is nestled against her and fast asleep, no doubt the proceeding of little interest to him if not dull enough to escape into the land of dreams. And so it should be.

Honestly Thurion's joke was simply appalling yet drew a smile on her face with mirth, more so for the reaction of the others to it and as he sat back near her, she shook her head in mock disbelief. She leaned over and whispered for his ears only, "Honestly Thurion, you just made a complete sausage of yourself".

But for the moment, she would remain silent on her thoughts regarding the position of grand master as she had her misgivings over the matter and she wanted to see the wisdom from those around her before setting forth her opinion.

It was not her place to speak, so while keeping a small profile Jairdain continued to sit and listen to each point of view and take mental notes about the people involved in the speaking.

A strong person was needed to lead any people and Silver's were no exception.

In her short time with both the Silver Jedi and the Dominion, she had to truly see a powerful ruler. With the Jedi though that word wasn't quite the correct one. Maybe guiding hand? However it worked out or whatever word was needed, the leadership of Jedi core had been fragmented and needed to get put back together.

A cool head was needed for such a position and while she did not know Arisa well on a personal level, their interactions so far indicated she could be the best person currently around for this.

"Ronin it is good to see you well"

Came her words which brought a smile on his face despite the seeming seriousness of the occasion. For if anything she was to him a beacon of hope and at best someone he felt a owe a deep depth of gratitude. A mentor or parental figure in his life for whom motivate him to make the best to better himself. Despite the somewhat past or lack of came from.....despite the stuggles or hardship he now had a path to hopefully center him.

But then thru the force, he sent her a respectful reply.

' Good see you as well Master Coci....'

Then all attention as was all those present turns back to the task at hand.

The event was injected with some levity as Thurion made his introduction, not missing his chance to slip in a few dad jokes. It elicited a small smile from Arisa as she listened. Thirdas was fortunate enough to have such a lovely father, cheese and all.

Understandably,
Thurion wasn't ever looking to ever return to the post of Grandmaster, and she didn't blame him in the slightest. He had done his part to the best of his ability, and now it was time for him to have some much need respite as the next generation took the lead.

It appeared that none of the other masters were quite ready to throw their names up to the gauntlet. Her stomach began to knot as she gradually came to the realization that it may have to be her to assume the title. A frightening prospect for the young Master still trying to find her way in some respects.

Still, someone was better than no one, and it was a job she could grow in if given the chance. Right now, the Silver Order needed some well versed in the military arts and political craft, which were her bread and butter. Her experience as a spiritual leader was lacking, but she imagined that was something other Masters could help her with. She didn't need to be a master at everything so much as being a capable manager and executive who knew what to delegate.

"I...I nominate myself," she started, knots growing. "I know I'm not the best Jedi ever, but I feel that have
the capability to see us through to victory against the Sith and all those who threaten the people under our care. Some people have different ideas of what Jedi should be, great crusaders, or servants of the Light, but I personally live by this simple axiom: leave the world better than you found it. To that end, I'm willing to do all that is necessary."

She became quiet again, no grand speeches prepared. She simply spoke from the
heart, and hoped that the others would see that she was sincere in her commitment to the mission of the Silver Order.

"I support Arisa Yune's nomination: in these troubled times, spirituality is but one component in a larger ensemble. That is not to say that it should take a backseat however. Few enough among the Silver Jedi would even be well-versed enough in the military arts to even contemplate such a station, especially since the entire Silver Jedi military ultimately responds to the Grandmaster and it was painfully clear in the Clone Wars what happens when command befalls on someone with no desire or skill to do so. With that said, because I know that few enough could actually show promise as war leaders, we have to be mindful of who will spearhead our war effort"

The First Battle of Sarapin, where Jor Drakas was handed the command of the Kaer Orbital Platform and later the planetary garrison of Sarapin, and also Jabiim, to name the greatest two failures of Jedi commanders that were due to their merits as commanders, and not due to some treachery. [member="Kurayami Bloodborn"] might be a good starfighter commander, and [member="Thurion Heavenshield"] on the ground, but [member="Catherine Soja"] would be swiftly be transferred to an instructor position at the SJ Military Academy (or whatever facility was in use to train SJ Army officers) if Jessica had her way. [member="Arisa Yune"] she trusted, but [member="Coci Heavenshield"]... might have a variety of roles to choose from, with a number of Jedi she had too little information on, beyond [member="Jakkor Kess"]. [member="Tempest Yore"], [member="Jairdain"] might be better suited for roles outside the primary chains of command, she knew almost nothing about [member="Ronin Wendigo"], [member="Kaden"] was a rather raw, yet skilled Jedi, [member="Audren Sykes"] might be another person to get used to, and so were @Joshua DragonsFlame, [member="Xander Carrick"] and [member="Yuroic Xeraic"].

"Also, regardless of the outcome on Dromund Kaas, the victor will have both the spoils and the burden of reconstruction. Plus the Resurgent Empire might have been weakened by recent developments, and its ability to mount a defense is limited at best. But we have to watch out for the Sith Ascendancy: unlike the Resurgent Empire, they can fight a protracted campaign and actually be a tactical threat: thus far the Resurgent Empire has showed us that they had more than a few weaknesses that we can readily exploit"

Makari had been a fly on the wall during the procession. He knew he had no business being here, being a padawan who had only been with the Silvers for a few months, but he didn’t refuse the invitation when it was given by his mentor, Rugo, who had recently been elevated to a master. While Cathbodua oversaw the bulk of his training, Rugo was his mentor when it came to the military arts. No, Makari had no interest in such matters, but Rugo had never really cared for his opinions really.

Among the Jedi here, the Jedi Master Arisa was the only one he knew, although the two had never spoken personally. It was more of a he had seen her often from a distance type of thing, when the two of them had been a part of the Republic, although back then Makari had just been a civilian who was still flirting with the idea of being a Jedi.

As she offered her name up for consideration, Makari wasn’t surprised in the slightest. She was a very competent person from what he knew, and she definitely had the support of her peers, who often didn’t think twice about following her into battle.

The meeting started without fanfare. Twice, as a matter of fact. Once when Arisa began, then stopped as people were still arriving. Minutes later, Thurion started with a bad joke. This time most everyone had already arrived though, and paid attention. The contents were fairly basic: they didn't have a Grand Master, and while the Assembly had stepped up a leader was still necessary.

He'd heard Arisa's opening, as had several of the others, and no objections were raised. Strong leader, pragmatic, able to make compromises. Very different from what he'd understood of Sorel's philosophy. The compromise part, that was. The rest of it was actually pretty darn similar. Sorel hadn't been one to compromise which had ultimately led to her decision to leave. Audren respected that she held to her beliefs that tightly, but it was also a weakness. The brittle blade broke, and the fighter who couldn't roll with a punch suffered the heaviest hit.

That said, too much compromise was not a good thing. It could very well lead to them becoming precisely what they opposed, and would be all the worse for it. There had to be limits, and they could not be on a sliding scale. The Master was by no means opposed to Arisa becoming the Grand Master. That she was young and one of the newest among the Masters didn't bother him. The depth of her involvement with the Kiribian government and military would need to be scrutinized. But her views on compromise were what he was most concerned about.

"What are the limits to compromise? Just how flexible are we willing to be?"

He purposely did not set his name forward. He didn't feel it necessary, and he didn't want the position. With Ceredir's projects in the works and TransGalMeg just moving to secure additional footholds in the market, and his own duties as a Jedi on top of that, the Sephi was busy enough. Taking on another project was by no means needed at this point.

Arisa sat back in her chair, fighting back the urge to wince after throwing up her name for consideration. She fully expected the worst, to be flat out rejected. Much to her relief, nothing like that didn't occur, with one of the other Masters present giving vocal support to Arisa.

Understandably,
Audren had brought up a question about how far the Silver Order should be willing to compromise. She decided to speak again, finding this an opportunity to voice some long-standing concerns she had about the Silver Order.

"Within the context of the Silver Order, that would simply mean being more proactive in engaging threats before they've gotten out of hand. If we look to the south, the Galactic Alliance ignored the threat the First Order posed until it was much too late, and now it remains unclear if they can even stand up to the FO even with outside support. Here, we face the same problem of various camps of Sith and Imperial groups springing up left and right. If we remain passive and allow our foes to build themselves up with impunity, then in the long term, everyone will suffer more when we are finally forced to engage them. Much better to do it now and minimalize damage."

This may have been a tall order for many of her peers, who had split from the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order to escape their growing militancy, but there were no more buffers for the Silvers and the enemies were at the gates. It was time to finally make a stand.

"I'd never suggest we become like the Galactic Alliance, who have committed some...questionable acts in their prosecution of
war against the First Order that I can't support. There will be a need for more military action, but we can also begin utilizing more soft power to achieve our goals. The point of it all is, that we just need to start doing more than what we are now. Because while we sit on the defensive, we're proving to be little more than a liability to the people we've sworn to protect."

Kurayami had no issue with Arisa nominating herself, nor the others who spoke up in support of her. What she said about military action against the growing threats at the borders of the SJO made sense to him. The one thing that he was unsure of though was exactly how this answered Audren's question to her. He would admit that the more he thought on the answer given the more it irked him as it seemed to be a deflection. It was this that finally got him to stand from where he had taken a seat and speak. When he did he was careful to make sure that his tone was inquiring, not aggressive.

"Arisa, as you have pointed out there are a number of growing threats, and you wish to see action taken to neutralize these threats, both in terms of military and unarmed tactics. You have also said that you see the necessity of working alongside groups that do not strictly align themselves with the Jedi Code or even the Lightside only. All of this I feel is admirable. Flexibility is not only helpful in times of conflict it is absolutely a requisite. While your answer just now seemed to provide more detail in how you plan to deal with the rising threats both right at our borders and nearby, I personally feel that you did not address the question posed to you by Master Sykes. It is possible that I simply misunderstood you, if that is the case I apologize. I will ask once more for clarification in the matter, how far exactly do we bend, what are the limits of our accommodations to allies to quell the number of threats we face if not eliminate them altogether?"

As he finished speaking he nodded towards Arisa in deference before sitting back down.

[member="Arisa Yune"], [member="Audren Sykes"], [member="Coci Heavenshield"], [member="Thurion Heavenshield"], [member="Josh DragonsFlame"], [member="Xander Carrick"], [member="Joza Perl"], [member="Catherine Soja"], [member="Jessica Med-Beq"], [member="Ronin Wendigo"], [member="Yuroic Xeraic"], [member="Kaden"], [member="Jakkor Kess"], [member="Tempest Yore"], [member="Makari Valeal"]

She thought she had answered Audren's question, but more probing from Kurayami would elicit an immediate response from her to provide additional clarification.

"What's really being asked of me is to draw an arbitrary line in the sand for our limits of compromise in a vacuum, and I simply can't do that. I'm going to have to take things on a case by case basis. That said, I'm not advocating for anything cruel and unusual. There will be no glassing of
planets, or war crimes committed. Galactic standards on armed conflict will still be respected. There's not even a question about that. Those who work with us will be forced to abide by those same standards as they assist us, or suffer the consequences."

"If it will help, then I can provide you with a concrete example to get a better idea about how we should do things. When the Sith reemerged within the Stygian Caldera, we should have continued the fight against them, even after the unauthorized bombing of Korriban City. A tragic event, but one that pales in comparison the act of Silver Order abandoning the millions of inhabitants of the Caldera after we had come with the promise to protect them and help provide a better life. We did so with the thought that we would spare those poor souls the misery of our wars against the Sith, but the exact opposite happened. Where do you all think the Sith collects its recruits and conscripts? Who do you think it was that we killed at
Midvinter? Dromund Kaas? By leaving the people of the Caldera to the whims of the Sith, we condemned them to a life of serfdom, forever pawns to the callous Sith Lords who control them for their own self-destructive ends. Continuing on with the casualties caused by that campaign would have been a small price to pay for the greater good."

"Those are the kind of scenarios I think about when I mentioned making compromises. Moving out of our comfort zones, accepting that things are not always going to work out perfectly, even with the best intentions and the most careful planning. When we hit that inevitable snag, we analyze our mistakes and move forward with new wisdom gained, not retreat when things get hard and shirk our duties."

That had probably been the first time she had openly shared her opinion about that particular battle. As the Galactic Alliance and New Jedi Order had represented one uncomfortable extreme for her, the Silver Jedi at that time had represented another. The right direction, she felt was something that toed the line between said extremes for a more balanced approached.

The Heavenshield pair opted to remain largely quiet as the Assembly discussed faction politics and philosophies, preferring to be bystanders regarding this particular matter. They were true to their word; moving forward it would be up to the younger generations to dictate the future of the Order, for their time had come and gone with the passing of decades at the helm. Thurion had every confidence in the wills and thoughts of these eager men and women, all possessing that special light behind their eyes - that spark for greatness which resides in all sentient beings. It had been his great honour and privilege to see each and every one of them learn and grow during his tenure.

He reached for Coci hand as she sat beside him for a gentle squeeze, only to smile at the sight of little Thirdas wriggling again. That lad never could remain in one place for long, and so he beckoned for Coci to pass him over. Father and son looked upon one another, and as Thirdas reached for his bearded chin Thurion leaned down to nibble on the toddlers little fingers between his lips much to Thirdas' amusement. The sound of baby laughter filled the room all of a sudden, making Thurion freeze as the attention was turned on him for the moment. A Jedi Master and former Grandmaster, with baby fingers between his lips.

"Sorry..." came his rather awkward apology. "But I suppose, since I apparently have the floor," he then said, rising from his seat with babe held to his chest, "I might as well share my thoughts on the matter."

"Arisa, you are a proven battlefield commander and a skillful tactician. You have served the Order and the people under our protection with distinction for as long as I've known you, and you are wiser than you give yourself credit for." He sighed. "I made the decision to pull our forces from the Caldera as soon as I heard of what had happened on Korriban. Abandoning our people to become servants of the Sith is on my hands, as is their blood. I did not wish for more mistakes to be made in the name of saving face; enough blood had been spilled."

"The Sith are divided," he continued. "Divided by their pride, their selfishness, and their lust for power. The empires of old did not fall because of lack of military might or means of defending themselves - they saw to their own downfall by their inability to stand together, choosing rather to rebel against their own than to face the powers arrayed against them. The power of the dark side is strong, but not strong enough to bring people together. No one man can ever hope to accomplish the likes of which a group of like-minded individuals can achieve, united behind a clear purpose and something to aspire to. Such is the Jedi way."

"I am with Master Yune. The Order requires action, to shake the dust from its shoulders and show the galaxy that we are the protectors we say we are." Thurion turned to [member="Arisa Yune"] and bowed his head. "Do for the Order what I could not, Arisa. What I lacked the decisiveness to do." And with that, he slumped back into his seat with this final show of authority left in him taken off his shoulders. Now the 'reign of the Heavenshields' was truly ended.

Well this was certainly ending up as an interesting turn of events. There was a baby with his fingers in the father's mouth, which Yuroic felt a pang of jealousy. That child certainly seemed to have loving parents. Something he could never have. However, more interesting was the move of Arisa, his Master, becoming Grand Master of the Order. It meant that he definitely had to sharpen his look up. He was possibly going to be the Padawan of the Grand Master, he felt a strong surge of anxiety as it was putting him somewhat in the spotlight. He was going to have other Padawan look to him, expecting great things from him because she was a great Jedi and obviously one of the strongest. It was still so early in his training that the build up pressure felt insurmountable.

Yuroic calmed his breathing down. This wasn't about him, he had to stay as stoic as possible. It wasn't even certain that she would get the promotion though he could not see why not. She seemed to be a great Jedi to him. Yuroic watched the scene closely. His ears listening to all that was said. A big lost in battle cause Thurion to set away from power, at least that was the impression he was getting. It must be hard for him, Yuroic had never been in battle, had never lost people because of his own mistake. It was difficult to empathise but he could see the same look of despair that he saw on many refugees from war-torn planets, hiding on Nar Shaddaa.

Then there was the confusion over the flexibility of the Order. He wasn't sure what they were talking about he felt assured that Arisa would know how to handle their questions. Perhaps one day in the far future he could be within that circle. It was a foolish dream that gave Yuroic a silent chuckle. He would be happy just to become a Knight at this rate.

When it came to decisions about compromise, this was not an area for Jairdain to speak about. Her own people were very strict and did not allow for negotiation when it came to matters on Force users. Here, she would bow to people more experienced until she learned more about it. It would be a long journey for the young knight before she would be able to fully aside her personal feelings and allow for the greater good.

She had spent some little time working with people that didn't follow her ideals. None of them would she consider bad or evil. Though she didn't consider any of them to be friends, they were allies and people she would help if the need arose.

Hearing the conversation between the Masters made her consider speaking. Jairdain was only a Knight though and somehow it didn't feel right for her to speak out. This would something for her to talk about with Master Yune in private if she had any concerns. The young knight had already spoke at length with Arisa about how she had grown up and what she thought about that now. There was no reason to rehash that out here so Jairdain held her tongue on that matter.

The words of Master Heavenshield though made her wonder at what made the sith she knew so different than the ones he spoke about. Those of the Dominon had worked together and there had been no infighting that she saw. Of course, these were the only ones she had ever met outside those of her people. So her own lack of knowledge kept her from speaking.

Another thing keeping her from speaking was the fact she didn't know many people here. They all knew one another, who was she to break up their conversation about matters where she had so little knowledge? She wasn't a Master and so really had no voice this assembly.

Tempest quickly realized this gathering was not in fact an inquiry about the Dominion and its inner workings. She could not believe that the most important decision concerning the Jedi would be made so casually. No meditation. She knew she did not even belong here. She slumped down in her chair, hoping she might slip onto the floor unnoticed, and she could slink away. Fat chance is most likely.

'Where the hell is the food?'

Then she got the impression that [member="Thurion Heavenshield"] was the previous Grandmaster. He did not seem at all like she thought of him. The Grandmaster who ignored her that time she hoped to introduce herself as she stood at his very door in the Temple on Voss. Her mouth dropped open, a twinge of ire flamed behind her eyes.

'Of course he is not Grandmaster anymore. Not if he was raised to the honor in a manner such as this.' A faint snicker escaped her.

Again her mind drifted to the possibility of catered food. Num-nums. 'It would be the most singular important issue for the Jedi, were all at large amongst the entire Universe actually present in order to be considered.' It was a matter for members of the Council. 'We do have a Council? And it would actually be of the utmost importance to elect a true Grandmaster, with proof being that my mind would not so carelessly drift to food.'

All in all, she liked [member="Arisa Yune"] and wishes her well. But wether or not the Force is behind her escalation to such a position, Tempest can only hope. But surely traditions of how they would be elected were put in place for a reason! Unless Tempest has it all wrong; maybe the old ways were put aside long ago.

'That would be what I get for being raised apart from everyone else; sheer ignorance! Thank you Master!'

It was then seeming after taking a seat not far from Master Coci in the hopes speak with her later. For after just come back after spending some time away from training with some the other Master. He had at best seen very little of her now that he'd so far learn they apparently moved off. With a son, that now.he'd noted was cooing and no less letting his presence know reminded him that .... had few question he'd wanted speak with her about. But left them for later as looking about he couldn't help note how much seem had changed. With all the new faces about along with finding out about bit of the current situation.

At any rate he did his best follow thru with all the talk thought in back his mind felt relieved. As someone spoke up seem ablet to take up the challenge fill up the void left by need of new leadership....
