DOOR! Gabriel yelled out to Jeremiel, the Team and Vigilant Reaper “Jumpmaster” who went to the back of the ship and opened up the loading ramp. The rush of air brought in an incredible blast of “cool” throughout the loading bay. There was not a full team, only Gabriel, Raguel, Jeremiel, Connel, and Cartri. This was a training mission during a very rare open moment. So it was going to help the Padawan the most, hopefully.

Connel sat next to his Padawan, both layered in H.A.L.O. Gear Have you ever jumped out of a perfectly good ship before? He smirked. This is a training day for you focused solely on one thing. Temperament. Now, I wouldn’t be telling you about this ahead of time, but you’re going to need to know.

GREEN LIGHT! The hue filled the loading bay as the lights were on, it was time for them to go. Raguel, Gabriel, they were already moving to the ramp as was Jeremiel. Connel pulled his helmet on and stood.

Follow me. Before Cartri would be able to respond, Connel was “waddling” (for lack of a better explanation with that much gear on) to the loading ramp and soon jumping off as the female loadmaster of the ship was by the door controls looking out at him fall… like she was looking at something in particular.

Cartri had always been fine with shuttles for as long as he could remember. Crashing never really bothered him, and neither did motion sickness. No, it was the insane things people did with shuttles that terrified him, like jumping out of a perfectly good one with only the vaguest idea of how not to die in the process.

So when Connel asked him that exact question, Cartri's head snapped up, his expression twisting into a mix of concern and outright betrayal.
"Uhhh, no?!" he blurted, the rest of his response dying somewhere in his throat.

Slowly, he pushed himself out of his seat and cautiously edged toward the ramp, watching Connel secure his helmet like this was all perfectly normal behavior.

Then Connel told him to follow. Before Cartri could even begin protesting, the man hurled himself out of the shuttle.

Cartri stared after him in horror.

He took a few deep, steadying breaths as he shuffled closer to the edge. To say he feared for his life would have been an understatement. The only thing that came close was the time a Sith bounty hunter had nearly killed him, but that had been completely different circumstances. Far less falling involved, for one thing.

"Come on, Cartri, pull yourself together…" he muttered under his breath as he hesitantly stepped onto the edge of the ramp. "It's not like you've blown up a—whoaaaAHHHH!"

A boot slammed lightly into his back, and suddenly the teen was tumbling into a chaotic freefall, his yell ripped away by the rushing wind.

The rest of the jumpers followed him out, all but laughing at his scream, but they watched and followed to make sure he would be safe and his fall controlled. Connel slowed his descent as he neared the ground, slowing and letting them catch up to him. Soon they linked until reaching the right point to let go. Connel pulled Cartri’s chord and then his own, and they landed on the ground, Connel’s landing was relaxed and controlled showing his experience.

Gathering his gear and waiting, he watched the rest of the group land, each showing their own level of experience and skill.

For the first few seconds, Cartri flailed his arms in panic as the ground rushed ever closer beneath him. He wasn't prepared for this at all, let alone the possibility of being turned into orange paste when he splattered against the earth below. But when the teen finally forced himself to look around, the rest of the team were calmly descending beside him, already preparing for the next step.

Suddenly, someone to his right yanked the cord on his suit.

The sharp jolt upward made him gasp, his free fall abruptly slowed by the chute opening above. Taking a few shaky breaths, Cartri knew he wasn't out of danger yet. The ground was still racing toward him, just at a slightly less terrifying speed.

"Ah, shit…"

He hit harder than the others.

The moment his feet touched down, his momentum pitched him forward. Unable to catch himself, he was dragged helmet-first across the ground before tumbling into a rough roll and finally coming to a stop.

For a moment, Cartri lay motionless.

Then a groan escaped from inside his helmet, and he slowly rolled onto his back.

Connel, and everyone else watched as Cartri finished his first jump. There was no way to describe or walk through what would happen, he just had to experience it for himself. So they started to sprint as he was pulled and started running. It was funny, make no mistake, as each of them had pretty much experienced the same thing but he had to be reassured.

Cartri was naturally in a heap, and Connel fought back a laugh as he held out a hand to help the kid up. Sorry about your experience, but it had to be “hands on”. Once the kid was groaning on his feet, Connel would ask simply. Tell me, what did you see? What type of lesson do you think that I am trying to teach you here?

Cartri felt a hand grip his arm and steadily pull him back to his feet. Limping upright, he looked over at Connel and let out a strained chuckle.

"Hands on? You can say that again…"

Every part of him ached, not enough to be unbearable, but enough to make every movement irritating. Still, he refused to let it get to him. Worse had happened to him in the short time he'd lived in this universe.

"What did I learn?" he repeated, pausing to think before answering. "To adapt to any situation I'm thrown into, no matter how unprepared I am."

That seemed like the obvious answer. Connel hadn't briefed him or said a single word about the exercise until it was already over. In a real mission, who knew what could happen when the time came, he'd have to think on the spot and do whatever it took to survive.

Connel, and the rest of the team, wouldn't always be there to save him.

Connel nodded as Cartri gave a strong answer. This lesson was indeed about adaptation, and it was not finished as the Padawan thought he had the whole idea. However he would have to adapt some more. The Padawan needed to understand that adaptation was not a one-time event but a continuous process. Connel emphasized that true growth came from embracing change, learning from experiences, and being flexible in both thought and action as challenges evolved in unexpected ways.

Great answer, you’re mostly right. I’m reminded of an old phrase… “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” Or in your case, a boot in the back. Don’t ask me who said it, probably some puncher… anyway… Connel loosening up as Omega Squad stood in a circle gathering chutes. My point is, everything… as I am sure you know… is controlled when learning but out in the field that goes out the window. You handled yourself better than I did the first few times I jumped. One thing you failed to do though, can you tell me what it is?

Cartri listened closely to Connel and let out a light chuckle once he finished. It was pretty obvious what he had forgotten to do, actually, two things, now that he thought about it.

"I forgot to stay calm and... y'know... I forgot to pull my chute," he admitted, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. If it weren't for Connel, he probably would've ended up as a smear on the ground by now. Truth be told, Cartri hadn't even known how to pull the damn thing in the first place; Connel hadn't exactly given him a rundown before they jumped.

After a brief moment of hesitation, Cartri finally worked up the courage to ask about Connel's own experience.

"What happened during your first jump?" he asked curiously. "I doubt you forgot to pull your chute like I did..."

Cartri was starting to get it, no surprise as he had a good head on his shoulders. The question is, how far could this go. Connel actually thought about the day they made their first “Reaper Drop”, normally one could use a jump pack, but this was something totally different, served its purpose, but different nonetheless.

I did what you should always do. I knew that no one around me was necessarily going to be able to help so I trusted in the Force. I DID forget to pull my chute and at the last minute used the Force to push against the ground and slow my descent. Not fun. Connel shrugged as he pulled a couple of bottles of water to his hand and offered one. My friend, you have all of the skills you need to be an amazing, wise Jedi Knight, it’s just a matter of opening your mind to them. Trust in yourself, and more importantly trust in the Force.

He leaned back. Everything else is ancillary.

Cartri's eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"You didn't do it either?" he asked with a shrug. A slight grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. "And here I was thinking I was the only stupid kid who pulled the chute." If he hadn't, Cartri wouldn't have had the added safety net of technology to keep him alive. He was still learning the ways of the Force and discovering the limits of what he could do with it. Stopping himself from plummeting to a brutal death was well beyond his abilities for now.

"At the moment, I trust technology to keep me safe," he continued. "It took me a long time to reach that point, and I'm sure it'll be the same with the Force."

If he could learn to trust the Force as much as he trusted technology, the combination would be incredibly powerful. How he was supposed to achieve that, however, was still a mystery. Even so, it was worth pursuing.

Glancing around at their surroundings, a new question occurred to him.

"Where did we even land, anyway?"

Show me a perfect Jedi who does everything right the first time and I will show you a youngling’s storybook. Gesturing for the kid to take a walk, Connel looked around. My friend, I’m still learning about the Force, Frell my Dad was still… a part of trusting is a part of learning. It all takes time.

He smirked as he gestured to their gear. Tech is a good thing… as for this place? Welcome to our home away from home. This is the Shadow Sanctuary. Originally my childhood home, but converted into a clandestine base for Shadows and other Jedi… hiding in plain sight in Sith Territory..

"I thought I was looking at one right now, but I guess I was wrong." Cartri smirked teasingly, giving a slow nod as he acknowledged that even Connel was still learning about the Force despite his immense power. "So even the wisest and most powerful Jedi still have room to grow, huh? I guess you can never truly master the Force."

Glancing around, he took in the surroundings of the hidden base. The moment Connel mentioned they were deep within Sith territory, Cartri's head snapped back toward him.

"Say that again, we're on a Sith planet?" he asked, surprise clear in his voice. "How in the stars do you keep this place hidden from them? Surely they've come close to finding it a few times."

Scratching the back of his neck, he let out a nervous laugh.

"Either way, you've got to admit it's pretty impressive. You've literally built a base right under their noses."

Thank you for the compliment, but I screw up plenty. Connel nodded, his mannerisms softening.

Raphael could be heard a few feet away playfully grumbling ] Boy, DOES he!

Connel just laughed and shook his head. Okay!

When Cartri asked about how the place was hiding, Connel shrugged. May father built this when Alderaan was a part of the Galactic Alliance. It was taken off every map and he took that time along with my uncle to build up systems and protocols that keep it hidden further. Any sensors, be it water, aerial or orbital see nothing but ocean. Originally so I could grow up in privacy, only to morph into a place that focuses on the betterment of those like us.

We changed the Temperament and Adapted.
