Lightsaber Crystals And You
Location: Commenor, Central University of Commenor, Lecture Hall 303
Truth be told, he was nervous. Very much so nervous. He was comfortable with the topic he would be teaching, but, he had never taught a lesson before. He stood at the bottom of the lecture hall, facing several of the eager learners that had gathered, and looking to Aayla for support. He gave a goofy grin, feeling rather silly standing before the audience in his diplomats robes. Several samples of crystals were on display, their names shown below their holographic images. He placed his arms at the small of his back, moving out from behind the desk he had set up his display, and circling around the front of it. His eyes looked to the ground, biting on his lip as the sensation of nervousness tussled about in his stomach. Odd, he felt more confident when he faced that Sith Lord down on Felucia rather then now. Funny how that worked.
He let his mind flow into the force, feeling the tension in his muscles fade, his mind becoming clear, more focused. He knew this stuff inside and out. There was no reason to be concerned. Aayla wasn't far from him, and at worse, he might get a few tidbits wrong. No sweat. He halted before his desk, looking up at the various attendants, as he let out a deep breath. "Welcome. I know for some of you, this topic might be confusing, or boring, but let me assure you that it is neither of these things." He opened his hand, a small aqua gem in his hand; one Aayla would recognize from the tomb Rikkiad. "Lightsabers crystals are bonded to their user, often in ways that modify the weapon itself. Allow me to elaborate." He placed the gem back onto the desk, his finger tapping a display as one crystal would increase in size, taking up much of the bottom floor that Kadan was walking about, the padawan standing in the midst of a large phond crystal. "This is a Phond crystal, it can be found on various worlds, but when added to a lightsaber, it has a unique effect. It can magnify the fiery intensity of the lightsaber." He pressed a small device in his hand, as the image changed to that of another crystal, this one near identical to the one Kadan held before. "This one, is called an Ankarres Sapphire. This one is unique, as this crystal only reacts with that of lightside jedi, and with it, greatly magnifies their power. Crystals can also be bonded to particular jedi, sometimes, even through family lines." He glanced to Aayla, smiling knowingly at her, though not calling attention to her. "The crystal is just as importance in the function of the saber, and the demeanor of the jedi as their very own connection to the force."
"Today, I will explain what one should consider when choosing a crystal, and the important of a successful bond." He pressed another switch, the hologram faded, and now, he could begin his lecture. "Before we begin, are there any questions?" He looked to the crowd, waiting for someone to inquire about the topic, and hoping that he had enough wit about him to answer in a clever fashion.

She sat at the front of the class, listening intently to everything discussed. She did carry her sabers today; but her weapons were holopads, and holopens. She titled her most recent page 'Saber Crystals', leaning back and feeling his tension within the Force. She smiled at that, trying to draw some of it onto her to help it dissipate. She was already calm, and with their bond it was easy to share the feeling. Allow his tension to quickly fade into nothing. When he began to speak, she scribbled along his words in concise sentences.

'Phond Crystal - Used to magnify intensity of saber blade'

She looked back up, observing it and glancing back over her shoulder at the classroom. They had done him pretty bad with the amount of people in here. She thought it was just going to be a small class; this was a fething seminar... Not to mention many students were streaming this, some viral outbreak had many people on the fritz about going out. In any case, if he was going, she was going to go too. She paid rapt attention to him as well, hoping if he saw her paying attention he may have been more content in going into detail about it. She couldn't help but grin as he spoke, a little shocked he was as smart as he was; as terrible she she knew it sounded.

He just... Didn't talk this much usually... Then again, had she ever given him the opportunity to talk this much? She was always over talking him. She wanted to stop that, and today only showed why she should.

'Ankarres Sapphire - Unique Saber Crystal, Magnified users Force Propensity (Doubles? Triples?)'

She stopped then, head snapping up briefly as she blushed. He had called her out without doing so, no doubt able to feel the slight shock he had given her. She didn't need to write down that bit.

Her hand shot up as he asked about questions however... If he picked her, the question asked would be simple.

"Can you specify what you mean my magnified? Regarding the Ankarres?"

Lady Hanaya Enzar sat with the gathered students, with her canine daughter sat at her feet. Nobody had tried to pet her, which pleased her greatly, having recently visited a nearby primitive world where none of the children could understand that Elena wasn't a pet

She had not visited Kashykk before, it was a beautiful planet, the swamps were not that unlike her home of Codru Secundus, albeit much warmer and with more trees. She would make notes on those trees later, she wondered whether they would be hardy enough to withstand a transplantation and subsequent Codru winters.

Today was going to be interesting, she had done limited research on kyber as a power focussing tool, but genuinely knew very little. She thought of the four sabers that sat attached loosely to her belt, she had no idea what sort of crystal they were, only that they were yellow, maybe that told her what they were? "Do these types relate to the colour of the blade, mine are yellow, but I have seen many different hues?" She felt Elena's eyes on her, this was like being in school again, it would be a good experience for her daughter to see Hanaya being a humble student instead of commanding the room like the Queen she was, she wished however that she hadn't told her daughter she thought the professor attractive, the judgemental look was priceless.

She looked again around herself, trying to gauge the reaction of the others too her question, wanting to get an idea of where she was in the pecking order, some were writing frantically, whilst others were reading and listening closely.

Her datapad was in front of her, opting for the tech option instead of the physical one. Her notes were shorthand, the datapad input device set to silent as she kept her eyes on the presentation and presenter before her while typing away. It was at times an unnerving skill for others to witness as she kept a stoic face while listening. She gave no outward signs of approval or disapproval, though there had been at times complaints that her studious expression resembled that of a scowl with alarming frequency.

Lhtsbr crstl bnd usr, oft mod wepn. She listened intently, still fixated on the presentation before her fingers flew across the projected keyboard once more. Phond crstl, fnd var wrlds, ad lhtsbr, mgnfy intens of lhtsbr. Anyone reading the notes later without context would likely be horrified at the severely lacking in any descriptors. Kadan continued on and her hands never seemed to stop.

Ankarres Sphir niqe rect wit lhtsd jdi grtly mgnfis pwr. Crstl bnd to prtculr jdi, somtms, fam lns Her eyes flickered between Kadan and Aayla at the front, and a soft smile formed in a there and gone flash of knowing. She still did not fail at taking her force-forsaken shorthand notes. Crstl as imprt fnctin of sbr nd dmenr of jdi as cnect to frce. Aayla's hand rose as Phalsi paused in her typing. Her hands were waiting, though her attention shifted to Aayla before moving back to Kadan. Her eyes flashed to another when they asked their question.

A new face that she hadn't seen before, but would make an effort to remember as she listened. A curiosity in it's own right. The idea of a crystals color being affected or being the source of an effect hadn't crossed her mind. Her own hand rose as well, an offshoot of the idea that crystals could bond with people down the line.

"The bonding of a crystal to its user; Does one pick the crystal and simply evoke a bond, or is the user picked? As well, does the bond require a familial blood connection or merely a constant presence in a familial setting in the case of adoption?" She narrowed the terms of her questions as best she could, though she realized quickly they might have opened a veritable second lecture by itself.

Lightsaber Crystals And You
So far, so good. Already, he was seeing lights come on in the minds of others, and as he finished his opening speech, questions soon emerged. A bright smile came over his face, as he was all to happy to explain the many questions that were sprung forth. Aayla was the first, and truthfully, he was heavily biased. The questions facing him would be difficult to explain, but he felt capable enough to address:
"Can you specify what you mean my magnified? Regarding the Ankarres?"

"Excellent question." He started, bringing into focus the Anakrres gem once more on the projector with the click of a switch. "Think of it as a conduit of power. Similar to if you were to couple some energy conductors to a swoop bike, you'd be able to generate much more thrust. The same concept applies here. The gem allows a jedi within the lightside to dig deeper, find greater clarity, and surpass their initial limits than if they had not had it." He had a more personal example he could use regarding Aayla's crystals as well, though he held off on it. No need to call more attention to her already. He turned towards the next question, though he spoke to Aayla via their bond, enjoying the pure excitement that she was emanating. 'Your saber crystal does this, don't know if you realized it.' Maybe he'd have to do more of these seminars. He found the woman who inquired this time to be of a species he hadn't encountered before, the four armed Codru Ji species. The woman had a younger child with her as well, making him wonder if perhaps they had come to learn from a jedi for a reason.
"Do these types relate to the colour of the blade, mine are yellow, but I have seen many different hues?"
"Another good question. Color depends on many aspects, and can vary wildly. For example, crystals form from minerals within a planet. This is known to us, however, these minerals affect how light passes through the crystal itself. The nature of the planet and the composition of the crystal is what determines this, which is why we see common colors such as blue and green, and rarer colors such as silver, black, and other colors. I hope that's a satisfactory answer." He turned to the next series of questions, and found Phalsi was the one inquiring. Thankfully, he had an answer for her as well.
"The bonding of a crystal to its user; Does one pick the crystal and simply evoke a bond, or is the user picked? As well, does the bond require a familial blood connection or merely a constant presence in a familial setting in the case of adoption?"
"Good question. The crystal is the one that can accept or reject the bond of the initial user. As for the familial blood, this event is not widly known, but what is believed, is that the crystal exists within the force, and it's possible that the crystal recognizes the familial presence, and enables the bond. Much like a dog you might have at home. It can smell you correct? Similar concept. The crystal can sense the connection between you, and your family, and allows you to bond with it, while rejecting others who seek the similar process." He clicked on his small device, as several lightsaber designs would be displayed, with a component break down on their crystals. "I hope everyone is happy with the answers thus far?" He asked, before moving on to the next topic.

Fascinating, thought Hanaya, she was informed that her own crystals came from an asteroid that shattered into four pieces on hitting the atmosphere and was found on a life long quest by one of her ancestors, but to be honest that sounded a bit like a child's story to her, it would be interesting to know where they came from? maybe a non-destructive mineral analysis would shed some light on that.

She listened intently to the other questions, making notes of her own, if the bond was familial, that would make a lot of sense as she was always told that she should train with her family sabers and them hand them down to the next force sensitive member of the family, which would one day be Elena she hoped.

Looking around she wondered how many of the other students were force sensitives and who were just inquisitives. The blonde at the front was clearly radiating force energy, and also seemed connected to the tutor somehow, it might be worth making a note. On her planet, knowledge was treasured above many things, so this was not only a learning experience, but also the chance to recruit people to lecture at her academies.

With so many of the silvers around, she wondered how well the real questions she wanted to ask would go down. Isotope-5 was a pain to work with, and she had heard that kyber would be a more stable alternative for powering weaponry, but this seemed like a more peaceful crowd for now.

"Professor, is it possible to trace the origins of a specific crystal, or set of crystals, using their chemical or physical properties?"

Des had joined the class quietly, sitting off to the side. She didn't recognize any of the faces except Phalsi, unlike some of the classes from before. And while this was considered an introductory one, she'd never had any real exposure other than her own research. The questions were good and thoughtful ones. And Kadan Scipora Kadan Scipora confirmed what she'd already experienced. From her belt hung two lightsabers. One she had inherited from her grandmother Karlize, a Jedi in her own right in her day. And the other was the lightsaber she'd constructed after attaining her own crystal.

While she had every right to use her grandmother's saber, building her own had been a testament to her abiltiies. It was designed for her sensibilities. It fit her hands better and the way she used a saber. But both were equally a part of her. Clearing her throat, she gently interposed her own question in an airy, lilting and flowing voice. "It's said that that some crystals are living, like Kyber crystals. What about those that aren't like diamonds, durindfires, and krayt dragon pearls? And synthetic lightsaber crystals, like those used by Master Skywalker?" She wasn't even sure some of those appeared in the records of the present-day Jedi. But .. .as someone displaced in time, the order she'd been inducted into had been built upon the bones of the teachings of those days.

From the back of the lecture hall, in the last row, sat an - arguably - scruffy looking individual. He wore scuffed black boots, worn blue pants, a black shirt and an aged jacket with a wide woolen collar. His blue eyes observed the display that took place further down the class hall, his expression curious, as he sat eased back with one leg up on the table. The initial introduction to several crystals was simple but effective, there was a lot of detail the explorer might have wanted to add, but this wasn't his class to teach. No, instead, Caen San Tekka was but an observer today by happenstance...

Glad I stopped in though, Caen thought to himself, as he looked between those who began to ask questions. Looks like the students aren't holdin' back. Good for them.

The answer regarding the bonding crystals caused Caen to raise his eyebrows, as he crossed his arms and wondered about those intricacies. While some of the more common knowledge was already known to the man, it was interesting to gain perspective from someone with the Force, as as the instructor clearly was. Esoteric topics like this were of interest to the explorer, as it helped to have more knowledge to perform his duties for the Archaeological Association, especially when a small detail could mean all the difference in safely removing a relic or not.

There was a moment when another attendee asked about synthetic crystals, specifically mentioning Skywalker, to which Caen raised an eyebrow and glanced her way. Was it possible that there was another student of antiquity in their midst? Well, granted, there were probably a few of them in the crowd, that was purely statistical, but to recall specifics on an old Jedi Master from multiple centuries ago was impressive. Caen pondered at whether he should approach the young woman after the class, but then turned his attention to speaking:

"Hey, sorry, Caen San Tekka. I'm not a student per se, at least not at the University proper," He began, before he shook his head and sat upright and lowered his leg from the desk. "I was passing by, I just delivered some stone tablets with some beautifully etched and readable hyeratic script, dating back several thousand years from a site on -- actually, not important, my question:

"To follow on from the possibility of locating a crystals location, from the young redheaded humanoid there, has there been any marked increases - or decreases - in crystal sites and the amount of viable Force-attuned crystals they provide? And where would you say is the most prolific crystal growth, in your consideration, in the galaxy? I recall many were said to come from Ilum."

With an incline of the head, Caen was curious about the answer. With so many Force Users throughout the galaxy, was it possible that a crystal shortage could occur? Or had the galaxy accounted for that increased need by increased germination via more developing natural sources?

Very curious.

Lightsaber Crystals And You
This whole talk was going far better than he expected, as his class seemed engaged and wanting to learn. Their questions were on point, and it was getting him to dig deeper into his reservoir of knowledge to sate it. He paced about the room, as several questions were fired towards him, and a new class member joined in the discussion. The smile remained on his face, as his eyes swept about the room, thrilled at what he had managed to achieve.
He formulated his answers in his head, the padawan feeling something strange as he stood with so many eyes upon him, though his attention was directed towards the new comer to the discussion for the moment. (Caen San Tekka) "I'll get to all your questions in time, but first, let me address yours. Don't worry, I'm not an actual professor, this is just for education." He smiled, turning to display an image of Ilum before the class. "As you said before, yes, some sites have far more crystals than others. Personally, Ilum is the most prolific for pure Kyber crystals, but worlds such as Dantooine hold a great amount of crystals that can be utilized for lightsabers. I suspect there are other worlds that could serve similar purposes as well, such as the entirety of the Adega system."
He turned to Hanaya Enzar Hanaya Enzar now, addressing her comment about if it was possible to trace back an origin, something he knew only a small bit about. "Well, that depends. Some crystals are brought over and grow on different worlds from their own, which dilutes their properties, but, yes it would be possible to track down the system it originated from, if one had information on what substances to look for when narrowing down the planet of origin."
Frankly, out of all the questions, that was the one he had thought the most about, but the follow up from Desbre Gensan Desbre Gensan was rather perplexing as well. Thankfully, he was a nerd, so he recalled the information.
"Ah, yes, so those gems that are utalized are indeed unique. Allow me to explain, as they are something of an exception to the bond." He switched the image again, a holo of a Kryat Dragon Pearl came into being. "As we know, the force flows through all living things. As such, there is a reservoir of force potential that can be garnered within a crystal or gem, so long as it can contain the energy within itself." He paused, clearing his throat before pressing on.
"This bond is unique, as the user creates their own bond, unique with themselves, though it does not make it any lesser than natural gems, however, if the gem is not able to contain the force energies it can be disastrous. Often destroying the saber, and potentially killing the user in the process. Think of it as making your own droid, rather than buying one from a merchant. You can make one just as well, but you need to know what you are doing to make it work."
He hoped that answer was satisfactory, though, he couldn't be entirely sure it wouldn't leave more questions than answers.
