The origins of the Krovos-class Star Destroyer lay in its predecessor, the Sith-Imperial Marr-class Star Destroyer. The Marr-class was designed, constructed, and fielded by the Tenth Sith Empire to serve as its mainline warship from 856 ABY until the Empire's dissolution in 867 ABY.

When the central authority of the Empire functionally ceased to exist, the Sith Armada was left without central leadership and direction. Segments of the Armada descended into warlordism as regional military commanders erected their own successor fiefdoms and consolidated power around them. Many of these warlords battled each other for authority and resources, bleeding themselves dry and destroying their own fleets in the process. The Armada would've cannibalized itself in this manner, had the Dark Lord of the Sith not intervened and summoned what remained of the Armada to him.

Darth Carnifex once again made the military leaders of the Sith Armada bend to his will, transforming them from Sith-Imperial officers into Kainate officers. Their fleets were incorporated into the Shadow Armada, amalgamated and reorganized along similar but functionally distinct hierarchal lines. Of all the warships inherited by the Kainate, the Marr-class became the most important.

However, the Marr in its current form was not meant to exist for much longer. Already, dozens and dozens of Marr-class Star Destroyers were decommissioned and moored in the dockyards of Malsheem. There, they underwent a transformation as they were dissected, picked apart, and reassembled into a new form; the Krovos-class Star Destroyer.

The Krovos was built in compliance with Kainate naval doctrine, hangar space reduced to the bare minimum while everything from armaments, defenses, and engines were improved with new technology. Weapon systems from Aurora Industries replaced the state-built turbolasers and ion cannons of the Marr, while the engine systems were redesigned with new specifications that outpaced what was possible with the predecessor. The newest in automation and crew-to-ship integration reduced crew requirements and increased efficiency, what crew was kept becoming finely attuned to the Krovos' systems.

The Krovos was also equipped with a Xandret Shield System, which projected an electromirror across the entirety of the star destroyer. This defensive shield deflected energy-based attacks back towards their point of origin or absorbed and stored them in banks of energy capacitors. The Xandret system did not work against kinetic forms of attack, such as mass drivers, and could be overwhelmed if enough fire was concentrated at a single point on the hull.

Besides the redesigned engines, the Krovos possessed a Jumpmaster 1.01 Microdrive, which not only allowed the warship to reach a 1.01 class lightspeed but also microjump short distances.
