Heir of the Lupine

Accidental Encounters & Mysterious Abilities

Where there was once a time when the Lupine race remained confined to their home world Figaro Favoura VII, Diego Van-Derveld grew bored of his small kingdom and sought to discover the galaxy. It would be on Nar Shaddaa that the Lupine would meet a rather beautiful woman, albeit drunk, in one of the many nightspots within the Refugee Sector. One brief encounter led to the conception of a child whom Diego wouldn’t stick around to meet. This was the beginning of a pattern that would shape the young Ket's life. Abandonment, resentment, anger, rage, and contempt. Unaware of his parental bloodline or his true heritage, the youth would soon be sold to a Hutt who ran a cage fighting ring, taking away from him even a remote possibility of a happy childhood. There, he would be the lowest of residents, a child slave - a mop boy. His job was simple – cleaning the blood and whatever other remains from the cage.

There was hardly anything for the boy to do other than work and watch the fights that went down night after night, waiting to fulfill his duty when all the events ended. So Ket watched the combatants intently, studying their movements, their actions. In watching them, he came to a realization; he could actually hear so much more than he’d originally thought, even through the crowds cheering like rabid dogs. He could hear the muscles tense even before a fighter threw a strike, and with more observation, he could tell just which muscles moved, leading him to know just which limb would strike out. He could not for his life explain it to himself, but with time, he began to predict the moves just moments before they occurred. It would of course be a long time before he would learn that it was his connection to the Force itself that allowed him this strange yet wonderful ability.

Child Fighter

When the final bell rang, and after he'd finished mopping up whatever bodily fluids and viscera had remained strewn across the ring, he often be left alone to finish up whatever tasks he may have had left before he would eventually go lay down on the thin, meager cot that was set up for him in the locker rooms. It was during these precious few hours he would practice the movements he'd seen, taking special care to keep himself away from prying eyes as he did. He took the time to truly understand how the rules worked, everything making more sense to him night after night. Soon, he began to improvise, creating some of his own moves, developing a technique that was uniquely his own. It was then, one fateful night, that one of the combatants had come back to pick up a bag of belongings he'd left behind. His name, inconsequential. It was the fact that he silently watched the youth practice on a heavy bag, seeing in the youth the potential to become great. Of course, everyone has a motive, and the ageing fighter had his own; to use the boy as a way to earn enough credits to retire and live a life of relative comfort. Of course, the greedy Hutt that owned the boy had agreed to the grizzled old fighter's idea when he presented it, and soon enough, Ket began his training in the martial arts. It wasn't long before he became stronger, more resilient, and more powerful. As the boy's skill grew, so to did his record within the cage. He'd come close to a few defeats, but never did he actually smell the foul stench of failure... Yet.

The First Metamorphosis

One late night, he awoke in a cold sweat with his heart seemingly trying to pound itself out of his chest, feeling like a caged animal in his own skin. Something deep within him called out, wanting to break out, to be free. It was then that the immense, searing pain began. At this point, he was barely into his teenage years, and Ket still didn’t have even the slightest idea as to what he really was. All alone within a dank basement deep within the bowels of the Hutt’s compound, he cried out, screaming from the very depths of his insides, suffering as every bone in his body began to break and reconfigure. Yet, as the minutes passed as though they were hours, the boy could only think he was literally about to die. Except when it passed, he wasn’t dead. He felt more alive than he’d ever been in his short existence thus far. It was at that very moment that a small piece of glass revealed to him something that would scar him for the rest of his life. The animal he’d felt buried inside him, it was quite literally staring back at him with bright sapphire eyes exactly like his very own. For a young boy, it truly was a massive shock to the system, something no one could have prepared him for. It was because of that fact, he slowly changed back to his humanoid form, staring at his own face once again and passing out onto the cold, hard concrete. When he awoke the next day, he nearly shot straight up on his dreary cot, and looked down at his hands, feeling his face frantically. It was a dream, it had to be. Or was it? He truly didn't have a clue.

The Fight of a Lifetime & Escape to Tatooine

Now, at the tender age of just fourteen years old, Ket was exhausted of this meager existence he led, but he also felt that now he was powerful enough to plot an escape from it. The timing of this realization was perfect, perhaps serendipity, or perhaps the will of the Force. We will never truly know, but his Hutt master had organized a grand tournament, where underground fighters could come and wager their credits, even their very lives, for glory and for eternal fame. That little flicker of hope within the youth sparked right then and there, slowly burning brighter with every day as he trained tirelessly for this "Nar Shaddian Tournament of the Ages". Soon enough, the day of the tournament's start had come, and he entered the cage as he always did; confident. It was that brash grin and supreme confidence in his abilities that brought him yet another victory. And later in the day, a second, followed by a third that night.

The next day, in the semi-finals, he matched up against a mandolorian, and truth be told, it was the closest he'd ever come thus far to losing a battle. Yet somehow, he managed to squeak out a victory, somehow knocking the mandolorian out cold. Taking a bit of a break, his weathered and hard-lived trainer began to speak to him something about credits, and how they would split the winnings, and other such nonsense. Ket did not care in the least about any of this. He was focused on one thing, and one thing alone: Freedom. He would have it, no matter the cost. And that night, in the final fight, the cost was truly high indeed. As he fought with skill and determination, his opponent managed to crack a couple of his ribs, and soon enough, his breathing began to become shallow and quick. The pain radiated throughout his entire body, and he began to have trouble merely keeping up with the man across the cage from him, barely parrying blows in time.

This was the moment where the seed of the Dark Path would be planted, deep within the core of his very soul to pulse and grow slowly. As if possessed by some otherworldly spirit, as the man came with a hard overhand right hook, Ket ducked underneath it, and struck him right on the apex of the jaw, knocking him almost unconscious. His opponent stumbled back, grabbing at his head and trying to shake it off, but the young Ket would have none of it. He closed the gap, and grabbed the man by the throat, pounding his free fist into his temple not once but twice. As he stood there, propped up by Ket's ever tightening grip, the boy let out a wicked howl. It was deep, it was guttural, and it was not quite human. And as he did, Ket yanked backward, tearing the man's throat clear out of his neck, his larynx dangling from Ket's outstretched hand. The crowd was stunned, almost dead silence as eyes became wide, and mouths hung agape like fish out of water. The man's lifeless body fell to it's knees, and then to the ground, blood flowing from the massive wound like a mighty river carving out a canyon. Ket tossed the remains within his grasp aside, and slowly made his way to the cage door. As he reached for the handle, the crowd gathered exploded with raucous and wild cheering, the sound almost deafening. A bloodthirsty lot, to be sure. Even his Hutt master was smiling and laughing, clapping it's fat little arms together in approval.

The Hutt laughed wholeheartedly, asking the boy what he wanted as a prize for winning. Credits? Women? Yet, as if the boy had made a joke, the Hutt laughed even harder when Ket muttered one single word; Freedom. He failed to understand Ket wasn’t joking. The larger mistake the Hutt made, however, that one of his most valued fighters had a type of freedom all around the compound at this point and was feared by most everyone, save a handful. So as the Hutt laughed, Ket moved too quickly for him to take notice, exposing a long handmade shank hidden within his boot. The Hutt stopped laughing indeed, but only because the blade cut into him deeply, ripping further through the thick skin and fat. Leaving the shank buried in the Hutt’s approximation of a neck, the teenager seemingly melted into the crowd, stealing a jacket that was all too long on him, and simply vanished into the cityscape proper. From there, the animal within spoke to him, quietly at first, guiding him. He'd remembered he once heard something to the effect of “Those like him were par for the course out in Mos Espa, you know. Animalistic, and brutally violent.” So after a little bit of maneuvering and some slight-of-hand to procure the needed funds, he found himself on a transport ship headed out to Tatooine.

Journey of a Jedi Padawan

Training with the Jedi Master

On the desert planet, instead of finding the one he’d been searching for, Ket met Stone, a Jedi who saw in him what many missed – his Force Sensitivity. The wise old man immediately offered to train him and teach him of the Jedi. Aware of abilities he’d long kept to himself, Ket accepted the offer and became the man’s Padawan. It was a long and hard experience for him, though Ket did not lack the capability for hard work or long hours, this turned out to be quite different than what he’d expected. Stone claimed he’d teach him to become a real Jedi, even though Ket didn’t know what it actually meant, having not known one before him. Training, focus, the rules… it seemed to never end.

Vega Van-Derveld

His fighting days were hard from over and Ket tended to get in trouble even on Tatooine. One such time, at the age of sixteen, he ran into youth not much older than himself. As tall as he was, with the same blonde hair and sapphire blue eyes, and spoke with the same tinge of animalistic fury. Impressed with how the older boy handled himself, Ket struck up a conversation with him for reasons he quite didn’t understand. Something felt familiar about him. The beast inside seemed, calmer around him. The man turned out to be Vega Van-Derveld, who unlike him, took more notice to these connections and on a hunch, asked if he could test his blood. Hesitant, he agreed, and through a small device, Vega discovered a 98% match. The older Van-Derveld quickly understood what it meant.

That was the night when Ket learned he was the son of Diego Van-Derveld, the brother of the man sitting opposite from him and most importantly, a Lupine. Vega took the time to explain just what a Lupine was, allowing the younger teenager to understand what it was that he felt inside, and that the transformation he’d gone through was no dream It was also the night when he changed willingly for the first time, fully aware of what he would become and the two brothers ran together through the desert. Together, united, as a family – something Ket had missed out on for so long.

The Sith and The Lupine

Forsaking the Jedi ways

Ket returned to his master, his mind showing the cracks he would become so well known for. Stone noticed something changing in his very soul as well and confronted him on the matter. It wasn’t long before a simple discussion became a heated argument and Ket proclaimed he was leaving. The Planet. The Jedi, Stone himself. He just walked away, leaving the path of light behind.

Behold the Dark Lord of the Sith

Through his newly discovered brother, Ket discovered what came on the other side of the spectrum – the Sith, and he joined them willingly. Perhaps it was teenage angst, perhaps it was the voices that became so much more loud with each and every day. No one really knew for sure, but it was then that he came under the eye of a Sith Lord by the name of Ogre Mal Pannis. Learning quickly and showing just how strong his potential truly was, down the line, he would meet yet another legendary name, Rama Sha. Rama had been in his heyday the end all be all when it came to Sith. Within their ranks, there were few, if any, who could top the legendary Rama Sha. Throughout his time with the Sith, Ket grew closer to his older brother Vega and learned further of the Lupine, as well as Figaro Favoura VII which he would soon travel to. But in the Sith, Ket became known as a pure torrent of rage. He could not even find sparring partners as he utterly destroyed anyone put forth in front of him. Such was the power within one so young. Of course, there were those much more skilled than he, but that never stopped him from trying.

Eventually, the years of training, the suffering, and perseverance led Ket to become first a Sith Knight and ultimately a Sith Master, respected and feared by those around him. There was another aspect of being a Lupine that would eventually fall into place, rumors building around the man of much power. It started simple. The impulsive madman, the lunatic… in truth, it was much more complex that anyone could ever begin to imagine. You see, Ket Van-Derveld is a pure blooded Lupine, something that befell all offspring of even one Lupine parent. Such were their genetics. A Lupine could mate with a Twi’Lek, and end up looking perfectly human with not one ounce of Twi’Lek heritage. Part of the curse of their wretched blood. And as many Lupines before him, Ket was enveloped in the madness that plagued the minds of those before him. It had been a long time coming, his mind cracking in the years behind him, but bit by bit, unnoticed for so long until it finally matured and made him the man he was. Inside his mind, many voices speak. Not all at the same time, and never did they all agree upon a single course of action, but they are always there. A whisper, a shout, it mattered not. To know Ket Van-Derveld was to know the deep-seeded madness within him. The psychotic madman whom you know so well had truly begun to surface. The voices were many, the face remained the same, yet it was all one glorious disaster that somehow retained perfect harmony.

In his voyages as a Sith, Ket had done many things to bring forth the reputation he’s held for many years. One such event was the murder of the young Jedi Master, Adrianna Fiore. The last name was well known at the time, the Y’Sadian winged family, the royalty into which Adrianna Ultron married into. Though powerful in the Force as well, when the two battled, Ket took her head, removing flesh from bone to keep her skull as trophy. She was, however, just one of his many kills… eventually this would lead to the creation of a mysterious and powerful artifact; The Throne of Flesh and Bone, a throne of immense dark energy where Ket would preside as the Lord of the Ancient Sith Order. Other powerful Sith, such as Athena Somir, Neav Revata, Jade GlassWalker, even Ket’s estranged brother Cat Van-Derveld...all would bend the knee to him.

The Culling

Once, there were many more Lupines among the other aliens of the galaxy. Once. Then, Vega went on what would be known in their history as the Culling, the annihilation of the race. When it ended, only a small number of the species remained – as far as Ket knows, the Lupine race now consisted of Vega and himself, and possibly Cat, though he too vanished in time. But Vega vanished as well, leaving him all alone once again. In this event, the true Lord Van-Derveld emerged, and once more, Ket found himself as the one who called the shots.

A Jedi walks into a bar…

One random night, Ket walked into a bar on Coruscant. Drinking to himself, he soon spotted a young redhead dancing. A Jedi at the time, the Dathomiri female quickly became drawn to the handsome Sith, whose games on her mind draw her attention even more. Before the night ended, Ket murdered every living thing in that bar so the two could be alone and claimed her as his own. She was his chosen, his equal, one whom he felt lust, love, and utter devotion. He knew not why, but he knew that to forsake it would be the greatest mistake of his life. This was possibly the second time in known history that a Dark Lord of the Sith showed weakness. But such weakness was only such to those who knew not why.

The next time they met, at the Moonlight Ball, the man would propose she leave the Jedi ways and join the Sith appeared once more.. Curupira D’Arr Hawk, already not a typical Jedi Knight, accepted almost all too easily. Except, she offered a counter-proposal – she would claim him first. With her brother Ahote and her sister’s dearest friend Ryori Holloway there, the two served as witnesses to the traditional Dathomirian ceremony. Not quite the typical Dathomiri either, the two did things differently than Witches did, the two altered the second half of the claiming (a witch’s official ceremony in which following the witnessed ceremony, the Witch scratches the males’ back to show property), the two performed the act on each other, leaving Ruu with her own set of scars.

The Lost Path

Who am I, truly?

After being a Sith for so long, The voices in his head grew restless. Two distinct voices emerged, one of his hate and anger, the other of his empathy and compassion. The rest were drowned out, as these voices battled for control of the vessel, control of the man. Somehow, and not even Ket himself truly knows why, the voice of the Light triumphed against all odds. He found himself in deep regret, depression, and self-loathing. For all he had accomplished, he’d never helped anyone. Never done the right thing. Some say it was his connection to his mate that triggered such things within him, but we may never really know. In this respect, Ket brought himself before the Jedi, and allowed himself to be tried by their Grand Conclave.

Don’t Want to change the World…

Finding a new path wasn’t all that easy, as age crept up like a stalker in the night.. This led him to many voyages away from the crowds of people. When he returned from one such trip, he arrived to Nar Shaddaa. It wasn’t long before he sensed his mate’s presence there, and gone after her. She was however on another trail, believing it was him. Coming close enough to the one Curupira was chasing, Ket was hit with a vision, seeing and feeling what the creature in front of them both saw and felt. He caught up quickly then with the girl, catching her. Though she fought him and wished to break free, he refused. Her one gold and one sapphire blue eye intrigued them both, and Ket let her blood speak to him, realizing quickly he was facing none other than his own first born, a daughter from a time he’d yet to see. Chloe Van-Derveld, his flesh and blood from beyond their time.

The knowledge of a daughter they had not yet had, Ket searched through the Force until he discovered the future held not one daughter but two for them. Both Lupine, but unique in their own ways. Though he had yet to meet the other…

High Lord Inquisitor of the Templar Order

The Mandolorian known as Isley Verd crossed his path one day, speaking to him of the Confederation of Independent Systems, inviting him to join them. Ket took the chance and joined their Templar Order, though a part of him had loyalty to the Sith ways he once stuck to. His knowledge, experience and power allowed him to progress rapidly through positions, and soon enough, the man was named the High Lord Inquisitor, and soon after, Viceroy of Ryloth. Despite its potential, the Confederacy however did not know a long life and eventually, the Master of the Force fell into the shadows once more until emerging back into the galaxy, discovering that his allegiance was no longer in the light or dark, but to himself.

Present Day

Kill The King, The King is Dead, Long Live The King

Now, we find Ket roaming wild space, his future uncertain. No one quite knows what happened to him after he left Ryloth, but one thing is for certain. Ket Van-Derveld is a man of many faces, and fewer answers. What he may do next, not even he knows for sure. But one question plagued him his entire life; Was it possible to truly quell the voices inside his head?

Was sanity an attainable, tangible thing, something he could actually taste and touch? Or was he doomed for the rest of time to always be the precipice of falling into even deeper mental shadows?
