A pair of firm footsteps echoed through the sparsely populated warehouse. For a moment they clicked and clacked, and then they stopped. Something shuffled and then the clicking and the clacking continued again.

Inventory was part of Colette's preferred means of meditation. The routine kept her grounded in reality while it also kept her brain working in a way that she'd almost forgotten about until she had been appointed. Loose concepts of morality and mortality were all well and good, but it didn't quite compare to the hard facts of the real world. She left it for others to ponder those issues while she kept the lights on so that they had nothing else to worry about.

The pad in her hands was essentially her own ledger of just about everything that the Order had in their possession, save for the Shadow-related inventory. It had already helped her catch a few Padawans in the act of sneaking sweets to their bunks, but that was harmless compared to the true damages she used it to safeguard against.

Eventually she came upon an unopened box of plasma cartridges. Colette ran a quick scan of her ledger and sure enough they were there. Except,

"Weird." She grumbled and pulled the box closer. "They were supposed to be charged."

Oh well, she thought and carefully pulled the box into her arms. It must have slipped between some fingers. Given that they were Jedi it didn't matter much. It would make for an awkward situation when a teacher would have a need for a training probe.

It would take no time at all to remedy and there was a loading station right around the corner. Colette sighed and carefully huffed it on over. The box thudded against the station's metallic top. She pulled out a packaging knife, sliced the box open, and then grabbed the first magazine.

The hiss of the energy cell's induction port opening up to accept the first payload of sweltering hot plasma was unmistakable. There were only about nine more after this one. Luckily Colette had nothing but time for the remainder of the afternoon.

Not far from the warehouse was the armory, which housed a weapons range, it was to capacity, with soldiers training and testing their weapons. This was not the larger, primary ranges for Strategic Command, but it was large enough for a squad to get some training reps in. Squads like Omega Squad, who were in the middle of going through their weapon kits. The tables were lined with disassembled weapons and parts with either operators (like Raphael and Gabriel currently working on theirs) or others shooting targets.

There is also a representative from Guardian Authority Lt. (GAL) who was appointed to protect the interests of the merchandise and needs of the team. He was also keeping records of any Republic powercells, or items being used in order for reimbursement.

Michael was busy overseeing the processes and efficiency.

Connel was at the far end, he was busy going through each of his own weapons.

Not all of this gear was in use when he when in "Ariel" Shadow Gear out in the field, some was for when he was acting a “Temple Guard” (or at least if he made it through Zark San Tekka Zark San Tekka ‘s program), and of course the lightsaber he carried when out and about freely. He was in his gear right now and his mask was on the table beside the weapons and going through each of those laid before him. Unlike the Omega’s gear, his were not necessary to inspect every week, but he did anyway.

Meditation continued. The cartridge topped up with a slight whine and Colette decoupled it from the charger. She let it skid across the metallic surface of her workstation and find its place off to the side. The charger closed and with it she glanced over at the station next door.

"Oh, Connel." She said in surprise, the man had passed her by entirely. "Sorry, I was in my head for a while."

Her eyes set on the equipment he was working on with a curious glance. Weapons and armor, things that she knew had seen more than most. While she wasn't familiar with the stock, she recognized the importance they held.

"Interesting handgun," she remarked and squinted at it. "Not sure I've seen it's make before."

"Use it often?"

Putting on the mask
You will feel no remorse for those who would show none to you.
You will feel no fear beyond the fear of failing those behind you.
You will seek no reward beyond mission success.
You will feel no pain until death.
You are not wrath.
You are not vengeance.
You are the Light’s wraith.

This one? He asked, hand on the Lightcarbine. Not often. Only when the mission demands it. The weapon is rather excessive.

Points to the weapon in his hand. All the time, it is a standard blaster frame but built in the manner of a Lightsaber. He politely told the story about his failure on Vendaxa, being basically bifurcated by a Sith Lord and ended up spending the better part of 10 months to a year in a medbay and Bacta Tank specifically. Only to come out just after the failed invasion of Coruscant by Darth Solipsis (previously).

I came out of the tank a different person,,, physically and mentally. I was afraid of picking up a lightsaber, let alone wielding one. So this is the closest thing other than the shield that was built for me. I stopped using the shield over time, but this has stayed strapped to my leg ever since. He then blasted a target several times with the same force as a lightsaber piercing it.

Apologies for not signing out the powercells and ammunition. I will make sure there is reimbursement for them. He never had an issue with Colette, she was adopted by the Nobles, and while there were some who had issue with them, Connel never did, it was Valery herself who pulled him out of the downward spiral he was in after his injuries and gave him direction.

Despite the time spent in the same Order, both now and the NJO there was very little Colette actually knew about Connel. She knew he had a legendary parent, and she knew that he was a warrior by his own merit. The man had his own road and he walked it. She respected that.

"Way I figure is you're doing the Order a solid by putting it to use." Colette shrugged and grabbed her next magazine and hooked it up to the plasma feeder. "Hoarded resources serve no purpose, and I trust you won't misuse it given that incident on Froswythe."

Connel and Andromeda had been a good thing on what was a dark day for many. If he had wished to show such colors it would have been more advantageous to do it when Colette wasn't around, and even more so to avoid bringing it up today.

"I think I understand what you mean though." Colette frowned and looked at the charging cartridge. "When I nearly died on Woostri it was almost surreal to come back to life."

"I wasn't even scared or angry, just confused to wake up weaker, and more fragile than I was a second ago." The plasma feeder began to hiss and Colette took the magazine from it and put it next to the first one. "Sometimes it feels like some part of me did die there, but I just haven't found out which part it was."

The kid raised her hand for a moment with a frustrated sigh.

"But, that's not what you came here to listen to." She groaned. "What are you up to, Connel? What are you stocking up for?"

Though he did listen to her intently, Connel was still focused on going through and inspecting his weapons in earnest, it’s just who he was. Even in this calmer state with the mask off, he was never one for idle chatter, a regret in many instances, but not here. This was more than necessary. His gear, like the Force, was his lifeline, and that would never break, not if he could help it, he had someone to come back to. That someone was the reason he had to be ready, for them, for Omega Squad, for the mission.

When she asked him what he was, what they were “stocking up for”... he sat back, quiet, contemplative for a moment. She was a Council Member, but he was not a complete member of the Republic or the Jedi Order. That does not mean he would disrespect her, she was a Jedi, a good person, and they were on the same side. But he did not have to tell her everything if he did not want to.

He wanted to.

For Coruscant… Taking a breath as if a weight had been pulled from his shoulders, he explained.

In a ridiculously short amount of time they went from being the center of the Galactic Alliance, secure, prosperous and happy, to in less than an hour, a besieged warzone. Imperial aircraft launched the largest aerial battle in years, maybe decades to mask the ground battle. Liberty, that word should have new meaning for all of us today, every day since, even Jedi.

We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We have to be united in our common interest. Perhaps it's fate that we were pushed into this, that we withdrew, still fighting for our liberty. Not from tyranny, oppression or persecution, but from annihilation.

I’m done running, I’m going to live, to exist, so that others less fortunate can, and if the Sith try to take that away, well they can try. For a long time, I shouldered the burden of having watched my father die and withdrawing. I believed he died for nothing, but he didn’t. He died so we could be here. As a result, we could come together. Thus, we could declare together that we will not sleep peacefully. The fight will not end without us. Our lives will continue.

Putting his Lightblaster down and going through his oldest lightsaber “Alpha” and ignited it as if declaring something. For a long time, I shouldered a burden, I realized that was never the burden I was meant to carry for long, it was going to be the bomb we drop on the Sith. Imperials, Mandalorians, anyone who stands against the liberties, the freedoms, the very basic rights of sentients. My father gave that to us, I won’t let anyone take it away… and neither will they…

Looking up at Omega Squad, and then Colette. That’s what we’re stocking up for.

Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

Her brow instantly rose to question the response. Coruscant was not on the Jedi Order's radar yet, meaning Connel was working based on someone else's intel and/or orders. There were a few people that she could think of, but none that immediately struck her as the would-be aggressors.

It must have been a long-term goal then. Colette couldn't say she shared it much, but she understood the sentiment. Coruscant was the self-proclaimed heart of the universe. Tython was the alleged heart of the Jedi. Externally it made sense that people wanted them back.

Except much like any place with a storied past, reality was often coated in rose-tinted shades of nostalgia. The truth was that a lot of the people on Coruscant could have vastly improved lives if they were helped off-world, and Tython would remain what it was regardless of whether the Jedi took care of it or not.

Colette rubbed her thumb against her wrist.

"Sounds like you're still shouldering a lot." She said, not turning to look at Connel. The cartridge found the feeder and the chemical hissing continued. "Just make sure you remember that you won't succeed without a lot more people and a lot more guns than you have right now."

"In the end, we can lead people to freedom but we can't make them say thank you, or please. Not saying this to rain on your parade. Just saying that you should make sure that the ones you fight for actually want your help. Nobody wants to be a slave, but some are blind to the alternatives."

The more things change…

Connel just inwardly grinned at her words. Colette had heard what she had to say, but it was obvious that she was not entirely aware of the meaning behind his words. She had taken in that he was looking to retake the core, he and Omega Squad. Sure, maybe a few years from now with a fleet and an army at his back, but that was foolish to think so now. Not foolish on her part though, after all they had a reputation for taking on ridiculous assignments.

Not what I was saying.. He said plainly looking up at her as he began putting his rifle back together blindly. The Empire attacked out of nowhere. We had no idea they were even in the system until they were all but on top of us. He rubbed his stubble.

Naboo has a huge border with Sith Order space. They’ve already pulled a few incursions, and with Mandalorians running around, more Sith, pirates, more Imperials… the point is… The High Republic is being gunned for. Only this time there is warning time.

Moving on to his next task, Connel began disassembling his shortsabers. I’m not as heartless or cold as people tend think I am.

... the more they stay the same.

Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

Not what I was saying.

Colette tilted her head in confusion. Her gaze fell upon Connel only to divert and close once she realized that she had misinterpreted what he was saying. An awkward chuckle parted her lips into a self-deprecated grin.

I'm not as heartless or cold as people tend to think I am.

"Neither am I, really." She admitted and continued her work. "I just enjoy focusing on my tasks and giving them the dedication they deserve, you know?"

"To protect others and help those who want to be helped. To be a pillar of support for anyone willing to take that chance on me. My life is a duty to the people, and I'm happy with that. It gives me purpose. Even if all I do is to make sure they have food on their plates and clean bed sheets, it's still an incredibly important job and I want to do it right."

”Neither am I, really.”

When she went to basically defend herself, Connel waved a hand at her. He was busy putting his lightsaber “Day” back together when she was explaining her position and why she felt the same way. I never thought you were, and I can understand your position.

He thought about her dedication to her work. It’s funny today how many people take to this life like it’s just a job. He rubbed the bridge of his nose.

I mean, while this doesn’t define you, you’re dedicated to your work. While it may not be the most glamorous, that’s not what we are and it’s more than necessary.

Finally taking a free moment to glance up to her. I’ve always respected you for that.

Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

A weak smile spread across her lips at the compliment.

"Thanks." She let her eyes set on Connel for a moment before she plugged in another cartridge and had to focus on that. "I respect you for your willingness to speak your truth and stick to it. Like at that meaningless conclave a while back."

"Luckily, I don't think we'll need one for a while longer. The path forward is pretty clear already."

Colette frowned.

"And it isn't pretty. Just a matter of time before the galaxy devolves into all out war again. I intend to have the Order ready and prepared for that. Mandalorian, Sith, even the Republic."

Not only was she appreciative of his honest observation of her, but she was speaking of a past… “gathering”. Flourishing the other of his two shortsabers “Night”, Connel nodded. I appreciate that. My father believed in being able to look in the mirror over all else. He instilled that in me.

He thought about her mention of the Conclave.Yeah, the Conclave. It wasn’t a bad idea in theory, just poor in execution. Between impetuous impatience by many on one side, and status quo keeping, masked as “arrogance” on another, it became an argument and not a true Conclave. He pondered her frown and her next words carefully.

Ultimately, as long as Jedi remember what and who they are and not what and who they are expected to be then everything will fall in place as it is supposed to. Taking the shortsaber apart to inspect it, he pontificated on the thought. Coruscant fell to the Empire because of complacency, yes, but in a manner of speaking, we were overextending as well. Too many attempts at too many different undertakings.

He shrugged, having not truly thought about it without the lens of history before, but what he experienced. He also considered what she was saying about the galaxy potentially falling to outright war again. As much as I would like to look for a farm somewhere and truly settle down, you make a great point. I learned from my time with Omega Squad… he “Michael”, what’s the actual wording?

“sic vis pacem para bellum” If you want peace, prepare for war. It’s Caridan.

That’s it. Train to fight in hopes you never have to do so. It’s one of the reasons the name “Omega Squad” dates all the way back to the Clone Wars. Pulling out a small envelope from a pocket on his belt, he handed it to her.

It would be an honor if you are able to show. Good to have some “Nobles” there. It not Valery Noble Valery Noble and Kahlil Noble Kahlil Noble as well. He offered a rare smile.

Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

Sick wish pack'em into what? Colette raised a brow and then quickly lowered it once the Caridan was translated for her.

"Wise words." She agreed with the man. Colette was about to add 'wisdom' of her own before she was handed something. She folded it open and quickly glanced up at Connel with a wide smile.

"Of course I will. Congratulations, Connel!" She pulled forth her satchel and packed the paper into it. "I'll be sure to reach out to Valery and Kahlil, though I can't promise they are available."

Colette let the moment pass for a moment. The hissing from the cartridge feeder demanded her attention and she quickly replaced the current one with another and turned it back on again.

"In my clan we used to have a similar saying to your Caridan." She said and took a seat on her workstation for greater comfort. "If you're not capable of violence you aren't peaceful, you're harmless."

"I like to think about that one when I meditate. I might not be a big fighter like Valery is, but that doesn't mean I'm incapable."

The moment she reacted to what “Michael” of Omega Squad had said, Connel thought of his father Caltin. When he was young, his father taught him not to LOOK for a fight but to be ready for one. He spent a year working on his reflexes alone.

Connel was appreciative of that training right now.

As she reacted to the Caridan proverb, Connel was able to fake his laugh into a snort and cough. Of course anyone paying attention would know he was laughing but still. Caltin believed that the Force was “A gigantic pain in the ass, but it has its moments.” This was one of those times Connel could appreciate his father’s wisdom.

Still buttoning his lip, he smiled again, feeling diabetic with all of the sweetness in the room. This time though, he was more than fine with it.

Yeah, thank you. It’s been a long time coming. She is supportive and is really grounding. There were not very many times Connel allowed himself to be vulnerable and happy, this was clearly one of those times, and he was more than happy with that.

When Colette spoke of her parable, Connel nodded appreciatively. I like that. It’s not the size of the Aak-Dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the Aak-Dog. Or like the lightsaber forms. No form is truly better than others. Even Shii-Cho is dangerous. It’s all about how you use it. It’s why I laugh when I hear “Jedi Weakness”... Good people are often the most dangerous, but the most disciplined as well.

Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

"Yeah." Colette nodded along to what Connel was saying. "I might not have the scars to show any 'victories' when it comes to my bladework. But give me a shooting range and I will take shots that are far better than the average grunt."

"Back home we never had lightsabers, or swords really. We had spears, and ammunition was rare enough that we needed to conserve the stocks we had."

"I learned to find comfort in that scarcity, and it's something I think a lot of people could learn from out here." She let her gaze fall to the floor in a moment of vulnerability. It was her attempt to match the one Connel had offered before. "People are too comfortable, or too unwilling to be uncomfortable. I once said I enjoyed the struggle of survival, but I think what I enjoyed was the honesty that having to rely on others bring out."

"It's one of the things I miss from home."

I get that. Pulls Lightblaster and offers it. Take it. Take a shot.

When Colette offered a hint of vulnerability, Connel offered reassurance and took solace that he wasn’t just nuts, that others could understand. Wise words. I think that is what is missing today. People are too quick to run into a fight that sometimes they fail to find the “why” in it. Makes me miss the days when I was a kid growing up on Alderaan. My mom and dad… they just let me look to the stars and think how cool they were. I miss that… people are so interested in fighting and what is going on… they’re going to lose themselves in the worst way.

Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

The blaster had a strange feeling in her hands. Heavy, but not unpleasantly so, most likely tuned to match Connel like a glove. Of course, the first time with any weapon was bound to feel peculiar. To Colette that weight was it. Something about it felt off and she couldn't quite figure out why.

She raised it with a cautious point at a nearby wall. She drew her bead and placed her finger on the trigger to pull.

The kick of recoil was always exhilarating. The quartermaster shook herself from her state and let out a chuckle and an exhale.

"Woah." She remarked approvingly and put the gun down. "That… Was great."

"I think you're right." Colette's grin faded as she looked back at Connel and the topic at hand. "I lost myself in a fight once and it was intoxicating. It was my first fight, but the feeling was hard to explain. Like a million ants in your head itched at a part of your brain you didn't know you had in you."

"The desire to win, to see the life fade from your enemy no matter the cost. That's what I fear for our young ones if the war ever turns hot."

Smiles genuinely as she takes a shot or two, realizing it isn’t an ordinary blaster. Right? It’s useful in other ways too. I can light up a dark path, Holsters the Lightblaster. Change out the crystals and use it to break locks, I normally have it set to my genetic signature but… well...

When Colette was explaining her fears, he nodded understandingly.. Indeed, my mother was a Sith Lord once… she gave it all up freely because of my father. He smiled at the thought of his parents as he had done many times before but for a different reason now, for Lira. When I saw him fall on Coruscant, I was … well I was devastated to say the least. She saw this and she stayed by my side in my worst days. Knowing that I would never be the same, potentially falling down that hole and never coming out. She imbued that mask with a ritual that compartmentalized my emotions… I knew where I was going and couldn’t stop myself. She did it to protect me from myself. Took emotions out of the equation for me until I could.

He took the mask in hand and looked at it. It’s not for everyone, but if there was some way this could help others. I would give it to them. He shrugged. I have a bad feeling it’s going to come to that soon.

Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor

"Like a lethal flare gun." Colette whispered in awe for a moment as Connel took his gun back. "Very convenient."

As Connel told her about seeing Caltin go she couldn't help but frown in sympathy for his experience more than for who it was. In truth she already knew that the feeling wouldn't have been mutual if she was in his shoes, at least not if it were her biological dad.

But then, she didn't even know what he looked like. For all she knew, he was long dead already. It was a moot point.

"As long as you make sure to actually process the emotions too." Colette warned Connel. "Sometimes a good cry is one of the most liberating feelings in the world."

Maybe. He said, smirking at her observation. It’s great in a pinch.

When Colette was offering her position, he bulked up. Manly man, no cry. He smirked. All kidding aside, I have processed more emotions than most people have. That’s partially why I still use the mask at times. It actually frees me to later.

He shrugged. It’s not a perfect method, but it works.
