SPECIAL FEATURES

Strengths:

 • Compact and discreet while possessing even more functionality than a standard full-sized protocol droid.
Weaknesses:

 • Immobile.

 • As with most consumer grade electronics, it is fragile and is highly susceptible to being temporarily disabled by EMPs and ions.
DESCRIPTION

The Babel is a miniature protocol droid designed to be worn on the ear, specially created with the blind and visually impaired in mind. The droid was personally designed by Jyoti Nooran after interacting blind members of the Silver Order who refused ocular implants or surgery to correct their vision. She then created the Babel as a non-invasive alternative to help improve their situational awareness.

Powered by a memristor-based neural network, the Babel is capable of carrying out traditional protocol tasks like real-time translation and ensuring the proper observance of etiquette and comes among the many races of the galaxy. Additionally, Babel units can interpret body languages, expressions (including microexpressions), and even pheromones/body odor. For this reason, the Babel is also useful for diplomats and business types for reading people.

In everyday life, the Babel can observe most forms of visual media like books, video, holonet pages, etc. As it can interpret such media for its user in real time, specially prepared media (e.g. Braille, captions) is unnecessary. With both its photoreceptors and ocular sensors, it can identify objects with great detail like articles of clothing or ingredients.

All this information is directly transmitted to the user via a bone conduction by oscillators, meaning that only the user can hear it. Because of the method of transmission, the Babel is useful as a hearing aid for the hearing impaired. However, it does possess an omnidirectional speaker for translating out loud to others. The voices the Babel unit can be changed with custom voice packs with either feminine or masculine programming.

While possessing its own sensor array, hair and other appendages can obscure the photoreceptors, so each Babel kit comes with an optional pair of contact cameras.
