SPECIAL FEATURES
STRENGTHS
  • Versatility - A hybrid ion/maser/particle/incendiary scattercannon, the FAE/SW-09 can be switched on the fly from one firing module to the other. A pilot or gunner might drain a target’s shields with the ionized mode, before finishing it off with particle beams. Another tactic, especially with multiple cannons, is to set each of them to different modules. A clever user might set one cannon to the ionized module and another to the particle beam module, resulting in a combined plasma-ionic effect that might be difficult to defend against.
  • Underwater Weapon - The FAE/SW-09 is capable of firing and operating underwater.
  • Surprise Boom - The FAE/SW-09 makes an excellent anti-fighter close-in defense weapon not only due to its small size and lightweight construction, but also because of its fast-tracking capabilities. The scattercannon can give hostile fighters that are “skimming” along the surface of a capital ship in order to evade more conventional point-defense weapons quite a nasty surprise. However, it should be noted that the FAE/SW-09’s range makes it a poor option for use against incoming missiles.
  • High Power - The FAE/SW-09 is a hard-hitting, powerful weapon, its power quotient sitting close to the limit of what a cannon of its size and class can support. At close ranges when deployed against small craft and vehicles it has moderate overkill potential, though that is not to say that such targets would ever be unable to withstand a direct blast.
WEAKNESSES
  • Surged - EMP and Ion discharges with a large enough power quotient and a close enough proximity can overload the FAE/SW-09’s system, rendering it unable to fire for some time, especially if the host vehicle lacks adequate EMP/Ion defenses.
  • Shotgun - While it almost goes without saying, the FAE/SW-09 is for all intents and purposes a light vehicle-grade energy shotgun cannon. As such, it is a close range weapon. Pilots and gunners are compelled to close with a target in order to get the most out of it. Unfortunately, such tactics can often leave them exposed to incoming fire.
  • Chain Reaction - In the event that the weapon sustains damage to the power systems or the Ethaerium gas cell, a fantastic explosion will likely ensue that has a very high chance of outright crippling the host vehicle. While the FAE/SW-09 has safety systems that work to prevent total annihilation from such an event, in the heat of battle, even these measures can fail.
  • Heat Management - In the heat of battle, the FAE/SW-09 needs to be kept cool. As such, a failure of its cooling systems will put the weapon out of commission for quite some time, in order to avoid catastrophic overheating.
  • Crew-Served - When utilized as a "heavy", crew-served weapon, it can take time for the SW-09 to be prepared for firing. If the HAPU unit is "cold" it can take up to fifteen minutes for the weapon to be ready to fire, though this represents the highest extreme. Nevertheless, for most infantry, this is not a mobile weapon, being more akin to an E-Web or a megablaster. It is only “light” by the standards of its class. However, some superheavy powersuits might be able to operate it as a main armament, albeit at reduced efficiency.
DESCRIPTION
The first iteration of First United Astral Engineering’s vehicle/fighter-grade scattercannon project, the FAE/SW-09 Hybrid Scattercannon is a proof of concept design intended to be mounted on scout craft, light repulsor vehicles, and fighters as a primary or secondary armament. On larger host platforms like capital ships or superheavy walkers, the FAE/SW-09 is often used as a tertiary armament or a point-defense weapon. On light vehicles, the FAE/SW-09 excels as an anti-infantry weapon and can be devastating to enemy vehicles at close ranges.

All in all, the FAE/SW-09 is intended to take a common infantry weapon and upscale it for use as a vehicular armament which is effective both in space and on the ground. While the designers are under no delusions of this being a ‘next-generation’ weapon, the FAE/SW-09 is hoped to present an unexpected, yet potentially deadly gimmick in dogfights and vehicular combat, giving any host unit it is installed on a small edge over their enemies.
