Designed and constructed in the years following the consolidation of the High Republic and Core Alliance into the Galactic Alliance, the Damocles-Class Star Defender was built from the bones of old enemies. As the Alliance looked to Republic Engineering and extreme automation for their new fleet of warships, industrial powerhouses of the Core like Kuat, Humbarine, and Corellia quickly fell to the wayside. To keep the shipyards going and anticipating a future need for cutting-edge battlecruisers to combat the behemoths of the Sith, CIS, and New Imperial Order, the Corellian Defense Force commissioned several new vessels of a new class of star defender. After years of development in secret, simultaneous construction of the first vessels of the new line began at various shipyards throughout the Confederation. The result was the fearsome Damocles-class Star Defender, a sleek and imposing warship whose design was heavily influenced by the beaten and battered Ressurgents used to mold it.
At an impressive length of four thousand meters, the Damocles was the largest production vessel in use by the Corellian Confederation, toeing the line of what was deemed excessive by member worlds of the Alliance. Braced by structural supports, the most striking feature of the Damocles was its large launch bay, created by a layered open area down the length of the vessel's dorsal and bow. This created a large and well-armored flight deck for the safe launch of the advanced starfighters used by the Corellian Confederation with armored sheets able to close above or below as needed. The weapons compliment of the Damocles was varied and deadly. Boasting hundreds of turbolaser batteries, laser cannons, missile tubes, and torpedo launchers it outgunned most vessels of its tonnage even among its neighbors. Supported by ion cannons, a web of point defense lasers and missile octets, the Damocles created a web of deadly fire that vessels would find difficult to escape unscathed.
A feature inspired by the incredibly effective Colony and Colony II-Class Battleships, the Damocles also held several light cruisers on standby within port and starboard side hangars. Encased in layers of armor, the hangars held a total of six Dagger-Class Assault Corvettes for use in boarding actions, force projection, and scouting on long-range missions. The hangars also held enough space to hold troop and material transports of various sizes as well as vehicles, walkers, and tanks in the event of a prolonged invasion providing a more than serviceable launching platform for planetary invasions. The Damocles-class Star Defenders, while partially automated like most modern vessels, still required a rather large crew. They were protected by a legion of Corellian Marines and a platoon of Corellian Halcyon Commandos. As such, the Damocles was equipped with facilities to house, train, and care for the needs and wants of the crews of these vessels who expected long deployments along the borders of Confederation Space and occasionally beyond when working in concert with the Galactic Alliance military.
Though initially few in number, plans were introduced to eventually scrap the Confederation's entire fleet of scavenged and refitted Resurgents and replace them with the Damocles. However, for now they lived in harmony, defending Corellian interests at home and abroad as command ships and mobile bases for the Corellian Defense Force. Some senators claimed that the construction of such vessels was like dangling a lightsaber over the head of the peace the Alliance had fought so hard for with the slightest stress on that peace thinning the cable until it snapped, shattering that peace forever.
