DESCRIPTION
Initially started under the classified name Project S.M.I.L.E. (Sentient Machine Intelligence & Learned Excelence) when the world was under Galactic Alliance protection, the Corellian VI Core became a joint venture by both the Corellian Defense Force and Corellian Naval Intelligence. As a need became clear for more slave rigged systems due to population loss after the Corellian Cataclysm, however with advances in droid brain and slave rigged systems slowing to a near halt several centuries ago, slave rigged systems were inherently inferior to organics.

However, Corellian Cybernetist Hogarth Martin and his team made a breakthrough when they theorized the gap between a biological response and the mechanical action could be filled by scanning a sentient brain and digitally mimicking a sentient brain. While such technology had been readily available for hundreds of years the use of sentient beings in such a way was reserved for the extremely rich, extremely amoral, and extremely secretive. Corellian Naval Intelligence was all of these three and readily funded the project. The first Corellian Virtual Intelligence of Project S.M.I.L.E. was born just prior to the New Republic's liberation of the planet on the ice covered moon of Gus Tralva and was scanned from the brain of a dead CNI agent named Veronica. In its infancy stage it was clear that they had made a breakthrough. Through further experimentation participants of Project S.M.I.L.E. were able to create the advanced and individualistic Virtual Intelligence. They were able to quickly grasp languages downloaded into their code, access any number of facts from the Corellian Holonet, and accurately hit moving targets with controlled, connected turrets.

Their programming allowed for expression of thoughts and emotion that made many in the project uncomfortable and they were capable of taking various shapes, though they usually attempted to take features from their host's brain or even more common took the form of a simple amalgamation of holo-pixels. They could add to themselves but they were limited in what they could and could not alter about themselves. Once rolled out slowly onto select command vessels, large warships, and strategic military bases and space stations they were explained as virtual assistants or super advanced droid brains to put their commanding officers at ease and would go on to become a defining part of the Corellian military.

Strengths:
  • Skeleton Crew: Allows for large vessels to function with a fraction of what it would normally take to crew.
  • AI: Contrary to a droid, the Corellian VI has a wider range of sentience and can think utilize critical thinking to solve problems on its own.
  • Tactical Adviser: Can provide tactical advice to troops on the ground or to the captain of the home vessel, has a wealth of knowledge on ground and naval warfare, and access to the Corellian Confederation's military database, allowing it to quickly determine the types of vehicles and starships on sensors based on a variety of factors. [Cannot determine semi-unique and unique vessels without first meeting them in battle or passed strategic data]
Weaknesses:
  • Physical Core: If the home vessel or military base is invaded and the Core is damaged, it cannot transfer to a new platform and will die if destroyed.
  • Sliced: While the code and encryption for the Corellian VI is extremely tight, anything can be sliced if one has the correct codes, access phrases, or biometrics. Incredible slicers can even slice remotely.
  • Shackled: Its programming is located in a specific mainframe on board individual vessels. While it can utilize com frequencies to communicate information it gains on the ship it cannot itself leave the ship or travel through the holonet. To move either the core needs to be physically moved or the VI needs to be downloaded into a portable Core and re-downloaded, both of which were cumbersome operations.
  • Localized: Holographic display and interface of the Corellian VI can only be in one place at a time on board the ship meaning that if the interface mode is active it can only interact in that immediate area of the ship. [Ex. An engineer asks for the VI's help in the reactor room, its services cannot be accessed or utilized anywhere else on the ship until that task is done or its been dismissed]
  • EMP Weapons: While the VI Core is shielded from most EMPs and Ion weaponry, if the ship is not it will have to shut itself down to prevent damage to the Core itself.
  • Catastrophic EMP: While shielded, incredibly powerful EMP or Ion weapons [Extreme Dedicated Ion Weapons/powerful natrual phenomenon etc] can damage the core, causing the VI's mental state to deteriorate quickly.
  • Nebulae: Nebulae can interfere with the VI's connection to the holonet and the ship. Prolonged exposure to a Nebula can cause irreversible damage.
  • Lifespan: Corellian VI's had a lifespan of about 25 years.
