Description

The 42nd Attack Battalion - also known as the Sol Tempests - of the larger 57th Division Frontier Garrison is a prominent, elite unit of troopers drawn from a number of Confederate units - both standing and defunct - that specialize in Space Warfare, specifically operations involving boarding of starships or space-stations. Denoted by their gun-metal grey colorization of their armor and marked with a single yellow stripe down the middle of their helmets - the 42nd Attack Battalion receives additional training in operating in space which further compliments and otherwise augments their already formidable prowess as warriors. Additional markings on their armor often pertain to a specific unit within the overall Battalion - denoting their Company or Platoon, their rank in the overall Battalion and often a specialization - with each armor bearing the stylized Sol emblem of their unit, often on the left pauldron of their armor. Comprised of smaller units such as the 8th Heavy Assault Company, 43rd Infiltration Platoon, and 58th Flamer Battery - the 42nd Attack Battalion is utilized in a purely offensive means; however, due to the nature of their specialized purview of combat - they do not utilize any means of vehicle beyond specialized boarding craft such as the Gaav II-class Shuttle or the more unique Boarding Torpedoes. Each trooper is equipped with the Project Omega armor platform as well as a Project Theta Kinetic Rifle and accompanying explosive ordinance often of a more less-than-lethal design. More specialized and highly trained troopers of the 42nd Attack Battalion - such as those of the 58th Flamer Platoon - are equipped with a Project Eta Flame Projector or a Project Theta Heavy Kinetic Rifle. The 42nd Attack Battalion - being an integral part of the larger 57th Division Frontier Garrison - often work closely with the 256th Siege Battalion, also known as the Castellans of the Void; as their offensive strategies often compliment the more defensive strategies and capabilities of their sister Battalion. There is a great respect among the troopers of the 42nd Attack Battalion for those in the 112th Company - the Ashen Guard - for their ruthless training regime involved in become a member of that particular unit. Likewise, a sizeable number of these troopers - as they had previously served in the now defunct Dauntless Commandos - look down on the newly established Confederate SCAR Commandos, viewing them as a pale comparison to the former organization.

Combat Function

The Sol Tempests specialize in offensive scenarios centered around boarding of Starships or Stations to either capture or destroy as deemed necessary by the current mission parameters. Utilizing unique means of transportation - such as the Gaav II-class Shuttle or the more hazardous Boarding Torpedo, troopers of the 42nd Attack Battalion make entry onto a target and secure the immediate surroundings to ensure their foothold - be it to be utilized as a fallback position to regroup in the case of staunch opposition, or as a means to exfiltrate from the target in those instances when destruction, sabotage, or raiding is the designated mission. Though equipped with heavier weapons such as the Project Theta Kinetic Rifle, the 42nd Attack Battalion often prefers to utilize less-than-lethal explosive ordinances such as Cryoban and Stun Grenades to secure a vessel or station to ensure minimal damage to any internal structures. If deemed necessary, troopers are permitted to utilize Project Rho disruptor grenades to clear more hazardous or staunch opposition to their advancements. Depending solely on their current directive often affects the tactics, habits, and overall means in which they achieve a goal - though more often than not, troopers of the 42nd Attack Battalion are seen as relentless - just as likely to walk through enemy fire to advance towards a specific goal as they are to utilize flanking maneuvers and carefully planned and executed tactics to achieve mission success.

STRENGTHS

Specialized Combat Training - Each member of the 42nd Attack Battalion undergoes additional specialized combat training to ensure that they are more than capable of handling the weapon and armor systems that they are outfitted with as well as being capable of utilizing any number of weapon systems that they may come in contact with during an operation.

Veterans - Drawn from any number of Confederate units across the breadth of the Confederacy - troopers of the 42nd Attack Battalion are veterans of multiple campaigns, from the Mandalorian Invasion of Eshan to the terrorist attacks perpetrated upon Ryloth by the Agents of Chaos - a great number also had previously served in the now-defunct Confederate Dauntless Corps.

Relentless - The 42nd Attack Battalion is known for its relentless mindset - specifically seen during operations focus on raiding or rapid insertion and exfiltration of a designated target. In many cases, a trooper is just as likely to march through a hail of blaster bolts to acquire a target as they are to utilize smaller unit tactics to accomplish a mission.

Small Unit Tactics - Comprised of a Battalion strength - the 42nd Attack Battalion shines when utilized in smaller groupings often deployed in Company or Platoon strength when utilized against a target, and also allowing for greater unit cohesion as well as more freedom of decision when it comes to an individual commander.

Dynamic Entry - Their utilization of specialized boarding vessels ensures that they are not forced to rely upon boarding a target via the conventional docking bay or docking clamps that may be reinforced or otherwise heavily defended. This ensures that they are more than capable of surprising the defenders of a target via inserting into an area or location that was not expected.

Disruptor Grenades - Though preferring to utilize less-than-lethal explosive ordinance, the unit is nonetheless equipped and permitted to utilize Project Rho Disruptor Grenades against targets that are more heavily defended or providing a stronger resistance than expected.

WEAKNESSES

Specialized Combat Training - Though trained to be able to handle a number of weapon systems outside of their standard issued weapons, it leaves the troopers of the 42nd Attack Battalion in a weird limbo of sorts. Troopers - while more than capable of these weapons - is nonetheless a jack-of-all-trades, and do not specialize in just one individual aspect or weapon as seen in other units. This can cause them to be reliant upon additional units or support for more specialized missions outside of their normal purview.

Relentless - The well-known reputation of the 42nd Attack Battalion as being relentless in their mindset and focus is also problematic to the overall health and wellbeing of the greater unit. This mindset can often create a tunnel vision effect, leaving an individual trooper vulnerable to heavier firepower or otherwise placing a unit at greater risks and thus potentially higher casualty rates.

Resupply - A great deal of the weapon systems utilize by the 42nd Attack Battalion are heavily reliant upon solid munitions or fuel - making it a priority to ensure that such a supply line remains established to ensure continued operational capacity. In the event that such a supply is lost or otherwise missing, the combat effectiveness of the 42nd Attack Battalion would suffer.

Troop Replenishment - The status of the troopers of the 42nd Attack Battalion as veterans of any number of conflicts makes replenishing their ranks all the more difficult. It can often take months, if not years, to fully and properly train replacements to fill the ranks of those that may have fallen in the continued conflicts across the Galaxy.

Limited Operational Time - Though their armor is capable of being equipped with an additional pack that can extend useable oxygen reserves, they are not intended to be deployed into the void of space. In those instances in which they are, their operational time is limited and it is suggested that a more specialized space-combat unit is utilized.

No Vehicle Support - Outside of the more unique vessels that are utilized to board a target - the 42nd Attack Battalion has no vehicle support of any form, lacking every something as simple as an armored speeder, light-tank, or even an armored personnel carrier. Placing them at a disadvantage if they are accidentally stationed planetside or otherwise caught on the ground during mobilization or unit transition.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The past Decade within the greater Galaxy and the events held within have continued to shake up the status quo of the established order and have seen a number of cataclysmic events shake the galaxy and its star-spanning powers to the very core of their being. None more so have been affected by these events than the Confederacy of Independent Systems and its member worlds - with the government's sovereignty, economy, and militarily threatened and challenged by any number of individuals and organizations that sought to make the titan bleed. It was the terrorist assault of the Agents of Chaos on Ryloth that saw the greatest need for a newer military force that could protect the Confederacy whilst also ensuring that each individual unit was specialized rather than attempting to cover multiple events and avenues. Couple with the dismantling, expulsion, or otherwise standing down of the Confederate Dauntless Corps and a shakeup among the military hierarchy of its armed forces - the following event of Confederacy First put greater pressure on the need to establish a formidable force that could be deployed by the Confederacy. In secret, the first projects were spoken of and constructed, and the first Confederate Space Marine units were outfitted and marshaled in the shadows. With the repeal of the Confederate First Mandate by the Ametrine Accords, the 42nd Attack Battalion was fully revealed and its architect behind the shadows placed their full command into the hands of the Confederate Vicelord, Darth Metus , himself - thus providing him the full autonomy to deploy the 42nd Attack Battalion as he saw fit to ensure the continued existence of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

I went over it pretty thoroughly and came to the same conclusion. I think it's just the term "space marine" that raises eyebrows these days...But if the submission is read thoroughly it becomes clear that it's meant in more of a "general" term. Nice work, lovely sub.
