STRENGTHS
- Wall of lazers. The primary function of the Val Khaar-class corvette is to act as a screening vessel against enemy fighters and ordinances using the Big Cat Gatling Lazer Cannons in concert with the 4 ST-Class Multirole Fighters that it carries.
- Well-rounded. This ship is designed to be versatile for independent assignments in addition to being valuable in the battle line.
WEAKNESSES
- Tiny hangar bay. The hangar bay is simply too small to carry more than 4 small fighters.
- Sweltering heat. During combat, certain parts of the ship’s interior get pretty hot due to the high heat output of the ship’s Big Cat Gatling Lazer Cannon system. The crew that serves in those parts of the ship will complain, but won’t die.
- High maintenance. The laminated hull plates often require a little “TLC” in between naval actions. If it goes too long, it affects the defences of the ship, but it gives the crew something to do on downtime.
DESCRIPTION
Viken Dobson’s own Big Cat Gatling Lazer Cannon was such a big hit in the Ferrum class light bomber that he was asked to put it on a capital ship to help showcase what else it could do. So he threw together a scratched draft of a corvette based on the success of the Makashi class light cruiser and sent it to Veistien Labs to have their own engineers hash out the rest of the design. Sadly, the Gatling Lazer Cannons proved to be too difficult to manage the heat output and power requirements. The design was almost scrapped when Viken pulled some strings with his father’s political influence and had the designs sent to MandalArms to have their engineers take a look and see what they came up with.
The overall design is a perfect meld of Veinstein Labs and Innovation designs and MandalArms engineering. MandalArms (now Mandal-Elysium Arms) was able to ditch the static and heat discharge vein systems at the back of the Makashi design and use a mandalorian integrated design which was much more efficient. Even with the more robust power grid to support the weapons systems, both companies were able to work out enough space to add a small hangar to support up to 4 of the new ST-Class Multirole Fighters.
Some of these ships are scheduled to be fitted with a smoke generator which creates a smokescreen that trails behind the ship in flight. The technology is considered highly valuable to the Elysium Empire, so it is only used on a select few vessels. These ships are to be considered a special unit.
When two or more of these ships are defending a position in concert, they form an impenetrable wall of lazer fire that small fighters or ordinances cannot pass without serious debilitating losses. The fire control systems are tied right into the hangar flight control systems so that the fighters and gunners can coordinate effectively with overlapping support. The pilots, gunners and flight control officers are all trained accordingly.
Lastly, the Val Khaar-Class Corvette is named after Val Khaar who sacrificed himself during the Raid against The Agents of Chaos. The campaign resulted in a stalemate, but it brought in a large amount of funds via gems for The Elysium Empire. It is speculated that this may have been a direct cause of the fall of The Agents of Chaos. It is only fitting that the Elysium Empire would name a class of warships after him.
