The beginning is always followed by the eventual breach. Once the pressure becomes too much to maintain, when the first shatters appear and that which seemed impossible before, now has become inevitable. Four worlds and now four worlds more. The Sith were coming like the tide. There was no end to them. Everyone thought the Covenant and the Order fearsome on their own, but together, they came down like a current to reclaim relics and holdings.

Four more worlds.

These worlds were just new to the Sith yoke as the first four. The situation was unstable, there was an itch in the air, as everyone held their breath and awaited to see how the Sith would approach this new union.

Would they come with the sword again? Would they come with promises? It was hard to say. The only thing that was certain... were the words of the Sith'ari. They boomed along, at the backs of those approaching these worlds.

Go forth and claim what you can. As quickly as you can. Bring to me these worlds and their allegiance, expand our territory until you are sick with avarice and your veins are running black with exhaustion.

Do what must be done. Make your Empress proud. Make me proud. Bring as many of them home and we will reward you.

This, your Sith’ari decrees.

There was a certain irony here - Arris Windrun, a cyborg, on Kiffu during the lightning season. Storms rolled across the sky, erupting tendrils of blue, purple, and white. Thunder roared so loudly that it left her with a tinny sense of hearing. She'd have to replace those audio receptors later.

Arris found refuge in the world's capital, where great towers drew the lightning towards them. She had arrived only a few hours earlier, and found herself waiting beside the entrance of a great house, where some influential locals had gathered to discuss the Sith occupation. Hearsay was as relevant as the storm above, for there were such rumors as to what was happening on their world.

Some feared the Sith were preparing something sinister for them. Others - foolishly hopeful - believed that maybe they would finally pull out.

Arris Windrun wasn't here to convince them one way or another. In time, reality would settle all doubts.

However, she wouldn't be the one to decide their future, beyond her immediate concerns for Kiffu: it was very near the High Republic.

She dragged her cigarette and looked down the street, where two figures approached.

Were these them?

The cyborg raised a lazy hand in greeting and flicked the cigarette into a nearby puddle. Then, she crossed her arms, leaning back against the building.

"Arris Windrun." She introduced.

THE ETERNAL FATHER ◆ THE SHADOW OF THE EMPIRE

The doors to the council chamber shuttered open with a serpentine hiss, heavy footfalls dredging forth the shadow of the Dark Lord as He passed beyond the threshold. He left the myriad of raised voices behind, letting these avaricious oligarchs divide the spoils of their newfound bounty as they wished. So long as it was the Empire that benefited, He could honestly care little how they scurried. If they dared to reach for more than what given, then they would find such an offending hand lobbed off at the wrist.

"Their greed vexes me, regardless of how we can use it to control them." His rumbling voice carried no farther than He allowed. Even at full cadence, none could eavesdrop on the Dark Lord unless He permitted it. "Even so, I place my faith in your designs, my old friend, I trust in your mind and in your wisdom. If I am to suffer their mewling for a day to reap the benefits of tomorrow, then I will embrace such suffering." Though a savvy political operator, the Dark Lord had little patience for the avarice of corporations. It was beneficial, yes, but nonetheless He found such scheming wanting. He yearned for the straightforwardness of direct state control.

He looked to Taeli Raaf, one of His longest allies, co-conspirators, and friend; as much weight as that word had among the Sith, anyway. "What is our next move, Taeli?"

ORD PROVIDENCE

It was becoming something of a habit at this point, but if it pleased Mercy then Astra wouldn't complain. Ord Providence was a world already ruined by the time the Sith Covenant laid eyes on it. Recent developments had opened up opportunities of expanding into the Order's territory, which a Corpo wouldn't turn down given the opportunity. Thus, Sanguine Enterprises had organized a surveying and construction crew to head toward the Western realm.

The first few transports had descended through the fouled atmosphere to take position at Site Alpha. Astra Sadow strode down the ramp wearing a transparent helm that left her burnt golden eyes clearly visible. A form-fitting leather-like, black environment suit covered her body. Just because one was forced to conceal themselves didn't mean a little style couldn't be adopted.

She took a moment to tilted her chin up in order to visually survey the ruins of the dome over Provinia before them. Meanwhile, others descended from their vessels to begin connecting the portable structures brought down from orbit. Their chatter registered, but nothing warranted her personal input. The briefings above had been thorough with assignments, objectives, and timelines already established. This wasn't their first broken world they'd need to rebuild. Though this was perhaps the most polluted so far.

"There is something in the air,"
Astra breathed for Lysander's benefit. Something familiar. Something strange. Perhaps they would be accosted by those claiming to be the reconstituted government of Ord Providence, but her attention lay... elsewhere for the moment.

ORD PROVIDENCE
Astra Sadow Astra Sadow

Working for the greater 'good' of the Sith had never been something Lysander struggled with. A good chunk of his time as an emissary had been spent navigating ambitions and irreconcilable egos. In that search for alignment, some could scarcely agree on the shape of tomorrow. With so much in flux, he couldn't ignore an opportunity to help shape whatever came next.

Ord Providence represented the sort of opportunity that naturally drew his attention. If anyone had bothered to ask, that was the story he would have told. And it held up, more or less. But it wasn't the whole of it. At some point, without quite noticing when, he'd started collecting reasons of his own for leaning into certain deals, and this one was no different. He wasn't in any hurry to hold those reasons up to the light.

He might've even forgone the helmet under different circumstances. After all, he was arriving as an observer, not a combatant, right? Well, one never could truly tell, nor did Ord Providence inspire that level of comfort. So the helmet stayed on, paired with a charcoal environmental suit built for practicality. If the whole getup made him look harsher than he meant to, then so be it.

His lightsaber remained tucked discreetly at his side. Nightstar, for all its virtues, had never been suited to subtlety, and he was still getting the hang of the Fold. Better not to lean on a trick he hadn't fully figured out yet.

Keeping pace with Astra, he looked out over the wreckage ahead. "If you're referring to the Clouzon-36, my helmet's been reminding me of it since we landed." The helmet had its perks. Its HUD fed him a stream of environmental readouts and other details, all hovering just at the edge of sight.

"You know, there is something poetic about a second chance. About a place being allowed to begin again. Most worlds never get that gift. And the few that do seldom use it wisely."

Lysander took another step. "Convincing the people who used to live here to trust the process is a different beast altogether." The vocoder stripped the mirth from his next words. "Though, knowing you, you've probably already anticipated that problem. Perhaps you've even secured the rights to name the next dome before anyone else thought to ask." Or all of them, actually.

"I've found it always keeps me sharp," she replied, her voice light as she tried to hide the amusement from her face. She knew Carnifex appreciated corporate products, but the maneuvering and power plays within the corporate sphere were... not to his liking. The Thyferra project was advancing well, at least for the planning stages, but the corporate executives they had left in the chamber were only the beginning. "Many executives are almost Sith-like in how they operate. Perhaps that is why we have always worked so well together, Sith and megacorporation."

That, and they were always easy to manipulate with their greed. The corrupt ones at least. She found fair dealings also opened the same doors. A lesson from Danger that she had taken to heart prodigiously.

"They'll do much of the hard work while we proceed with the actual project," she continued, glancing at the larger man bestride her. The two were such an odd symbol within the Sith; equally powerful Sith that could have easily been rivals, but had instead forged an enduring alliance that had toppled nations, broken through the dividing veil of the Living and Unifying to the source of life itself, and so many other endeavors that spanned decades now. "Our next steps are to begin roping in others with connections to the Core, solidify the supply chain, while we get the Shapers brought in. I was thinking von Ascania as a partner for the Core, he's proven useful so far."

She would press the button for the turbolift, while also summoning Lucy to meet them at the bottom. When it opened, she would gesture for him to step through first and then join him, the lift carrying them away. "What to do believe the next move should be?"

Lucy wanted to say she was really paying attention. The honest answer was, partly. In truth, she was thinking about her beloved Viers. Oh, how Viers must be so bored and alone. She had accompanied her grandmother after another of her cousins had dropped out. One of Kai's siblings, she recalled. Vikar, or the sister... Aleya, that was her name.

Awful that it took her that long to recall. Awful that she was here on Thyferra and not in a lab, or out in the field collecting samples.

No, here she was, waiting.

She knew that Thyferra had been ruined as a result of the invasion. She also knew her grandmother wanted to help, although how far that went, Lucy would observe. There had been this idea that if Lucy was going to try and maintain some semblance of an alter ego before the wider galactic public, she needed to start that now. And so, there she was, accompanying Grandmother Taeli on the occasion.

Lucy waited there at the bottom of the damn lift, looking at her chrono and wondering if she could get a signal out here on her new Moonglow device. It was the latest model offered by Locke & Key. She popped her mint-flavored gum whilst she waited for her grandmother and her friend.

THE ETERNAL FATHER ◆ THE SHADOW OF THE EMPIRE

"Strengthen our grip on neighboring systems. Thyferra may be ours, but a single weakness can compromise even the strongest of foundations. Some have professed obeisance, but others have been remarkable silent. We must rectify this lapse in judgment, and remind them that silence can not and will not be their shield. When brought before the power of the Sith, they must kneel or be broken. Bringing Lysander von Ascania Lysander von Ascania into the fold is a wise decision."

The lift doors opened, and the Dark Lord slipped inside alongside Taeli. The mechanisms had been reinforced to withstand more than a ton of weight, a feature the Dark Lord had installed as conventional lifts struggled to bear His three hundred kilogram weight. After a moment, it began to descend through the central spire tethering the floating fortress to the planet below. Light whirled past, briefly illuminating their faces in periodic bursts.

"If what the Empress has planned is to succeed, then we must ensure that nothing can compromise it." He did not agree with everything that the Empress had spoken to Him about, and He advised her as such. But neither was He the one to break just because of a disagreement, not when all His machinations could adapt to new realities with enough care and diligence.

When the doors opened, the Dark Lord emerged first. His shadow fell across a young woman with eyes of cool mint green, a girl whose countenance bore many similarities with that of Taeli Raaf. He towered over the both of them, a monolith of war bound in Human skin. With measured precision, the Dark Lord flattened one hand over His chest.

"Greetings, young Raaf."

Lysander missed the battle with the Republic altogether. By the time he found reason to visit Thyferra, the fighting was over, and the occasion was something altogether different. He accompanied his cousin Lily Rhodes Lily Rhodes to the Feast, enjoyed the festivities, and departed without much reason to believe he would return.

The journey back carried a small irony of its own. The freighter that brought him back to Thyferra was built from the designs of one of the very people he'd come to discuss matters with.

By the time he settled into the reception lounge, Lysander found himself with some time to spare. After seeing to correspondence concerning Brentaal, he struck up a conversation with the receptionist; nothing terribly important, just a few questions about the planet itself and whether anything was worth seeing if he managed to finish his business early. Not every interaction needed to be a diplomatic exercise.

It was then that he sensed a pair of presences approaching. Familiar signatures, easily named; the third belonged to a woman already waiting by the turbolift, one he couldn't place.

Once the others exchanged their courtesies, Lysander rose to his feet and made his way over, offering a respectful bow. "Lady Raaf." Then his gaze climbed to the far taller figure beside her. "Lord Carnifex." Those emerald eyes drifted from one face to the other. "A pleasure to see you both again."

And he meant it. There was much he wished to speak of with each of them, in time. After the siege of Coruscant, the Kainite had worked their way near the top of Lysander's list of people worth understanding. As the Order pushed deeper into the Core, the value of cultivating those relationships only became clearer.

Lightning split the sky above Kiffu as Gerwald walked through the capital, illuminating the towers in stark flashes of white and violet. The thunder that followed rolled between the structures with enough force to make the air itself seem to tremble.

Gerwald barely acknowledged it.

There was something almost appropriate about the storm. The Second Legion had not come to Kiffu for ceremony, nor had Gerwald been sent to make assurances about what Sith occupation would mean for the people who lived beneath those violent skies. His orders were considerably more practical. The Legion would establish an outpost on Kiffu, and from that foothold the Sith would create a permanent holding capable of supporting whatever came next.

The High Republic was too close for anything less.

Irina walked with him, and Gerwald had deliberately brought her rather than surrounding himself with a procession of officers. The Legion's command staff would have their work soon enough. Survey teams were already beginning the process of identifying viable locations, considering access, defense, communications, and the infrastructure necessary to keep an Imperial presence supplied.

Gerwald wanted to see Kiffu himself before committing the Legion to one of them.

Another flash of lightning threw the street into sharp relief, and Gerwald spotted the woman waiting near the entrance of the house ahead. The faint smell of extinguished tobacco reached him before they closed the remaining distance.

She introduced herself.

Gerwald stopped before her, standing tall despite the storm raging overhead. Gold eyes settled on the cyborg for a moment before he inclined his head.

"Gerwald Lechner."

His gaze shifted briefly toward Irina.

"Irina Jesart."

There was no elaborate introduction beyond that. Titles had their uses, but Gerwald had never needed them to make his presence understood.

His attention returned to Arris.

"I have been tasked with establishing the Second Legion here and securing a permanent Sith holding on Kiffu."

Another peal of thunder rolled over the capital. Gerwald glanced toward the distant towers as lightning crawled across the clouds beyond them, then looked back to the woman waiting for them.

"I want to see what we have to work with."

A faint edge of a smile touched his mouth.

"Lead the way."

ORD PROVIDENCE

She was not. Still, Astra managed to draw her gaze back to what was before them and to Lysander in particular.

"It is poetic," she agreed, "that you're romanticizing second chances when that's precisely what Mercy forces on planets and I've been tasked with cleaning up." A soft chuckle followed the jab. "But, you're right. People are not easily convinced a place is safe. That isn't the hard part, however. With so many refugees in the galaxy and planets all too happy to see them go, refuse has a bad habit of trying to wash ashore on reclaimed beached. People with nothing to lose and nothing to exchange for the pain of providing for them. Corporations need workers, Lysander, not seat warmers. And so many eager to accept even somewhere half this dangerous are often little more than that."

Once a city was rebuilt, perhaps they'd be a need for alchemical test subjects and scientific experiments. At the start, those things weren't of much use to her. On the other hand, anyone with a strong physique though could find work hauling chunks of fallen structures away, or moving material into position. How many refugees could be said to posses such physicality, however?

"This is one of the worst disasters I've ever laid eyes on. I expect them to let me do whatever I want if they expect even one dome to be finished in their lifetimes." She'd get more than that done, but there was no need for them to know that. They might start thinking they had room to negotiate.

"Join me for surveying the area?" Astra asked Lysander with a smirk.

Janara III
ICV Artiguez

The stars returned to their customary positions as the Artiguez emerged from hyperspace, her aging hull shuddering almost imperceptibly as the great frigate settled into realspace.

Beyond the forward viewport hung Janara III.

Iskendyr Yvarro studied the planet in silence. From this distance, it appeared almost peaceful, its broad continents partly obscured by sweeping cloud formations. Sunlight caught the edge of its atmosphere, tracing a thin, luminous arc against the darkness.

Somewhere beneath those clouds lay the remnants of the First Order's conquest.

"All vessels, report status," Commander Atabey ordered.

The bridge stirred with activity.

"Both Berceys reporting nominal, Commander. Kelly screen reforming on our flanks."

"Very good. Maintain formation and begin passive scans. I want our intentions perfectly clear."

Iskendyr clasped his hands behind his back, as he listened to the exchange.

Eleven vessels. One restored Ecklund, two Berceys, and eight Kelly-class cutters. Hardly an armada, particularly compared with the tremendous fleets the Commonwealth maintained nearer its borders.

Still, the sight of them approaching might trouble anyone familiar with the First Order's history here.

"An interesting place," Iskendyr murmured.

Atabey glanced toward him. "Interesting isn't necessarily reassuring, Master Yvarro."

"No, I suppose not."

He paced toward the viewport, studying the planet more closely. He had spent much of the journey reading accounts of Operation Fallen Sword, when the First Order, approaching the height of its power, had brought Janara III beneath its authority.

How triumphant those reports had sounded.

He wondered what the Janarans had written.

For a moment, he almost imagined he could hear the echoes of those old fleets: officers issuing commands, alarms sounding, the thunder of weapons long since silenced.

Almost, Iskendyr sighed.

He scratched the back of his head.

"Commander, have we received confirmation of our landing arrangements?"

"Stand by."

Atabey turned toward communications.

"Transmit our credentials and survey authorization. Inform local control that we intend to establish a temporary research presence at the agreed site."

"Aye, Commander."

Iskendyr exhaled softly, he did not want to seem impatient or agitated. He was neither, he understood these things took time.

Far beyond the Commonwealth's own territories, Janara lay within a region increasingly associated with Sith influence and reports of the expanding Blackwall. It was an uncomfortable place to arrive with so modest a contingent.

His aunt had agreed to the expedition, but only after making the conditions abundantly clear.

You are not going there to plant flags, Iskendyr.

He could practically hear her.

They were here to investigate. To learn.

Nothing more.

"Landing coordinates received," the communications officer announced. "Local control acknowledges our authorization."

Atabey approached the tactical display.

"Very well. The Artiguez will maintain orbital position with the screening vessels. Have the Berceys proceed with their preliminary surveys. Master Yvarro, your landing party may prepare."

"Splendid."

"Within the designated area," she added.

He smiled. "Naturally."

"And no unscheduled excursions."

"Commander, you wound me."

"I intend to keep you alive."

Later, Iskendyr was on his way to the surface of Janara III.

The shuttle descended through layers of white cloud, its engines producing a low, continuous vibration beneath the cabin floor.

Iskendyr sat beside a viewport, watching the landscape emerge.

Low hills stretched toward the horizon, broken by old roads, scattered settlements, and the distant geometric silhouettes of abandoned industrial structures. Whatever wars had passed across this world, life had continued afterward.

Across from him, two historians quietly reviewed their survey notes. A security officer checked the landing perimeter while another scholar attempted, unsuccessfully, to keep several loose datapads organized.

"Rather beautiful, isn't it?" Iskendyr remarked.

One historian glanced outside.

"From up here, certainly."

He understood the qualification.

The shuttle banked, revealing the designated landing area: a broad, weathered expanse beside the remains of an old administrative complex. Temporary survey markers already identified the permitted boundaries.

"Final approach," the pilot announced.

Iskendyr felt the landing gear extend.

Beyond the glass, the ruins grew larger.

Something stirred at the edge of his awareness.

A sensation.

Fleeting, indistinct, and gone before he could properly grasp it.

He straightened.

Not now, surely.

The shuttle settled onto Janaran soil with a gentle thud.

"Landing complete."

For a moment, nobody moved. Then the security personnel rose, followed by the researchers gathering their equipment. Iskendyr remained seated just long enough to look outside once more.

Fifty years earlier, soldiers of the First Order had come to this world with conquest in mind.

He had come with questions.

And, he hoped, enough sense to recognize the difference.

When the boarding ramp lowered, warm air swept into the cabin, carrying the unfamiliar scents of dust, vegetation, and distant rain.

Iskendyr rose, adjusted his jacket, and followed the others toward the sunlight.

His boots touched the ground.

Janara III.

At last.

Ank Kit'aar was typically a world of little interest beyond the sheer position of its system along the Sith's bordering worlds yet as of late it had proven to be a surprisingly sharp thorn in the side of local authorities. A cabal of failed Acolytes and disgruntled officers had made an uneasy alliance with some local dissidents to form a small yet exceptionally brutal resistance cell, one which displayed tactics and maneuvering that hinted at a much greater grasp of guerilla warfare and civil unrest than they should have had.

Yet one slip up, a single improperly coded communication, proved to be their undoing. The message was traced back to the cell's main base of operations which was apparently an ancient half-excavated Imperial Star Destroyer named the Potentate. It wasn't often that archaeological sites were the origin point for such great threats of strife, which made this operation something of a novelty to be sure. But not novel enough to garner anything larger than a token force sent to breach into the crashed vessel and eliminate its inhabitants.

The rest of the forces in the sector were still occupied putting out the fires that the cell had started, among other duties, and as such the forces allocated to capture the Potentate were largely comprised of conscript and penal units. Some of which had been loaned from the Core Worlds, just in case more local recruits might have sympathies with the cell's members. Before this hastily cobbled together task force was dispatched however, it was joined by an unlikely figure.

Darth Strosius offered Himself and a few squads of His own soldiers for the operation and in spite of their better judgement, He was allowed to tag along and spearhead the assault. His interest wasn't questioned, the organizers simply appreciated the addition of bodies to the effort that they weren't responsible for transporting and outfitting, but the Sith Lord had a rather pertinent question to answer that the commanders of the operation had all but completely ignored.

He intended to discover how a group of rabble managed to become so elite in their techniques of stoking civil disturbance and instability, even if He had to pry such knowledge from the mouths of the cell members themselves. Which was why for once, He wasn't simply carving into the rogue soldier before Him but was instead holding them in place while one of His accompanying soldiers wrangled them into a pair of restraints. "That's the hangar bay secured. Signal for our allies to land, we'll hold our advance until they arrive."

ORD PROVIDENCE

A smile surfaced beneath the helm. "There's a difference between appreciating a second chance and glorifying the circumstances that made one necessary. The Empress didn't ruin Ord Providence. We found it this way, didn't we?"

He took another step forward, twisting his torso first one way and then the other. "The people you bring in first, I figure, are gonna have quite a hand in shaping what this place eventually becomes. Engineers, workers, technicians.. their families too, down the line. Give 'em a good enough reason to stick around, and before long you've got the beginnings of a permanent population."

His eyes followed the workers as they went about their tasks. "So, you thought much about where you're actually gonna find these people? I mean, how many of the original inhabitants could possibly still be here? I doubt enough survived to meet the demand. And convincing people to pack up their lives and move somewhere like this? Well, I wouldn't envy whoever gets handed that assignment."

Then he glanced toward the ruined dome. "Only one in their lifetimes? That's a surprisingly low bar you've set for yourself. Should I be concerned?"

"Of course."
Lysander fell into step alongside her. "Well, history suggests it's unwise to leave such ambitious people unattended. The next thing I know.. you'll be explaining why the entire planet belongs to you."

ORD PROVIDENCE

"Quite right. After all, if I built it, why shouldn't I keep it?" Astra replied without hesitation. She would gladly explain why it belonged to her.

"We'll start with surveying the planet. Identify the best locations to rebuild. Begin construction on multiple domes at once." Though if any natives persisted she'd only set their expectations to one so they'd be suitably impressed later. "All lucrative efforts, which will continue even after construction ends with the cleanup. Inter-dome transportation." The Chairwoman of Sanguine Enterprise had an endless list of activities that would keep the money pouring in. "But," and this was the important part, "we'll need to identify a source of credits. Part of the surveying effort will be to identify if there are still high concentrations of Clouzon-36 to harvest." There wouldn't be any reason to improve the state of the planet if there wasn't a means of getting anything in return.

A soft laugh escaped her lips as she strode forward with something tickling her senses and drawing her forth. "Don't pretend the Covenant doesn't have people they wish were anywhere else, Lysander. The Sith might cause refugees to flee to the Republic, but that didn't mean all of them do so or make it. Their credits run out. Criminals grab them. Fear roots them. The reasons are numerous and unimportant, what matters is too many undesired people in the wrong place. We'll start with them." Back-breaking work in hazardous conditions... why not use relatively dispensable people first? "Later, I'll ramp out hiring skill labor for the more complex work."

Golden eyes narrowed as Astra regarded the surrounding area. "Do you feel that, Lysander?"
