Public Treasure among ashes

"Listen, Cap, not saying you don't know where you're going, but this is jump number… what" The Sullustan looked over at the astromech and piloting droid pair. The pilot droid indicated six dash marks. The challenge was that the ship the Captain used was one of the Starchaser Enterprises exploration vessels, piloted by a Starchaser. The thing was made to find treasures very quickly. And with Kaia Starchaser, she had a unique gift to find the gravity anomalies, it was easy to pull herself out of light speed and check what she had found. The Rim was always turning something new up for her.

"Yeah, well, we're in a mining vessel, with a few others in tow. We're not taking a Pathfinder to lead the fleet. I could make this in two jumps from Sullust."
She smirked and shook her head, her long black hair up in a messy bun. She wasn't really the one doing the mining today, she was coordinating, and a lot of the work was going to be done by mining lasers and tractor beams.

It didn't take but another jump as the Corellian Dawn and about a half dozen other vessels, flying flags from the Rimward Trade League, Spacer's Guild, and even the Scar Worlds groups. What she wanted to do was meet with those who came. As the ships arrived into the asteroid field, the scanners on any ship looking would find valuable ores and metals, nothing on the level of say songsteel or beskar, but enough trace elements of phrik.

The real test was what they were going to use this for.

"Alright, miners, welcome to Belt 1183K. We're in the remnants of a solar system whose sun went nova. Found this place, figure we can put the ores to good use, any thoughts?"
She was transmitting to the local fleet that was with her.

OOC: Open to mining operations, looking to make some credits by harvesting essentially rare earth elements and trace amounts of phrik. Looking to develop a little resource node.

The Requiem

“I read you, Starchaser,” Aeshi said over the comm, Alf leaning over the chair to adjust the scanning frequency. One hand increased the power while the other narrowed the frequency for a few specific combinations. “Depends on the compositions and quality we find, but Susefvi has refineries if we want something a little more pure.”

She paused to reroute power from the weapons into the scanner, fingers dancing across the command console as she spoke into the headset. Her Imyni co-pilot had his beak agains the scanner readout, checking and double checking the results.

“Or plenty of manufacturers who need to buy in bulk and are always looking for new suppliers,” she added after a moment. “I don’t typically work with rare materials like this, but there’s bound to be possibilities.”

Feth, maybe she could even get enough to make some arms out of phrik. That way she could totally punch Sith in the face.

To the mobile dark-side academy called the Pomojema, asteroid belt 1183K was nothing but a convenient nav marker, a waypoint to rest and repair. The navigators were focused on avoiding Drengir hunters. They completely missed the mining flotilla until the last moment before reversion.

The Pomojema exited hyperspace right around extreme weapons range. It didn't acquire a targeting lock on any of the mining vessels, but it kept shields up and weapons live. A random encounter like this could go any which way.

The Gray Queens Throne was lingering for the most part on the outer reaches of known routes, waiting to swoop in for various reasons depending on the ship's transponder signature. Hunting other pirates outside of the Kraken Coalition for fun as one part. Scaring the pants off unsuspecting traders before patting their back and letting them scurry away. Offering a hand to the damaged ships to get them to port when the occasion arose. As much as she was a pirate, she couldn't help the former slave part of her mind telling her to help others.

The ship had been running dark for a while now. The majority of the crew allowed some time to get rest and relaxation while a handful of volunteers manned the vital spots. A passive sensor ping alerted the wookie sitting behind the sensor console, furry head tilting sideways before opening the display to get a better readout.

Seemed there were miners about, hunting down materials from a spot that showed severe nova scorching across the outer remnants floating through. Furball tapped the line to the second in command, Vella the twi'lek grumbling and complaining as she rubbed her eyes and listened to the wookie rumble and explain the scan. Her eyes squinted, nodding before realizing she couldn't be seen and informing Furball that she would reach Sasmay.

"Make it a soft alert, wake up the required crew and get ready to spin up baseline systems. We aren't wanting to spook them, just reach out, alright?" Vella groggily informed the wookie that gave an affirming growl before the panel in her room lit up. The soft alert sent, those needed would wake shortly as Vella pulled on her duty clothes and trudged up the hallway.

Her hand reached up to knock before the low growl behind the door stopped her.

Myunna had no doubt heard her coming, and sounded like she was nose to door with how loud and easily she felt the vibrations from the beast. She wondered how to move forward, needing the captain to begin their journey forward, but also not wanting to get Myunna more riled than she seemed to be.

"Myunna, wake up Cull and have her come to the bridge please. We have people nearby." She felt silly talking to her, but had heard the Tu'kata speak before. Didn't mean she felt less silly for it. Her boots carried her quickly away from the slowly dying growl from behind the bulkhead style door until Furball welcomed her to the bridge.

After a short briefing with confirmations from a majority of the slowly waking crew, Vella had already decided a course of action when Sasmay came in yawning.

"Morning, sorry for the disturbance but-" Furball cut off Vella with another signature dropping into the scope, a look of worry about the twi'leks face for the development and prospect of the ship in question. "Well...that's...not good."

"That threatening the miners?" Sasmay asked finally, looking over the data herself. There was no clear sign to intent, but she was curious.

"Not currently." Vella interjected before Sasmay pointed to a spot between the flotilla and the station starship thing.

"Park us between the two. Maintain shields and get weapons online but do not target anyone." She spoke, voice clearer with the development than had been when she yawned her way into the bridge. Her one eye stared at the two parties, deciding a third group was a good idea to throw into the mix.

"Are we-"

"We aren't picking a fight, just peacekeeping and being a buffer." Sasmay informed her, her features showing debate as she pondered which colors to fly today. "Neutral transponder for now. Don't want the Eternals getting their hackles up for using them as peacekeepers this far out. Kraken flag doesn't need to make an appearance either. Might not be well received." Sasmay chuckled to herself. Those pairs alone were a bag of loth cats by themselves with the friction between them.

"Affirmative, taking us in." Vella informed the captain.

The Gray Queen's Throne made the jump, reverting to a point between and presenting broadside to both the Pomojema and the Requiem as it sat squarely between the two parties. Sasmay could feel the presence of the Pomojema, her singular eye fixed on the origin of the feeling of the dark side that ran through her as well. A smile dotted her face as Vella spoke up.

"Would you like to make contact with either?" There was a moment of pause, before the twitch of a stray lock had Sasmay chuckling to herself.

"Ask if anyone's got whiskey they'd be willing to trade for." Sasmay finally answered when Vella stared at her in annoyance.

Mining was boring work, she would be the first to admit. The fact is, she hadn't gotten the local scan of the system up before she started speaking, and once she transmitted to her friendlies, that was when the report came in. Was she going to need to run? She wasn't sure. But at least Ash was here. At least she had one known factor. The other captains on the friendly fleet? She wasn't sure with them. The Mirialan bit her lip.

"We can get it out of here, doubt any is as explosive as transporting coaxium through hyperspace. I think we can make it really work. Raw materials are needed but they're not going to sell as fast as fuel or any of the other rare materials."
She cracked her neck as she found her captain's seat.

"Getting the buyers may not be that hard. The galaxy is war torn, people will need to build ships, and the Scar Worlds can use the help. What we really need is to fight back the Sith, as well…"
Taking a second, she nodded "Plus the phri---" Her voice cut off as the sensors went off. Some ships that were identified as curious, or neutral.

"Got some fleets, Cap."
Came a call. Well, it was one fleet, and one vessel. She quirked up an eyebrow. "No one has targeted us." Kaia waved for the comms to be tuned to the vessels.

"New arrivals. This is Captain Starchaser aboard Corellian Dawn. We're a mining expedition… We are not here for conflict. State your purpose."
She had no idea who was in the ship at the edge of weapons range.

On one side, a collection of freighters and prospecting ships; on the other, Ashin's academy of dark side higher learning; and in the middle, a serious fighting vessel. The Pomojema — vaguely cubic, three to five hundred metres a side — probably massed as much as all the other ships put together. Decent sensor scans would show the academy ship had extremely strong defenses for its size, but low weaponry. The Pomojema also held three squadrons of decent fighters, which might or might not show up on focused scans. For the moment, Ashin opted to keep the starfighters close to her chest, unlaunched.

The return transmission, audible to all ships in the area of the asteroid cluster, was audio only. A woman's voice: cold and calm, in Basic.

"This is the independent vessel Pomojema. Just passing through. Identify yourselves. And no, we have no whiskey, but trade is on the table."

Cold shivers ran down Aeshi’s spine, unexpectedly and she sat upright in her chair, eyes sweeping across the asteroid field. But then the ship appeared- a massive, hulking vessel with a definite dark tinge. She squinted and adjusted the viewport as messages flashed across the comm nets.

“Pomojema…” Aeshi whispered slowly. She had heard of that ship before, but thought it a myth. A Sith answer to the Jedi praxeum ships, if she understood them correctly. So the legendary ship was real. And that meant it must have quite a bounty on it.

Was she going to do anything about that? A second ship appeared, interspersing between them and the Pomojema. A warship, certainly. Some sort of Nebulon frigate. Non-standard markings from she could see. Militia? Pirate? She couldn’t tell, but they weren’t shooting and they were between them and the flying academy.

Trade? They were talking about trade now. She talked to Kaia first. “Yeah, there’s a reason I don’t haul coaxium, but ores and metals I can do. And I have some contacts on Centares who’d want ore to rebuild after the Sith left.”

She kept her eyes on the scanners, watching the two massive ships face each down.

“I have whiskey to sell. Not a ton, but some. My own brand, actually.”

The Throne sat between the two. Bristling like a patient animal but keeping itself tucked between the two groups for the time. The Pomojema wasn't something Vella or Cull wanted to have a slug fest with, and felt the tension drain as comms lit up between the gathered parties.

"Any other death wish ideas, Captain?" Vella huffed, glaring across the bridge at the brunette.

"I'd say that was a success. No one's shooting. And we can get a small restock. I see this as a win." Sasmay chuckled, getting a proper gripe out of Furball as she shrugged. "It was that or let everyone stare down the barrels. If it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid."

The rest of the assembled bridge crew unanimously sighed. Sasmay threw her arms up before walking over to the comms and taking over.

"Captain Sasmay Cull of The Gray Queen's Throne. Got credits, some spare fuel, and if you have some patching up put off, I've got some repair droids for the job." She sent out across a wide channel for all in basic. There was no video but tone alone could let everyone guess she seemed all too pleased with herself.

So many ships in her sky. Some were friends, some were not. What she wanted to make sure was that the ones that were not friend? That they were identified. She could call in a few favors, maybe if her brother wasn't far he'd come in for backup. She still had her friends here, but the ones that she didn't know? She was going to be cautious.

A lesson from an old spacer.

"Miners, from the Rim. Working Rimward for resources to sell… Help the galaxy and all." If it came to it, she'd state Rimward Trade League, but if Pomojema was worth their knowledge, they'd have already pinged the Corellian Dawn as a RTL flagged Starchaser vessel.

"We're not here for war. Just here for the resources in this belt. Can trade some food, navigation data, help you find where you're going while we're in the belt. If you can transport materials, we can trade…"

There was a long pause as Ashin conferred with her quartermaster and ops crew. Taking anything aboard came with vulnerabilities attached; so did accepting nav data. All kinds of potential exploits ran through her mind. But with Drengir constantly on her trail, a better sense of the local routes — and the fuel to access them — could be invaluable. Worth the risk.

"Corellian Dawn, we'll pay for the nav data, any praedia in this sector. Ten thousand UCs. Gray Queen's Throne, another ten thousand for a standard capital fuel pod, full. No contact, just set it drifting our way." Another pause. "Requiem, two thousand for ten bottles of that whiskey in an escape pod."

Aeshi rested her chin on her hands, staring out the viewport. This and already turned out to be a more interesting trip than she expected. The various offers floated through the comm and she exchanged looks with her co-pilot. The Imyni shrugged after a moment.

“Does that cover the escape pod, do you think?” Aeshi asked, tapping a finger on her lips.

A few chortles and squawks and Aeshi slowly nodded. “Yeah, that’s true. It’s pretty close, at least. And seems a better way to end this situation.”

The Imyni pushed the comm button and Aeshi leaned over. “Looks like you’ve got yourself a deal. Whiskey inbound.”

She cut the transmission. “I’ll go get that packaged.” Aeshi swung herself out and headed back to the cargo hold, sliding down the ladder to the hold, where she unpacked a small crate of whiskey with the appropriate number, and lugged it over to the escape pod, where she secured it in the seats.

A few quick taps and the coordinates were set and she stepped away. One hand presses the button to launch the pod.

“Now to just hope we won’t need that pod later.”

As tension began to bleed from the situation, that escape pod of whiskey bottles began drifting toward the Pomojema. Naturally, the mobile dark side academy scanned the feth out of it and applied foresight danger sense and all that crap. In short order, the pod entered the hangar bay, where the whiskey was immediately secured. The goal there was to use bottles as appreciation and recognition prizes within the academy.

This purpose was, perhaps, blunted by the fact that the bottles were in the custody of the alchemist and poisoner Saavat Kishan.

Also worth noting: no tractor beam had actually been involved in securing that escape pod. An upper-level telekinesis class had done the job instead.

"Our thanks for the whiskey, Requiem."

"Sounds fair to me, Pomojema. How you want that to come at you. WE have a few different paths that were found following the cataclysm over at Csillia. Moving people through. Ship to ship or you want hard copies dropped?" Kaia was more than willing to help. From what she knew, the Pomojema was captained by one Ashin Varanin. But a name wasn't given and Kaia knew how space lanes worked.

She didn't want to hook up to that ship, but she could shunt the Dawn's systems. It wasn't like she was on her Pathfinder. If she was aboard the Needle, she'd be preferring to drop everything off and send it floating. But this was a mining ship, what was Ashin going to do, find where they were mining last week? Oh no.

Doing her best to set up a two-way direct with the Pomojema so no one else "We can shunt our systems, leave the data on a blank drive for you to take. Got a few oddities out here, local space has some anomalies. May help keep you moving."

She at least wasn't going to judge, not out here this was Fringe land. Or so the rumors said.

The Gray Queen's Throne idled quietly, listening to the back and forth before the escape pod from the Requiem. Sasmay sent a line down to egineering to coordinate the disharge of the spare fuel pod. The stern of the vessel slowly discharged a large pod, armored and shielded until it was ejected from the stern mounted section and aimed just beside the large sith ship.

"We sure about trading our spare this far out, Cull?" Vella huffed, watching as the engineers used the tractor beams to line up the pod for proper pickup before giving it a soft push in the proper direction.

"If we don't inspire kindness where we go, how can we expect others to do the same this far out?" Sasmay quietly informed her second. "Even disliking a group shouldn't mean we condemn others to a slow death."

The bridge was silent at the exchange, some pondering their views as Sasmay leaned into the railing behind the viewport and watched the pod slowly twirl towards the sith ship in a drift that would lead it just adjacent of the larger vessel.

"Captain of the Requiem, anymore of that whiskey left?" She pondered the exchange, wonder how best to go about it. "Could bring a smaller ship out to get it from you, hook up to the airlock. I'll even be nice and come by myself." She offered with a sharp look from Vella.

"Dawn, we'll take it hard copy, airgapped. Toss us a datapack and we'll handle it from there. Same arrangement's working out fine with the other boats. No offense — we all know the net value of trust in an Outer Rim encounter, don't we."

The pod eased aboard — again, without use of the Pomojema's tractor beams. That telekinesis seminar was aiming for extra credit and a bottle of Tillian whiskey.

"Throne, fuel pod received and it all checks out. Pleasure doing business with you."

She looked over her shoulder to the navigation chair. Despite there being one Starchaser on this ship, it was actually not a Force user sitting in navigation. The Dawn was a bulky beast, and she wasn't going to be threading any needles between supernovas and pulsars. But the ship did have an optimal route that her father had found out here and that was what was programmed in.

"Understood, Pomojema. Downloading your maps now. We won't take offense if you triple check them to make any jump. Have a few dead stars out here, so that'll throw you sensors for a loop."
She had no reason to not be untrustworthy. It was a few shortcuts and just a more updated map than what was out there.

A few moments after her transmission, a ping would greet Pomojema to illuminate where the small message pod was. "All yours. Fly safe out there." Little did she know that her brother was working on bounties being paid by the other pilot to hunt the Chia Pet's Evil Twin.

The hair prickled on Aeshi's neck and she let out a low breath. Yeah, that was Dark Side moving her whiskey. But that was fine. She wasn't overly concerned about the War of Light and Dark that raged through the galaxy. If she were being honest, she had more in line with the vague concepts of the Sith philosophy than the Jedi. But sadly, most Sith took control freak to a whole new level and tried to apply it to the galaxy instead of going to therapy like normal sentients.

She bristled slightly at the comment about trust in the Outer Rim, but she held her tongue on the comms. She just rolled her eyes at her co-pilot. "We know what trust is worth in the Outer Rim," she mimicked. "Sorry if you don't know how the code of the frontier works."

Another message through the channel and she tilted her head to listen. "Yeah, we have whiskey still. Feel free to come on over and pick some up. Can never go wrong with an impromptu deep space party. No narcs or nosy neighbors to complain if our songs get too loud or bawdy."

The Throne was silent a long moment with the affirmative from the Requiem. A tense battle of wills happening between two parties that Vella was rather enjoying before she tapped the comm line back to the Requiem.

"Captain will be over in a minute. Had to reconcile with someone not getting to go with her for a trip." Vella chuckled as she took her post while Sasmay was away.

Myunna was wailing behind the locked door as Sasmay pulled on the button down. Muttering curses under her breath after having to free the shirt from beneath the Tukata that was letting her sorrow be known across the ship with physical and mental singing.

Her trip down the hangar quick to keep from having unexpected company as Tremor, Clang, Skitter, and Pop gave her a curious trill at being pushed out of the Termite.

"Sorry boys. No shooting today. Only friendly actions." Sasmay shrugged to the Destroyer droids as one scraped it's leg against the floor in agitation. "Oh quit. You're as bad as Myunna. You can go play with her if you'd rather spend-"

The four droids shifted to ball form and rolled away, taking the exit to engineering rather than towards her room as she cackled at their tucking tail and running.

The Termite spun up, disembarking slowly before cutting a line between the midsection of the ship and angling towards the Requiem. Weapons were powered down but the shields were powered up until she came close enough to approach.

"Docking to begin shortly. I will warn you. I do have a knife in case you have some cheese." She went ahead and cleared the air before the clamping procedure could commence.

Now that, so far as Ashin was concerned, constituted good business. A best-case scenario for the day, really. Much-needed fuel, extraordinarily useful navigation data, and fine liquor with which to reward the fractious inhabitants of her mobile academy.

There was nothing particularly to be gained by sticking around, and that nav data offered an obvious next step. Once the Pomojema's crew had unpacked all the floating offerings and sent them where they needed to go, the big academy ship accelerated into hyperspace. It set a blistering pace, 0.25 rating, down one of the side routes that the Starchaser data had provided.

There had, of course, been various darksiders baying for the blood of these random passersby. In a mobile dark side academy, even an unusually selective one, that kind of animalistic nonsense was typical. What mattered was who held the leash.

-EXEUNT-

The ships in the Outer Rim were always fun to run into… People had so many stories, others had things they were running from and would offer help to keep running. A bit of credits for some maps of the local space? Not a loss for Kaia, as she did gain out of this deal. What she was hoping for is that if the ship got what they needed and left, that she and Ash and the other one, Gray Queen's Throne.

Her ship was busy targeting space rocks, doing some quick scans of the rocks and cataloging what is priority of the more rare metals. Logging that in and using tractor beams to pull the rocks into range for the Dawn's mining lasers to melt them down into the components to take them aboard. The Dawn was towing some of the more valuable rocks closer to the Requiem.

"No problem having some parties. Just doing some house keeping here. Logging what is important. Ash, you good to do some mining as well as party?" She laughed over the comms. Turning to her Sullustan mate, she nodded. "You've got the bridge." Maybe she'd make her way over.
