An Untold Awakening

Objective III ~ Establish a Base

Ruisto greeted me beneath a sky the color of drowned steel, its oceans whispering against the bones of a colony that had long since fallen from prominence.

Once, Mon Calamari engineers and dreamers had raised shining towers here, but now only weather-worn structures and skeletal docks remained, their empty corridors echoing with the ghosts of forgotten ambitions.

As my shuttle descended through curtains of cold mist, I felt the planet studying me in return, as though some vast and slumbering intelligence lurked beneath its black waters.

Beside me stood Mer Hops'in, esteemed member of both the Web of Shadows and the Council of Shadows, his gaze fixed upon the landscape with the calculating patience of a predator.

Together we had come to determine where the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant would plant its banner, and before us lay three possible sites.

The first rested upon a cliff overlooking the northern sea lanes, granting commanding visibility and formidable natural defenses, though violent storms clawed at the coast with enough fury to threaten construction.

The second occupied the ruins of an abandoned colonial district, where existing infrastructure would hasten development, yet its proximity to ancient tunnels and forgotten foundations invited uncertainties that neither survey teams nor scanners could fully explain.

The third lay deep within a mountainous basin, hidden from orbital observation and easily fortified, though its isolation would complicate supply routes and leave its defenders dependent upon a narrow network of passes.

I walked the desolate ground in silence, my boots crunching across stone bleached by centuries of salt and neglect. The Force drifted through the air like cold incense, carrying faint impressions of loss, abandonment, and something older still; something that had watched the rise and decline of Ruisto with patient indifference.

Mer Hops'in spoke little, yet I could sense the gears of strategy turning within his mind as we weighed each location against the needs of the Imperial Remnant. The cliff promised strength but demanded endurance; the colonial ruins offered convenience but concealed shadows beneath shadows; the mountain basin granted secrecy but threatened isolation.

Above us, the heavens darkened as distant thunder rolled across the sea, sounding less like a storm and more like the heartbeat of some colossal entity slumbering beneath the world.

I folded my hands within my sleeves and stared across the dying colony. Wherever the base was raised, it would become more than stone, steel, and soldiers. It would become a monument to Mahporeem ambition, a fortress erected upon the grave of a forgotten age, and Ruisto itself seemed to wait in dreadful anticipation for our decision.

CAPTAIN CHARLES
Ruisto | First Scouting Squadron | Arrival

First Scouting Squadron arrived on schedule as planned. High Command had given considerable freedom on how the mission could be accomplished. This was great for Charles who preferred operational flexibility. Upon arrival he detached four Mini Taskforces each consisting of one Vengeance Class Cruiser and two Bullet Class Frigates to drop Sensor Buoys and form a picket line at the entrances to the system. Luckily there were only two to guard as the third at their rear was already secured by Mahporeem. The rest of the squadron stayed with the Stryker II in orbit above the planet as the MIN Strangler (the Squadron's Interdictor Class Cruiser) activated its gravity well projectors. Its purpose was twofold, providing friendly ships a better hyperspace exit point and forcing potential hostile ships to drop right in front of the Stryker II's main battery where they would be eviscerated by concentrated fire. The Runner Class Fast Transports were on standby ready to ferry supplies to the planet's surface as soon as the ground forces found a suitable location.

They were in high orbit. A necessary precaution due to the orbiting debris from the destroyed shipyards. He would let the follow up forces handle that clean up job. Ruisto was below. It was mostly a terrestrial world with a few small scattered oceans here and there. It honestly reminded him of Castillon, just much duller. He wondered how Jager, Edward and Hannah were doing. He quickly shelved that thought. The mission came first.

"Ferrin, open a channel to R'ayne Asara R'ayne Asara 's team. Ask if she has detected any life forms yet."

"Aye sir," replied his Comms Officer, opening up the channel.

They waited. The hum of the ship and quiet chatter of his crew around him. So far so good, thought Charles, as the operation continued.

Suddenly, the bouys above Ruisto lit up, a single massive ship! No, an entire fleet coming from behind a moon! It was a total of 12 ships, all without Imperial markings all engaging sub-light travel in the sector. They carried banners of an old faction, The Diarchy. It had been some time since anyone had heard from their remnants. Most had scattered to the corners of their territory, to see them this far into the outer rim was unheard of!

Rasha had been traveling the stars for months now, chasing down remnants of The Diarchy's navy, collecting them to her cause. Her travels had brought her too close to Mahporeem, now she was running afoul of an entire Imperial Remnant. Her ships were sufficient for a fight, but her crews less so. They tired of conflict, and a battle with the Mahporeemians would tax them further. If possible, she may try to converse with their commanders, perhaps establish a point of contact.

"This is Admiral Rasha Popova of The Loyal Diarchy Navy! We have no quarrel with the Imperial fleet, our aim is to move through the system and establish an enclave near Ruisto! Have your commander contact me on this frequency."

The message was sent out on an open band to The First Scouting Squadron of the Imperial Fleet. Whether they heeded her words or not, she was not going to budge, they had every claim to this area that the Imperials did! Their mission was to keep the flame of their fleet burning, though an idea did float around in her head. Perhaps they could continue the history of The Diarchy in other ways...

The Diarchs had vanished, and to her knowledge she was the last commander still loyal to them. If an Empire was to die, then let it sow the seeds for something new. She could establish a New Empire starting on Ruisto, the Mahporeemians were an adequate vehicle for her ambitions.

Ruisto | First Scouting Squadron | Contact

Charles was mildly surprised when Ferrin (his Comms Officer) forwarded him the message from the approaching fleet.

"Message from the incoming fleet sir." he said, as he activated the recording.

"This is Admiral Rasha Popova of The Loyal Diarchy Navy! We have no quarrel with the Imperial fleet, our aim is to move through the system and establish an enclave near Ruisto! Have your commander contact me on this frequency."

"Open up a channel." said Charles. "I would like to speak to this Admiral myself."

"Aye sir." replied Ferrin, opening up a channel and stepping back, passing the channel to Charles.

"Good day Admiral. This is Captain Charles, Commander of the First Scouting Squadron of the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant. We have no quarrel with the Diarchy either. Would you like to come aboard my ship to discuss terms. I believe we can accomplish more by cooperating rather than fighting."

He waited. There was nothing to lose by talking. His picket line had already confirmed the fleet's composition and they were stuck in the Strangler's gravity well. If talks didn't work he was fairly confident he could defeat them in battle.

He hoped they didn't have to fight though.

The air inside the staging hangar of the Stryker II was thick with the scent of weapon grease and hyperdrive exhaust. Across the staging areas, the troopers of Mahporeem Special Operations Company Valkyrie's Rampart Platoon moved with automated, military efficiency as they awaited the Operation Orders. As the assaulters of Archer Squad combat teams cleaned and meticulously checked their weapons and packed ammunition and supplies, the rescue medics of Siren Squad were securing pressurized fluid lines to the reinforced frames of their specialized, heavy-duty medical backpacks and verifying that the shock trauma rescue equipment was in good order. Nearby, the heavy weapon elements of Hammer Squad calibrated the magnetic locks on their repeating heavy blasters and grenade launchers, and tested their deployable energy shields, while the marksmen and recon troopers of Specter Squad prepped their long-range scanners. Every set of Valkyrie-class armor bore the unit's uniform: hard, scuffed battleship-gray duraplast accented with bright tactical field-green stripes and deep maroon unit heraldry.

First Lieutenant Orrin Darge stood near the chin-mounted cannons of one of Rampart Platoon's dedicated Lambda B-TIE gunship transports. Overseeing his trooper's preparations, he stood unhelmeted, checking and re-checking the slide mechanism of his G-12 blaster rifle with quiet, measured confidence as his armorweave cape billowed over his shoulder. The calm broke instantly as his wrist comms unit flared with a high-priority, red-coded alert.

"Now hear this. Now hear this. All platoon leaders, flash-override priority. Valkyrie Lead, report to Command Briefing immediately for updated operational directive."

Orrin snapped his carbine's power cell into place, sliding it smoothly into his thigh holster. He didn't waste time. Turning to his staff NCO Sergeant Major Hamish Horvath, his voice was flat and commanding. "Top, get the boys moving to the gunship bay and start loading the birds. Make sure Specter grabs their long-range sweep arrays. Our tasking just changed. Updated OPORD is inbound. Meet me in the briefing room in 5 mikes."

Reporting immediately to the primary briefing room, a vast holographic layout of the dead world Ruisto rotated in a wash of blue light. Captain Charles stood at the head of the map. The tactical focus had shifted heavily inward, integrating the latest surface reconnaissance data relayed back by Lady R'ayne Asara and Mer Hops'in.

"Lieutenant Darge reporting as ordered, sir!" bellowed Orinn. Upon being cleared to enter the briefing room, Darge and Sergeant Major Horvath stood at parade rest before his superior officer and listened attentively, with Orrin marking specific orders and coordinates in his datapad. His attention was turned to the holomap at the center of the room, upon which were displayed three distinct geographical markers along the planet's scarred surface. Orinn was brought up to speed on the initial assessment data provided by Lady Asara's scouting element which had identified three potential sites for the deployment of the Remnant's first Forward Operating Base, and he and his men were tasked with conducting surface reconnaissance and tactical site assessment before the heavy construction assets could drop.

The holomap highlighted the coordinates in sequence. The first site was a high cliffside overlooking the northern sea lanes. It offered strong defilade defenses, but the accompanying meteorological scan data indicated that violent storms struck frequently in the sector. The second area was amidst the ruins of an old colonial district. Its existing infrastructure appeared intact, but the ground-penetrating sonar analysis showed the presence of a sprawling underground tunnel system that was flagged with numerous anomaly markers. The last of Lady Asara's scouted locations was a deep mountain basin, completely isolated and invisible to orbital tracking, but accessible only through narrow passes.

Orrin studied the three configurations, analyzing and briefly discussing the physical constraints of each point with his senior NCO before delivering his assesment to his Commander. "Sir, If we deploy the heavy vanguard into the colonial ruins, we predict those unmapped tunnels would represent a severe perimeter threat. Additionally, the coastal storms in Sector Bravo threaten to swamp our incursion ships unless we incur an unacceptable pre-invasion time delay. It is my assessment that Site Charlie, the mountain basin is the most logical and tactically advantageous staging ground for the erection of the FOB. Key consideration must be given to those narrow passes. They will need to be reconnoitered in force by special forces teams before we route supply lines through them. My Valkyries are just the men for the job."

His chest swelled proudly upon delivering his report to the Captain. "With your permission, sir, Rampart Platoon will deploy immediately and begin ground reconnaissance of the mountain basin. Once we clear those passes and map the terrain establishing secure vectors, we will make contact to signal the all-clear to drop in the Engineering Corps. Until then, we will consider the grid as potentially hostile."

Orrin and Horvath both snapped back to attention and offered a sharp, disciplined salute. "By your leave, Sir!"

CAPTAIN RONHAR TANE, TK-3301
RUISTO, NEUTRAL SPACE
OBJECTIVE II: EXPLORE THE PLANET

The Von Strauss-class Cargo Ship and its Nebulon Fire-class Light Carrier escorts exited hyperspace just outside of Ruisto's atmosphere. They were greeted by quite the assembly of ships: with the Diarchy, the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant and N&Z Umbrella Corporation all being represented.

The Mahporeenian ships were at least easy enough to identify, belonging to the First Scouting Squadron of Captain Charles Captain Charles . The origins of their "guests" were a bit more unclear. While the Diarchian ships would suggest a connection to the former organization, the N&Z Component of their fleet could mean that the ships belonged to nearly anyone who had the credits to afford buying them. Still, no one seemed to be shooting at one another, and it appeared that Charles was in the process of beginning diplomatic talks from the chatter that was going across Mahporeenian channels. The Von Strauss and its escorts continued passed the two fleets, albeit with more than a bit of uncertainty and unease.

Regardless, they were here for one thing: to scout out the features of Ruisto in order to determine if the planet was suitable for establishing Mahporeenian operations. Given the Imperial Remnant's attempts to expand, Mahporeem was more than willing to do business with anyone who would host them, or failing that, to establish a presence of their own. Given what records the Imperial Remnant had access to, it seemed that the native Mon Calamari population had been wiped out some time ago, though their was no telling if anyone else had moved in in the meantime.

The small fleet began to descend toward Ruisto's atmosphere, though they didn't dare go to far in case they were suddenly attacked out of nowhere. From the Von Strauss came a detachment of TIE/ews, which were promptly escorted by a few squadrons of Kodashi Vipers from the accompanying Nebulon Fire-class Light Carriers. Though geared more toward electronic warfare than anything else, the TIE/ews would begin to reveal anything hiding below with their powerful sensors, as the Von Strauss itself begun conducting planetary scans of Rusito itself. Though the Imperial Remnant had some idea of what was down below, they wanted to be absolutely sure before they committed any further resources to its conquest.

For the moment, things moved slowly, as information began to stream into the HUDs and datapads of R'ayne Asara R'ayne Asara , Captain Charles Captain Charles and Orinn Darge Orinn Darge ...

Objective III ~ Establish a Base

I raised my right wrist and pressed two gloved fingers against the cold brass surface of the embedded comlink. The device crackled to life beneath the mournful howl of the mountain winds that drifted through the vast basin before us.

Beside me, Mer Hops'in gazed across the colossal depression in the stone, already envisioning the fortress that would one day claw its way skyward from the ancient rock like a monument to forgotten false gods and idols.

Through the comlink came the voice of
Captain Charles, and I answered him with measured calm.

"Captain, our survey teams have reported unusual activity from the scanners. The readings are experiencing fluctuations that have inspired some concern among the personnel, though the engineering corps remains confident the anomalies pose no threat to construction efforts.

Whatever slumbers beneath these mountains may disturb our instruments, but it does not alter the conclusion. This basin remains our best option."

As I spoke, my eyes wandered across the shadow-draped landscape. The mountains surrounding us stood like cyclopean black teeth jutting from the flesh of the world, their peaks lost beneath a canopy of swirling cloud and unnatural twilight.

Then, through drifting curtains of ash-gray mist, I caught sight of movement several clicks from the proposed construction site. Columns of armored vehicles emerged from the gloom, accompanied by ranks of soldiers whose formation lights glimmered like distant embers beneath the darkened sky.

An expeditionary force had arrived. Their presence appeared almost spectral against the immense wilderness, tiny mortals marching beneath the gaze of indifferent mountains that had endured since ages before recorded memory.

I tapped the comlink once more, severing my connection to Captain Charles and opening a channel to the force commander ( Orinn Darge Orinn Darge ).
"Commander, this is R'ayne Asara. Establish a defensive perimeter around the designated construction zone immediately. Secure all viable access routes leading into the basin and prepare them for the arrival of construction equipment and supply convoys.

I want observation posts positioned along the ridgelines and patrols sweeping the surrounding terrain. Nothing enters this valley without our knowledge, and when you have seen to that, meet me at the foot of the mountain."

The transmission ended, and I lowered my wrist.

Below, the first vehicles continued their descent toward the basin while the mountains loomed silently above them, ancient and watchful, as though some unseen intelligence hidden within the stone observed our arrival and patiently awaited what we would awaken.

Ground Troops Inbound
Ruisto | MIN Stryker II | High Orbit

Charles was waiting for Rasha’s answer when Orinn Darge Orinn Darge stepped onto the bridge. It had been a long time since Charles had seen a Stormtrooper onboard his ship ever since his men had traded in their stormtrooper armor for their new Imperial Marine Armor when Charles received his first command, the MIN Stryker.

Charles and his Marines had little faith in stormtrooper armor or the new generation of stormtroopers from their experience. But they also knew that there were still genuinely elite units out there, the ones who made the word “Stormtrooper” actually mean something. Instead of just an intimidating title. First Lt. Darge and his men were a part of those few elite.

"Lieutenant Darge reporting as ordered, sir!" bellowed Orinn, as he and one of his NCOs stepped onto the bridge.

Charles looked over his shoulder, his crew continuing to work like nothing had happened. He beckoned Voss (his Marine Commander, rank Major), Horton (his Marine Sergeant Major) and Talven (his Logistics Officer, rank Lt. Cmdr.) to come over. They listened to the Lieutenant as he gave his assessment of the situation.

Once we clear those passes and map the terrain establishing secure vectors, we will make contact to signal the all-clear to drop in the Engineering Corps. Until then, we will consider the grid as potentially hostile."

Charles and his Officers looked at each other. It was the logical conclusion and if the Lieutenant was confident his men could get the job done all the better. He wasn’t about to deploy his Marines yet, especially when they were still confirming Admiral Rasha’s intentions.

He returned the salute.

“Very well Lieutenant, you are to deploy to the surface at once. When you have secured the perimeter you are to report back to me so that I can send down supplies.”

“I wish you and your men the best of luck.”

The Effort Continues
Ruisto | Stryker II | High Orbit
Just as the Lieutenant left the room, another communication came in, this time from R'ayne Asara R'ayne Asara .

He replied.

“Excellent work. Continue your operation as planned Lieutenant Darge and his men will arrive shortly. Stand by for their arrival.”

“Oh and Madam, do you prefer being addressed by your name or your title?”

He was genuinely curious. He suspected title, but you never knew. Besides it was the first Force User he actually knew. It would be nice to befriend her.

He looked out at the viewport at Admiral Rasha’s fleet. He hoped they would respond soon.

The heavy blast doors of the primary briefing room hissed shut behind First Lieutenant Orrin Darge, cutting off the low, hum of the Stryker II's command bridge. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Sergeant Major Hamish Horvath, Orrin walked down the industrial steel gantry toward the lift grids, his fingers already flying across his data console to relay the freshly finalized Operation Orders down the chain of command.

"All units, lock it down. We have confirmation from Command. Objective is the deep mountain basin. Strap in, we are going hot."

The comms channel crackled instantly with a secondary, high-priority transmission. The encryption key belonged to the planetside expedition commander, Lady R'ayne Asara, patching a direct frequency straight into Orrin's headset.

Orrin acknowledged Lady Asara's direct orders, confirming the immediate establishment of a defensive perimeter, secure routes, and specialized, high-ground surveillance for the arriving convoy, pledging a hard, special forces screen.

As the turbolift opened, the hangar hummed with activity. Sergeant Major Horvath coordinated the liftoff of Rampart Platoon, directing, in his usual display of practiced, iron-fisted authority, the loading of supplies and pre-drop checklists in preparation for a hostile landing. The platoon acted with swift precision, checking specialized, and in some cases, heavily-armored equipment while preparing their distinctively-marked, battle-scarred gear for immediate action.

Orrin, donned in his tactical, field-hardened armor, walked toward the lead TIE-B class dropship, settling into the cockpit. Following a quick status check, Horvath and the rest of the platoon confirmed they were ready for deployment. With approval, the trio of armored transports disengaged from the Stryker II and descended, plunging into the dark, uncharted mountainous terrain of Ruisto.

Once they were in atmosphere, the high dorsal fins of the three dropships sliced through the swirling ash-gray mist hanging low over the mountain basin. Descending in a tight, fast-moving formation, the armored hulls groaned as their massive maneuvering thrusters fought against the violent mountain wind. Down on the rocky canyon floor, the approach of the expeditionary convoy glimmered faintly like dying embers through the ancient twilight.

The chin-mounted repeating blaster cannons of the lead dropship tracked orange firing lines across the perimeter walls as the heavy landing landing skids slammed onto the dead earth, crushing stone bleached by centuries of salt and neglect.

As the dropships touched down, their ventral drop hatches slammed open almost simultaneously. Out of the pressurized troop bays stepped Rampart, moving with absolute, lethal discipline. Stepping off from lead dropship, Orrin was instantly pummelled by the biting wind as his helmet's visor began immediately cataloging the terrain data downloaded from Lady Asara's initial scans. Behind him, the massive, towering frame of Sergeant Major Hamish Horvath descended, his scuffed gray chest plates bearing the heavy scratches of a dozen campaigns.

"The wind down here is throwing a three-degree variance on our long-range ballistics, Lieutenant," Horvath rumbled, his voice low and raspy through his helmet's vocoder. He tapped a thick, armored finger against his wrist console. "Specter is going to have a hell of a time anchoring their scanner pickets on the north tooth."

Orrin paused, looking up at the jagged black ridges cutting into the twilight sky. "Then we don't rely on the fixed arrays, Top. Have Specter deploy their handheld triangulation spikes. The tech is older, but it'll ignore the atmospheric shear."

Horvath chuckled softly—a harsh, metallic sound over the private squad channel. "Pragmatic as always, sir. The academy didn't completely ruin your common sense."

"The academy taught me how the book says a war is won, Top," Orrin replied, adjusting the sling of his G-22 as he turned to face the hulking SNCO. He kept his tone respectful, grounded, and entirely collaborative. "It's your job to keep us from getting killed when the books turn out to be fiction old man."

Horvath nodded slowly, his posture relaxing into a comfortable, hyper-alert guard stance. "Fair point, boss. Hammer Squad will set up the energy shields at the primary choke points. If anything tries to push through those passes, they'll be running straight into a wall of high-output plasma. Nevertheless Sir, I don't like the look of those cavern anomalies Lady Asara flagged."

"Neither do I," Orrin admitted, his augmented reality overlay tracking the series of erratic, pulsing static spikes along the base of the ruins. "The scanners are fluctuating too much to be natural. I'm gonna want a 3-man medical team from Siren Squad trailing the main convoy, ready to deploy the trauma rigs if we end up in the Druk."

"Consider it done, LT" Horvath stated, crisp and automated. He slammed his fist against his chest plate in a disciplined salute. "I'll monitor the line from the gunship pod. Don't keep the Mother of Monsters waiting, sir. Force users get twitchy when the military is late."

"I intend to be exactly on time, Hamish," Orrin said with a confident smile hidden behind his helmet. "Now get moving."

"Hammer, set the line! Drop those barriers now!"
Lieutenant Orrin Darge's voice boomed across the platoon comms network as he stepped down the ramp, his helmet's polarized crimson visor active.

The heavy weapons troopers of Hammer Squad sprinted into the choke points of the narrow mountain passes. Thwump. Thwump. Multiple Bulwark class deployable thermal shields hissed to life, locking into the bedrock to project vibrant particle barriers across the main entry vectors. Behind them, the heavy repeating blasters were mounted and calibrated, establishing a hard, impenetrable kill zone before the engineering heavy material arrived, and the grenadier prepped his launcher.

"Specter, I want OPs established on the north and south peaks, time now!," Orrin ordered, lifting his G-12 tactical rifle. "1-4, deploy your drone network and get my long guns staged. We need to clear the shadows." The overwatch troopers unclipped and deployed a swarm of palm-sized Seeker-4 reconnaissance drones. The whisper-quiet repulsor orbs shot skyward into the mist, mapping the terrain and feeding real-time tactical overlays directly into the platoon's HUDs. On the ridge-face, the Specter Squad troops melted into the dark crevices of the cyclopean black ridges, keeping the valley floor squarely in their optics.

With the immediate perimeter locked down to Lady Asara's general specifications, Orrin raised a fist, signaling for the squads to begin their combat clearing patrols. If the engineering corps was going to drop their heavy assets here, those unmapped, ancient foundations needed to be thoroughly swept for localized threats.

"Rampart, Hammer, push out into the sector," Orrin commanded, checking the charge on his power cell. "We don't call the all-clear until we've personally cleared the grids. Siren, with me!."

He hadn't taken three steps forward when a sharp, static-laced warning tone cut through the platoon loop.

On the ridge line, Rampart Platoons consoles all violently spiked. The Seeker drones dropped their mapping grids as their sensors automatically re-routed into combat-tracking, filling Orrin's HUD with a series of massive, erratic thermal signatures. Something had flared to life deep within the unmapped cavern cracks along the mountain's edge.

The scanner fluctuations Lady Asara had warned them about suddenly turned real. The dead earth beneath their heavy duraplast boots began to thrum with a heavy, rhythmic vibration. In the dark recesses of the ancient ruins just ahead of the advancing patrol lines, the gray mist violently parted. Multiple unknown contacts were bearing directly towards their positions.

Orrin didn't hesitate. He dropped into a tight firing stance, his voice barking over the squad loop with unshakeable military authority. "OK Rampart, form a tactical wedge! Specter, pull back the drones and start lazing these bogeys. We've got incoming!" As the troopers training instincts kicked in and they formed their various battle positions, Orrin hurriedly relayed the status update to Remnant Command and Lady Asara. He hoped she hadn't met the contacts first.

Squadron Operations
As the ground operations continued, First Scouting Squadron did not remain idle. The squadron had changed its formation from a defensive circle upon arrival to a wedge. The Stryker II formed the point flanked by two mini task forces on each side. Each consisted of a Vengeance Class Cruiser and two Bullet Class Frigates. The Strangler (Interdictor Class Cruiser) and Runner Class Fast Transports remained in position, tucked behind the wedge.

“Ferrin, send a message to the picket task forces led by the Vengeance and Payback to return to the primary formation. Have the other two return the planet and begin positioning for orbital bombardments.” ordered Charles.

“Aye sir.” replied his Comms Officer.

He continued to observe Admiral Popova’s fleet which remained in position. The two fleets maintaining the same distance from each other as they waited for the Admiral’s reply.

“The Von Strauss-class Cargo Ship and its Nebulon Fire-class Light Carrier escorts have arrived sir.” said Castor, his Sensors Officer.

“Good.” replied Charles.

The presence of such a large cargo ship would be ideal for landing operations. He kept his attention on the Diarchy Fleet. The sensor buoys dropped earlier by his picket task forces remained silent. It was a good sign, the less attention the operation gathered the better.

The picket task forces led by the Vengeance and Payback soon returned, their ships forming up slightly above and behind the wedge. It was a squadron classic, it prevented over extension, used all available space and placed the two mini task forces in position to defend the Interdictor. Too many commanders thought in the 2D, Charles was not one of them.

“All ships in position and ready for action sir.” reported Malren (his Tactical Officer).

“Excellent.” replied Charles.
“Have all ships hold position for now. Remember the end goal is not a battle but rather an alliance.”

“Aye sir.” responded Malren, as he returned to his post.

The operation continued smoothly. The ground forces were running into anomalies but he was confident they could handle them.

It was a hard position to be in, the Imperials certainly had a substantial advantage. There was a gravity well generator in the system, as well as an entire war fleet. Rasha scowled for a brief second, she hated seeing control slip past her. For now, the admiral might have to accept that The Imperials were the one who held all the cards.

"So be it captain, expect a shuttle launch from my flagship within the hour..." Rasha then cut the commlink between her carrier and the main Imperial formation.

Despite a cold exterior, Rasha was bubbling with emotion just under the surface. Even as her away team prepared their arms, she felt vulnerable. If these negotiations failed, then the dream of seeing the Diarchy continue died. But she was only one woman a skeleton fleet. How much could she realistically do?

"Ma'am, the security team is ready to get underway! Our meeting with the imperial fleet is on schedule," An armored soldier said before turning back to the assembled squad. His words had pulled Rasha back to reality.

On the shuttle, Rasha looked to the men around her, silently considering her options. Today would decide the fates of many, and she had that power in her hands. These men's lives had been dedicated to the ideals of the twin leaders just as she had. Even in the face of total destruction they remained loyal, and Rasha felt an obligation to deliver these men to some place safe.

Eventually they landed upon the flagship of a potential ally, or a potential enemy. They stood in the hangar, soldiers at attention as Rasha descended the ramp.

Charles received the Admiral with the honors required for an officer of her rank. Marines lined up in perfect formation in front of her shuttle. Company banners hung from standards, armor and weapons gleaming in the light.

Charles stood at the front of the formation waiting to receive the Admiral as soon as she stepped out from her shuttle. A meeting room was already prepared, snacks and drinks already plated.

She arrived with a small security team as expected. The front two squads of Marines left the formation, forming to the flanks and rear of the Admiral and her party. It was a formal security measure. Nothing the Admiral should find offense to.

"Admiral Popova. Welcome aboard the Stryker II. Captain Charles, Mahporeem Imperial Remnant. It is a pleasure to meet you."

With the heavy, howling winds raking through the mountain basin, QS-022 was grateful that her 74-Z had been prepped for all-weather operation prior to deployment. Coasting her bike down the disembarkment ramp of the B-TIE transport that had ferried her down to Ruisto’s surface, the wind struck her crosswise the moment she cleared the ship, forcing her to angle the bike slightly into the gust in order to maintain her heading. She feathered the repulsors to provide direct counter-force against it, holding the bike steady against the shrieking gale.

Deployed as a supporting element of the special forces-led reconnaissance mission, QS-022 anticipated her primary objectives would center around patrol and reconnaissance duties, in addition to providing Rampart Platoon with a more mobile element for rapid response. Thus, for the duration of the operation, she was under the command of R'ayne Asara R'ayne Asara and First Lieutenant Orinn Darge Orinn Darge , neither of whom she had heard of before now.

Such unfamiliarity and disconnection had been her constant companion since her arrival on Mahporeem in the wake of the Imperial Confederation’s collapse. Even so, QS-022 had learned to adapt, to find her place among the scrapper-Imperials by focusing on duty and shared Imperial sentiment.

QS-022 quickly throttled the bike, taking off from the landing zone at speed while the heavy weapon elements of Hammer Squad set a defensive line. However, she let off the throttle, her eyes lighting up with momentary shock. Networked into the platoon’s sensor network, she saw what their drones saw, which included the erratic thermal signatures stirring from the cavern cracks along the edge of the mountain. The picture-in-picture sensor readout in her HUD flickered with fresh contacts, bleeding into the feed like ink spreading across flimsiplast. They had incoming!

QS-022 immediately opened a line to R'ayne Asara R'ayne Asara , her voice steady and clear against the howling wind.

“This is Private QS-022 reporting, attached mobile speeder bike element. I am active and on station.” She paused, her gaze fixated on the growing signatures as they consolidated into distinct targets. “Where do you need me?”

An Untold Awakening

Objective III ~ Establish a Base

The wind coming off the sea carried the taste of salt and sour things as I stood beside Mer Hops'in upon the high ridge overlooking the ocean. Below us, the mountain basin was transforming beneath the relentless efficiency of Imperial occupation.

Dropships descended like iron carrion birds, their engines staining the mist with fire and smoke while columns of troopers established perimeter lines among the stone and ash.

Through my comlink, voices overlapped in a ceaseless current of military precision; supply manifests confirmed, defensive emplacements established, patrol routes assigned. Every order I had issued was unfolding exactly as intended.

Beside me, Mer Hops'in remained silent, his gaze fixed upon the distant horizon where the dark waters met a sky the color of swollen flesh. I studied him for a moment before speaking.

“What is on your mind, old man?” I asked. Without a word, he lifted a hand and gestured toward the vast ocean below. My eyes followed the motion, and understanding came immediately.

The beaches hidden beneath the cliffs.

The coves concealed by mist. The countless possibilities lurking within what others would dismiss as empty coastline. A faint smile crossed my lips.

“That is why I brought you along, Mr. Hops'in. You see potential where others see emptiness.”

I tapped my comlink and opened a secure channel.
“Welcome aboard, QS-022 QS-022 . My associate and I have an idea, but first I require a detailed report of the eastern beaches. Defensive capabilities, potential entry and exit points, hidden approaches, fortifications; give me the usual suspects.”

The acknowledgment had scarcely begun when a sudden tremor rippled through the Force like a diseased heartbeat. A second later the ground itself shuddered beneath my boots.

My head snapped toward the source of the disturbance. Across the basin, beyond the half-shrouded ridge lines, figures were emerging from the mist in unnatural silence, silhouettes becoming shapes, and shapes becoming armed bodies.

At that exact moment Orinn Darge Orinn Darge 's voice burst through my comlink with the sharp edge of combat urgency. I switched channels instantly.
" QS-022 QS-022 , redact that. We have foolishness in the form of annoying little pests. Reinforce Orinn Darge's position immediately. I'll meet you there.”

Another burst of static followed before I keyed directly into Darge's frequency.
" Orinn Darge Orinn Darge , hold the line at all costs.”

I severed the connection and turned back toward Mer Hops'in as the distant thunder of blaster fire began to echo across the basin.

“Check the eastern beach personally,” I said, drawing my cloak tighter as the mist thickened around us. “And watch your ass.”

Ground Update

Holt | Charles’s Executive Officer
Holt was a busy man. Being the Executive Officer of the Stryker II and First Scouting Squadron was not an easy job. Fortunately Charles handled most of the command decisions, but right now he was busy having been sucked into a meeting with an Admiral he knew nothing about.

He was standing at his usual position on the bridge beside the now vacant command chair. The bridge hummed around him, the glow of stations and displays, the low chatter of the crew, all normal.

“Holt, the ground forces are running into trouble. Life forms were detected.” said Ferrin (Comms Officer), looking up from his station.

“Continue to monitor the situation.” he replied. “Castor, are your guys picking up anything?

“Yes, life forms detected, about a hundred of them. Should we notify the ground teams?” said Castor (Sensor Officer), still looking at his display.

“No.” he replied, checking his datapad. “They should have already noticed them by now.”

“Alright.”

The mission continued, even with their Commander busy First Scouting Squadron would get the job done.

The thickening mist that hung low over the deep mountain basin didn't just scatter under the howling winds. It split apart.

Through the tint of his polarized visor, First Lieutenant Darge watched his helmet's augmented reality overlay go entirely chaotic. Specter Squad's overhead Seeker-4 drones had completely dropped their topography mapping routines, having had their tracking logic forcibly re-routed to track and display the massive influx of nearly a hundred erratic bio-signatures which had flared to life across the canyon floor. High on the Stryker II, sensor arrays were already receiving the drone scan data and cataloging the threat, but on the ground, the nightmare was instant.

"Hold the line at all costs," Lady Asara's command crackled through his direct encryption key, cutting through the screeching gale.

"Acknowledged, Ma'am! We are taking up defensinve positions and preparing to engage. Pattern Delta" Orrin snapped back, his voice projecting unshakeable military confidence. He thumbed his comms over to the broader platoon net. "Platoon, form a battle line! Watch your spacing and don't bunch up! Specter, fall back to my position and continue to laze these targets! I want to know where they're moving in real time.

Upon receiving their orders, the entire platoon responded almost in unison. Sgt. Major Horvath ensured each squad found the best possible cover, utilizing what little the austere battlefront provided. Just as they were trained, the heavies in Hammer Squad pushed to the center of the battle line and deployed their Haltbar repeating heavy blasters. In close contact, the grenadier and rocket teams instinctively knew to switch to their carbines and provide cover for the other gunners. To their flanks, the assault troopers of Archer Squad spread out and dug in, careful to avoid presenting too many targets of opportunity to the manic attackers charging directly towards their position. Fully aware of the inherent weaknesses of a platoon line, the young Lieutenant made sure to keep his eyes on the far flanks in case any last minute callouts were needed.

Giving one last rallying cry to his troopers, Orrin keyed the platoon net once more and shouted, "Alright boys, let's show them what MSOC Valkyrie does under fire!"

The historical records from High Command had claimed Ruisto was completely abandoned—a dead rock bombarded to extinction during the Galactic Civil War. Clearly, the history books were wrong.

Erupting from the deep, jagged cavern mouth beneath the ancient black ridges charged a horde of crazed Mon Calamari colonists. Their bulbous eyes were glassy, warped by centuries of isolation, inbreeding, or something far worse lurking in the dark. Screaming unintelligible, frantic war cries, they wielded a patchwork assortment of ancient slugthrowers, corroded mining blasters, and heavy scrap blades.

But despite their chaotic cacoophany of the assault, they weren't fighting like a disorganized mob. Rather, seemed to be hunting in coordinated packs. Worse still, running amidst the vanguard of the crazed colony were more than a few packs of trained Anoobas. The vicious, canine-like desert mammals bounded through the rocky ravines with frightening agility, their varying tones of gray fur bristling as their long claws dug into the bleached stone. Their distinct, pronounced lower jaws clamped open and shut, chin tusks bared to stab any prey that stepped into their path. The appearance of the beasts did not appear to be a coincidence. They were part of the attacking mob, responding to movements in formation as if taking unspoken commands.

The assault was brutal and immediate, but somehow also tactically sound. Before the platoon could fully lock down their firing lines, the lead pack of Anoobas used the low-visibility caused by the mist to divert towards the borders of Rampart's assault element. A grouping of 3 of the massive, growling beasts leapt from an overhanging ledge, artfully dodging the heavy blaster fire and crashed directly into the left flank of Archer Squad's assembled infantry line.

"Contact Left! They're in the wire!" roared a terrified Archer assaulter.

The sheer kinetic force of two of the predators leaping in unison tackled an Archer trooper down into the salt-bleached gravel, their massive jaws tearing violently into the stormtrooper's duraplast thigh plating. Blaster fire erupted in a frantic, close-quarters scramble as Archer 1 and the other assaulters immediately broke ranks to swarm the beasts. The concentrated effort quickly dispatched the two of the Anoobas, but with their focus temporarily shifted, the third was able to slash the feet out from under another trooper a few meters down the line. Rampart Platoon's first casualtyies had been taken. A sharp scream cut through the squad loop as the downed trooper's armor buckled and crimson blood began staining the pale rock floor. Archer 1, an Squad Leader for the assaulters rushed toward the pinned and bleeding trooper and bashed the butt of his G-12 blaster rifle against the lateral side of the raging Anooba's skull, dazing the desert dog and knocking it to its side. The creature yelped loudly, but Archer 1 then immediately silenced it forever by firing a single heavy bolt directly into its bloodied head.

The immediate danger having been neutralized, the squad leader immediately called for a medic to help his wounded troops. "Siren, Archer 1. We have 2 troopers down! Severe lacerations, heavy bleeding! Need immediate triage!"

Seeing the carnage on the flank and immediately noticing the breaks in formation, Orrin yelled out to Sgt. Major Horvath, ordering him to keep the men in the fight. "Damn it Rampart 2, tighten the screen! Get those troopers guns back up". Orrin commanded, raising his own G-12 rifle and firing a hyper-precise, armor-piercing three-round burst that dropped another lunging Anooba just meters from his position. "Hammer Squad, get those repeaters talking! Push these crazies back towards those ruins!". Horvath, the veteran Sgt Major, having faced battles like this since before Orrin was born, had already started issuing the orders his CO had just begun to call out. "Way ahead of you, Sir!", replied Horvath.

Through the chaos, Orrin continued to monitor his tactical display, The men were performing admirably, he thought. Seeing the approach of Private QS-022, he decided to put her to use. "Rampart 1 to Speederbike Element. I need you to reinforce our left flank. We have troopers down. Don't let those things circle back toward the dropships!"

Behind the deployable energy shields, Hammer Squad went hot. The heavy weapons crews immediately initiated talking guns sequence, the deep, thunderous cyclic roar of their NZ/HBR-01A "Haltbar" heavy repeaters chewing into the rock face to suppress the charging Mon Calamari infantry.

Just behind them, Siren Squad's combat medics unslung their sidearms, and rushed down the line through the crossfire to reach the bleeding assaulters. When the rescuers reached them, they immediately dragged the wounded troopers behind a rocky outcrop, their heavy utility packs whirring as they assessed their patients. The shock trauma specialist directed the medical team, calling out "Im seeing deep lacerations to multiple areas, heavy blood loss. This one's going in and out of consciousness. We need to get them stabilized before they can be evacced. The expert medics quickly applied tourniquets where they could and fully emptied the contents of 3 of their aerosolized bacta sprayers before applying pressure dressings and injecting both soldiers with stim shots and additional bacta. Having removed the helmet of the still-conscious assaulter, one of the medics looked straight into his eyes and offered words of reassurance "You're gonna make it trooper. Gonna be just fine. Siren's got you. Just hang tight and let the drugs do their thing. Medevac will be on its way. Your fight is over for today".

The charging enemy force presented a formidable, unyielding threat, a nightmare seemingly born of a forgotten age, but it was an escalation the commandos of Rampart Platoon had been rigorously trained to contain. And they were not about to go down without a fight.

As the first wave of Mon Calamari zealots slammed into the Special Forces line, the basin erupted into a deafening chaos of crimson plasma, flying stone shrapnel, and the feral snarls of predatory monsters.

CAPTAIN RONHAR TANE, TK-3301
RUISTO, NEUTRAL SPACE
OBJECTIVE II: EXPLORE THE PLANET

Though it had brought an impressive complement of ships for this mission, the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant was running into no small amount of trouble conducting its planetary scans of Ruisto.

Specifically, the TIE/ews were struggling to penetrate the cliffs and cave systems that were dotted around the planet, their scanners unable to penetrate through several meters of rock and stone. Though they were able to map out the areas surrounding these obstacles, their remained serious gaps in the Mahporeenian mapping efforts, gaps that would not be filled unless they were explored more closely. Naturally, there was really only one way to do that:

By getting some boots on the ground!

The Von Strauss-class Cargo Ship, having failed to locate any sort of anti-air emplacements, began its final descent onto the surface of the planet, followed closely behind by its Nebulon Fire-class Light Carrier escorts. After a few uneventful minutes, all the Mahporeenian ships had successfully touched down upon the planet, and began unloading their ground forces to get a closer look at the cave systems that the TIE/ews had been unable to map. Several squadrons of Imperial MAVw-SubTer Rovers, PGEM Light Infantry Fighting Vehicles and STR - "Rancors" began rolling out as they made their way toward their respective objectives, intent on delivering their infantry complements to the many cave entrances dotting the landscape so that they could explore them and send the date to all Mahporeenian and allied forces.

Yet from the moment they landed, something seemed amiss, as a thick fog descended over the planet like a smothering blanket. It hadn't been there when the Imperials arrived, and yet it had suddenly showed up out of nowhere, almost as if someone or something was trying to hide their presence from the interloping Imperials.

Almost immediately, the Mahporeenian battle-comms lit up with reports of being attacked!

They seemingly came out of nowhere: hordes of crazed Mon Calamari, back up by an assortment of wild creatures, all intent on removing the Imperial presence from their planet. They charged out of every conceivable cave and crevasse, showing no signs of fear as they charged the heavy transports. Some of them wielded blasters, but most had little more than their bare hands, which they used to tear off armor panels on the advancing APCs and rip apart anyone unlucky enough to be traveling outside the safety of the armored vehicles. Yet their crazed attacks were rather well coordinated for a half insane mob, almost as if their actions were being guided by an outside power.

Whatever was going on, it clearly wasn't good!

Regardless, the armor continued to move forward: some in support of Orinn Darge Orinn Darge , some in support of R'ayne Asara R'ayne Asara and QS-022 QS-022 and some in support of Mahporeenian forces, specifically those currently under the command of one Captain Ronhar Tane Ronhar Tane ...

The small force that greeted Rasha and her men in the hangar of The Stryker II was impressive in its own way. The soldiers moved almost as if they were automata, a fine example of Imperial discipline. Even the Admiral's exacting gaze could find little flaw in their practiced movements. The men stood at attention, their faceplates hiding all facial expression. As she stepped forward, arms behind her back, she looked at each marine.

Rasha's men were a cold and exacting bunch, this team in particular were battle-hardened veterans. They had been hand picked from some of her most trusted soldiers. Most were recruited from the battlefields of Krieg itself, the planet she'd once called home. That felt like a lifetime ago now.

"Likewise Captain, but please do call me Rasha. The Diarchy is no longer, and our admiralty holds no power in this place," Rasha said, a cold and almost solemn note in her deep register. "You say you are from Mahporeem? I have heard very little of that planet."

Rasha didn't say the full truth, she had heard of tale of Mahporeem, but little of that was positive. In her experience people viewed that planet as a backwater covered in slag and oil. To think such a planet could house an Imperial Remnant, that was truly unexpected. For now she would have to hide her disdain for the world of Mahporeem. Even if that was shaping up to be a colossal task.

"Preliminary scans of the system showed many combat vessels. I would assume those were not just yours then?" She questioned the Captain with a small smirk on her face. The existence of potential enemies was good for both of them. Enemies were a necessity for Empires, they made the system work so to speak. It was the grease that kept the wheels turning, the fuel that kept the fires lit in the hearts of men. Without a credible enemy, an Empire had to look inward for its persecutions, something that never ended well...

"Tell me then Captain, what quarry do your men hunt?"
