Now you’re getting it.

Pulling out a datapad, Connel offered it to him. Show me your skill, I want to see what you can do. He wasn’t letting on, or pushing the issue, but there was a direction that Connel was going with this. If the kid was capable in the skill naturally, it meant that there was a natural path for him and this was a natural path in every sense of the word. Show me what you can do, and explain how you do it.

Cartri took the datapad from Connel's hands and casually turned it over, examining the device from every angle before activating it. At first glance, there was nothing particularly remarkable about it. It looked like a standard military datapad, right down to the reinforced casing. The moment he brought up the security interface, however, the difference became obvious.

Layer after layer of security protocols unfolded across the screen, each one protecting the data behind another. Encryption barriers, authorization checks, biometric locks, and redundant fail-safes. Whoever had secured the datapad had clearly gone out of their way to make sure nobody got inside without permission.

Cartri stared at the display for a few seconds before a faint smile crossed his face. "If you want me to do this the easy and fast way…"

He reached into his pocket and pulled out what appeared to be a small USB device, holding it between two fingers.

"I could plug this in and let my encryption decoder have a look at it. Might work, might not. Military grade security isn't exactly known for being friendly." He turned the device over thoughtfully before slipping it back into his pocket. "And don't ask why I carry this everywhere. I feel like that's pretty self explanatory."

Cartri looked down, bringing up the primary security interface. A translucent holographic display immediately projected itself above the device from his HALO suit, filling the air with layers of shifting symbols, security pathways, and encrypted code.

His expression changed.

The casual amusement remained, but his eyes sharpened as he began studying the hologram. Rather than trying to force his way through the defenses, Cartri watched them operate. He followed the flow of the system, examining the way each layer interacted with the next.

"There you are…"

His fingers moved through the projection, expanding different sections of the security architecture. A small portion of the hologram flickered. Cartri immediately isolated it. "That's not supposed to happen." He enlarged the section until lines of unfamiliar code hovered in front of him. With a few quick gestures, he opened another holographic window and began typing directly into it. Code appeared beneath his fingers almost as quickly as he could think, forming and rewriting itself across the transparent display. Cartri wasn't simply guessing at passwords or trying to overpower the security. He was building something specifically designed to exploit the weakness he'd found.

The datapad rejected the first sequence. ACCESS DENIED...

Cartri tilted his head slightly "Alright. So you noticed that."

He made a few quick adjustments to the code, his fingers moving faster across the holographic keyboard. Another section of the security system illuminated as his program tested the defensive layer around it. A second barrier appeared and Cartri grined deviously.

"There's another one."

He redirected his code toward it, taking advantage of the tiny opening he'd discovered before the system could close it. One security layer flickered, then another. The holographic display suddenly filled with cascading symbols as Cartri's program worked its way through the datapad's defenses.

INTRUSION DETECTED.

Cartri's smile widened. "Now we're getting somewhere." His hands flew across the holographic keyboard, rewriting portions of his bypass as the security system adapted. Every time the datapad changed its defenses, Cartri changed his approach with it, spotting vulnerabilities almost as quickly as they appeared.

There was no panic in him. No pressure. This was a test, and as far as Cartri was concerned, it was a rather fun one. "Come on," he muttered, eyes locked on the shifting code. "Show me what you've got."

He entered one final command and for a moment the holographic display froze. Then, one after the other the secuirty features began disappearing and opening up to him like a regular user. By the end, the datapad gave the satisfying chime of ACCESS GRANTED...

Cartri looked up to Connel and smirked slightly before lightly tossing it back to him.

"See? Old fashioned way."

Go for it.

Connel watched everything that Cartri was doing with amazement. The kid was taking his time, clearly with the datapad, but was moving still with the precision of a surgeon, not at all rushed, and not at all sloppy for him.

Yet it was still with blinding speed for anyone else.

The kid was clearly a genius, and had the speed to go with it, and the patience to match it all. He was the type of person that, if he had been born at the right time, would have been one of the leaders of his species, or of the galaxy as a whole, given the right circumstances, or just been the leader of his pack. He had the brain, the speed, and the leadership qualities to go with it, and he had the Force.

Interesting… tell me where you learned that.

"Darkwire. The group that was causing trouble on Denon for a while, back when the Alliance was still kicking," Cartri said. His hand casually lifted to ruffle his hair. "They took me in after one of their members found me on Garos. At the time, I was still living at the orphanage, but they offered me a new purpose after they told me about their mission."

He paused, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

"Safe to say, I don't regret taking them up on it. If I hadn't, I probably wouldn't be standing here talking to you now…" For a moment, the teen's thoughts drifted back to those early days, the late nights, the close calls, and all the good times he'd shared with them before things began to change.

"When I joined, they taught me everything from the ground up. Hacking, survival, even how to fight." He hesitated, his expression softening. "There was a woman who, after a while, took me under her wing. She was the one who really helped shape me into the person I am today."

Cartri took a slow breath, his smile becoming a little more genuine.

" Xan Deesa Xan Deesa was her name. She was pretty much the sister I never had." His gaze lowered for a moment. "Where she is now, I have no idea. But I know she's still out there somewhere, probably still being a pain in the ass to the rich assholes that plague the galaxy."

Slowly folding his arms across his chest, Cartri looked toward his master with a thoughtful expression.

"The only reason I left was because things were starting to get extreme. The group was changing, and not for the better. Last I heard, they'd scaled back their operations and gone further underground. So they're far from being wiped out entirely."

There was one thing about his time with Darkwire that Cartri did regret, though.

Getting involved with the Jedi.

It had started with the train bombing, an operation that had nearly killed the Sword of the Jedi at the time. Looking back, Cartri knew that had been the beginning of the end. That was the moment he'd realized Darkwire wasn't the same group he'd once been inspired to join. The people he'd admired were still there, but the cause had changed. Somewhere along the way, what had once felt like a fight against corruption had become something far more dangerous.

And Cartri hadn't wanted any part of what they'd become.

So, she taught you how to do that?

He sized his Padawan up a little differently than he had in the past, but he still didn't see any outward signs of the Dark side, so he wasn't overly concerned, but he was still thinking about what just happened. I ask because what you were doing looked VERY close to being Mechu Deru… and even I don’t know that skill.

Yes, a Jedi can technically learn Mechu-deru, but the Jedi Order generally discouraged or heavily restricted its use. Because the ability was originally invented by the Sith, it carries a deep association with the dark side. The Sith took Mechu-deru much further by imbuing artificial constructs with dark side energy or using the corrupted sub-discipline Mechu-deru vitae. This advanced dark art allowed Sith alchemists to forcibly reshape living tissue into mechanical parts, creating horrifying cybernetic monsters known as "technobeasts". Fearing that the mental link required to control or manipulate complex artificial minds could backfire or corrupt a Jedi, the High Council heavily restricted the practice. I see. This is good to know, and I’ll keep it in mind for the future, but for now we need to focus on what’s in front of us.
