- The Shahbânu is heavily armoured and armed, and thus good for slugfests. Moreover, it has good speed for a battlecruiser.
- Myriad specialised systems allow it to act as a sector command ship. It features specialised sensors, scanners and communications systems. The incorporation of specialised tech such as a Gemcutter can allow it to detect most cloaked ships that would normally go unnoticed. It can detect hyperspace anomalies, communications, and incoming vessels and quickly relay communications to allied forces. The presence of repair drones allows it to act as a repair hub for allied ships.
- Its potent offensive and defensive capabilities come at a cost. The Shahbânu may be fast for its class, but it is a big, heavy ship and thus has low manoeuvrability. Turning with it is awkward, to say the least.
- The Shahbânu has a far below average hangar capacity for a ship of its size, which means it can deploy less attack and support craft than is common for a battlecruiser. It has formidable defence batteries, but will need escort ships.
The Shahbânu is the first battlecruiser built by Firemane for its own use. The engineering and design teams could draw upon experiences gathered during the construction of the Barsen'thor, a warship Firemane had built for the Silver Sanctum Coalition many years ago. Much has changed since then. Aside from manifold political changes on the galactic map, Firemane is no longer associated with any specific galactic government. The galaxy is, as ever, a bleak place characterised by strife, imperialism, random atrocities and the like. This has apparently not been to the detriment of the galactic economy, judging by the fact that even small startups are capable of constructing large warships and ginormous space stations, so the war economy must be booming.
Of course, Firemane is benefiting from it, too. It is, after all, a megacorp whose primary business is producing and selling armaments as well as hiring out its paramilitary force. It has also acquired some of the trappings of a government and acts like a law unto itself within its sphere of influence. The Kerrigan family business has rather substantial military forces, though these are very dispersed and obviously not on the scale of those of a galactic government. Thus it relies on the training, skill and advanced technology of its troops. The Shahbânu is intended to fill a niche by providing them with a powerful battlecruiser. The battlecruiser derives its name from a Qadiri title of royalty. Siobhan likes to think of herself as a queen, though she wears no crown. She wore a fancy diadem once, but her harem teased her about it.
Due its size and the various doodads that have been incorporated in its design, the Shahbânu has an extremely limited production run. Endowed with powerful defences and armaments as well as myriad support systems, the Shahbânu can take the lead in directing a fleet or local task force. Thus it has a broader role than being a brawler. The warship is not that manoeuvrable and has a lower than average hangar capacity, but it is fast for a ship of its class, improving its ability to keep up with smaller vessels and get out of danger if needs be. The Shahbânu has a powerful array of armaments. Outside of the standard, it has also some more unconventional weapons, such as MetaCannons and energy siphon cannons. Furthermore, the ship has Vortex Cannons, which fire a variety of powerful ordnance. All in all, the Shahbânu has a strong punch and is good at supporting other vessels. A variable missile output system enables it to fire a variety of ordnance.
Moreover, it features powerful sensors and devices that can allow it to detect most cloaked ships, as well as provide early warning against threats, detect hyperspace anomalies and safely relay communications to allied forces. Thus it can transmit strategic data to fleets or warships in different systems or sectors of space, as well as transmitting real-time tactical data throughout a local task force. The incorporation of powerful communications equipment allows it to encrypt and transmit across vast distances. A Battle Analysis Computer further augments its ability to coordinate allied forces. In addition, each battlecruiser has a meditation area for Force-Users.
Internal security measures include marines, auto-turrets, heavy blast doors, ray shields and decompression traps. Rather than an exposed bridge tower, the Shahbânu has an internal CIC-style bridge. The ship features a Colossus Reactor as a secondary hypermatter reactor. This device is able to generate its own power, but can also siphon off and store power from the main reactor during tranquil periods. This gives it a potent reserve. It enables the Colossus to direct the stored energy to special components without diminishing the ship's ability to maintain essential systems such shields, engines or life support. The addition of an ARGH 3-D Printer boosts the ship's recycling capabilities.
