GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Unit Name: Redhand Troopers
  • Affiliation: Gellenbright Securities
  • Classification: Expendable Infantry
  • Description: The Redhand Company is extraordinary in only one regard, its recruitment policy. In place of the usual volunteers, Gellenbright press-gangs pirates, gangsters, and other criminals into service with an offer they can't refuse - a tour of duty or a guaranteed death. It goes without saying that most accept. Once enlisted, a Redhand Trooper leaves in only one of three ways - a body bag, a retirement after surviving a full seven-year tour, or rarest of all an early discharge earned by going above and beyond the call of duty.
COMBAT INFORMATION
  • Unit Size: Medium
  • Unit Availability: Common
  • Unit Experience: Trained, albeit inconsistently.
  • Equipment: Armour or Uniforms; Gatling Blasters, Blaster Rifles, Sonic Carbines, Gauss Pistols, grenades, vibromachetes, etc.
    • Redhand Troopers are frequently pumped full of adrenals and stimulants in combat, including but not limited to Hurricane.
    • Chainchips keep Redhand Troopers subserviently obedient; any attempts at defying their instructions are met with extreme pain.
  • Combat Function: Redhand Troopers are blunt instruments; vicious, selfish fighters with a chronic deficit of honour and the willingness to do whatever it takes to live another day. They hit hard and they don't stop hitting until they drop or are ordered to retreat. Redhands do better in infantry-on-infantry fights but can be outfitted with vehicles or supplemented with armoured divisions if the situation demands it. Given their origins, law-abiding volunteer soldiers tend to dislike them - and commanders tend to sacrifice them. This leads to tense social events.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
  • Victory or Death: Redhand Troopers want to live yet are incapable of retreating or surrendering if ordered otherwise; this encourages grit and persistence, as far as Gellenbright is concerned. Creativity too - nothing like forcing someone into a corner to get them to give it their all.
  • Varied Training: Redhands receive only cursory training after processing; they are expected to learn in battle, despite low survivability.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
What does one do with a serious offender? Hand them over to the proper authorities, if appropriate, but what if there is no proper authority?

Taking a bunch of pirates behind the metaphorical barn was hardly an ideal solution, morally speaking, but interning them 'pro bono' was not much better. Forced labour could work, but droids are harder workers. In the end, it was Commander Vascaldi of CISLO's Anti-Piracy Force, a lucrative client by any standard, who proposed a solution: "Use what little talent they have, namely killing. There is value in expendability."

For legal reasons, future Redhands are always given a choice, namely joining up for a seven-year tour of duty or facing justice. If no authorities are in place to abjudicate, those who refuse are summarily executed. As a result, they are technically not slaves, though they are not actually paid until they earn an honourable discharge. If cybernetics are required due to injuries sustained in battle, the cost is subtracted from their paycheck.

Even with such exceptions, 'retirees' are handsomely compensated. Enough to live an honest life. Of course, few survive to this point.

If former Redhands return to their criminal ways, Gellenbright reserves the right to end their lives and repossess their paycheck.
