Arena Proving Grounds : JEDI Master Vs Apprentice

Objectives:
Students Objectives: The students have two options to succeed in this exercise:
1. Successfully evade and escape from the master and leave the combat zone
OR
2. Strategically subdue the master, preventing them from achieving their objectives until reinforcements arrive.

Teachers Objectives:
  • Challenge the Students: The master's primary goal is to test the students' abilities to either evade capture or subdue their teacher. This involves employing tactics that push the students to use their skills, wit, and teamwork effectively.
  • Tactical Pressure: Apply consistent and escalating pressure on the students to simulate a real-world threat scenario. This could involve setting traps, employing strategic maneuvers to corner or separate the students, and using non-lethal force to simulate combat conditions.

This exercise is designed to hone the students' skills in either escaping from a threat or effectively managing a dangerous situation until help can arrive.

Today was the day many had been waiting for—the announcement of the strategic combative simulation matchups. The event will be streamed live on the holonet, with remote/video drones keeping watch to broadcast each fight for spectators to watch.

With participants from all walks across the galaxy, let's see who will face whom in this test of strategy and skill. Various name plates spin before each section stops. The names and matchups appeared on the screen as follows:
Note: Kaleleon Kaleleon has been determined to have no partner due to his present ranking situation.

Each team will have 5 hours from the commencement of their match to either evade and escape their master or successfully subdue them. The use of non-lethal force is authorized, and strategic objectives must be achieved within the time limit to claim victory.

With the matchups announced and the rules set, the combatants prepared to depart to their respective locations. They are escorted and released with in marked combative zones in their respective environments. Remote drones buzzed to life, ready to stream the events live across the holonet, ensuring that spectators from across the galaxy could watch the unfolding drama.

As she stepped off the transport, she pulled the two padawans she'd be facing aside.

"Hey, yeah. So I'm going to be trying to challenge myself too here. It'll still be a challenge for you guys, of course, but I'm going to put some handicaps for myself. First off-" with a wave of her hand, the threads of her own clothes seemed to stretch out, forming two simple Jedi jumpsuits that seemed to radiate heat. "If you can't regulate your own body heat without thinking about it, put this on. It'll keep you warm. I want your focus to be on the combat part, rather than anything else. I can teach you tapas afterwards.

"Second, I'm going to make a modification to the goals -- I'll treat what counts as 'capturing' me is landing a clean hit on me. That means no blocks, just a raw strike. As you can see, I don't have a lightsaber, but this-" as she struck her forearm, her clothes seemed to ripple out, transforming from a rather plain outfit into something like a roiling sea, a blue-black suit that ebbed and flowed- "can take a hit or two. I won't use lethal force against you, but feel free to use it against me.

"Third, I'm going to add two more smaller things; firstly, for the first four hours I'm going to fend you off. You can take as much time as you'd like to plan and attack, I won't pursue you or anything. Also, I'll allow you to pick where you want me to stay for that time. During that four hours, I won't walk or run. I'll still move, I just won't be using my legs for anything other than standing and landing. At the four hour mark we'll switch, I'll start to pursue you, and you can head back to the designated escape area.

"Any questions? I'm open to any other modifications to the rules."

In time, Auteme found herself sitting in the tundra, awaiting her assailants.

Aris turned his gaze around the cold landscape, studying it for the most part. He was glowing. Literally, of course. For what the world was he had dressed far too lightly, but the subtle red glow his body gave off and the heat with it was evidence enough that he was unbothered by the chill. Though to his surprise they were met almost immediately by their challenge.

He blinked as he stared at Auteme and listened to her words. He waved off the suit, of course. This was training for him as well. He understood what she was getting at. They all needed to train. They all needed to be ready for what was coming. His expression only thinned as she mentioned lethal force. Without a word he brought his foot down onto a frozen rock in a heavy stomp.

It shattered fully.

"You know your defenses best, Master Au- Chancel-" He wasn't sure what to call her, but he continued on regardless. "If this won't hurt you, then I will not hold back." As important as training was, Aris had been training to hold his strength back to keep from any unfortunate accidents when he fought. When he sparred. If he was honest, he was looking forward to being able to not worry about such restraint.

Against the Sith he wouldn't have that luxury anyway.

"What do you think, Konrad?"

They had the advantage of location, of the first attack. Four hours to bring her down. It seemed like too much, but Aris had the distinct feeling this was practicality, not arrogance.

Sitting crossed legged in front of her personally constructed entertainment rig holoscreen, Zaiya sat in comfy clothes, her colorful hair in a messy ponytail at the top of her head, and a series of savory snacks and juice drinks that would make any teenager envious at the lack of parental diet enforcement.

She had two large green and silver Pom poms on her lap - to cheer Aris Noble Aris Noble on - and a little colorful flag she made herself that said ‘ You can do it Aris!’

He may not see the effort she made to cheer him on, but the Lovalla did her best to be present for him and watch the match. She invited others to come join her if they wanted, but if they didn’t have time that was okay; she could have just as much fun cheering by herself as well.

“Oh wow, a frozen tundra?” Zaiya murmured to herself, grabbing a salty and vinegar chip and munching on it. As a Dresh, she was born and suited for brutal winters, so this wouldn’t have been an issue for her. But was Aris used to it? Her worries were for naught; it appeared he was glowing. Was he heating himself up like he did his hand? But did that require him to sustain it? Would he be able to focus on other things?

Hmm. Then there was his partner and opponent.

“Oh this will be interesting…” she told herself taking another chip and munching on it.

Surveying his surroundings with a dissatisfied grunt, Konrad remarked, "Of all places, it had to be snow," clearly unimpressed by the arena choice. However, he acknowledged the purpose behind it—to push them to their limits, preparing for real-life scenarios where favorable conditions weren't guaranteed.

Preferring his own attire over the traditional robes, he politely declined them, focusing on his opponent and fellow teammate's remarks. "Mutual benefit is only fair," he commented, crossing his arms as he half-listened to the conversation while mentally strategizing for the forthcoming challenge.

Turning his attention to his partner, Konrad nodded in agreement. "I'm all for it. If lethal force is on the table without consequences, then count me in," he affirmed, a small smirk forming at the prospect of the forthcoming challenge. Pausing momentarily, he directed his question to his teammate. "So, Aris, any ideas on how we should approach this?"

As the nameplates spun in a randomized order, Myvette had little faith in the sporadic nature of the system. The Force worked in mysterious ways but it wasn't a mystery who she'd be pitted against, Jax Thio was in her future, and...she wasn't afraid.

It was uncharacteristic for sure but Myvette didn't have a tinge of fear going into this. Nervousness, maybe but that was tempered by a sense of excitement. She wanted to face Jax, she hadn't grown significantly in power but in spirit, she had evolved. She could speak...in a way and she'd been given the tools to grab hold of her anxiety and do what must be done. She'd made progress but had a very long way to go. Jax couldn't walk the path for her but he could guide her down the road.

I'll show it to you. What I can do when I'm not afraid.

The transport touched down on the swamp planet with a thud and the loading ramp hissed as it opened. Humid golden light flooded the ramp followed by a heavy buzzing of insects and a symphony of croaking amphibians. Myvette was glad she didn't have physical eyes to be blinded by the sudden shower of light and saddened that she lacked the perception of color to experience the beauty of nature. Due to the climate, Myvette opted to ditch her dress and go for a pair of brown trousers and a sleeveless blue tunic instead.

The swamp posed an immediate danger, there's no telling what kind of wildlife could be lurking inside but...maybe that could work to their advantage. If Myvette knew anything about her master then he wouldn't let them escape the forest without a struggle and he certainly wouldn't go down without a fight. Their chances against him in a straight-up encounter were slim but the Padawan had no intention of fighting fair. After all with two students against one teacher, the odds are meant to be stacked in their favor right?

I'm thinking so tactically but in all honesty, I'd be lying if I told myself I didn't want to rush down Jax at least once. Maybe I'm too eager but that's just how I feel. My partner is some sort of aquatic lifeform so we should have the advantage here. Yeah. Yeah! I don't think we're going to lose here.

Sazo viewed the underground caves with trepidation, standing outside of the mouth of the entrance. The holo-droid circling around didn't ease her mind.Talionis shook with excitement.

She turned to Jalen Kai'el Jalen Kai'el . "I don't like this. Underground caves? Sounds too constrained for fighting. Granted, we are all disadvantaged, but Master Agaburry is a Knight, so we have to assume that's a handicap, but not detrimental. Not sure if we could avoid him in the caves for five hours, but it's probably easier.

"How would you feel about luring him out of the caves?"

A man can change his stars
The Sun baked everything beneath it. Bleaching, sterilizing the ground with such radiation to prevent any kind of growth other than the strongest and hardiest of flora and fauna. The poncho covering all of my chest, keeping the burning rays of the sun off of my skin. Arms tucked into the poncho instead of hanging out. The jumpsuit covering the rest of my body. Hood pulled up to keep my face from burning, and give me some kind of shade to the eyes. As they glanced out ahead of me. The rising "heat" from the ground with the ripping of any moisture from the sand and dirty beneath my feet.

I had already made sure my gear was ready to go before I was dropped off here with Master Caltin. My lightsaber had been dialed back to just cause non-lethal damage. Pretty much just a baton. Of course I also had a practice pistol with me as well. Considering I couldn't carry my 10mm handgun, it was just a stun blaster. My gloves Reaching the ground to inspect the soil.

Coarse, tough, but it was brittle. it would break away into smaller pieces, and fade away much like sand between the fingers. Showing me that the ground would be suitable to be run, but not without a little more effort than just permacrete streets and walkways. Now why would I run? The possibility of being hunted by a Jedi Master who was going to be acting the part of a much more powerful foe than myself. Sure, everyone else had been teamed up with someone else, having an ally or a teammate in which they could rely upon. For me, it was a different deal.

In honest, I was a Knight, yet I had been demoted due to my stint of leaving the Order to fight in a war. I had to prove I could be a Jedi again. So me doing this alone, almost seemed like a Trial of Skill, instead of teaching teamwork.

Reaching into the com system to start the hunt, I would have to find, and then escape Caltin, or outright beat him in a fight. At this moment, I didn't know what I would do, but that would be determined by what was required of me, and how strong Caltin would come at me. The button press sounded off as I spoke into it.

"Ready when you are Master Vanagor."

[Then by all means, come find me.]

This was an intriguing exercise for Padawans, one that frankly the big man wished would have happened back in his day. It was not only a good trial for those who were still learning, but a good lesson in humility for those who don’t think they have anything left to learn. Caltin was already on top of this “mountain” just like any other “Master”, but while he did practice “throwing rope” for those who were trying to climb just like the others, it was good to make them work for it. Now if only he could feel emotions right now, the big man would feel a sense of nostalgia.

This exercise was much like his “first meeting” with past Padawans, he would make them come find him, only able to (barely) sense his aura in the Force. The climate did not bother him, it was of no real difference to that of planets like Kessel, Geonosis, Tatooine, it was hot and disgusting, but not really different. Caltin did not carry a training saber, and he did not alter his own weapons. What he did do was pull the old “Temple Guard” shield of the late “Karki Eusith” down from the wall of his ship (see “Personal Effects). It was made of Phrik, so Caltin did not worry about anything weapon wise. He simply stood there and waited in the cave. The cave where he was inside was not that deep, but it was a maze of tunnels and a place to get out of the sun and enable him to simply loosen up.

The difficult thing Kaleleon would find is the “Force Echo” created by the massive Jedi Master. It was not a true “echo” but an old evasion trick he learned back in the days of evading Inquisitors. Vanagor went about half-way in and then simply backtracked, step for step. It could seem like if Kaleleon were tracking him via trail, he would just “disappear”. One would wonder “Well, couldn’t he just sense Vanagor’s aura?” Yes and no, to maintain the “trail” he could not mask it entirely, but he could leave just enough to sense, but not enough to center on. Now it was just covering himself in the silica that lined the walls to mask his appearance and wait.

"How would you feel about luring him out of the caves?"

"No..."

Jalen crouched down, feeling the force around them. Sazo was thinking about the immediate struggles for a brawl, but this wasn't going to be as simple as coming in swinging. After all, they were both outmatched in physical strength.

"The caves give us the advantage," Jalen stated. "He's already pinned down in one spot. The more mobility he has the better he is. We want to keep him in one spot without getting too close. I'm not sure if you've ever tried to fight a Wookiee in hand-to-hand combat, but it typically doesn't go well."

So, how did they even go about capturing him? Telekinetics seemed to be the best bet. Granted, force users could resist the effects of telekinetics, but with enough effort two people could overwhelm one. In theory, anyways. That was simply a matter of time, effort, and keeping him in the same spot. No doubt the knight would be capable of charging his way out. So Jalen began to familiarize himself with the aura of the cave, feeling the space for loose stones and other things that could be pulled on to block his path.

Auteme sat on the rough ice of the lake. It didn't feel like a battle yet; the two padawans were taking their time, though it was still quite early in the exercise. Sitting on the lake brought no grand strategies to mind -- she had never thought like that, and forcing herself to didn't yield the results she wanted. Break the ice during the fight? A child could come up with that.

But it was not nothing, even if she knew the two padawans were thinking the same thing. Aris and Konrad were not Jedi she knew well; the latter was a complete unknown, the former she knew only as the child of two great Jedi. A child still, of course. She thought back to her time as a Jedi, how she had been in the beginning. The trials she'd been forced through.

Was this a kinder galaxy? When she was sixteen she was fighting Sith. Her friends were on the front lines, beating back the empire, and they wanted to build a galaxy where people so young did not need to shoulder burdens so great. Aris's parents surely had a hand in making him a Jedi; Konrad, she had no idea. Soon enough she pictured them marching off alongside the rest of the Jedi. She could only hope they would return.

She was struck by a pang of guilt. Why was she here? She wanted strength, something she'd never truly sought before. Strength enough to-

She stopped that train of thought. The emotions that Solipsis brought her... they were best not shared here.

In time the padawans approached, and she rose to her feet, awaiting their attack.

Sazo conceded the point to Jalen. Brawling was one way to win- and the least likely, to be honest. But keeping the Wookie in the cave preserved their options.

"Immobilization entails impeding his movement in someway, shape, or fashion- maybe using the environment." Sazo's eyes tracked the holo-droid circling around them, as it streamed the proceedings for the Galaxy to see. Then she looked back, and saw the boy concentrating. With a deep breath, she extended her senses, feeling for life until she saw the bright spot that could only be the Jedi Knight.

"Do you think you've sensed everything you need to? We have five hours, and nobody says we need to spend all of it fighting."

Aris glanced to Konrad, then to Auteme. He didn't answer just yet, more watched as she went to the designated area. There were a couple thoughts running through his mind, but in truth he didn't want to share them where she could overhear. Once they were alone, though? Aris lifted up part of the rock he'd shattered and heated up his palm until the rock itself started to faintly glow.

"She's on the lake, so we're going to take advantage of that. She put the stipulation she wouldn't move from where she was standing, so we break the ice. Then blind her with steam and strike."

The first would likely be expected. The later? Maybe not. Surprise was the only real advantage they'd have over someone with both more skill and experience. "That's my plan, at least. What do you think?"

As he brushed clumps of snow off his jacket sleeve, an amused expression lit up his features at the potential plan. Yet, a hint of doubt crept into his mind, questioning why their opponent had granted them such ample prep time. Despite this, he chose to keep his reservations to himself, pushing the nagging thought aside and refocusing his attention on his partner.

"It looks like you've got the thermal aspect covered with your abilities," he remarked, acknowledging his partner's strengths.

Pausing momentarily, Konrad casually opened up the front of his pilot jacket to reveal a lining filled with an assortment of items: flash bangs, a couple of thermal detonators, his lightsaber, and some smoke grenades. "I think I've got enough gear here to handle the lake... though, please don't ask how I acquired these. It's highly illegal," he added with a wry grin as he closed up the jacket.

Before moving on, he paused once more, contemplating aloud, "Do you think they're recording this event?"

The crack and twist of a juice bottle broke the background noise of the ongoing announcer, who gave details regarding the various locations and who the participants were. Zaiya took a sip of the Geldun Sun Apple juice, swallowing quickly.

"Hmm... Konrad Montrose Konrad Montrose ."
Her colorful head canted to the side. This was the first time she'd seen him. Then again, one can't expect to know everyone at the Jedi Academy, especially when she wasn't even a padawan. The ones she knew were Braze and Loomi, Aris's friends. Did they pair Konrad with Aris on purpose because they knew each other, or was it at random? Food for thought.

They appeared to be discussing strategy and standing close to each other. Then, the holo-camera caught the sight of Aris Noble Aris Noble picking up something off the ground. Once more, she saw his hand turn bright red. What was he doing? Was he melting something in his hand? Unfortunately, the camera didn't get close enough to see. Avid curiosity and a smidgen of frustration raced along her patterns in a colorful wheel.

What was Konrad doing? Why was he unzipping his jacket? It made it seem like he was some Level 1313 corner-bootlegged salesman, showing off whatever he had lining his coat. It didn't show what they were but made Zaiya more curious.

Now for who they were fighting against Auteme Auteme . The name... sounded familiar. Why was that nagging at her?

Grabbing a chip, she brought it to her mouth. Chewing thoughtfully, she grabbed her data tablet and quickly searched for the name. It didn't take long.

"OH MY STARS! That's the Chancellor! Why is she there??!" The startling shock sent waves of rippling glowing hues over Zaiya's skin. It was a black hole of clicking link after link. Wait, she's a Jedi Knight? She used to be in the Order...

Snapping her head up back to the holoscreen, Zaiya was in shock.

Unsure if Aris would even have his comm, Zaiya set her tablet down and reached for hers. She quickly tapped a message over to Aris.

Aris blinked in surprise. Contraband. He'd never seen contraband like this before. Were those.. Those were thermals. He squinted at those before looking to Konrad proper. Was he planning to assassinate the chancellor? No that was being paranoid. Right? He squinted for a moment before shaking his head. ".. Not the thermals. But that other one, that's a flash grenade right? We could take advantage of that. Make it seem like we're chucking ice at her before using that to try and blind her."

Then, his holocom went off. He blinked, glancing down to the screen. There was a brief smile, and even a chuckle, before he tucked it away. He'd answer later, when he wasn't preparing for a fight.

"They are recording. Apparently you look like a flasher."

He wouldn't elaborate as he looked out to the lake in the distance. "Shall we go? .. And can you swim, by chance?"

The Caves

Roughly two kilometers within one of the many caves subterranean tunnels, sat a silver and black wookie, his eyes lay closed and body still in meditation. Though surrounded by the pitch black. He did not need eyes to see. The force was with him. Alive and active it relayed all the information needed for perception and with each breath, exhale and movement of the small creatures within, Grrwunhoooll was given sight. As he lay in wait he let his presence emit like a beacon.

One that stated; Come, I await your challenge.

This particular challenge was risky in the eyes of some of his Jedi peers but how was it any different that the trial he faced when coming to age on his homeworld of Kashyyyk? The Hrrtayyk ceremony. Test of Ascension. The coming of age. Within the darkness and stillness of meditation he could see it now. Memories of the past come to life. It brought a smile to his face and a fire to his belly. Rakktorr. Every male wookie had to learn how to survive for the sake of their own person and the family unit. At tweleve years old Grrwunhoooll not only survived but found his Rakktorr by treking the Ryatt Trail.

There he faced death many times and the risk of slavery by Trandoshans on the dark surface of his homeworld. With each passing memory new faces and creatures came to view. Katarns, Moufs, Minstyngers, Rkkrrkkrl, Crystal snakes, Kkekkrrg rro, Ullers, Giant Webweaver spiders and even a Terentatek to name just the fauna alone. The worst of the challenges were the feral wookies within the Shadowlands itself. Facing a animal that you expected to try to eat you was one thing but to see a fellow brother act like a beast was heartbreaking. Madclaws. That was what Wookie culture called them.

Every wookie had claws. They were tools to be used productively and peacefully. To use them against a living creature or a fellow wookie was to invite shame and dishonor onto yourself and family. All of which were brought to justice and exiled from kashyyyk or banished to the shadowlands. As the memories past Grrwunhoooll exhaled and opened his eyes to the pitch black. Standing to his feet he instinctively set his weapons to their stun setting and head deeper into the cave toward a light in the tunnel. A light that was opposite of the exit.

He would make sure that the padawns selected to face him would indeed find their Rakktorr. Else they would have shame of defeat to one day grow stronger and return. The hunt had begun.

His head tilted slightly as he noticed the other's gaze shifting between him and the items he presented. For a moment, the notion of being mistaken for a maniac or an assassin crossed his mind before fading as the other's words snapped him out of the thought.

"Yeah, that's a flash grenade. Won it off a shady banker in a game of cards... oddly enough, he didn't have any credits," he explained with a wry smile. "I see where you're going with that. Combining it with limited visibility from the steam could definitely throw her off."

A brief frown crossed his features before returning to his usual smirk. "Ah, I had a feeling someone out there was judging me." he remarked, his gaze shifting to scan the surroundings, perhaps searching for hidden cameras. "I suppose we've kept her waiting long enough. I'm pretty confident in my swimming abilities."

"Alright, then.. Don't freeze."

That was the only other concern he had about swimming under the water, but with their plan set he made it to the edge of the frozen lake and stomped a foot. The cracks spread enough for him to kick off a large chunk and reveal the freezing water beneath it. Which he promptly dove into. He swam low, both to keep the glow of his body from lighting up the ice above and to, hopefully, keep Auteme from sensing his approach.

Honestly he had no idea how that worked. Part of him figured she'd know, but he was already committed to the idea.

Once below the designated spot he reached down to lift up one of the rocks there and promptly superheated them as he kicked off the ground to head straight up. As soon as the rocks heated to the needed temp, he unfurled his hands to let the heat spread out into the water. Which would rapidly heat it to the point of steaming and erupted above as he slammed a fist into the ice to shatter it. It was time to kick it all off.

Auteme Auteme | Konrad Montrose Konrad Montrose

"I'll do my best," Konrad replied with a nod.

He unclipped the flash grenade from his jacket, keeping a smoke grenade as a backup. You never knew when it might come in handy. Discarding the flight jacket to avoid getting it wet, Konrad prepared to dive into the freezing water after his partner. However, his dive resembled more of a slip on the ice, resulting in a less graceful entry into the water that certainly woke him up.

Reaching the designated spot for their plan, Konrad paused to allow the ice portion of the plan to unfold before priming the flash grenade. He waited for the opportune moment to execute his part of the plan.
