  • HISTORY

Sazo Vass was born into Ghôsh Vass, in a time of great turmoil and change on Haruun Kal. The clan was simultaneously attempting to unite the squabbling clans in an effort to push out the Balawai interests and Confederate remnants, while fighting under the banner of the Ashlan Crusaders at the height of the Second Great Hyperspace War. Death dogged the footsteps of the Korun during these turbulent times. Sazo was no different, losing her parents at the Battle of Tython. Sazo was just three years old.

Now a nidôsh- "clan-child" or "orphan"- Sazo became a ward of the Ghôsh. While her needs were provided for- never wanting for food, clothing, education, or housing- the expectation was that she excelled in being an instrument of the Ghôsh, subordinating her needs and desires to that of the Herd; for it was expecting that any Korun be strict adherents of the Four Pillars: Honor, Duty, Family, Herd. And of the Vass, she was expected to be an uncompromising adherent to Ashla.

Sazo, a child, was indoctrinated. Groomed to be the perfect Korun- the perfect warrior for Ghôsh Vass, and Akk Rider- as her parents before her. The Akk Riders acts as the household guard, security force, and vanguard of Ghôsh Vass, inspired by the mythical Akk Guard that fought in the Clone Wars.

They were, in other words, the best of the best.

The youths who exhibited combat prowess, loyalty, bravery, and strategic acumen are selected as a Rider. The chosen were to be fostered in the household of their client, receiving first-class education and training, and deployed to fight Bogan in far-flung worlds. Those who returned to Haruun Kal, returned in glory.

Sazo craved that acknowledgment from the clan, above all else. She wanted to be an Akk Rider, like her parents. She threw herself into her studies and her training. She successfully bonded with an akk dog-naming him Jiub, and making it her familiar. The expectation among the elders was that Sazo would soon be selected as an Akk Rider, and contracted out with a cadre of two other Riders. However, everything changed in 897 ABY, with the formation of Haruun Kal's first governing body in centuries: the Al'Har Federation.

With the establishment of the Federation, it was the expectation that all Ghôshs- including and especially Ghôsh Vass- play a role to better Haruun Kal. One of the biggest priorities for the burgeoning Federation was to establish relations with their closest neighbors- the Galactic Alliance. But it was argued that beyond that, closer ties were needed: Ties to their protectors, the Jedi Knights. The Ghôshs balked at the thought of sending their children to live among these secretive monks; it struck too close to home. When Confederacy had invaded Haruun Kal, they often kidnapped children for their Order, the Knights Obsidian. However, the fact remained that this had to happen.

And all eyes turned to Ghôsh Vass. For who else could be a better ambassador of Haruun Kal? Who else had the fortitude, the wisdom, the power become a Jedi but the self-appointed guardians of Haruun Kal?

Thus, the Federation's legislative body, High Council- over the objections of head of state (Lor Pelek) Lehvi Vass Lehvi Vass - decreed that a Vass child would have to be sacrificed, for the sake of political expediency. Thankfully, it didn't have to be anybody important's children. It just so happened that there was a child, a star among her peers, a candidate for the Akk Riders, in Sazo.

Even better: Sazo- a nidôsh- had no benefactors, no guardians, nobody looking out for her best interests. So while her peers parents balked at the request, at the dead of night, Sazo was roused awake, told that she was to join the Jedi Order, and become a Watchman for Haruun Kal, and summarily shipped to Coruscant with little more than the clothes on her back and her akk dog by her side that very night. And Sazo- a scared, 15 year old child- did so, with nary a complaint.

For the honor of the Ghôsh superseded all.
