Mission Outbound Flight: The Jaws of Defeat

BmDm1nz.png

45ElhkA.png

SETUP

Senator Dominic Praxon vanished during the Ssi-Ruuk assault on the Outbound Flight.

Recent intelligence has identified two possible locations where he may be held. Unfortunately, both reports appear credible. With time running short, the Jedi have elected to split their forces and investigate both leads simultaneously.

5TEawXZ.png

Assigned to infiltrate a Ssi-Ruuk sub-orbital station hidden within the storms of a gas giant.

Planet PS-1X03VT is a dead zone. Officially, it is off-limits to the Outbound Flight vessel. The hostile, warmongering Ssi-Ruuk claim this space. Intelligence indicates this is no mere outpost. The enemy runs a dual-purpose operation here: a massive toxic gas mining facility, and a black-site detainment camp.

Your target is Site Aurek. It is a sprawling fortress floating in the planet's dense, toxic upper atmosphere. The base is completely submerged in a sea of sickly green gas. Only its primary communications antenna pierces the cloud layer.

Strike Team Aurek will deploy via low-altitude shuttle drop. The atmosphere is highly lethal. Breathing apparatus must be worn at all times. No exceptions.

This is a lightning strike. Hit hard. Get out fast.

Once any Republic hostages are recovered, signal the shuttle, rendezvous at the extraction point, and blow up the station.

Assignments for this mission are as follows:
SABOTAGE
: Plant thermal detonation charges on primary infrastructure.
RECOVERY: Locate, breach, and extract any Republic personnel.
HOLD THE LINE: Secure and defend the exfiltration point at all costs.

Gi8FjRQ.png

The Ssi-Ruuk are expanding their footprint across this sector. A new planetary asset has been discovered under the designation PS-2R67T8, and it represents a massive escalation in enemy military capability.

This world has been transformed into a massive forward staging ground for future coreward incursions. The enemy is using a vast network of forced labour to process prisoners and fuel a rapid, large-scale war mobilisation.

Your target is Site Besh. It is a colossal skyhook anchored directly to the terrestrial surface. This massive orbital elevator pulls mined resources straight up into the vacuum of space, where the Ssi-Ruuk are using the materials to build a massive shipyard infrastructure.

Strike Team Besh will infiltrate the highest decks of the skyhook facility in low orbit. You will deploy via a stealth transport drop-off outside the perimeter. The team is required to execute a high-risk spacesuit deployment, utilising specialised vacuum thruster packs to cross the void and breach the station's outer hull.

You are the scalpel. If this orbital shipyard becomes fully operational, the Republic faces an empowered foe.

Your team must breach the facility, disrupt the planetary supply chain, and cripple their manufacturing capabilities. Once objectives are secure, liberate the captives, fight your way to the extraction zone, and bring the skyhook down.

Assignments for this mission are as follows:
SABOTAGE
: Sever the skyhook tether mechanism to isolate the shipyard from surface resources.
RECOVERY: Locate, liberate, and extract all Republic prisoners processing through the hub.
HOLD THE LINE: Secure and defend the extraction zone against enemy response.

---

OOC: Each team has 6 participants so you can pair up and fulfill one of the three objectives within the objectives. This should keep posting going at a fairly good rate, as we are not waiting for five other people to reply. Thanks for playing!

MECHANICS

This is a PvE Jedi thread.

For your first three posts, include a roll alongside your post.

At the conclusion of the third round:
  • The team with the highest cumulative total will locate Senator Praxon.
  • The team with the lower cumulative total will discover they have walked into a Ssi-Ruuk trap.

The successful team will move to extraction.

The trapped team will need to fight their way clear before they can withdraw.

OPPOSITION

Participants can expect:
  • Ssi-Ruuk warriors
  • Droid enforcers
  • Entechment powered weaponry
  • Dangerous environments
  • War beasts
  • A surprise

1K8vELB.png

OOC: Make sure you start in media res. No multi posting the approach and preparation for the mission. First post is getting inside and separating to do the assignments, thanks!

The light was red.

Dominic was certain of it. It was red. There...a blink. A stutter in the dark. He had been tracking the intervals for hours. Or weeks. There was no rhythm to it, no predictable cadence, which meant only one thing.

It was a cipher. It had to be.

Someone was broadcasting to him. The realisation did not bring comfort. Instead, it only deepened the woe. If they were hiding the transmission in the emergency strobes, the situation outside was already catastrophic.

Time had lost its edges, dissolving into a singular, suffocating haze. But a politician's mind does not stop spinning just because the world does. Dominic did what he had spent a lifetime doing...he adapted. He analysed. If he could map the anomalies against standard republic military code, he could translate the flickering. He could find the message.

So, Senator Dominic Praxon lay still on the freezing durasteel slab, his eyes wide and bloodshot, desperately decoding the secrets of a completely solid, unblinking blue light.

The stealth-capable transport quickly entered the orbit of PS-2R67T8, piloted by a skilled two-man skeleton crew and occupied by members of Strike Team Besh, who did their best to maintain a swift, precise approach vector primed for a low-orbit EVA drop. Among them, Balun Dashiell stood at the mouth of the cockpit, his eyes scanning ahead for signs of interference from Ssi-Ruuk forces, his mind internalising their mission objectives.

There were six of them, each skilled and capable in their own right, force users one and all. A glance over Balun's shoulder was all it would take to find assurance from the presence of his peers, a vital boost of confidence considering the likely opposition they would face. The skyhook was their target, a possible point of contact for the missing senator, Dominic Praxon Dominic Praxon , a man of influence and value to The High Republic.

The Republic Defence Fleet, Strategic Command, and the Jedi Council had committed to the mission plan. Each of the strike team members had been provided with extravehicular Activity (EVA) suits, clad from head to toe and providing protection against the vacuum of space and lack of oxygen at extreme altitudes.

According to Republic Intelligence, there remained a high likelihood that captives were present within, forced to labour. Strike Team Besh's objectives were threefold: sabotage the goliath facility, rescue and evacuate all Republic personnel, and finally establish a defensive perimeter around their designated extraction zone so the RDF could get them out of harm's way.

The loading bay ramp descended, and Balun Dashiell stepped out among them, taking in a slow, deep breath in anticipation of the trials that lay ahead. Republic Intelligence hadn't been able to provide them with clarity as to the number of hostiles stationed within the Sky Hook, but that the Ssi-Ruuk had erected such a facility suggested all too clearly that they would be outnumbered and foolish to approach the mission loudly. As such, discretion and stealth were their best bet to reach the objective and proceed as far inside the spire before their cover could be blown; Balun figured it was inevitable, the odds were against them, but they still had the Force as an ally, and they were here to rescue their own.

"Alright, time to set to work then..." Balun spoke quietly, more to himself than anyone else. He didn't relish the idea of taking lives, but he had also never shied away from a necessary fight when it was unavoidable. Sadly, his greatest skills lay in combatant abilities, something he had been seeking to rectify, yet they would likely serve him well today.

Gathering his strength and concentration in the Force, he waited for the others to ready themselves while also amping himself up for the daring feat they were about to perform, stepping out from the transport in high-atmos with a death-defying drop towards the orbital platforms of the skyhook.

SNATCH VICTORY FROM…
PS-2R67T8
JEDI SHUTTLE

pHjD5Dp.png

As the Vigilant Reaper dropped out of hyperspace among the Republic fleet, and engaged its stealth system. There was a plan in place, but there was also a distraction too. Connel was on comms with one part of that distraction.

[Are you on?]

[Hitting the deck now… Guns guns guns…] Explosions [Torpedoes away!] Explosions We got what we could. You’re on your own… we’re out of here.

[Copy. Good Hunting.]

Michael Angellus Michael Angellus , with Striker Squadron (or 2 flights of them) hit what they could, but there was still Anti-Aircraft on the other side as well as their own. They had one attack run, they could pull, that was it.

There were 6 Jedi here, all preparing for what’s to come, each getting used to their EVA suits. Connel’s gear was vacuum sealed, he was good. They were all fitted, or being fitted for H.A.L.O. Gear , at the same time, Connel was talking to Bren Alazar. Codename “Michael” of Omega Squad (Connel's name was “Ariel”). Omega Squad was going to insert on the opposite end of the Skyhook and start demo’ing AA emplacements. They were going to make this look like an air assault was in the works, not a stealth insertion. They would jump afterwards.

Putting on the mask
You will feel no remorse for those who would show none to you.
You will feel no fear beyond the fear of failing those behind you.
You will seek no reward beyond mission success.
You will feel no pain until death.
You are not wrath.
You are not vengeance.
You are the Light’s wraith.

Omega Squad had watched this ritual dozens of times. Chrysa,(Connel’s mother once a Sith Lord before her redemption), had woven something strange into the mask. It did not possess him or erase who he was. It simply partitioned the parts of Connel that hesitated. Compassion remained. Doubt did not.

Door! Gabriel, the Team’s second, and the ship’s Loadmaster called for the Loading ramp to drop. Jeremiel, the team’s medic and ship’s Jumpmaster brought the ramp down as Connel looked at the Jedi gathered.

We’re going into a fight. Not a “situation”, a “fight”. This is a part of our life. We signed up for this… He gestured towards the Skyhook. The people taken hostage there didn’t. We’re going in outmanned and outgunned, and expect to fight for every inch, but we can win and we are going to. Our brothers and sisters forming their own collective of “Vanguards” believe we have lost our way. Let’s give them proof we didn’t.

His gear was checked, right now Connel was paying attention. The Reaper was in the middle of moving to drop height, but as Dashiell was talking to someone, Connel was looking out the open loading ramp. Republic Sharpshooters were taking out Ssi-Ruuk Cannoneers and Connel joined in. GREEN LIGHT! JUMP NOW! JUMP NOW!

One by one the silhouettes disappeared into the void.
Then there was only Connel.

He looked once toward the distant Skyhook.

And stepped into nothing.

The horizon was crisp and beautiful, if not cold as a (censored). Their chutes would not open until well below the censor deck.

His boots struck ferrocrete hard enough to jar his knees. The rifle was already shouldered before the impact finished traveling through his body. Two controlled shots. A cannoneer collapsed from the parapet. His bag of explosives slung over his back and a rifle over his front. Taking a moment to launch the UAD Drone it was time to get a layout. So the little device climbed and climbed. Its camera was giving a direct feed to his visor and he could see an entrance.

[ENTRY OPTIONS

A. STARPORT SERVICE ACCESS
Threat: HIGH

B. MAINTENANCE STAIRS

C. WASTE RECLAMATION

Recommendation:
NO OPTIMAL ROUTE DETECTED]

One was in what looked to be some kind of starport, entry through the service area. The next looked to be up several flights of stairs. The third looked to be a sewer system. They were clearly not at an advantageous position, it was almost like someone was messing with them at this point. I’m here to get people out. He dropped the sling of explosives and kicked them over to everyone else. These are just bonus. They were fighting their way into a fortified zone… stealth was not an option here, no matter how hard they wanted to try.

A klaxon wailed across the facility.

Red warning lights flooded the platform.

Ssi-Ruuk voices barked across loudspeakers.

So much for subtlety.

Connel brought the rifle to his shoulder. Move.

This was not where she really wanted to be. Exploring, yes. Pathfinding and wayfinding? Definitely. Helping the others make sure they didn’t jump the damned Outbound Flight into a star? Sure, why not? But getting into a sub-orbital platform with lizard folk? Yeah why did she even sign up for that bit?

More balls than brains, her father would say, not that it really worked for her.

Still, she was a Starchaser, she went anywhere that there was trouble, regardless of her real feelings on it. And they needed the shuttle pilot. But once they got to the station? It got hairy and she felt that she couldn’t just sit there idle and wait for the team. There were Republic folk stuck here and she had a lightsaber. She could show off in the shuttle after they got everyone to safety.

Masks on. That was drilled into her head and she rolled her eyes still with the breathing apparatus. She didn’t like her choices, but as she and Drifter took the Recovery team’s point, she was grateful for it. Her little probot was ahead and already working on downloading any kind of area map and getting a clue as to where they needed to go first.

The shuttle shuddered violently as it plunged deeper into the gas giant’s roiling storms. Toxic clouds whipped past the viewport in sickly green swirls, lightning cracking across the sky like angry veins.

This is not a place for the living, he thought.

The Force here was wrong. Twisted. Beneath the howl of the wind and the groan of the shuttle’s hull, he felt it.

They approached the station, but he could feel how the flow of the Force had been altered. It was a vast, humming drain. He knew the source. Lives leeched away, their energy siphoned to power the station’s systems. Entechment.

Hundreds, maybe thousands of beings reduced to little more than batteries. The raw agony of it pressed against his mental shields, threatening to flood in. He clenched his teeth, forcing calm.

Another violent jolt threw Daxin against the bulkhead. He caught himself, half-smirk hidden behind the mask as he glanced at the rest of the team.

“Rough welcome,” he muttered.

The ramp hissed open. They had arrived. Daxin stepped down into the empty hangar. The weight of the charges on his back was a grim reminder of the mission.

Cora slipped the mask over her face. She adjusted it once, twice, ensuring that the seal held in a way that wasn't entirely too uncomfortable.

Rebreathers were something of a bother to someone who'd come from a world of unpolluted air. The filtration made her feel like she wasn't breathing properly, despite the biometrics proving otherwise. Fortunately, they had a Starchaser at the helm – famed for their clandestine, yet effective piloting.

The probe droid's map was filtering in slowly, piece by piece. "Look at this," Cora pointed to a dark, rectangular shape on the map, voice slightly muffled. "It's the right size for a production unit." Her finger drifted across the holoscreen until it reached a different point in the grainy schematic. "These are larger. Rooms for storage, maybe?"

She looked to Kaia. "We might have better luck splitting up. Half of us plant charges around the facility, and half search for Senator Praxon." Cora glanced to the Zeltron, who'd already began disembarking to scope their immediate surroundings.

Roman never expected to swap the sunny plains of Ukatis for the frozen vacuum of space. One minute he was enjoying the warm weather, and the next he was drafted into a top-secret Republic strike team alongside Corazona von Ascania Corazona von Ascania . Separated during the Strike Team assignments, he now found himself hurtling through the void toward a colossal Ssi-Ruuk skyhook, praying his thruster pack wouldn't fail.

Breaching the hull went far less gracefully than the briefing had promised. Roman slammed hard against the outer deck, his magnetic boots catching the surface with a jaw-rattling thud. Air hissed as he cycled through a pressurized airlock, slicing through the inner hatch with a plasma cutter. The metal buckled, plunging him headfirst into a dark maintenance corridor.

Distant sirens immediately began to wail, painting the cramped hallway in pulsing crimson light. As the point man for Recovery Team, Roman checked his wrist pad, only to watch the stolen schematic flicker and corrupt under heavy enemy jamming. Navigating blind was never part of the plan, but the rhythmic pulse of alarms meant the facility was already on high alert.

Innocent lives were trapped somewhere in this floating fortress, and every passing second eroded their chances of survival. Roman drew his blaster, removed the heavy suit, and forged deeper into the echoing gloom of the station.

Hold the Line

The filtration system in her helmet hissed violently, struggling against the ragged heat of her breath. She had begged to get back into the field. Now, plunging through the upper atmosphere toward a hostile industrial grid, she cursed that desperation. Balun would pay for this.

Two hundred meters. The skyhook rushed up to impact with her.

Thrusters screamed, pivoting her chassis mid-plunge. She braced. The retro-rockets punched against gravity, but the deceleration was brutal. She hit the deck with a bone-shattering crunch. A white-hot shockwave shot up her spine, leaving her knees felling like that of fractured fiberglass.

Pain flared, then vanished beneath a tidal wave of adrenaline, and the Force dulled the ache. Her vision came into sharp focus. Before the dust even settled, her boots moved across the metal grating toward the starboard landing pad.

The air tore open with the shriek of klaxons. Cerys twisted her wrists, and the twin, cerulean blades burst into life. She charged.

The smooth, silvery faceplate of Tatiana's helmet turned in Corazona von Ascania Corazona von Ascania 's direction as the team loosely assembled outside of the shuttle. "I am searching for the Senator." Everyone else was free to choose as they may, but the Jedi Knight had chosen her course long before this mission was even conceived. If destruction became her priority it would be a consequence of actions the Ssi-Ruuk had chosen. And there was nothing that said it had to stop at one station.

Despite having contingency plans readied that might do more than raise eyebrows of someone like Cora, however, darkness did not radiate from Tatiana. If anything, the Force was surprising calm given they were infiltrating a hostile base.

Her faceplate pivoted toward Daxin Veyr Daxin Veyr and Kaia Starchaser Kaia Starchaser before it turned to find Sophelia Ardemark Sophelia Ardemark and Bastila Sal-Soren Bastila Sal-Soren . "We should remain undetected for as long as possible." If they hadn't already been identified on approach. An alarm would only tighten security lines and make retrieving Dominic Praxon Dominic Praxon more difficult. Worse, it could put him at risk. They wouldn't like to see Tatiana if she felt the Senator's life was in peril.

"We should stay in small groups until we have delved deeper into this facility as well." Some might think to go it alone. Tatiana considered it. Before splintering, however, they needed to make sure the area was secure.

Novac's suit was custom made for him, though that didn't make it any less comfortable. He never had a problem with highs but weven this was a bit much for him.

Novac took longer to drop then most so he was a few people land hard, in a attempt to not make the same mistake he used his thruster early and put his tail below him to try and soften the landing. It worked...mostly, it was still a unpleasant landing as he hit the deck. Still wasn't to bad so he thought he did good enough.

Soph was barely a padawan and here she was, on her second mission. It felt like her first was ages ago. And adjusting to everything after Tapani was…hard.

Still.

The young noble squared her thin shoulders and looked to her teammates. Her least favorite activity, flying, was over. Mask sealed around her face. The voices of the others crackled over the comms against her ears and beneath the seal of that mask. She was a healer. She should probably go with the recovery team in case the senator, or others they found, had wounds that needed immediate attention.

“I’m with you,” she nodded to Kaia Starchaser Kaia Starchaser and Tatiana Sah Tatiana Sah . Eyes flickering to the little droid. And then to Daxin Veyr Daxin Veyr snd Bastila Sal-Soren Bastila Sal-Soren . And lastly on Corazona von Ascania Corazona von Ascania .

“Here we go again,” she breathed. Hand falling to the handle of her sonic gun. She would use it only if she had to.

She looked at her droid and rolled her eyes. Maybe it was time to get Drifter a little mind wipe, but the memory he had, the jump coordinates, she couldn’t risk it. Still, the little probe had too much of a personality and was showboating about downloading not only the map, but also past ships that came through the area. Wonderful. “Great, just transfer it to the team and get back here.” She said through the rebreather and mask.

The fact she had to be in the rebreather and mask was not the issue, she was used to being EV anyway. No, it was the way the Force was feeling. Just off. Ssi-Ruuk were supposed to be around this way, she had heard, but after the Planeshift? Nothing was certain.

But they were here to find one of the Senators. She didn’t really care how he got out here, or why, but the challenge was actually getting him home, alive and without his brain turned into lizard stew. Honestly, it was probably more like a sauce. “Yeah, sounds right.” Your grace, she almost said in typical Starchaser fashion but held her tongue. Was everyone on this team a noble?

Her family had standing, at one time, on Corellia, but that was Corellia, and they were pilots and explorers. Wasn’t the same.

“Drifter, can you illuminate the best spots for the charges? And see if you can identify any life forms or entechment… dens? I don’t know, probably something that looks like a dentist office, but with lizard folk.”
Gross lizard folk. With spaghetti noses.

Maybe they should just sacrifice the senator and blast this thing from range.

Lucan wasn't sure how he got himself into this mess, but as some people were liable to say: in for a credit, in for a chit. That being said he didn't quite remember getting any sign-up credits. So if there was no credit for him, he didn't think there would be a chit either.

What a scam.

Space debris hurled around him as his insertion vector put him right behind one Cerys Dyn.

While she was hurtling through space like a brick thrown, Lucan was cheating, by wrapping himself in a tightly-woven sphere of the Force. Using that, he managed to look more like a diver than a boulder rolling down the hill. She landed first, hard, he could practically feel her joints crack and they weren't even his to begin with.

The Jedi Knight came in next, executing a graceful drop himself, skidding along the durasteel as he let go of the Force. His own saber at a ready, he smirked as the Togruta already began to charge.

What, no introductions? His voice piped up in her mind as he followed suit. The klaxons weren't a great sign. This was supposed to be a stealth insertion and things were already going into the wrong direction. He ignited his saber and his surroundings were immediately illuminated with brilliant emerald.

Would be nice to know who I am fighting alongside with...

But snark aside he kept his mouth shut, there were no enemies just yet and Lucan didn't wanna tip them off.

Microfactures repaired themselves as Cerys plunged towards the soon-to-be extraction point. The pain subsided, and just in time. Three security droids, less humanoid in appearance and more akin to quadrupedal mammals, crested the horizon of the Skyhook's outer hull.

Her partner's voice entered her mind. It was characteristically charismatic. Cerys' spine tingled in both annoyance and unapproved curiosity. She ignored him for now.

Instead, she jumped, aided by her jetpack, the spun and rocketed back towards the lead security droid before landing atop the beast-like robot, both blue blades piercing its central core. Its form grew limp beneath her.
Name's Cerys... She said through the Force.

The other two droids took aim, in-built blaster's rising from their backs. The first volley was directed squarely at the Togruta, who promptly deflected the bolts, well...most of them...back towards the left most droid. It sputtered, sparked...and its lights faded. The third though was moments away from setting claw to Togruta flesh.

The feed from the UAD drone flickered across the inside of Connel's visor as it climbed above the surrounding structures. Three routes illuminated one after another, each outlined by SERAPHIM as the tactical AI built a rough map from the limited reconnaissance.

Code:
ENTRY OPTIONS
A: Service Hangar
 Threat Assessment: High
B: Primary Access Stairwell
 Threat Assessment: Very High
C: Maintenance and Motor Pool
 Threat Assessment: Unknown
Recommendation: No optimal route detected.

Connel remained still for a moment, studying the layout rather than the labels. Every fortress had a front door. Every military engineer expected an assault there. Kill zones, overlapping fields of
fire, hardened checkpoints... all exactly where they belonged.

The stairwell wasn't any better. High ground belonged to the defender. His gaze settled on the third option. The motor pool. Logistics. Fuel. Maintenance. Supply elevators. No commander wanted a firefight where his own equipment was stored.

Connel pointed toward the cluster of maintenance buildings.

That way.

There wasn't time for debate, he didn’t wait for whoever was entering with him, Connel just went.

The alarm klaxons were already echoing across the facility.

He moved quickly between cargo containers and parked transports, staying low as blaster bolts began to streak overhead secretly hoping someone was coming. His focus was on what was ahead, so he did not pay attention to the auras of his fellow Jedi right now. A pair of Ssi-Ruuk technicians rounded a corner carrying equipment, only to freeze for a heartbeat before diving for cover as one of the Jedi drove them back with precise shots. The enemy knew they were here now.

Good.

That meant they would be looking in the wrong places.

The maintenance depot came into view. Rows of armored haulers, construction walkers, fuel tenders, and cargo lifters filled the enormous bay beneath the Skyhook's towering superstructure. Overhead cranes crawled lazily along steel rails while lift shafts disappeared upward into the heart of the station itself.

Connel's eyes followed those shafts.

Everything moved through here. Machines. Supplies. Workers. Prisoners.

He unslung the demolition satchel from his shoulder, having dropped all but one charge with the other Jedi.. I'm here to get people out, he said matter-of-factly as he knelt beside a reinforced maintenance access built into the wall. This is just a fun light show for everyone else.

A faint chuckle escaped someone somewhere in earshot.

He never looked up.

Gloved hands worked with practiced precision, magnetic clamps locking a shaped thermal charge against the durasteel. A second, much smaller charge disappeared beneath a nearby fuel distribution manifold. Not enough to ignite the depot. Just enough to make every emergency system in the complex panic at once. Connel rose, backing away from the wall.

Boom Baby. Azrael is missed.

A muted thump rippled through the bay. The shaped charge punched inward with surgical precision, carving a man-sized breach through the reinforced plating. A heartbeat later the second detonation erupted beneath the fuel lines.

Emergency lights instantly bathed the motor pool in crimson. Warning sirens replaced the klaxons. Automatic blast doors began slamming shut throughout the depot as fire suppression systems dumped clouds of white suppressant across rows of vehicles. Cranes ground to a halt. Cargo lifts froze mid-transit.

For a brief, precious moment...

The facility was fighting itself. Connel was already moving through the smoking breach before the echoes faded. Inside, the corridor stretched deeper into the Skyhook. Workshop. Storage. Vehicle maintenance. Lift access. Every door was heavier than the last. Every intersection carried more cameras. Every corridor had more guards than the one before it. He slowed. Not because of uncertainty. Because the pattern had changed.

Connel then crouched beside a fresh set of tracks on the deck plating. Heavy transport carts. Medical trolleys. Food containers. His visor drifted toward a thick blast door at the far end of the corridor. The security measures weren't protecting machinery anymore. They were protecting people. Or keeping them from leaving.

Connel said out loud to no one in particular.

We're close.
Without another word, he raised his rifle and advanced toward the next intersection.

She had been there when they were taken.

She had watched those things tear through every hope she had of reaching Dominic, of reaching Quinn. Afterwards they had told her not to blame herself; that the attack had come too quickly, too violently, that nobody could have changed the outcome.

Perhaps they had been right, yet it changed nothing.

Now she had another chance.

Leaving behind the growing fracture within the Jedi Order, Bastila had ignored every sensible judgement and followed those intent on locating the place where Dominic was being held. News of Quinn remained absent. That concern she kept buried deeper, hidden beneath the discipline expected of a Jedi, where only the Force could hear it.

The Outbound Flight had become a battlefield beneath her blade as she carved a path towards him, only to arrive too late. Whatever lay ahead would simply become another.

In her silence however there was still something else.

A presence lingering at the edge of her awareness. Patient, silent almost predatory. It did not press against her mind or reveal itself through the Force. It merely waited, as though confident the moment it desired had not yet arrived.

Someone nearby spoke of Senator Paxton, of the necessity of recovering one of the Republic's most influential voices.

They were right.

Naboo's own senator carried enormous weight. His capture threatened far more than a single world. But Bastila found little comfort in reducing him to titles and political consequence.

To everyone else this was the recovery of a diplomat stranded deep within hostile territory. To her, it was the chance the Force had denied once already.

So as she maintained her silent vigil across the rest of the group she went over it in her mind again, because this time she would not fail.
