An Untold Awakening

I strode through the wasteland with my cloak trailing like a wound in reality, the stormtroopers advancing in disciplined ranks behind me while my Vharakoth stalked ahead, their immense forms weaving between jagged stone spires and the skeletal remains of long-dead creatures.

The Force churned around us in cold, unseen currents, thick with the echoes of fear, doubt, and pain from the main engagement.

Then the bombardment struck.

A chain of violent detonations erupted off to our right along the Engagement Zone, turning rock and flesh into towering columns of dust and fire.

The ground trembled beneath my boots as the distant screams of the dying carried through the haze.

At once my beloved Vharakoth became restless, their hunger awakened by the scent of slaughter drifting upon the wind and the Force. Their claws scraped against stone, tails lashing, eyes gleaming with predatory delight as they gazed toward the carnage.

A smile crept across my lips. Raising one hand, I gave them leave.
"Have fun, you demented beauties."

The beasts answered with guttural cries that sounded more like the laughter of monsters lurking under beds than living creatures before launching themselves toward the devastation; vanishing into smoke and fire with terrifying speed.

I watched them go for only a moment before turning my attention back to the mission.

"Forward," I commanded. The stormtroopers followed without hesitation as I guided them along the rocky edge of the Engagement Zone.

Broken masonry, collapsed routes, and fields of shattered stone hindered our advance, forcing us over unstable rubble and through narrow gaps carved by centuries of decay and recent violence alike.

Yet with every step the fortified ruins loomed larger, their dark silhouettes clawing at the horizon like the talons of some colossal corpse.

Through the Force I could feel the cultists waiting within, their minds flickering like diseased candles in a crypt. As we neared the outer defenses, I slowed and turned my head just enough for the troopers to hear my voice through the growing thunder of battle.

"When we engage these cultists, show them no mercy. Slaughter them all. Spare no one."

My gaze remained fixed upon the ruins ahead, upon the darkness waiting within.

"That order carries no attached excuses."

Charles | The Bridge | MIN Stryker II:
“Sir, Main Battery is in recovery mode. They will be back online in a few minutes, though I suspect we won’t be needing them anytime soon.” reported Edric, with a chuckle.

“Agreed, the LZ has fallen and is securely within our hands. Enemy casualties are very numerous.” added Malren, looking at the tactical displays with a satisfied smirk.

“Excellent.” he replied, standing up to stretch from his command chair. There wasn’t much the Squadron could do now except wait for the groundforces to take the next objective. The Anti-Air had been silenced, the Central Battlefield was thoroughly demolished (except for some holdouts that the groundforces were currently dealing with). So far everything was going to plan.

“Order the Squadron to stop bombardment and give the gun crews some rest. Remain vigilant of the surrounding space and stand by for further instruction.”

“Aye sir!” they replied. Ferrin was already sending the order to the other 33 ships of First Scouting Squadron.

He walked over to the viewports and leaned against the handrail. What could possibly be worth fighting for in the vaults anyways, he wondered, looking at the planet below. He knew the vaults were the final objective, he just hadn’t been briefed on what was inside.

He thought about bombarding the ruins. There were no civilians and all the cultists probably had were artifacts/tools for their strange and sometimes brutal ceremonies. There was nothing of value there besides information. That was something that could be gathered from the battlefield from prisoners.

In the end, he decided to just wait for orders. If command wanted the artifacts, they would get them. A bombardment would just risk destroying them. He wondered what his wife was up to, last he checked she was in their Quarters taking a nap.

The scorching heat of the fleet's full main battery orbital bombardment was still radiating from the vitrified basalt as Rampart Platoon maintained its high-speed advance across the rugged spine of Ridge-76. Moving in a disciplined, rapid wedge formation, the operators scrambled over the jagged, knife-edged stone, utilizing the low-glint shadows of the basalt shelves to maintain optimal forward momentum through the unforgiving, ash-choked terrain.

Through his helmet's polarized crimson visor, First Lieutenant Orrin Darge tracked the target arrays on his HUD. Specter Squad's overhead Seeker-4 drones continued to mapped the sector, scouting ahead and tracing the path toward Objective Citadel and the sub-surface vault complex.

"Rampart 1, this is Specter 1," the comms squad leader's voice cut cleanly across the private platoon loop. "We're picking up a priority distress beacon on the wide battle net. It's a naval marine element down in the blasted flats. Keying you into the frequency now."

The raw audio burst through the static a second later, tracking the desperate coordinates of the pinned convoy.

"Royal 6 to all friendlies! We've been intercepted on our way to the Sith AA emplacements! I've got wounded men and need supporting fire!"

"Platoon, hold! Tactical halt," Orrin ordered, raising a gauntleted fist. The platoon froze instantly, dropping into low, defensive postures along the basalt ridge lines.

Orrin stepped to the lip of the ridge, bringing up his macrobinoculars to scan the valley floor far below. Down in the trenches, an enemy rocket had struck 2nd Lieutenant Daven Prell's lead transport. Instead of punching directly through the ambush to maintain momentum, the lighter-armored marines had stopped the entire motorized convoy inside the primary kill zone, dismounting into a crater to find cover. As an experienced special forces officer, Orrin knew that stalling a mechanized asset under direct fire was a dangerous tactical error, but the heat of battle was no time to give a lecture.

He tapped his long-range comms link, patching directly into the marines' tactical loop to assess their combat viability before Rampart resumed its push to the vaults.

"Royal 6, this is Rampart 1," Orrin transmitted, his voice calm, steady, and entirely professional over the static-choked loop. "We have eyes on your position from Ridge-76. What is your status, Lieutenant. Do you require assistance, or are your teams intact enough to break the pocket and handle the counter-attack? Either way, I recommend not sticking around to give their rocket team another shot. How copy? Over."

He kept his hand pressed to his helmet, his visor tracking the shifting cult lines across the flats as he waited for Prell's response. Behind him, Sergeant Major Horvath checked the power cells on his G-12 Carbine, keeping his squad operators alert and ready to leapfrog the moment the response was received.

As Orrin waited for Prell's answer, he used the momentary lull to send another update to Stryker Command.

"Command, this is Rampart 1. I have called a temporary tactical halt on Ridge-76 at gridref Aurek 3641 2067. Our comms net just intercepted a priority distress beacon from Royal 6 down in the central flats. The marine convoy has taken an enemy rocket strike and has stalled inside the primary kill zone. Remaining vehicles stopped and dismounted. I am currently patching into the local loop to assess their combat status and casualties. If their frontline element is intact enough to execute their own counter-attack, Rampart Platoon will immediately break the halt and resume our high-speed advance across the ridgeline to support Phase Two at the lower vaults. Will advise. Rampart 1 out."

The warning reached Kaelya through two channels almost simultaneously. First came the harsh override across the Imperial battle net, Lieutenant Darge’s voice cutting through the static with none of the hesitation that usually accompanied danger-close fire.

Then came Captain Krail. “Vossan Actual, this is Talon One. Heavy orbital strike inbound. We are taking cover west of the engagement zone. Hold your position.”

Kaelya’s eyes lifted toward the copper-colored clouds. Around LZ Ashfall, the reaction was immediate. Officers shouted fresh orders. Stormtroopers abandoned exposed positions and pressed themselves behind landed transports, basalt barricades, and anything else substantial enough to offer the illusion of protection. Engineers left half-assembled equipment where it stood. The House Vossan guards did not wait for Kaelya to repeat the warning. Their formation contracted around her, two moving toward the armored flank of the shuttle while the others scanned the landing zone for the nearest depression in the terrain.

One of them gestured sharply. “My lady. There.” A fractured shelf of basalt rose beside the shuttle’s landing strut, its reverse slope dropping into a shallow trench carved by some ancient eruption. Kaelya moved without haste, though she did not mistake composure for invulnerability. She descended into the cut with the guards close behind her, armor scraping stone as they compressed themselves beneath the overhang.

The first beam struck before the last guard had fully lowered himself. Oricon ceased to possess a horizon. White-green light tore through the cloud layer, followed by a force that seemed to lift the world from beneath them. The ground bucked violently. Kaelya planted one hand against the stone as the guards braced around her, shoulders locked against the shaking walls. A second impact landed close enough to split the basalt shelf overhead. Molten fragments rained across their armor, hissing as they struck black plating and rolled into the trench. Then came another. And another.

The bombardment did not resemble artillery. Artillery still allowed the mind to understand distance, trajectory, and survival. This was judgment rendered through machinery. Each strike broke open the volcanic plain, vaporizing positions that had endured centuries of weather and hours of war. Ash was pulled upward in towering columns. The air itself became pressure and heat.

Kaelya closed her eyes. Not in fear. She stretched her awareness outward through the Force and immediately regretted the breadth of what answered. Lives vanished in clusters. Shock became agony, agony became silence, and silence was replaced by the terrified awareness of those left behind. Jedi discipline broke beneath sudden death. Cult fervor collapsed into animal panic. Thousands of thoughts flared and disappeared before they could become prayers. Beneath it all, something within the ruins remained. Still. Watching. The final impact rolled across the landing zone like a receding tide. For several seconds, no one moved.

Kaelya opened her eyes. “Report.” The guards checked one another with practiced efficiency. Armor integrity. Weapons. Communications. One had taken a sharp length of basalt against the shoulder plate, leaving a pale gouge through the House Vossan markings, but his arm still moved freely.

“Guard detail intact,” the senior man answered. “No casualties.”

Kaelya keyed her private channel. “Talon One.” Static answered her. She waited. “Talon One, report.”

A strained voice finally broke through the interference. “Still here, my lady.” Krail sounded as though he were speaking with his jaw clenched. Kaelya heard someone breathing heavily behind him, followed by the scrape of armor against loose stone.

“Condition?”

“Minor injuries. Saren was thrown against the trench wall. Bruised ribs, perhaps fractured. He remains mobile.”

Another voice cut faintly across Krail’s channel. “I remain annoyed, Captain.”

Krail ignored it. “The strike erased most of the central line. We are moving to reassess.”

“Do not rush into the open.”

“Understood.” The communication ended.

Kaelya climbed from the trench as the House Vossan guards emerged around her. What had been visible of the Central Engagement Zone was gone behind a moving wall of ash. The earth continued to groan beneath their boots. In the distance, secondary explosions rolled through positions struck by the fleet, and shattered stone descended from the clouds like black rain.

Then the artillery began. The Mahporeemian batteries added their fire to the ruins of the battlefield, shells and missiles cutting through the haze to punish anything still moving. Kaelya watched the barrage continue without comment. It was excessive only if one assumed the purpose was victory rather than demonstration.

By the time the guns fell silent, LZ Ashfall had resumed breathing. Transports began unloading again. Stormtroopers reformed. Medical teams moved toward the perimeter. Somewhere beyond the haze, blaster fire started anew as Imperial companies advanced to finish what the bombardment had begun.

Kaelya received Krail’s second transmission while checking the seal on Hoshikiba’s left gauntlet. “My lady, we have a route.”

A tactical projection appeared across the inner edge of her visor. The image was imperfect, distorted by interference and terrain newly reshaped by orbital fire, but Krail had marked their position and traced a narrow line eastward. “Explain.”

“The main engagement zone is broken,” Krail said. “Malthera’s forces are moving through the center in strength. Stormtroopers and droids. They are killing survivors and closing the direct approach.” Faint weapons fire sounded behind him. “We observed Asara moving along the left flank before the bombardment. Her creatures have now entered the central wreckage. They are attacking anything they find.”

“Imperial personnel?”

A pause. “They have not approached us.” It was not an answer, and both of them knew it. Krail continued. “Royal 6 has been hit south of our position. Rocket team on an elevated shelf. Their convoy stopped in the flats and dismounted. Rampart has halted on Ridge-76 and is responding.” A new marker appeared on the projection, highlighting the enemy firing position. “We have transmitted the coordinates to both units. Veyran has eyes on the ridge. He believes he can remove one of the spotters if required.”

“No unnecessary engagement,” Kaelya said. “Give them the target. Let the formations assigned to the route destroy it.”

“Yes, my lady.”

The display shifted east. “The bombardment opened an old channel along the northern edge of the left approach. It may have been a drainage trench or service cut beneath the ruins. The entrance was buried before. It is exposed now.”

Krail’s helmet feed flickered briefly onto Kaelya’s visor. She saw a narrow break in the volcanic stone, partially screened by a collapsed basalt column. The trench beyond it descended between steep black walls, scarcely wide enough for two armored soldiers abreast. Ancient masonry protruded through the natural rock farther inside. Cult symbols had been carved into several surfaces, but the markings were weathered and faced away from the main battlefield. “Destination?”

“Specter drones show the channel terminating beneath the western outer wall of the ruin complex. There is a damaged structure at the end. Possibly a maintenance entrance or lower foundation access. Infantry only. No armor. No clear line for heavy weapons.”

“Enemy presence?”

“Two cultists entered after the strike. One was wounded. Neither returned.”

That interested her more than an empty route would have. “And the Vharakoth?”

“Operating south of the channel. For now.”

Kaelya studied the projection. The direct eastern path was becoming an Imperial avenue of advance, crowded with stormtroopers, droids, vehicles, and survivors being hunted through the craters. The southern route was contested by the ambush against Royal 6. Rampart would soon continue along the ridge, bringing special operations troops and breaching equipment toward the same objective. The channel was narrow, concealed, and uncertain. It was precisely what she had sent Krail to find.

“Mark the entrance with an encrypted beacon,” Kaelya ordered. “Leave Veyran overlooking the ambush position until Royal 6 begins moving. He is to observe, not rescue them unless their line collapses.”

“And the rest of us?”

“Enter far enough to confirm the channel is not trapped. No more than fifty meters. Hold there.”

Krail hesitated for only a fraction of a second. “Yes, my lady.”

Kaelya closed the link and turned toward the guards gathered around her. “We move.” There were no questions. The House Vossan contingent reorganized at once. Two guards took the forward positions, rifles raised toward the thinning ash beyond the LZ. Another shifted to Kaelya’s left, carrying a compact sensor package in addition to his weapon. The wounded guard remained in formation despite the damaged shoulder plate, refusing even the brief inspection offered by one of his comrades. They departed Ashfall through its eastern perimeter.

The secured landing zone ended abruptly. Beyond its defensive markers, Oricon had become a landscape remade by violence. The ground rose and fell in fresh craters. Basalt had been melted into glossy black sheets that reflected the distant flashes of weapons fire. Bodies lay half-buried beneath ash, their allegiance sometimes impossible to identify until the guards passed close enough to see armor, robes, or ruined lightsaber hilts. Kaelya did not slow for them.

Isolde Malthera’s advance was visible through breaks in the smoke. Stormtroopers moved in disciplined lines across the central wreckage, battle droids pacing between their formations. Blaster fire came in controlled volleys rather than the frantic exchanges that had defined the battlefield before the strike. A wounded cultist rose from behind a crater lip and managed to lift one hand before several bolts struck him together. Farther away, a Jedi attempted to drag another survivor toward cover. A gunship descended through the haze, its weapons turning both figures into silhouettes beneath a storm of crimson fire.

The Empire had entered the execution phase. A roar rolled from somewhere south of Kaelya’s route. It was too deep for machinery. One of the Vossan guards turned his rifle toward the sound. Through the ash, something immense crossed between two broken stone formations with unnatural speed. A second shape followed it, then a third. Kaelya felt their hunger before she saw the first Vharakoth leap into a crater filled with movement. Screams followed. “Maintain direction,” she ordered.

The guard lowered his aim reluctantly. “They are not ours to control.”

“No,” Kaelya replied. “Which is why you will not give them a reason to notice you.”

They continued north of the creatures’ hunting path, using fractured ridges to break line of sight. The sounds remained behind them, mixed with blaster fire and the guttural cries of predators delighted by an abundance of wounded prey.

The encrypted beacon pulsed on Kaelya’s display several minutes later. Krail had concealed it well. To an unaided eye, the entrance appeared to be nothing more than another split in the rock caused by the bombardment. Only when they drew near did one of the guards identify the narrow shadow beneath a fallen column. A single Vossan soldier waited outside.

Veyran’s place had been taken by another member of the reconnaissance team, his armor coated in ash and one side of his helmet scraped nearly clean of its finish. “My lady.” He lowered his head. “Captain Krail is inside. Saren remains with him.”

“The ambush?”

“Royal 6 is still engaged. Rampart has overwatch. Veyran transmitted a firing solution and remained in observation as ordered.”

Kaelya stepped past him. “Fall in.”

The channel swallowed them quickly. Two guards entered first, moving shoulder to shoulder until the trench narrowed and forced them into single file. Kaelya followed, with the remaining Vossan soldiers spaced behind her to avoid presenting one clustered target. Their helmet lamps remained off. Low-light optics painted the trench in muted tones, revealing scorched masonry beneath layers of volcanic residue. The battlefield noise diminished with every step.

Fifty meters inside, they found Krail crouched beside a section of wall covered in ancient carvings. Saren stood nearby with one arm pressed tightly against his side, his breathing shallow but controlled. Another guard had taken position farther forward, rifle trained on a bend in the channel.

Krail rose. “The passage continues another hundred meters before reaching the foundation,” he reported. “We found signs of recent movement. Blood. Two sets of prints entering. Four sets leaving.”

Kaelya looked toward the darkness beyond the bend. “Different prints?”

“Yes. The returning tracks are bare. Too narrow for the cultists we observed entering.”

“Humanoid?”

“Mostly.”

Kaelya moved to the wall. The carvings were old, but the stone around them carried fresher disturbances. Someone had dragged fingers through the accumulated ash. Not randomly. The lines completed part of the ancient pattern, tracing a symbol hidden beneath centuries of neglect.

Hoshirei’s hilt settled naturally into her hand. Behind her, the guards adjusted their formation without instruction. Krail took position at her right. The sensor-bearer knelt and deployed a compact scanner against the floor. Two guards turned back toward the entrance, establishing a rear security position while the remainder prepared to advance.

Kaelya reached through the Force. The ruins answered. Not with the chaotic suffering of the battlefield or the ravenous impulses of R’ayne’s beasts. This presence was quieter. Deliberate. It moved somewhere beyond the stone like a thought traveling through sleeping flesh. And it had noticed them.

She thumbed Hoshirei’s activation switch. The blade came alive with a sharp snap-hiss, casting the ancient trench in cold light. “Captain Krail,” Kaelya said, her eyes fixed upon the bend ahead, “inform Rampart that we have identified a viable approach to the lower foundations. They are to secure the exterior and hold breaching support in reserve.”

Krail began transmitting.

“Saren returns to the entrance,” she continued. “Two guards with him. No argument.”

The injured man opened his mouth. Kaelya turned her gaze upon him. He closed it again. The selected guards moved to escort him back, leaving the rest to tighten around Kaelya. Rifles settled into firing positions. Kagekiba remained sheathed at her side, ready for the close confines where a lightsaber might prove as dangerous to her own men as to the enemy.

Kaelya lifted Hoshirei toward the dark passage. “The main army may have the road,” she said. “We will take what lies beneath it.” Then House Vossan advanced into the ruins.

An Untold Awakening

I watched from the shadows between two stone monuments as the ruins came alive beneath the thunder of war.

The joint forces of the two Imperial factions descended upon the ancient stones with the merciless precision of a closing vice, blasterfire cutting through the darkness while artillery shook dust and centuries-old masonry from the crumbling heights.

Somewhere beyond the smoke, the last remnants of the cultists undoubtedly clung desperately to their sanctum, screaming prayers to forgotten things that had long since forgotten them.

I cared little for their fate.

Instead, I reached outward through the Force, allowing my consciousness to slip between the cracks of the battlefield, through smoke, blood, and fear, until I felt them.

My little monsters.

Their presence answered mine from the ruins of the burnout Engagement Zone like cold claws scraping across the inside of my mind. Their numbers were fewer now, but what remained pulsed with savage vitality.

I could feel their hunger, their exhaustion, their obedience; and beneath it all, the unmistakable satisfaction of creatures that had performed exactly as they were bred to perform. A smile touched my lips.

{Good children.}

I turned toward the nearest stormtrooper, whose helmet reflected the distant glow of burning debris.
“Nothing makes a mother more proud,” I remarked, my voice carrying with quiet amusement through the din, “than seeing the success of her children.”

I did not wait for an answer.

There was little a stormtrooper could possibly say to that without making the moment awkward, and I had no desire to burden the poor creature with such a philosophical crisis. So, I stepped from between the stone edifices and began walking away, my cloak trailing behind me as the siege continued in my wake.

The cultists would have their judgement soon enough, delivered by Imperial weapons, fire, and perhaps the cold indifference of the Force itself. I, on the other hand, now had more important matters to attend to.

I extended my will once more, calling the surviving Vharakoth back to me. One by one, their presences turned toward their master, answering the summons.

There were other worlds, other enemies, other places where the Empire's fist needed to be felt. And I had every intention of finding somewhere suitable for us to flex a little Imperial muscle.

Rampart Platoon, MSOC "Valkyrie"
Location:
Maneuvering toward Objective Citadel, Ashfall District - Planet Oricon
Commander: First Lieutenant Orrin Darge (Rampart 1)
Tag: SOVCOM SOVCOM Tiber Fel Tiber Fel Captain Charles Captain Charles Ronhar Tane Ronhar Tane Rasha Popova Rasha Popova Kaelya Vossan Kaelya Vossan Isolde Malthera

The frantic static on the wideband battle net shifted down in the valley floor as the tactical vacuum left behind by Rampart Platoon's halt was rapidly backfilled by the rest of the Remnant's unfolding war machine. Fleet dropships and heavy mechanized units had rapidly adjusted their ingress routes, deploying dedicated line squads to suppress the flank and reinforce Royal 6. The trap was being dismantled, handled decisively by the incoming conventional cohorts without forcing Special Forces to compromise their macro tasking.

The clearance down below was all the authorization Orrin needed to terminate their status check.

"Valkyrie Lead, this is Shadow One," the decisive, modulated voice of Captain Krail sliced through the encrypted command channel, his telemetry signature locking onto Darge's HUD. "Vanguard lines are shifting. Sector command has updated your path. Break off from the support-by-fire layout on Ridge-76 and commence approach on the secondary objective. We've marked the new RP on your grids. You are to clear and secure the exterior perimeter at the citadel, and hold your breaching teams in reserve. Shadow One out."

"Shadow One, Rampart 1. Directives received and understood," Orrin snapped back, his tone cool, steady, and dropping seamlessly into direct-action parameters. "Breaking off now. Rampart is Oscar Mike to secure the exterior at RP Fett."

He lowered his hand from his helmet, his gaze snapping back to the dense, black-clad ranks of his platoon. The time for overwatch was over; the Valkyries were getting back in the fight.

"Rampart, go weapons hot! Pack the shields and get on the move!" Orrin ordered, unhooking his carbine and double-checking the levels on its energy cell. "Archer Squad, take point! Hammer, standby with the breaching gear but hold it in reserve on arrival. Specter, keep the Seeker-4 drones tight. We are pushing off the ridge!"

The thirty-one Special Missions Troopers moved out with fluid, silent speed. Abandoning the basalt ledge, the squads scrambled down the reverse slope of Ridge-76, dropping into the jagged, volcanic trenches that zig-zagged directly toward the blackened, massive stones of the Fortress District. They moved at a rapid pace through the swirling copper ash clouds, utilizing the low-glint contours of the terrain to mask their forward signatures as they bypassed the outer infantry skirmishes entirely.

As they closed the distance to the looming vault parameters, the ambient temperature began to plummet—an unnatural, chilling cold that carried the distinct aura of ancient dark-side heresies. Arriving at the outer tier of the Citadel, Archer Squad immediately deployed into a sweeping security configuration, securing the exterior landing platforms and clearing the scattered, retreating cult skirmishers from the courtyard obstacles. The further onto the objective area they pressed, the more uneasy the battlespace became. Darge and his troopers started to see unreadable glyphs seemingly scratched into perimeter walls, unidentifiable foot tracks in the volcanic sand, and even sporadic blood splatter whose source was not immediately obvious.

Orrin knelt behind a stone parapet, his carbine raised as his visor tracked the clearing sweeps. Behind him, Hammer Squad's heavy breachers stacked against the reinforced architecture, weapons at the ready but standing fast as the demolitions experts began to break out and prepare their blasting charges.

"Rampart 2, establish the exterior cordon," Orrin directed Sergeant Major Horvath. "The perimeter is being locked down. Hold the breaching teams in reserve and monitor the main thresholds until Vossan's team arrives."
