WHAT THE FRAK IS THE GALACTIC ALLIANCE?

With all the Republics and Alliances that have existed over the years in both canon and here on Chaos, it can be instinct to assume certain similarities when you spot a modern faction with the same ol’ name. While there will always be some comparisons for factions that are pursuing the same general aesthetic, there are always notable differences too! After spotting some uncertainty and the occasional misinformation here and there, I figured it’s time we toss up an FAQ for the GA 2020.

If you have any other questions, feel free to slap a reply on here, PM me, or message me on Discord (devan#0890). You can also join our faction Discord HERE!

So, without further adieu...

What is this Galactic Alliance?

The short version of this answer is that we’re a lightside-aligned democratic federal republic that combines some elements of the Clone Wars-era Galactic Republic with the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances from Legends. More specifically, we are a representative parliamentary [federal] republic with a Senate that is controlled in-character by our writers. Most of our major political decisions are determined by player-written Senators through debates and votes in our threads, while smaller decisions are determined through OOC polling. On the galactic stage, the Galactic Alliance actively seeks to reinvigorate the Core Region while doing what it can to respond to galactic affairs and to protect the rights and freedoms of all sentient beings.

How was this Galactic Alliance formed?

We are the final product of a hefty merge between two Core World-based major factions: the High Republic and the [Core] Alliance. As our in-character goals aligned more and more, we determined that a merge would be a great opportunity to pool our resources and form a single, stronger faction to see our ambitions fully realized. Over the course of several IRL months and far too many numerous Diplomacy threads, we combined our influence clouds until we were finally able to come together and officially reconstitute the Galactic Alliance. If you’re interested, check out our faction timeline! (All listed dates are subjective).

What are the goals of this Galactic Alliance?

Our short term goal is pretty simple: reunify the Core Region so that we may rebuild these worlds, which have been devastated countless times by war, calamities and ransackings. However, our broader faction goal is to promote and fight for the rights and freedoms of sentient beings, and to stand against the Galaxy’s forces of tyranny and destruction. Out-of-character, our intention with the Galactic Alliance is to provide a member-driven faction that delivers engaging and meaningful content for a wide variety of character types (Jedi, politicians, soldiers, fleeters, judicials, criminals, etc.).

What makes this Galactic Alliance different from other “lightside” factions?

SWRP Chaos has existed for many years. It’s no surprise that countless Republics & Alliances have come and gone, and we can be certain that many more will come and go. Even outside of the various Republics/Alliances, there will always be overlap between factions. This is fine! Although the Galactic Alliance is a lightside-aligned faction (as in, we actively support the Jedi), when it comes to our politics we aim for more of a grey area. Our ultimate goal is to remain the “good guys,” but having a member-controlled government means that some politicians may pursue their own questionable agendas or support terrible acts behind closed doors. We might occasionally choose a lesser evil in order to tackle a greater threat. We strive to be good, but things don’t always work out and we may not always emerge as the beacon of hope we aim to be. It all makes more interesting stories in the end.

What does the Alliance Senate do?

Our member-written Senate is the in-character authority of the faction. Our Senators debate, propose and vote on laws and actions, which can decide anything from supporting a foreign power to allocating significant funds to a major relief effort. At the moment there are 4 major political parties within the Senate: the Populists, Centrists, Corporatists and the Imperial Bloc. These parties all lobby for different directions for the faction, but occasionally agree with one-another. Senators may also choose to be independent, or form their own party, if they’d prefer. With the GA being a Populist administration at the moment, it means that the Senate has most of the federal government’s power. The Chancellor, who is also voted in by the Senate, simply acts as a guide and figurehead of the Galactic Alliance.

What is the New Jedi Order?

Our New Jedi Order is the spiritual successor of the Jedi Order minor faction. It is a young organization that is still carving out its place, but it is the officially supported and funded Order of the Jedi in the Galactic Alliance due to the role it played in helping the faction's founding. Despite this, the GA and the NJO both actively support and encourage cooperation with the other Jedi Orders on the board (notably the Silver Jedi Order). Members of the New Jedi Order are considered normal citizens of the Galactic Alliance, and as such are not granted political or military authority by default. This means that, for example; if a Jedi wanted to command military forces or become a law enforcement officer, they’d have to join the Defense Force or the Alliance Marshals/Sector Rangers and climb its ranks like any other person. While some enjoy the roles of Jedi Guardians and Sentinels, there are plenty in the NJO who prefer to focus on studies and training, or exploring the Galaxy to ignore struggles of civilization. The Alliance does not support conscription, therefore the Jedi of the NJO are not obligated to take part in the socio-political struggles of the Galactic Alliance.

What are Planetary Security Forces?
PSFs are local armed forces and the bulk of the Galactic Alliance’s military might. As a federal republic, the systems of the Galactic Alliance maintain their right to self-govern so long as they do so within the confines of voted federal laws. This also means that the Alliance’s systems maintain their own local armies, navies, etc., which are referred to as Planetary Security Forces. These are each trained and equipped by their local government, meaning they can look and perform quite different across the board. Though PSFs typically deal with their own local issues (patrolling system borders, etc.), they may be called upon in times of conflict or emergency to assemble and serve the Galactic Alliance as its primary fighting force.

What is the Galactic Alliance Defense Force?

The GADF is the much smaller, centralized military of the Galactic Alliance. The primary purpose of the Defense Force is to provide the Alliance with an elite and universally trained & outfitted fighting force that can be utilized against significant threats to the faction as a whole, or to provide cross-sector support within the Alliance without the complications of jurisdiction. The GADF may be dispatched to aid local Planetary Security Forces against domestic threats, or to help our allies & supported causes abroad.

Why the kark is this Galactic Alliance supporting IMPERIALS?!

Please calm down, sir/ma’am. While we acknowledge that imperial superpowers have committed terrible acts across the Galaxy at various points in its history, we don’t believe that Imperialism itself is inherently evil. It's even happened in Legends! The Core Region has seen its fair share of Empires over the millennia. Though many of them have brought tyranny and suffering, some planets have flourished under their rule. It would be easy to disregard that and push for a more utopian Republic vibe, but why not make things more interesting? Naturally, some worlds within the Alliance would be sympathetic to Imperial ideologies. Some of them are even traditionally imperial, just not the same brutal and oppressive ways as the Galactic Empire. Regardless, it’s not all black and white. This stance allows for some disharmony in our political scene and has made for some great conflicts in our Senate so far! For the most part, the Galactic Alliance does its best to judge foreign governments based on their IC actions rather than those from ancient history. At the same time, we are not blind to the past.
To specifically address concerns over the Galactic Alliance’s stance on the New Imperial Order: we formed our military alliance with the Sith-Imperial rebels to have a partner in the fight against the Sith Empire -- a fight which is quite personal for a democratic power based in the Core Region. Considering the devastation the Sith have brought to our worlds in the past, joining this fight made sense for us. Not wanting to put the Sith Empire through tag-team invasion multiple factions, we opted to join in on the ongoing NIO-TSE narrative to make for more communal storytelling.

Why does that one guy always say “ok”?
We don’t know. We think he might need medical attention.
