Hoping to once again corner the market on cheap and yet reliable slugthrowers Hekler'Kok began a new series called their 'Frontier' series. To start off they decided to design a pistol. Like always Hekler'Kok started out with choosing the materials for the design. Instead of using their patented Titanium-Alusteel they decided to use the much cheaper and much more readily available Durasteel for all the metallic components and Plastoid for all the non-metallic components. In order to further keep costs and production times down they used stamping for as many as possible metallic components and 3D printing for the non-metallic components.
After finishing the material choosing and design process they began throwing around the ideas for the cartridge they would use. The original plan was to use the 5.7x28mm cartridge they had used before but they found that it was underpowered and it's armor penetration wasn't really a good quality for the pistol's intended purpose. So instead they chose the 7.62x25mm which had much more stopping power than other cartridges while stilling having a good magazine capacity.
Lastly they needed to decide on the features they would add to the pistol. As always they included reversible controls to allow the user to switch them around based on their dominant hand. They cut serrations into the slide to give a better grip when initially cocking it and textured the grip to give the shooter and better grip overall.
After releasing what they thought would give them a small boost in profit they were surprised when they were inundated with orders beyond their capability. In order to stem the tide of the orders they decided to license the product of the FP-01 to smaller independent companies for a 10% royalty. While this allowed Hekler'Kok to meet demands it also had a unintended consequence. This consequence was that due to the looser selling standards of these independent companies many weapons found their hands into less...savory hands, leading the FP-01 to gain a reputation as a cheap and reliable pistol as well as a reputation for being a criminal's weapon.
