GENERAL INFORMATION
In many ways the Legionnaires of the ESDF resemble the Stormtrooper corps of old, being the backbone of the entire military machine that is the ESDF, with almost seventy-five percent of the entire military machine being supported by this single division stretching part of the ESDF. They are men and women who have chosen to pursue a career in the military after their initial schooling in Eriadu's already very militarized academic system, from which they will be thought in numerous important fields such as tactics, topographics, piloting, shooting and martial arts, even engineering more stringent and restrictive stuf such as military etiquette, equipment maintainance and somewhat obscure stuff as planning and meditation are thought to these fine young men and women in the seperate Training facilities provided to the ESDF.

When they graduate, they will be given their standard equipment sets and can be deployed literally anywhere as they take on the role of both local police forces, security forces for officials, general system security and system border patrols in general, they can thus be deployed from as simple a thing as security to actual navy and army deployments. The best of the best may even advance to more elite corps within the division or even be promoted in what is without a doubt the current most desireable and elite position within the Eriaduan Viceroyalty: The Valkan Guard .

In general, they live the normal soldiers life, with barracks near the two largest cities on Eriadu and near the largest city of Erinar built for those that have no home or property of their own. There are also several facilities specially dedicated since ancient times for Eriadu's military arm that are available for the legionnaires, such as military hospitals, recuperation and rehabilitation facilities and even retirement homes have been planned to be built for these men and women willing to serve not just their system, but the will of their representative ruler.

When it comes to military structure, the Legionnaires follow a similar principle to the aforementioned Valkan guard, but on a much larger scale. Apart from some specialized divisions and internal elite corps, the division is structured as such:

  • 1 Legion of approximately 10.000 men lead by a Centurion Maximus
    • 10 Wings lead by a Centurion Superbus
      • 10 Centuries lead by a Centurion
        • 10 Squads lead by a Decenturion and consisting out of 10 Legionnaires including the Decenturion.
  • The total Number of Legionnaires is around 50.000 men and women regularly

COMBAT INFORMATION: Large | Common
  • Unit Size: Medium
  • Unit Availability: Rare
  • Unit Experience: Veteran
  • Combat Function:
The Legionnaires are the backbone of the entire ESDF and thus stretch over the two major divisions of the organization, with being part of both the army and the navy. However, they also act as the arm of any more localized government, acting as the general police force and as security detail for any important place or government and extragovernment official bar the Viceroy himself, who employs his own guards. They are to be considered the cream of the crop on a general scale, as they are wellrounded and educated over the course in three years to reach a degree of being good jack of all trades in practically every military field. Though there are certainly better pilots, naval officers, tacticians, etc within the military structure of the ESDF, the legionnaires are expected to have a modicum of experience in at the very least every important field to the military machine, though ofcourse the emphasis lies on standard infantry practices.

The Legionairres, being the hammer, the very might in the forms of elite soldiers of the military machine are never in a supporting role, except in cases were one would have to rely on their education as jacks of all trades like par example an extremely large and lengthy naval battle where pilot expenditure is higher than expected. They do however usually get the specific support they need depending on their mission or their duties, like for instance instance military engineers when rooting our planetary based pirates, while in larger battles even the highest ranking Centurion Maximus, who is in charge for a legion of ten thousand men will most likely either be part of a staff of officers or be subservient to a higher ranking officer of note.

The general goal of the Legionnaires is to be the tool to be held behind the back until there is no other option left available.

The Legionnaires tactics and strategems are flexible as the individuals are trained to be flexible, though they do favor heavy assaults and show of force when pressed into battle. However, usually their tactics are solely dependant on the decisions made by army or navy officers that outrank the standard Legionnaire rankings or who have simply been given the authority by the higher ups.[Centurion Maximus, which is the highest rank possible within the Legionnaires' structure is equivalent to the rank of Major]

Strengths:
  • Very flexible force: The high degree of all-encompassing education has made for an entire army of Jack of all trades, making sure that each legionnaire is at the very least capable in one or more fields outside of the standard desired needs for standard infantry.
  • Impressive sight: The arrival of a legion of these men and women decked out in their gear is a sight to behold, able to inspire awe in their allies and fear in their enemies.
  • Superior training: Unlike the stormtroopers of old, these men and women aren't just rushed through academy, military has always been in their life and simply been strongly expanded upon with diligent study and purposeful education. Making them one of the toughest nuts to crack in the galaxy.
Weaknesses:
  • Heavy Standard equipment: Due to the emphasis on heavy and sturdy equipment, these men and women, though fit, strong and fast, won't be able to outrun lighter armored opponents, making them less maneuvrable than for instance a band of pirates.
  • No non-humans: As the entirity of this division is made up out of humans or near humans, they aren't used to dealing with non humans when it comes to fighting, especially when tried and tested tactics may be uneffective.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The ESDF in itself was an evolution of the ever existing security forces of Eriadu, which already provided the system with security in it's entirety for many years with some minor hiccups during a few ages in which it had been under the governance of an exterior force and even then it was capable of handling its own problems. Eriadu's continued philosophy of self reliance had after many centuries brought on itself a somewhat semi militaristic society, where any man of a certain age was to have believed to be at one point either a soldier or a security force member at some point or another, it also gave way to the entire educational system becoming militaristic and every young boy and girl graduating school was technically already taught in the basics of being a soldier.

When eventually the Eriadu system became part of the Confederacy of Independent Systems and Credius Nargath, marquis of the house Nargath had been appointed as Viceroy in 858 BBY, the plans of a large scale military reformation were set in motion. Ever the proponent and advocate of war, strife and conflict, holding within his grasp the keys to an unrivaled military might within the confederacy, in two years time Credius started intensifying the militaristic nature of the education system, expanded the industrial power and output of the system and even managed to use a loophole in confederate law to not just be the viceroy of a single planet, but of an entire planetary system. Now virtually unchecked, after a small verbal skirmish within the viceroyal assembly, Credius enacted his designs in full, reforming all security agencies and forces on Eriadu into a single entity as the ESDF in which he incorporated his own Valkan guard to both add some style and much needed substance.

Armor designs and vehicle designs were run through his own massive industrial conglomorate Nargath & Zanareth Umbrella corporation to equip and outfit this new army, this new defense force as it was "oficially" named. From this ESDF, the Legionnaires were drawn as being the backbone, the elite of the army, a powerful, flexible force which could be deployed on any field and in any situation. With recruits both flooding in from the regular populace and with the now renamed military academy filling in empty spots with eager and enthusiastic graduates, the Legionnaires and the ESDF grew and keeps on growing in number exponentially, with the prognosis stating that the benchmark and absolute goal should be to keep the momentum at around 1% of the entire system's inhabitants to be part of the ESDF in one capacity of another, with at all times 50.000 of them as Legionnaires.

This is a Common/Large unit. Per the template, a Common/Large unit can only use Mass Produced equipment.

View attachment 323

Limited production:

Minor production:
So you must either remove these pieces of equipment or lower the Availability and/or Size rating.

  • The total Number of Legionnaires is around 5.000.000 men and women regularly with 7.500.000 men and women at it's peak [this includes all elite and special squads and divisions within the legionnaires, reserves and recalled veterans]

The NPC Unit Template is not supposed to be used for entire armies. It covers units within them. For the sake of comparison, the People's Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China, which is regarded as the largest military force on Earth, has about 2 million active duty soldiers, along with 510 000 reservists and 660 000 paramilitaries.

So if you intend to do a submission that covers all Legionnaires, this is not the right template. The proper template for an Army submission is here.

Ok, that works.

'COMBAT INFORMATION: Large | Common'

Per the edits, this is now a Rare/Medium unit.

So please remove ' Large | Common' here.

These numbers are better and Rare/Medium allows you to use all your gear, but ten thousand soldiers per combat unit does not really sound Medium. Codex does not really use hard and fast numbers, but Medium is generally more like a few Companies/Battalions (for comparison, in most real world militaries 50 thousand soldiers is about the size of an army corps and 10 thousand soldiers are an army division). Something on the level you're using right now is more like Large.
  • Unit Size: [ This is how many individuals make up a single unit. Choose from Small (each unit is small, comprising a dozen members or less), Medium (moderately sized units, often specialized), Large (many individuals, often compromising the rank and file). ]
  • Unit Availability: [ This is how many units are available for deployment. Choose from Unique (only one), Rare (very few, difficult to replace, may have long training times), Uncommon (some, replaceable, enough to support), Common (many, easy to replace, likely with more always in training). ]
I'd recommend simply dispensing with hard numbers. If you want to use hard numbers, it should be closer to what the Template says. You can always do an Army sub that covers the entirety of Eriadu's army, using the template I linked earlier. Or a more generic Common/Large submission that serves as a baseline, with this unit being the Elite of it.

I did not notice this during my first read, but while second link leads me to the image on the left (the one with the black-clad troopers), I need a source link for the other pic (the soldiers on parade).

I believe it's from Killzone, so you can just link the game's website.

Elpsis Kerrigan Elpsis Kerrigan just archive it, this is becoming too much of hassle (a(lso sidenote, using real world figures doesn't help, eriadu has 22 billion inhabitants, so that's not really comparable. So for future reference I think it is best you don't use IRL examples to compare, lol)

Credius Credius

Real world figures have their limits, but they're the best method of comparison we can draw upon since none of us live in a universe with faster-than-light travel and galactic governments.

Likewise, per Codex rules only major factions can field large armies/fleets and this unit is solely affiliated with your character. So while Eriadu has that many inhabitants, your character would not be able to have a massive army. Something to note for future reference.

Regardless, archiving submission at request of the submitter. If you wish to have the submission removed from the archives, please contact a member of codex staff.
