Bring Back Peer Ranking with FU's/Company Tiers

Ladies and Gents,

Been here awhile, and I remember back in the day when you got your Master Tag, or even more recently if your Company got to Tier 6 it actually meant something. It felt like an accomplishment.

It gave you a goal to write towards, as well as acting as a check and balance to make sure you were a reputable member whom actually put effort into your writing, before you slapped on the Master/Tier 6 tag.

In short, it created more scenarios where folks actually RP'ed together for the sake of char dev. This created scenarios where characters had a more rich history of teachers and pupils and old friends.

I feel nowadays, anyone can slap on the Master tag, and just get to slaying with some god-like powers. It almost feels like Meta to me.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but lets bring back to Vetting system to promote those chars to Master level.

Let's make being a Master mean you've put in,

  • Time with your faction
  • Time with a teacher
  • Time developing your Character
  • Time Writing on the board.
  • And displayed appropriate character OOC throughout it all.

Before you get to slap on Master tag, and provide little to no effort in helping further your community, or Social Circle of Writers beforehand.

Let us have at least one thing as a prestige thing. A goal to write towards.

It almost feels like cheating to Master tag my own chars, which is why I just don't do it.

Anybody else feel this way?

Anyhow that's my rant.

RC out.

As someone who starts out all her characters at Apprentice level even though it's not mandatory in any way, my answer is a hard no. Let people decide what powah level they want their characters to be on and let them write their own stories out as they please. Most people don't really abuse the system anyway and those that do would do so even with the harsher rules back in place.

If you feel like you lack a direction and need a goal to write towards to - talk to people. There are a lot of wonderful brainstormers on Chaos that could help you out with the pickle. Choose a few that will let you know if they think you've attained what you were after if you need the feedback or criticism.

But don't bring back the mandatory tiers and such. Give people more freedom to collaborate on awesome storytelling, not less.

For FU tiers, I oppose strongly. Not everyone wants to grind up from Knight or Padawan, let em.

As for company tiers, coming from someone who worked to be T6 (I know a bunch of others probably worked harder like Jorus, Danger, Sio, and Alric) I feel that without them there is something missing. Did they need to be so restrictive? Probably not, but abolishing them entirely feels wrong.

I'm probably a bit biased, but it feels like we lost something when we lost those corporate empires. Without the work and effort, they seem to be meaningless, and I could be missing stuff I don't keep up with everyone, but its been a while since I've seen a company matter outside the faction it primarily supports. There isn't a lot of corporate power or respect like several years ago when the GR tried to seize ATC's assets and basically started two or three other wars against them from what had been allies because of it.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Vetting system for master is sort of plausible, but vulnerable to abuse. As for companies - no. At least now no one gets the benefit of making me rebuild from Tier 1 if they try to destroy my company - something I greatly appreciate.

I would want these things to come back. Everything should be earned and roleplayed, not merely taken or given on merit. I would welcome these being brought back.

Not owning a company I won't comment on the Tier system. However, while it can be jarring to see someone OP when they start with an insta-Master rank, the likelihood is that they be OP in any rank. What you do is talk to them and persuade them to tone it down.

Restricting it to only people who put the time in is a disadvantage for those who want to just write a Master and have put the work in previous alts. I always write from the start, or at least low ranking, because I find the build up fun but not everyone else does.

In short, I agree with [member="Scherezade deWinter"] let people be whatever rank they want. If the writer goes too extreme, talk to them. Use your head.

"The intent is to provide players writers with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes ranks."

It worked well for EA, why not for Chaos staff?

Honestly, if you think writing here should be based around a reward system for leveling up a character, maybe reconsider why you're doing it. Writing and collaboration should be the goal, not the means to an end.

I think we're doing just fine without them, so there's little reason to stuff the site back into a bottle-necked position when it's already out of the bag. You can do quite a bit of what's been brought up in this thread, and more, if you actually commit yourself to it - rather than having your hands tied and being forced to play along. Maybe you should give that a try, instead of pushing to enforce it on others?

Grinding XP would not be a solution. In fact, it would only kill off people's creativity. And I am saying this as someone who started out with a character that wasn't even a Padawan, just an undiscovered Force Sensitive and worked my way up, like almost everyone else does as well. People still do apprenticeships, still do the progression, because it is fun. But adding in an OOC "requirements" part would just be a grind and takes away the fun.
