OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

SETTING INFORMATION
  • Military Base Name: Bastion Imperialis Naval College
  • Classification: Military Academy/Institution
  • Location: Bastion
  • Affiliation: The Empire
  • Population: Moderate - The Naval College’s population is composed primarily of its instructors, military police units, stormtrooper garrison forces, support staff, and last but not least; its students, who study all manner of naval doctrine.
  • Demographics: Due to being an official institution of the Imperial State, the Bastion Imperialis Naval College does not discriminate between the myriad of races and sentient species that call The Empire their home. That said, prospective students who have demonstrated exemplary academic scoring are seriously considered only if they are able to present a formal recommendation from an official of the Imperial Central Government, or prestigious and equally exemplary alumni within the Imperial Navy. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for students who demonstrate remarkable aptitude in their relevant field of study, but such exceptions are rare, and indicate the quality of such students accepted in such a way. Cadets from other military branches are permitted temporary entrance via an exchange program under special circumstance, following a procedure akin to how cadets gain enrollment to begin with. Additionally, whether by happenstance or otherwise; the vast majority of students who enroll and graduate from the school are either human, or near-human offshoots.
  • Accessibility: Logistically, the Bastion Imperialis Naval College is relatively easy to locate and visit. Practically, as mentioned above; academic entrance into the institution is another thing entirely. With it being a military installation, regular civilians are only able to access it during tour dates & times so as to view the military memorabilia displayed within.
  • Description: Bastion Imperialis Naval College is considered to be one of the foremost institutions for the education of commissioned naval officers - whether they be a part of the officer corps, TIE Fighter program, or logistical corps. With this in mind, the physical location of the college proper is a modest complex of buildings within the city center of Bastion’s capital, Ravelin. But even so, compared to the city-sized campus of Rampart on Cathar, Bastion Imperialis is significantly more compact. It is more than simply a physical collection of buildings - it's an institution that breeds excellence.

POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Defiance Hall: Serving as the public centerpiece of the Naval College, Defiance Hall occupies the main building of the institution, and includes the following:
    • Exhibits spread throughout the main atrium, which showcase artifacts and displays detailing the naval history of The current Empire, the ‘New Imperial Order’ state preceding it, the fallen ‘Sith Empire’, and empires of antiquity such as the Fel Empire and Galactic Empire. While taking great care to avoid idolizing the more controversial aspects of it pertaining to the late Sith Empire, the main goal is twofold; to provide an informative and engaging experience for the general public, and to reinforce the rich military heritage - both good and bad - that all graduates stand to inherit and become a part of.
    • Wall of Alumni - The ‘Wall of Alumni’ is actually a holographic “wall” which holds a database of service portraits from all graduates from the Naval College. The wall cycles through each graduating year post-civil war on a rotating basis, and recalls specific graduating years on request.
    • Rausegeber Auditorium - The main auditorium of the Naval College, used for public addresses, commencement speeches, and special events. The auditorium underwent extensive renovations to remove Sith-centric carvings and engravings within the trim and millwork of the auditorium, and completed renovations shortly after the death of Rurik Fel. The auditorium was nearly named after the late Imperator, but instead was named after the Admiral Regent of the newly formed governing body of the Empire - Carlyle Rausegeber. While the reason for this is not publicly known, many believe it was to try and establish a level of support for the then-nascent ruling body, as well as to maintain favor as a naval academy during the current order of things.

    • First Year Cadet Classrooms - The first year cadet classrooms are kept within Defiance Hall for one main reason; it is during that first year that cadets are educated about the history, not just of the college itself, but of the aforementioned heritage they are exposed to within the historical exhibits of the building. They receive a comprehensive, full immersion induction into the culture of the college, along with its traditions and ways of life. They are exposed to the basics of naval strategy and operations via rudimentary education over historical battles and engagements. But most importantly, they are given the tools needed to adopt a mindset that is unique to Bastion Imperialis - a dogged adherence to one’s duty, and a mind shaped to analyze all angles of a given problem. Many students advance from their first year believing they’ve experienced the worst of it - but it is only the beginning.
  • The Skytower: Behind Defiance Hall stands a very large and imposing tower that stretches into the skyline of Ravelin amongst the other major structures. It possesses a dominating view of the Imperial Capital City at the very peak, which houses a penthouse office and quarters for the Commandant of the College, and a transport pad on the roof. The lower levels of the college consist primarily of dormitories, class rooms and educational facilities for all cadets ranging from second year to upper-classman status. Imperialis tradition results in a literal hierarchy symbolized by the tower itself, wherein the ‘lower’ classmen (first and second year) are quartered and instructed within the lower levels of the facility, whereas the upperclassmen ascend into the higher levels of the tower.

  • Battlestar: Battlestar is an orbital installation that forms part of the planetary defense network. While not strictly a part of the Bastion Imperialis institution, it does maintain a strong tie to the naval college as a field training destination for upperclassmen engaging in field scenarios and basic provisional deployment as they prepare for final exams. It is through this station that all cadets eventually experience their first deployment into space, and get to see first hand what life is like on an Imperial naval vessel. Zero-G training is simulated, and Battle Star does serve as the main base of operations for the TIE Fighter Pilot training program of Bastion Imperialis. As a special tradition, the commandant’s commencement speech for each graduating class takes place within Battlestar, and is live streamed through to Rausegeber auditorium for lower classmen to watch planetside.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Bastion Imperialis Naval College is among the oldest academic military institutions within The Empire. Like the Naval Academy on Prefsbelt IV, the Bastion Imperialis was among the foremost of institutions to educate the minds of young naval prospects. In the days of the old Sith Empire, much of its course curriculum centered around indoctrination within the Imperial State, and it catered to the Imperial Elite as many of their relatives and the children of their favored subordinates would find it easy to enroll within and jumpstart their career. Due to its history, many notable commanders that partook within the Third Imperial Civil War on either side of the conflict were graduates from the prestigious academy. Once the planet of Bastion was captured, and the Sith Empire crumbled into fragments; the Bastion Imperialis Naval College was among the many other institutions that were spared, but reconstituted. Yet, due to the fabled reputation it possessed of educating highly efficient and dynamic officers, as well as the connections the institution had within many influential members of the New Imperial Order movement; many of its unobtrusive customs and traditions remained so as to maintain the atmosphere that lent itself to generations of academic excellence.

Today, the Bastion Imperialis Naval Academy has done well to maintain its storied reputation and traditions and carry it further into the New Order. From the manner in which its cadets ascend throughout their educational career within the academy, to the extracurricular fraternities that exist and forge bonds of brotherhood (or sororities forging bonds of sisterhood); the connections afforded to Bastion Imperialis graduate are second to none, and almost exclusively are worth the effort of securing enrollment. While its list of graduates are diverse in terms of their personality and approaches to their respective naval careers, common traits that are instilled in nearly all alumni are: 1) An overriding focus on the execution of one’s duty, even under the grimmest of circumstances; 2) An analytical approach to both the battle field and other aspects of Imperial life, such as politics, investigation, and life; 3) Loyalty to the Imperial way of life, with a seeming bias toward Tarkinist ideologies.

Among the cultural idiosyncrasies formulating the atmosphere of Bastion Imperialis, is the manner in which students from the Naval college view graduates from the Empire’s other premier naval academies - such as those located on Prefsbelt IV or Cathar. Colloquially, Bastion graduates refer those from Prefsbelt as ‘Heel Clickers’; a mocking reference to the manner in which Prefsbelt servicemen greet superior officers, as well as a veiled dig at the manner in which they appear to mindlessly go about their duties - and they refer to graduates from the Rampart academy on Cathar as ‘Fringers’ or ‘Backwater Hicks’, largely due to Rampart’s well known acceptance of nearly any and all who apply. It almost goes without saying that, whether merely by perception or through some merit; Bastion graduates view themselves as the the successors to a proud Naval legacy, and peerless in both their education and approach.
