To operate successfully in a hostile galaxy, the Kainate shifted tactics away from those employed by its predecessor the Sith Empire. Swift movement became paramount, quickly shifting from one location to another to avoid the fleets of enemy governments. The ability to be flexible in battle informed the decisions of Kainate researchers and tacticians, and they created the Vodal-class Strike Frigate in response.
The Vodal was a long and narrow vessel, its width and height far shorter than its length of four hundred meters. It was equipped with a great deal of weaponry to fulfill its assault purposes, such as powerful ion cannons, laser cannons, point-defense guns, and, most importantly, deployment harpoons and magnetic grapples. The latter two weapons were of great importance, as they could be used to harry enemy vessels by tethering them and either keeping them in place or yanking them out of position against their will. The deployment harpoons could be used to transport boarding parties into the afflicted vessel as well.
For defenses, the Vodal was equipped with a ubiquitous deflector shield that covered every inch of the frigate's surface area. An electromirror shield acted as the second line of defense, capable of absorbing the energy from enemy fire or deflecting it back towards them. The hull was reinforced with quadanium and durasteel armor plating and lined with a duraplast anti-ionic mesh.
No hangar was included in the Vodal's design, as naval doctrine within the Kainate had shifted away from a focus on carriers to independent fighter craft equipped with hyperdrives. Instead, that space was occupied with powerful engine systems that could swiftly propel the Vodal through the empty void of space. The Vodal was also equipped with a Jumpmaster 1.01 Microdrive, which not only allowed the frigate to reach a 1.01 class lightspeed but also microjump short distances. This was especially useful during raiding operations.
