Faction There's a Fungus Among Us [Kainate]

IhC4jNa.png

GRUMANI SECTOR, ALPHORESIS

The arxeum hung low in the sky, moored to the fungal surface by great tethered anchors drilled directly into the barren earth. While the planet below was particularly inhospitable to most forms of life, the giant wroshyr-tall fungal stalks emitting potent cocktails of toxins and other viral agents, the scientists of the Kainate had created a protective suit strong enough to withstand the nightmarish conditions on Alphoresis. Based on sedimentary data extracted by unmanned probes, Alphoresis was once a world of fields, steppes, and fjords. A viral outbreak over a thousand years ago triggered a cascading event where the entire planet's biosphere was transformed into a fungal landscape, much like those found on Felucia.

All inhabited settlements were abandoned during this period, their ruins overtaken by the fungal growth as it spread across the planet. Attempts to recolonize the planet had ended in failure, the planet become far too inhospitable to tame without completely erasing the biosphere from existence; a task far too arduous for those interested in retaking Alphoresis. So, in the intervening centuries since that time, the planet has been allowed to exist in a state of isolation and neglect.

Until now.

By the will of Darth Carnifex, Dark Lord of the Sith, Alphoresis fell into the domain of the Kainate. Now, one of the Kainate's mobile academies was parked over the world, and the Dark Lord Himself was present in preparation for the first planned expedition to the planet's surface. With Him were many of the Kainate's best and brightest, as well as allies found outside the Kainate within the Sith Order. Carnifex stood tall in contrast to those occupying the launch bay, His powerful frame concealed behind the protective suit that would keep the toxins of Alphoresis from infecting His biology. The others were dressed in the same gear, many of them going over their instruments and checking other's to ensure that everything was in its proper place.

Amidst them were various mechanized vehicles, each equipped with collection and harvesting instruments. They were being loaded up onto cargo shuttles retrofitted from the days of the Sith Empire, their hulls emblazoned with the symbol of the Kainate in bright red paint. Each in attendance knew what they were getting into, and understood the tasks that the Dark Lord of the Sith had set before them. There would be no grand declaration on behalf of His Majesty, the Dark Lord's mood particularly grim as He silently boarded one of the cargo transports that would ferry Him and His entourage to the surface.

Down below, a sort of crude landing zone had been built by construction droids. This would be their starting point, their ground zero, for the Kainate taming of Alphoresis.

Objective I. - Establish a permanent settlement on Alphoresis.

The landscape of Alphoresis is harsh and unforgiving, an endless horizon of skyscraper-tall fungal trees and winding canyons and crags. What stable land we have found must be cleared and prepared for habitation, structures must be erected, a perimeter must be formed. Do this, in the name of the Dark Father, and the greater Kainate.

Objective II. - Scout Alphoresis for harvestable materials.
Beneath the planet's surface lies an untapped trove of minerals and ore, while the fungal forests offer treasures of their own. Fan out across the world and utilize the power of technology to take what you can, for it is within your power to do so. Return to base camp with the fruits of your labor, so they may be transported on our treasure barges to Malsheem.

Objective III. - Cull the local wildlife.
Centuries of rapid environmental transformation has accelerated evolution in the native wildlife, transforming them into fungal beasts and monsters. We're not here to found a nature reserve, collect as many living specimens for the laboratories as you can and destroy the rest. We are masters of the land, and we will exercise our authority.

Objective IV. - BYOO
Do whatever you want, it's a free country.

Objective III - Culling the local wildlife
Post: 1

While his master commenced his operation to establish the first Kainate presence upon this strange new world, Darth Xyrah would be undertaking a more proactive operation on his master's behalf. He would bring the area surrounding the colony to heel through military might. His newly constructed droid armies were ideal for this task, utterly immune to the toxicity and spores in the environment. A fleet of Lucrehulks had already arrived in orbit, deploying legions of battle droids to the planetary surface.

Darth Xyrah emerged from one of the first of his troop transports to land on the surface, garbed in an environmental suit and flanked by his personal cohort of SBG-2 Royal Guardians. Those droids already disembarked commenced their operation, engaging any local wildlife they encountered and slowly burning away the fungal forests in the area with flamethrowers.

A Skelmorn.

The creatures were not native to Alphoresis, but had been found on the planet regardless, albeit in extremely small numbers. It was rumored that they had been set loose on Alphoresis by Trandoshan big game hunters, who had sought to kill the massive beasts for sport before realizing that their prey was far too crafty, intelligent, and dangerous to be considered such. After annihilating the Trandoshan hunting parties sent after them, it did not take long for the Skelmorn to begin ravaging the local ecosystem, preying on wildlife that had never evolved to account for such a cunning predator. Such creatures were easy prey, and it hadn’t taken long for the Skelmorn to flourish due to a lack of competition.

The presence of the Skelmorn on Alphoresis was only realized after one of the monsters tore through an entire Troop of soldiers, leaving only a handful of survivors in the massacre. Fortunately, the other Skelmorn could not inflict nearly as many casualties on the Kainate soldiers, for it was discovered that the creature which had annihilated the initial landing party was Force-sensitive, a rarity among the Skelmorn. It was this exact monster that Quintessa had been tasked with killing, along with another Sith who she had yet to meet. Scouting reports had also mentioned that it was a female with a clutch of Hatchlings, which she had been instructed to locate and capture for study.

The ornithopter made a racket of noise as it touched down in a small clearing at the designated rendezvous point where Quintessa would link up with Jonu Zihtil Jonu Zihtil before moving into the Skelmorn’s territory. After disembarking from the craft, the Asa’nyx acknowledged the pilot with a short salute before he took off, leaving her alone in the clearing, with only her weapons for company as she waited for Jonu to arrive.

In the meantime, the diminutive speedster sat down and began to meditate, honing her emotions into a sharp, lethal edge in preparation for the coming hunt!

The woman had been little more than a dark pilgrim of late. Following the twining tails of life sustaining energy to and fro across the wider galaxy. Keeping to the sidelines out of sight and out of mind. Watching always for moments of opportunity, especially when the Darkest of Stars made their way to a planet with little more than simple space to create and build.

The comforts of the dark side had not nestled itself within the crust of the planet. Not yet permeated the fauna and flora of what existed on the seemingly long forgotten rock.

Something she hoped would be remedied with ease and equal measure alacrity. No one enjoyed the silent siphoning of energy where a pureblood was concerned. She donned the appropriate gear to make touchdown on the surface, even going so far as to make contact with someone of the Kainate to provide a decent reason as to her presence. Aside from the prize at the end of the game trail.

A rumor of troopers being slain had reached the tangled web of hers, and she was intent upon finding out the weight of those words.

An interesting specimen to be sure if what she had gleaned was true. No delusion of taming the beast came to mind in a true sense. Satiation before containment between its uses at worst. Though a youngling, or even a hatchling could perhaps be brought into limited subservience were they quick enough about this endeavor.

While able to keep the bodyglove of her own choosing, the protective attire for the evening's ordeal was a less than desirable thing.

Silently praying to her ancestors for guidance at the though of a breach in the thing.

Her favored ship touched down outside of the Skelmorn's territory without leaving Jonu with the task of ferrying potential prizes any great distance. The filtration system working overtime to keep the internal compartment free of any potential hazards as the large being made her way forward. Behind the mask, eyes stared up at the formations of fungus trees with disdain.

This was not the place she wished to spill even a single drop of her life's blood.

Nor would she willingly without recompense.

The heavy steps were meant as an announcement to the diminutive being she had been tasked with meeting. Not remarkably difficult when one opened themselves to the force and felt someone in meditation. Her eyes narrowed to slits, staring until she spotted the ball of force energy waiting for her.

Walking about in the broad of day itched at her instincts. A horrid idea in the more pleasant of descriptors, and an excellent way of figuring out the keen nature of the beast they sought.

<"Quintessa, I assume? Else a looney wanting for the end in a violent fashion."> A rough buy polite greeting that shifted to a statement of sanity if she'd found the wrong being.

The haft of the battleaxe was shoved into the ground as Jonu covered the rear hook with her hands, resting her chin there to examine her potential hunting partner for the evening.

The tiny Asa’nyx’s eyes flashed open as her senses registered her hunting partner’s arrival, ears twitching as she picked herself up from the ground and stood up to her full stature. However, upon turning around, she found herself dwarfed by a red-skinned Sith Pureblood who stood at more than twice her height.

And yet, a coquettish smile came over the diminutive speedster’s features.

“Yes, I am.” She began in Imperial Basic. “And you are Jonu, I believe?” The Asa’nyx added, before glancing over to the Pureblood’s battleaxe, a weapon longer than she was tall.

“That axe…it will serve us well on this hunt.” Quintessa commented idly, before changing the topic. “I think you’ve been briefed already, but in case you haven’t, our mark is a Force-sensitive Skelmorn in this area, north of our location. These creatures are native to a little-known world in Wild Space called Geminidae.” She continued. “They are intelligent, vicious predators and this one is among the worst of them.” The Asa’nyx finished.

“Our assignment is to slay the beast and capture its Hatchlings for study.” Quintessa stated as she pulled her chakrams from their place on her back, a pair of bladed discs which were roughly the size of a large pizza, well-suited to decapitating humanoid-sized targets, deadly ranged attacks via throwing, and hand-to-hand slashing.

“Are you ready?”

<"I am, and the pleasure is mine to meet you."> The woman let the curt tone drop. The smile she wore reaching the sharp points of her cheek protrusions.

Seemed her little foray into the wild could bring two prizes if she was attentive a enough. She listened to the details once more, enjoying the sound as she nodded to make sure Quintessa kept speaking.

The crimson eyes examined the choice of weapons intensly as they were drawn from their place on her back.

<"Interesting weapon. I'll be sure to watch you use them."> She chimed, lifting the pole-ax and settling it across a shoulder. <"I doubt the beast will draw us close to it's nest. If the brood is force sensitive as the one we hunt, it won't be difficult to find them at least.">

Jonu would follow behind Quintessa, ensuring her steps didn't overtake the smaller being.

It wouldn’t take long for the amazonian Pureblood to realize that overtaking her smaller partner was not something she needed to worry about, as the tiny Asa’nyx proved to be remarkably fast on her feet, even while walking. All the while, silence fell between the two women as they moved inside the fungal forest, with Quintessa leading the way while passively utilizing her Sense in the hopes that the monster wouldn’t detect their presence until it was too late.

Unfortunately, such efforts proved to be futile.

“Something is close.” Quintessa spoke, her voice inaudible to anyone not in the comms channel due to the sonic neutralizers inside of her helmet, which prevented sound from carrying outward.

“It’s not the Skelmorn. The Force signatures aren’t strong enough and there’s a lot more than one of them.” She hissed, priming her emotions in anticipation of violence. Then, the Asa’nyx picked up the sounds of padding footsteps, her sensitive hearing allowing her to detect them from hundreds of meters away.

“It’s a pack of…dogs.” The Asa’nyx added. “Get ready for a-”

Suddenly, a piercing howl cut through the air, followed by a sharp grunt as Quintessa threw one of her chakrams, the weapon flying through the air at lethal speed before burying itself deep in the skull of an akk dog that was hiding in a distant bush, which proceeded to let out a high-pitched yelp as it died.

As if on cue, the other canines emerged from their hiding places and began to charge towards the two women, compelled only by a preternatural hunger!

The larger woman kept her steps close after realizing the assumption about her compatriot was a poor one. The trip was mostly silent to her dismay, but they were here to hunt after all, and undue noise would be a larger detriment than aid.

Their walk came to a halt however when Quintessa noted something was close. Crimson eyes shifted to amber as Jonu blinked and utilized her own sense of the force.

Having someone notice trouble was pleasant, being blind to what was already present was not however.

<"Pests."> The scoff came before the Lanvarok was tossed from the right shoulder into an overhead swing from her left hand. The second of the akk dogs to squall till the end as a third moved to strike at her exposed hand.

<<"Stolen vigor, purpose undone, be remade, till my will be done.">> The cranial wound of the akk dog beneath her pole-axe was a spout of blood as it wound a path up to meet the open jaws of its friend.

The clamping jaws of the third akk dog finding no purchase as the lifeblood of the second formed a temporary barrier over her exposed arm.

<"The whole of the planet will awaken with their baying."> The pureblood spat, right hand extending to grasp the offending third akk dog and crushing its neck between her own strength and the crushgaunts within her bodyglove.

The pole-axe cunched and slid sideways, freed from the victim and waiting to find another as she dropped the third dog and grasped the Lanvarok with both hands.

Giving another howling grunt, Quintessa let her second chakram fly free from her hands, the bladed disc slashing through the skull of a charging akk dog not even a split-second later. Then, after turning 180 degrees on her heels, Quintessa aimed and fired one of her gauntlet-mounted shotguns at a pair of akk dogs which had been charging towards her back, a pair of loud booms sounding out as two 10-gauge slug rounds tore through the brains of the two canines, rendering them as a little more than a gorey ruin. A third akk dog emerged from behind those two, only to find its head severed from its body as Quintessa slashed through its neck in a blur of motion, using the vibroblade on that same gauntlet.

Afforded a temporary reprieve from the dogs, the speedster called her chakrams back into her hands, before launching herself into an acrobatic, Force-augmented cartwheel to evade the jaws of another dog which had sought to tear open her throat. The leaping maneuver carried her seven meters to the left of her original position, at which point she let loose with one chakram, then the next, decapitating the dog which had just attacked her, then another which had charged towards her rear.

Then, silence.

The speedster called her chakrams back into her hands and moved over to the carcass of one of the canines her partner had slain, seemingly by crushing its neck. The canine’s life was quickly fading, but Quintessa didn’t need the Force to reach a conclusion as to why they had been attacked in such an aggressive, bloodthirsty manner.

“These creatures…they were compelled.” Quintessa said, her voice going softer as her anger faded. “We need to be on guard. It may seek to do this again.” She added.

"I doubt it has the strength to influence a sapient being, so we should be safe." She continued. "However, the fauna of this area will be set against us. I fear that next time, it will attempt a more subtle approach."

The battle was there and gone, her own count coming to a measly trio as she caught glimpses of Quintessa making her small form dance through the air with and agility she had to admire.

Where the smaller being was graceful and clean in her strikes, Jonu was quite literally the hammer to a nail equivalent.

Broad slashes and relying on the strength that was natural to dispatch the circling being that largely targeted the smaller of the duo.

<"Seems so. Far more intelligent prey than I had guessed."> The pureblood chuckled, slicing the air and cleaning the pole-axe with a swift move.

<"It's shown a part of its hand. Assume everything will strike out."> She shrugged, having already come to the conclusion about the planet.

She gazed sidelong at a corpse, letting her hand extend to siphon the fading life-force from the fallen akk dog before they moved on.

<"You are not troubled by such quarry. I suppose you have hunted equal or more dangerous prey?"> The pretense of silence lost since the Skelmorn likely knew where they were already.

Wiping the blood and viscera from her chakrams, Quintessa glanced up at her partner, her cyan eyes widening as Jonu extracted the life force from one of the dying akk dogs, invigorating herself in the process. To the same end, the tiny Asa’nyx injected herself with a dose of the Supernal Infusion, bringing herself back up to full strength.

<"You are not troubled by such quarry. I suppose you have hunted equal or more dangerous prey?"> The pretense of silence lost since the Skelmorn likely knew where they were already.

“I may have.” Quintessa answered. “Or perhaps not. I have yet to decide how dangerous this creature is, as compared to the others.” She finished

With that, Quintessa placed her autoinjector back into its place on her belt, before continuing ahead towards the swamps. After a few minutes of trekking, Quintessa came to a halt, bringing up her right hand as her cyan gaze took in the area. She didn’t like it, knowing the waters might hide all manner of dangerous beasts which had been dominated by the Skelmorn, but there was no way around it that she knew of. Too much of the region was simply unexplored.

“We can traverse the area by jumping from one tree branch to another.” She began. “I’m lighter, so I’ll go first and you can follow me.” The Asa’nyx added.

And just as she finished speaking, a soft note of shifting water sounded out across the area, indicating that there was life teeming within the swamp.

“We should hurry.”
