Bryn'adul Invasion of Nar Kreeta
She had tried to shake them awake, but she could barely see them, and she was coughing and they weren't moving no matter how much she screamed at them to wake up. Her eyes burned and she knew they were dead.
Her next minutes were panic. She stumbled, running from the screams and the sounds and the snarls, she heard things, sharp whistling sounds very close to her head. It was all so blurry. But even she could see the fireballs erupting, could feel the ground shaking. She didn't know where she was.
The ground collapsed beneath her and she shrieked but her shriek couldn't be heard over the roar of The Bryn'adul murdering Nar Kreeta.
They'd been poor, she and her parents. Too poor to get the hell off the planet.
She smelled foul things. Dust and blood mixing in the air. Waste. Gore. Ozone. She would never know how many bolts and bullets had come 'this' close to killing her instantly. How many artillery strikes she evaded, how many Bryn Warriors had spotted her and moved in for the kill only to be distracted at the last second.
She struck her head as she fell, smacking into stuff that left scrapes and gashes as she fell, hitting a wall and screaming as she writhed on the ground, in pain and nearly blind. She pulled herself to her feet, unable to make out blurs more than a few meters ahead.
She didn't notice the sound of fighting had died down until she realized all she could hear was the sound of her own breathing and whimpering.
She thought she had fallen far underground...she certainly thought she had fallen quite aways, as she could barely pick up the sounds of fighting from above.
The girl smelled dust, but saw a faint glow ahead as she walked, too scared to do anything but think about going wherever there was no pain or death. Everything hurt and she didn't know what to do.
It hurt to move. Hurt to walk. She wanted her parents.
She stopped as she began to make out some type of pedestal ahead, blinking as the light grew brighter and hurt her eyes. As she got closer, she began to make out the shape better.
It was a crimson helm sporting a visor with a distinct "T" Shape.
She took it off the pedestal, wondering what one of their helmets was doing here?
What WAS this place?
She blinked and she was suddenly in a void of blue and black flames, getting the sensation of falling. She looked around, unable to move or scream, though she badly wanted to. Too much was happening and her brain couldn't process it.
She saw a figure, 'impossibly' larger than herself, striding forward in the distance. She thought it the size of a mountain.
It was larger than a mountain. Taller than the tallest building on Coruscant.
A figure wreathed in great bronze armor, one side of its torso masculine, the other feminine, but it's great armor was impossibly detailed, millions of Mandalorian helms carved into it's surface.
The girl stared, frozen into the impossibly gigantic T-Shaped Visor as it reflected her frozen form across it's glossy, mirror like surface that rippled with flame...
"Ge'tal!"
Red of Clan Mobius stirred awake in her hammock, close to the entrance of the hangar where her Starfighter was contained. It was on an old uncharted planet the Clan used as a hiding spot from time to time, having built a private airbase there. They didn't always use this place but it had been an off season.
Red blinked and spotted her brother, Sedrik, fully clad in his armor, with atypical colorings, completely red on one half, and completely green on the other. Red had her helmet, a bleached skull white in color covering her head. The rest of her was in a work jumpsuit with the sleeves rolled up.
"What is it?" Red asked.
"Uncle needs you up. Haran, of all the moments you're awake and nothing's required, one of the few times where it's really urgent, and you just happen to have picked that moment to go to actual sleep?" Sedrik grumbled uneasily, shaking his head.
Red, without a word of protest was already up, quickly putting on her armor, picking up her heavy beskar warhammer and putting it in a sling over her shoulder
Sedrik and she were then walking to the main fortified building her father was currently running operations out of. Red didn't ask any questions. It was close to dawn, and both moons were slowly vanishing as it spread.
A lot of her clan mates were already quite busy. She had only been asleep about two days of non stop work, with only food and water to break the pleasant, yet fiery monotony of the hammer's sing in the forge.
She didn't feel winded. She knew she should have been groggy as hell, that everywhere should be sore and knew that other's knew she shouldn't be up after working that hard.
Red grew disturbed as she walked by everyone. Two hours ago, it had been quiet, only her and the Nighttime watch and essential adade to keep the base safe up. Now everyone was moving, and urgently. She saw ammo crates being moved.
Some of the older ones gave her brief glances that chilled her to the bone as she passed by and she gave a slightly lower nod in response to her elders as she entered the building.
What the hell had happened in the two hours she had been asleep?
She passed by the banner of her clan, a red banner featuring a blue Mythosaur Skull positioned over a Mobius Strip.
She said a little prayer to the Oversoul in her head as she passed by it.
Her uncle waited in the med bay, clad in a black armor, a giant of a man that towered over most of the other Mandalorians in the camp, His fist alone was the size of her head and he bore a great battle-axe. He was second in command after the Alor, and her father was third.
She stopped, spotting one of her clan members who she was very close to, Tenno, lying on a bed, his chest bearing multiple shrapnel wounds.
Red's fist clenched.
"What happened, Uncle?" she asked professionally, though she went over to her dying friend's side. He wasn't conscious.
"It was an ambush, Red..." her uncle rumbled in a deep tone. "There's been some sort of attack on the Warrior's Forest. Your Father and The Alor are missing."
Red turned. "We were just there a few days ago. We used a stealth vessel. Did random jumps to shake any possible tails. We had enough harvest to keep the lights running another couple of months. Why did they go back to Mandalor?"
"I'm not certain. Kardys was acting real spooked. Wouldn't say what it was. He just roped your father into it while you were working. Tenno here went along, so did Grigori, Melu, and Chekran." Her Uncle answered grimly. "Tenno's the only one who came back. And he ain't gonna wake up."
"Did he say who ambushed them?"
"He said it was on Mandalore, and that the ones who did it were wearing old Neo-Crusader armor."
Red and her Uncle's attention were drawn back to the lifesign monitor, beeping faster. The Medics had done all they could.
She held the comatose Mandalorian's hand as his vitals plunged. Then he was gone.
Her brother clenched his fists.
"We will find our father and kill the bastards that did this." he swore.
(Red Mobius: For about as far back as I am still capable of remembering, I always wanted to be a Mandalorian.)
("Rags to Riches" by Tony Bennett Plays) (Pauli didn't have to move for anybody: 1000 XP)
8 hours later
The Davro-Class Light Freighter slipped out of hyperspace over Mandalor. Red with twelve others, including her brother. Her Uncle included.
They were going in force to The Warrior's Forest, but there was no need to compound their problems and make them worse via announcing. All they could do was pray the enemy didn't have a Crystal Grav-Field Trap...
Tenno had given her Uncle the coordinates to where they were ambushed, but still hadn't managed to tell what they had been doing here. The clan members were all mosre experienced then she in the ways of battle, but it was her armor that they used to protect themselves. Tenno's armor had held up actually quite magnificently under constant attack. It had taken frag grenade at close range to defeat the Armor.
It took some of the sting out of his death, as she was deeply afraid it had been some flaw she had missed in the forging. Tenno had been her friend. The idea that she had failed him in his hour of need had sent knives of pain into her heart. She had even examined it twice, after it had been removed from his body, had even gotten the opinion of the senior armorer to be certain it wasn't her failing him, just the enemy having the weapon necessary to defeat it.
Yet she still felt like she had failed him. If she had added more plating, or made the plating thicker, but how could she have without slowing him down? Tenno had never liked wearing heavy armor.
Back to the drawing board. Got to take into account close range explosive assault... she thought to herself guiltily, thankful her helmet hid her sorrow.
Just then, the alarm klaxons on the ship lit up.
"We're being tracked!" The Pilot yelled to her Uncle. "Ion Pulse Missiles inbound, closing fast!"
"Break for the surface! Where are they coming from?" Her Uncle ordered.
"Some sort of base in one of the mountains. In one of the most devastated sections of the planet. It's...its close to the Forest entrance, Sir."
"How long have they been there?! Why the hell didn't we pick them up before?!" her Uncle exclaimed.
The Pilot didn't answer, too busy trying to evade the wave of pulse missiles.
He didn't succeed.
The Electronics went dead as the missile struck, and the ship lost control after re-entry, getting hit again.
"BRACE FOR IMPACT!" her Uncle yelled.
Part of the Hull tore open, and she and a number of her clan mates were sucked into the open air.
(Character Theme Song Power Up)
(Theme: "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King)
Red regained consciousness, saw she was falling to the ground, and trapped in her crash webbing, and frantically reached for her knife to cut herself free, and saw at least five others were falling.
Her great strength aided the vibro knife and she ripped herself free afterward, attempted to activate her jet-pack.
Not good.
Red dived through the air, keeping her arms and legs together, desperately trying to reach her clan mates who were falling as she watched the ship go down.
She barely reached the first one and shook him, screaming at him to wake up.
He stirred, freaked out, and activated his rocket pack while she dived after the second, the ground rushing ever closer. She had to reach the second one, and she kept trying to reactivate her Jetpack to no avail.
She didn't think about her own terror as she reached the second falling member of her clan, who had already awoken and was having problems with his own jetpack. She reached him, and his comms were still out. He pointed frantically at his jet pack, and Red could see a gash on it, with some blown circuits. She grabbed a laser welder off her belt, her adrenaline spiking, trying to think, the tool shaking in her hands, and it almost slipped out, and she frantically managed to hold on at the last second, even as she struggled to hold on to her fellow clan mate.
She reoriented herself, and prayed the temporay fix she was applying to the blown wires she saw, by-passing blown circuits wouldn't make the jetpack explode. She couldn't even apply sealant to the gash...
Her Hud came back on line and she suddenly got frantic comms transmissions from everybody. The ship had taken critical damage and a crash landing was inevitable.
She tapped into the comms of the Mandalorian she was holding onto.
"Don't turn this on until you're fifteen hundred meters from the ground! Land as soon as you can! I don't know how much stress your pack can take!" Red yelled, before letting go of him and diving after the third.
One thruster in her jetpack sputtered on, and she was struggling to stay flying as she quickly caught up to him, shutting her pack off, desperately shaking him. It took actively smacking his helmet with her own to stir him. He was severely disoriented at first, flaying about before he came to his senses and remembered, giving the thumbs up. She let go of him and went diving again, the ground now rushing towards her faster, getting terrifyingly closer.
Her heart sank as she saw the spike of debris that had punched through the visor with such force it had exited out the back of his helmet. Two left. She activated her jetpack out of desperation and it worked in sputters at irregular intervals as she raced toward them. one minute to impact.
She caught up to the second to last Mandalorian, desperately shaking at her.
"WAKE UP!" Red yelled. "WAKE UP, DAMMIT!"
The woman would not stir, and Red pulled her close and activated her pack again, racing down with her in tow. 30 seconds to impact for the one at the bottom.
Red diverted all power to her still working thruster as she sped toward the ground, firing her magnetic grapple cable at the leg of the remaining unconscious Mandalorian (Who she realized in terror was her brother) and it wrapped around his leg as she tried to steer away from the ground, the thrust of the pack began to slowly turn them away from the ground and to the horizon but they were still falling too fast.
Red saw the jetpack of the one she held looked undamaged, and in desperation she managed to hit the activation button on the unconscious Mandalorian's gauntlet by smashing against it with her belly.
The sudden thrust rocketed them in a sudden upswing away from the ground at the last second , but it was uncontrolled and she was trailing her brother behind them both. She cut the thrust to her own rocket and they started to descend. Her brother was close enough to the ground passing by she decided to risk it and cut the cord, letting him skip roughly across the ground for a mercifully short second and a half.
Red made sure she was the one whose body was closest to the ground, as she carefully fired her jetpack thruster intermitantly, trying to shut off the unconscious Mandalorian's jetpack.
Thats when her own thruster partly exploded from the over stress and they descended.
Red managed to at last shut off the jetpack just as the unconscious woman started to stir.
"Huh?" she barely manged to get out as Red tried to shield her from the sudden impact.
They both skipped across the ground violently for a few seconds and Red blacked out, her visor partly shattering.
When she came two, she felt nothting but pain.
Her HUD told the story. Multiple bruises, and a broken leg and hand. The Oversoul was harsh, and had rewarded her faith with pain. But also Life. Red wasn't complaining.
Red spotted the Mandalorian she had fallen with, and in spite of the pain, she dragged herself over to the other Mandalorian, tried to shake her with her good arm. No response.
Red dragged herself up to the head of the woman, and pulled the helmet off after undoing the seals.
Her fellow kin was dead. Zereda. They went on runs for Ciridium shipments together. The neck had likely snapped on impact.
Red looked and saw the Mandalorian whose pack she had made emergency repairs to get closer, flying through the air, he reoriented and started to dial the thrust down for a landing.
He was literally a second from feet touching the earth when his jetpack exploded and Red let out a shout of rage at herself.
One thousand feet. She should have told him to activate it at one thousand feet. She had miscalculated.
Red turned away from the flaming corpse as it hit the earth violently, not wanting to remember Kollin like that.
"Anyone!?" she called out over her comms.
"Is anyone there?!"
