Campaign The Great Hutt Space Endurance Race Redux

The Scar Worlds,
the ruins left from the Bryn'adul invasion.

What is left of Hutt Space is rough, and unwelcoming, but to many still it is home. It can be home.

Since the defeat of the invaders they have withdrawn from much of Hutt Space, leaving these devastated world open to be resettled by the billions of refugees spread across the galaxy. The Silver Jedi Concord has protected many worlds and served as a launching zone for recolonization, but they are not friendly to all the elements returning to Hutt Space.

Crime is and always has been king in this region. Hutt Kajidics, ruthless corporations, gangs, pirates... all have returned in force to retake their lost mantle.

Hutt Space is volatile, deadly. It will take the likes of the best starship captains in the galaxy to make the Scar Worlds heal.

This isn't a test of speed, it's an endurance challenge that will test every facet of a crew's morale, their ship's engineering, and their navigator's wits. There is no correct route. There's only what keeps you alive.

You begin at one of the starting locations, your choice:

Boonta - The closest approximation to a sacred Hutt world, birthplace of the legendary Boonta Eve Classic Podrace. The world was picked as an early target for return, and resettlement is already well underway.

Bothawui - Home of the Bothan species, former members of the CIS. The planet has become a major staging ground for Hutt Space refugee fleets returning home.

Gamorr - Home of the Gamorreans, a staple people of Hutt Space. The planet borders the Mandalorian Enclave, and has become another major staging ground for travel into Hutt Space, this time carrying many bounty hunters and fortune seekers.

Your goal is to pick up or drop off your choice of passengers or cargo at three of the following waypoints, in any order, and then leave the map. Finishing the course will take four posts (or fewer, if you burn out). The waypoints:

Varl – The dead homeworld of the ancient Hutts. As of late, fleets from all around Hutt Space have converged over Varl in an impromptu convention, revisiting and hashing out trade agreements and treaties of all kinds from before the Bryn'adul invasion.

Lowick – A once beautiful garden world plundered by the Bryn'adul. Brutal fighting is still occurring on and around the planet by daring adventurers and mercenaries against Bryn remnants that are dug in hard.

Deysum – A relatively poor, but safe, world in the SJC. Many non-Hutt refugees were settled on the world following their displacement, many seek transport back to their homes.

Riileb – A world that is among the rare few to be independent of Hutt influence. As a result of that, Riileb was hit hard by the invaders, but nevertheless efforts to recolonize it are still being made.

Nal Hutta/ Nar Shaddaa – The Glorious Jewel and its infamous Smuggler's moon, controlled by the SJC.

Cyborrea – A primary military world of the Hutts that held out well against the invaders until the Silver Jedi Pabol Offensive pushed them off Cyborrea for good.

OOC:

Hey everyone! So it's been almost a year since The Great Hutt Space Endurance Race, courtesy of Jerec Asyr Jerec Asyr . I had great fun with it and I'm sure many others did. Since then a lot has happened in the region, with the defeat of the Bryn'adul and the beginning of the Scar Worlds stories. This race will serve as a sequel, a catch up, to help develop new lore and stories set in post-invasion Hutt Space. Your character can be there for any reason, doing anything you want. The more the merrier.

Thank you to Jerec and all those who helped him develop these rules!

BURNOUT
Your ship has only two stats: Damage and Crew Strain. If either one reaches 10 at any point, you burn out and leave the race. Each time you Jump, you roll on a random events table to see whether you take Damage and/or Crew Strain. (None of the random events will ever take you below 0 Damage or Crew Strain, so if you're at 0 already and something beneficial happens, the benefit is wasted - but at least something bad didn't happen.)

TRAVEL
It will take you 4 turns/posts to complete the race. One turn/post (you might want to use 'captain's log' summary style) includes however many Jumps it takes to get to the next waypoint you pick, and all the random events that impact you during those Jumps. For clarity:
  • Post 1: Starting location to your first choice of waypoint.
  • Post 2: First to second waypoint.
  • Post 3: Second to third waypoint.
  • Post 4: Third waypoint to leaving the map.
A Jump is a marked route connecting two adjacent stops. For example, Bothawui to Nal Hutta along the Kaaga Run would be six Jumps (Void Station, Nar Kaaga, Carnovia, Circumtore, Rorak, Nal Hutta).

Once per turn/post, you can opt to make an Offroad Jump. An Offroad Jump can be:
  • Between any reasonably nearby planet and an unconnected place like Kessel, the Godsheart, or Ganatha.
  • A reasonable shortcut instead of going the long way around (e.g. Riileb to Ylesia, Near Pando to Gamorr).
Offroad Jumps can be a blessing or a curse. For an Offroad Jump, roll a d20 on the Events table.

RANDOM EVENT TABLES

All dice rolls work on the honor system. For each normal Jump, use a d12; for an Offroad Jump, use a d20. For example, say your first post requires six Jumps, one of which is an Offroad Jump, You would roll 5d12 and 1d20 on the events table.

YOUR ROLLRANDOM EVENT

Captain's Log
Leg 1
Kirk Korrado, of The Long Run Starlight Class Freighter
Gamorr ----> Riileb

So, there I was on my way back into Hutt Space. I hadn't been back in a few years, not since before the region got really bad. I started my run on Gamorr, picked up a few Gamorrean mercs headed to Riileb for security detail in the colonies. They weren't the brightest folk, and my Huttese is a little rusty, so there was a fair lack of communication.

Arami was nice and quiet as we passed by, but I didn't have my hopes up for getting further in.

At Syvris I stopped and got the ship looked over just to be safe. Not a lot of infrastructure set up in the Bootana yet for stuff like that.

I managed to get some shut eye on the way past Unagin, but then the route to Riileb demanded my attention.

The single hyperland connecting Riileb to the outside world was a death trap during the invasion, and the now massive debris field banged up my ship as I made my way through. Talk about some kinda nightmarish sight. At least the war was mostly over in these parts.

We got to Riileb safely, but I didn't stay long. My real goal is Narsh. Haven't seen that swingin' place in far too long, and I heard the Jedi are keeping it nice and shiny for me.

Cass wasn't wasting fuel or this she was taking the Parting Gift. Her and Pix hadn't had a lot of time alone lately, so Cass thought it would be nice to bring the Zeltron, she was excellent company and the best pilot on the Kyber, except Cass of course.

They started in Gammoor and loaded up. Three crates of illicit adult literature, banned in several sectors, these books described the relationship between a naracisstic billionaire abuser and his naive Stockholm syndrome victim, Cass even thought of renaming her night club the red room after reading it.

The first leg was easy really, the ship was running sweet nut, the mechanics they ran into on both the first stops were stunned how tidy the ship was considering its pirate ownership, Cass was a damn fine captain.

She was a little suprised though to be asked for a Hutt for passage, but who cares, he paid his was and his money was good for a night's rest at a 5 star hotel for the two of them. Rest is a curious word, it was refreshing to say the least.

The two arrived with their books and delivered them to the libraries. Queues of frustrated and eager customers waited cheering their names on their arrival.

Background-Eraser-20220213-195203026.png
The two girls climbed back aboard the Parting Gift and headed out of space dock for their next run, they were fully refreshed and ready to go for their next destination. As they took off and left the atmosphere, Pix looked at the map "OK Cass, I suggest we jump to Diyu, then it is just a couple of stops to Nal Hutta, nice easy leg then we can chill?"

Cass looked thoughtful for a moment but then casually asked. "how about the Triellus Trade route?"

"what? Lowick? But that is all the way across the sector, the quickest route would be this." she traced her fingers across the map through a pair of waypoints and off to safety. "What you are saying is eleven jumps just to the next drop of?"

Cass only smiled as she plotted the hyperspace route and fell into the shadow of some spice traders heading back south the way the came, they had to remain unnoticed, but Cass and Pix were well rested, and it turned out to be easy, so they played poker to pass the time.

As they joined the Southern end of the trade route they were jolted out if their card came as the ship was hit by hyperspace turbulence, they were bound to come across some at some point. No problem though. They clearly weren't the only ones to encounter this turbulence. The pair found a hutt, a youngling in his shuttle. Its hyperdrive was damaged and he was stranded. After a little exchange with the youngling demanding tribute for having him aboard his ship, the filthy ungrateful slug. They moved on. A little stressed out now.

Things only got worse as they delivered the hutt to his eldest cousin as requested. "Kark no am I paying you passage fees, maybe you should pay me not to space this little lump that had eaten my supplies?" The pair were set upon and chased out of hutt space. Dumping the baby slug in a barely fitting survival suit out into space. The distraction was enough to let them get away, but Cass was not happy. And Pix looked tired, as once again the hyperspace turbulence kicked in. Tossing them around and threatening to ruin their race, Cass watched as bits of the hull buckled from.hyperspace debris, but luckily the damage was only superficial.

"Force Cass, we need a stop off, we could both do with a long soak in the hot tub, and i dont care who is captain, I am getting a back rub.". This time Cass was in agreement with the Zeltron so they stopped and enjoyed a lovely evening rest together. By the time they left they were much more chilled and ready to go again.

"This is Captain Shawn Deathfist, scourge of the hutts, leviathan of Lowick, member of the Mighty Kraken Coalition! Power down your hyperdrive, open your vaults and prepare to be boarded, if you are lucky you will live as my concubines"

"This is Cass Gemini, Kark off!"

The opportunistic pirate cut the comm, stuck around for long enough for a quick scan of Cass's ship before disappearing in a hurry without any fanfare. Cass and Pix just laughed. They didn't get far though before they had more interest, several SJC patrol craft tailed them several light years. They managed to evade. But it was a stress they didn't need today.

Finally in Lowick, they delivered their books, they heard a whole crate of them went to a nun convent and the atmosphere there was buzzing!

If there was one thing Viz did not enjoy, it was when a buyer requested a pick up. In this case, the cargo assignment was to be picked up on Nar Bo Sholla and delivered to an institute in Deysum. That was what the datalink they had sent her had said, but she'd not bothered asking questions. They didn't pay her to ask questions.

She was two jumps in, cruising at normal speed along Hollistan Run hyperlane Her console chirruped and she glanced down surreptitiously at the display.

"You're joking." She muttered and her astromech, CAB-48 (Cab) whined an affirmation. Sure enough the readout showed not one, but two clusters of vessels approaching. As they came upon her she scanned them for ID as best she could. Spice- Caravans. Not one, but two. And two was difficult enough to deal with, now she was sandwiched between both groups.

One hailed her.

"Alpha-3 Nimbus Vessel, this is Spice Freighter 996. you are approaching and encroaching our flight pattern. Fall back and wait until we have cleared." The voice was deadpan and flat.

She felt a rush of anger and swallowed, blinking. Then....

"What the hell are you on about, I'm flying here." Stilza's voice echoed around her as she flew back into a tunnel of her own mind. Vaguely, she knew her far more surly personality would prevent her from resurfacing, but unlike most times Stilza took charge of her mind, she sat back and let it ride out.

"Fall back, Alpha-3, we are in a direct flight pattern and will not be deterred or detained."
996 said, his voice terse.

The other comm channel blinked and Stilza flipped it on, allowing the frequency to open between all three of them. "Alpha-3." Ship number two's voice was a woman, her own attitude curt and clipped. "This is Spice Freighter 847. Remove your position, you are in direct violation of our flight pattern."

Stilza pulled a face. "What about Mr. NonDeterred over here on the left? Isn't he in 'direct violation of your flight pattern' as well?"

Cab whirred, and Stilza waved him off. For once fully conscious of the display, Viz hovered above herself and simultaneously inside herself, watching. There was a pause on the comm.

"996, what is your caravan assignment number?" The woman snapped.

"I should be asking you the same question." 996 responded, and the two began arguing over the comm, their voices blending in a mix of corporate jargon and freighterspeak.

After a minute, they seemed enough distracted that Stilza was able to pull back and maneuver around and through the gap in both ships, moving outward and giving them a wide berth. She let out a line of feedback into the comm before Viz was able to swim out and grab control again, banishing a chuckling Stilza to the back corner of her mind.

She had just adjusted the ship once more and re-entered the hyperlane, the caravan far behind, when Cab shrieked again. She yelped "What is it this ti--"

The channel opened automatically and a low voice drawled. "Chuba Pateesa! Coona tee-tocky malia?"

Viz gaped at the vessel in front of her, a round passenger ship with a crest on it. A Hutt ship. "I'm sorry... what... took me so long?" She repeated the question back, flummoxed. She heard a switch crack and the deep tones of the voice lulled in basic. "Are you not the convoy we sent for?"

"...convoy?"

As it would turn out, the "Convoy" to which this raucous hutt was referring to never showed. Moragan, ever the softie, managed to convince Viz into escorting the massively obnoxious creature to Hollastin, where it was safely dropped off. Viz quickly exited the situation, but not before a transfer of credits was given for her good deed.

Somewhere halfway to Affavan she was hailed, and the captain of a ship, a refugee vessel, offered her a mechanic for her ship. Seeing as how she was a mechanic and, no, her ship wasn't at all damaged, just a piece of crap, she irritably refused the backhanded insult/service and continued on her way. Double checking with Cab, who whistled tiredly and confirmed that no, there would be no more interruptions for the time being, she put the ship on auto and leaned back into the cockpit sleep, catching a good solid nap. She awoke much refreshed. Unfortunately she also woke to the screeching of a proximity alert and the equally startling howl of Cab's distress. Looming in front of her, blocking her flight path, was a Stathas-class freighter. It looked menacing. She opened a channel.

"Good evening!" a too-saccharine, falsely chipper voice poured into the cockpit and she winced. She could feel the others stir deep in her mind, alarmed by the new disruption. She pushed them back down. She wanted to handle this herself.

"Jennethe." She she said to the Weequay, Lord Blurgo's major domo. "To what do I owe the pleasure in this very random portion of space where I am literally minding my own business."

Jennethe chuckled. "Oh, Viz. You know your business is always Lord Blurgo's."

She did know that. All too well, in fact. "So, put that sleemo on the line, or does he have you doing all his headhunting for him now?"

There was a pause, then. "It would be highly advisable to watch what you say, considering you're in his space, and your ship is a little worse for wear." Once again, the weequay's voice was a pitch too high, too false.

Again with the ship slights. She took umbrage with the mention: her ship was literally fly-ready... the mods were fit, she's even managed to bypass the original Kuat designs and pressurized the cockpit for long distance. She even had a karking hyperdrive . "What do you need, Jen?" She asked, knowing full well exactly what he needed.

"The 10,000 UC you owe."

She hissed in regret. "Aw you know, that's exactly why I was making this run? I was going to get paid then double back 'round to drop it by."

"Sure." Jennethe agreed jovially. "I'm sure you were. It's just that we need it more immediately. In fact, Now would be splendid."

"I'm sure it would be, but I don't carry that kind of--"

A flash arced past her on her starboard side and she jumped, gripping her controls.

"That was a warning shot, Viz. Next time we wont miss."

And they wouldn't, that was a bluff.

"Oh, sure, let me just--" She fairly smashed a switch on the console, folding her wings and dropping well below the sightline of the freighter, then she hammered in the twin ion engine thrusters, turning at a break-neck pitch and then accelerating forward at a quality 5,000 Gs. right under her maximum acceleration speed.

"Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" Cab's classic 'droid-goes-fast' howl filled her headset and she sped toward the Shag Pabol hyperlane... where her thrusters finally whined to a stop, safely away from Blurgo's ship.

Viz took a breath and hit the autopilot. "Cab, make sure they aren't tailing."

She unclipped her crash webbing and slid her body into the cramped service area behind the cockpit seat. One of the blessings of being small (and a good mechanic) was the ability to wind-up your own repairs mid-flight.

No sooner had she wormed her way back into the cockpit did she hear a familiar voice...

"Chuba Pateesa!"

"SON OF A SCHUTTA!" She shouted to nobody.

Once more, her Raucous Hutt... friend... had appeared in the black before her.

"<What a coincidence!>" The creature chuckled in that low halfway-ironic way of his. The translator didn't do well with Hutt inflection.

"Is it?" She asked, not hiding the irony in her own tone.

The Raucous Hutt explained once more that he needed an armed escort to Nal Hutta. She grudgingly obliged, their passage only stopped once by another inconvenient spice caravan, this time only obstructing the flight path, not sandwiching there way through. She couldn't help but wonder what curse she had fallen under or what God she had displeased to cause her such a massively repetitive number of disruptions.

Once more, the Raucous Hutt was safely delivered on Nal Hutta and she entered the Ootmian Pabol hyperlane. The flight was smooth until just about Du Hutta, when suddenly the ship was upon her faster than she could adjust course.

The Bryn'adul ship didn't open any channels, they just started shooting. Viz folded and took a nosedive, angling sharply away from the vessel firing on her. A shot hit her flank, causing the vessel to shudder and vibrate dangerously. Without her having to ask, Cab rose deflectors and she tossed laser cannon function to him, maneuvering in a sharp corkscrew as fire sprayed out of her wing struts. However intimidating Bryn'adul patrol ships were, she had gotten lucky with this one, they had shab aim.

She jumped, leaving trails. Once out of range (thanking the force they didn't follow), she managed to regain control over the ship and use a second of quiet to recalibrate the HUD. The readout was spiking read and she hit the shutoff, aiming for a hard reset. The engines whined down, the ship in a dead mans float.

Unfortunately it was at that moment was interrupted by another transmission, the same drippy sweet voice once again. Jennethe. The Hutt ship approached once more out of the fine lines of folded space.

"Viz! We thought we lost you back there. Are you alright?"

"What do you care?" She was trying really hard to keep Stilza down. She didn't need her resident psychopath handling anything delicate.

"Business is business, money is money and all that." He paused. "Look, I appreciate the tenacity with which you approach your occupation, I really do but here you are, dead in the black. Perhaps this could turn into a mutually beneficial exchange. We tow you out and let you live, you pay us the outlandish sum you owe. "

Cab whistled in her headset. She hissed back at him, the comm on mute. "Of course we aren't dead. He doesn't need to know that though. If we can buy enough time to start her up again, we can outrun them." She hit the comm again, this time focused intently on keeping him talking while she ran start-up procedures. "Don't you even want to know what kind of cargo I'm after, Jen, aren't you the least bit curious?"

"Not in the least." the Weequay said dryly.

"I'll tell you anyway. Spor Crawlers, if you can believe it." The primary control interface was blinking steady. Even with the damage to her struts, she just had to punch it. "teeny tiny collection of the galaxy's deadliest eggs."

"You're stalling." His voice was low, now somewhat threatening.

"Damn right I am." She smashed the start levers and pushed hard on the acceleration. Even unable to fold at this dead stop the twin ion engines came on hot. She gave a mad whoop as she jumped to lightspeed, getting the ever living Frick out of Hutt space.

Or at least to a part of it where she could lie low.

END OF RUN
