Orinda

The Clans of Mandalore descended to the surface of Orinda in shifts, one research vessel at a time. Orinda’s history was as rife as the planet seemed barren. Not much but some traders, and the ruins of battles fought upon its’ surface and the surrounding space.

For all its’ seeming mundanity, Orinda had one resource the botanically and scientifically minded Mand’alor desired to investigate.

Vongspores. Once the domain of the Yuuzhan Vong, Orinda had been mostly untouched for hundreds of years, left fallow give or take. What sort of trace was left? Had the Vong evolved? Were there pockets deeper in the crust of the planet, or in its’ more isolated regions?

“Mando’ade, we require two groups. The main force will work with our scientists, and archaeologists to find and contain any Vongform or scientific anomalies we can find. Scan, take samples, contain. The second group will inspect the ruins of the Battle of Pellaeon. Find any useful intel, search for weapons, and technology, and meet with the dwindling naturalized Orindan population.

While we work down here on the ground, our navy will be securing the sector. Form your groups, and see you down on the surface. For Mandalore!” The Infernal’s visage disappeared from the Holocomm as she too took her place in the Vong Search team. She looked to her companions and with a nod pulled out her scientific scanner.

"Shall we?"

Deep within Orinda’s wild lands, a single Domain remained. Children raised in crèches begat children, begat children. Their ways watered down, culture remaining only in the genetic memory of their once-creations and the stories they hummed round the fire. Beat into each other through rites of pain. They stayed small in number, hidden from the immigrated humans, who held slim pockets on the western hemisphere of the planet.

The Yuuzhan Vong waited. The Domain Reshp’ul waited, keeping deep into the subterranean vaults, and tending the creations of the only Shaper, who remained among Domain Reshp’ul’s living.

Objective: (Whatever gets him killing Vong)

Vong. He'd heard tales of their ilk before, old stories of old wars and old horrors. Their kind was something in the galaxy he'd never killed before, and something he'd wanted to for some time. The culture intrigued him and reminded him of some of the ancient stories of the Sociph and their rites and trials. Very few on Antisoch still underwent the ritual scarring that had at one period not been uncommon, those that still participated in the esoteric practice were... less than stable. If the Vong had the mental state of a Sociph losing themselves to the Curse, Nicair was in for a treat.

He took his place without speaking near [member="Yasha Cadera"], he returned her nod with a small one of his own. His mind was occupied, not distant or unfocused, but occupied. The Sociph took a last big breath before he put outside thoughts aside. The time would come for everything else, now it was time to get to work.

Luke had heard of the Yuzhang Vong, creatures that had posed a threat to the entire galaxy and had been a dangerous enemy of force sensitives. Of course, he wasn't concerned about that presently, he was a Mandalorian, he didn't need the force to be a threat. He walked calmly among the group headed for the to work with the Researchers, he was not one himself, but he could be of assistance if things got troublesome and was quite interested in studying this things even if only by watching others do so.

Most importantly he did this because if there happened to be any of these creatures left, he felt this might be the place where he'd run into them. Or at least, if they were alive, he hoped this was the place.

The Vong, a terrible race, hopefully all dead, but the chances for that weren't good. No doubt some were out there somewhere, especially on former Vong planets, such as Orinda. It had belonged to them, but now, it would hopefully soon belong to the UCM. But to do that, they also had to explore and see what remained on the planet. Finding anything of value, especially from the Vong, was just a secondary objective, at least in Adenns eyes. But who knew, someone else might consider it a priority, cough Mand'alor cough.

Regardless of that though, Adenn would do his job, and do it well. While he didn't care much for archaeology, Adenn didn't want to deal with any natives at the moment, so he had decided to accompany the first group. As [member="Yasha Cadera"] spoke, Adenn nodded along, half listening, half examining the surroundings. Then once she stopped, Adenn returned his attention to her and returned her nod with his own. Grinning slightly behind his helmet, Adenn walked up to stand near her, still grinning. Wherever the Mand'alor led, he'd follow.

[SIZE=11pt]The thought floated through the pilot’s head as his silver gaze stared out towards the great emptiness of space, the vastness of such causing the man to drift his gaze towards the planet whose orbit was the only thing stopping the ship from drifting further into the abyss which is open-space. “Ma’am… he tried to order orbitals.”

“And when he was denied?”

“He… Australis turned and went down to the surface, Ma’am. He obeyed…” The commline seemed to go dead, as Yasha and the Australis Captain in orbit lingered in disquiet.

Kaine followed orders. The breath seized from Yasha’s lungs, as she held to the side of the shuttle and paused from moving forward. Her husband finally understood. He followed orders, and didn’t do anything rash.

The relief was palpable.

“Understood. Hold position, and continue your mission, Captain. Have the special cargo prepped.” Good soldiers waited as Yasha finished her comm and tapped at her helm.

“Elek, Mand’alor.” The Captain’s voice ceased. Yasha looked out to Orinda, knowing her curiosity brought her to this place. A once vong-shaped world. MandalBioEng needed more samples to improve the quality of their work, and Yasha had to understand…

… she craved to understand the threat the Yuuzhan Vong once was, in case they rose and rose again. Once Kaine’s Australis forces met the others, Yasha gave him a single nod. A single transmission to Kain’ik’s buy’ce.

‘Trust me, c’yare.’

“Stay ready. Shoot without mercy. Keep in formation, watch each others’ backs… if there are Vong alive so close to Mandalore, I want the only memory of them to be samples catalogued for our scientists. Let’s go.”

Yasha held her rifle Vulcan across her body, barrel pointed down but ready for whatever came next.

EDfUZH1.gif

A pair of eyes quivered in the loam. One centred on the Mandalorians, the other on their possible trajectory. The amphistaff slithered forth, through the foliage and ground to its’ warrior. Creatures with machine-skins. Warriors carrying weapons of metal approached.

Mandalorians.

Unlike the Domains of the Yuuzhan Vong’s invasion days, the Domain of Agony was made up of what some would call a sacrilegious collection of Vong from variant castes. Warriors, and Shapers, all. They crept into the depths, cannibalizing the body parts of their dead as their shapers continued to develop what they could to once more become known… to be known and to die in pain as service to their totalitarian and vicious gods.

Survivors, who refused to go quietly, and sought a more glorious end. Zealots. The warrior, who picked up his amphistaff sunk down, watching as the Mandalorians came to a copse of trees with odd markings.

Strange chemical compositions. There, in the undergrowth, polyps with immature amphistaff tentacles grew. Hungry mouths lashing for anything they could bring back to the ground mouth at the centre of the polyp. The area seemed wild, but tended. Paths trekked by common footprints.

Little did the Mand’alor know this was the place she died. A proper sacrifice to Yun-Yammka they would be.

Noah slowly drummed his fingers against the side of his rifle, the rhythmic clanking of phrik against the alloy construction of his rifle soothing him as the shuttle finally landed. Noah made one final check over his gear. Rifle, shotgun, pistols, sword, knives and blade were all secure in their various carrying points around his body as he exited the shuttle, eyes scanning the surroundings.

Behind Noah ten members of the Corek Supercommandos, the most elite of the Clan Corek warriors, came. Armed and armored in almost identical gear as Noah they exuded the same vigilance and caution as the old soldier did. They would take up position on either side of Noah, five on his left and five on his right, all evenly spaced out as to not get killed by a single attack. It would be obvious to anyone who took a closer look that they were highly trained and experienced, one could simply tell by the way they held their weapons.

The Vong. Noah had once fought against the Vong. Just another horror to the list. Vong. Bando Gora, hell even the undead. In his fifty-four years Noah had seen alot, and killed alot. Of course he was nowhere close to stopping killing things so here he was.

Tyran Numeck

Mandalorian Supercommando
Tyran knew the stories of the Yuuzhan Vong, his family had fought them during their original invasion of the galaxy so he knew what they were capable of as soldiers and the utter violence they were capable of as a species. That was why he understood Kaine's uneasiness for the Vong, hell he shared that uneasiness with the Alor of Clan Australis. Tyran was fully equipped with every weapon he could carry *see bio* because he was not going to take any chances down on the surface. He stood among the other Cadera soldiers as they silently waited for the Mand'alor to finish her conversation, his modular rifle set in the assault configuration was cradled in his arms.

As their shuttle landed and the ramp lowered Tyran followed Yasha down the ramp scanning the area for immediate threats. "Not seeing any heat signatures, nothing that's big enough to be a Vong at any rate." He said as his hand gripped the handle of his rifle tighter. With their ability to create advanced organic technology though Tyran was only going to trust his helmet scanners so much. It had been a while since there had been conflict with the Vong, who knew what kind of organic horrors they'd cooked up in that time.

He kept his pistol out and his tomahawk in the other hand. Choosing to forgo the use of heavier weaponry was a risk, this much is certain when facing an adversary like the Vong. But at close range, his hand cannon Hullcracker had the opportunity to do as much if not more than a standard rifle, and it was easier to maneuver with Nicair's chosen fighting style. In any case, it made him feel better having options. It had been awhile since he felt this on-edge during an operation.

Years of hunting both sentient and non-sentient entities told him one thing.

"We're being stalked."

Objective: Observe

A snow white owl sat and watched the fighting that was sure to become far worse soon enough, its eyes focusing on a Mandalorian that the owl tracked. Near the white owl was a blade held in a scabbard, hanging by a broken branch and moving with the wind. It was an odd pair, the owl about the size of a dwarf and far larger than one would expect, its wingspan quite significant but nothing about it seemed to be off other than that. It did not move, did not interact with the beings around it, it just remained where it was and cautiously watched the Mandalorians and tracked the movement of those below.

Soon though, it would lean forward and look at [member="Yasha Cadera"], focusing on the woman and ruffling its feathers as the owl watched for a few seconds and then turning its eyes on [member="Tyran Numeck"] and now listening to the man as he mentioned something about heat signatures. The Owl's head turned and its eyes ran along the forest floor, looking for something interesting or something it could deal with, not finding anything yet and going back to its stillness.

It was then that the slightest of movement caught the creature's attention and milky eyes opened, turning on the direction of the sound and waiting before seeing a shift. The Owl watched, not making any more movement than that and then shifting its body to stare in the direction that the creature had been in. The Owl did not move still, not leaving its branch and simply waiting to see what would come of the situation. Perhaps there would be something interesting that came out of what was going on, perhaps there would be something different.

The owl waited, watching as another being shot up the side of the tree and sat next to it, a small white furred wolf that was still smaller than it. The owl and the wolf exchanged one glance before turning their eyes on the Mandalorians once more.

Luke followed the others quietly, he was a good fighter, but he had no experience with the Yuzhang Vong but through stories. He knew however they had been a terror to the galaxy at one time. He patiently listened, trying to keep his ears, eyes, and senses open to any watchers. He wasn't too particularly familiar with most of the people here, but that would have to be fine. They were not here for camaraderie, they were here because of a threat.

Like Tyran he didn't catch any signs, but [member="Nicair Claden"] still mentioned they were being watched. He let out a breath, and brought it back in, tapping the side of his weapon and waiting. Couldn't really attack off of instinct, all he could do was wait to see what the others decided to do. He was quite ready if they decided to go full assault. But didn't have anything to add verbally.

Cassiopeia had come along solely as an intrigued genetic scientist. It wasn't every day someone could get samples of vong or vong related materials. And with the reality being of a galaxy dominated by Force sensitives, it was important to have all possible technological explorations available to be researched. And so, Cassi came along in a small suit of armor along with a backpack full of scientific devices.

She stood to the edge of where the others were, mostly focused in on the possible wildlife samples of the planet. She hoped that the others would be more preoccupied, although she had a couple guards herself that followed next to her. She, in truth, just hadn't been in the mood to deal with fighting herself but wanted to be apart of the the exploration. It was time she got out more, right? Milla was adjusting well enough. Lily seemed happy, especially with her new sister.

Things were looking up. Slowly, but surely. Cassiopeia kneeled as she examined what looked like in honesty bones before something told her to look up. And behold, in the distance she noticed someone beskar. She squinted, having her buy'ce attached to her belt. "Do we know who's on that overpass?" She asked, with the guards with her shaking their heads. Nope.

"Huh. Anyone?"

“I don’t recognize that armour… someone chime him, see who we’ve got to help.” Yasha said, looking up at the Mandalorian on the ridge. She subconsciously prodded Cassie behind her, knowing the scientist wasn’t as much of a fighter as the rest.

“Yes, Claden… I believe you’re right… raise guns. Shoot on sight.” Yasha nodded to Nicair, and the others, glad for the addition of her vod Tyran, and of Noah and Clan Corek’s soldiers.

The warrior sunk into the undergrowth, clicks and chitters resounding around him. Chazrach flickered round, coming down both slender hills at a crawl. The Mandalorians were, indeed, being stalked.

“C’yare, watch your six. We’re encountering Vong. They're not just alive, they've got shapers.” She sent an image of the amphistaff polyps to Kaine, as she grit her teeth, and switched over to the full-comms channel. “Well… let’s get on with it. Prepare for incursion. Weapons at the ready, Cass. Once these things stop writhing, take some samples, eh?”

Taking a grenade from her belt, Yasha tossed it into the copse of amphistaff polyps and trees. Three… two…. one….

KaFWOOOM.

Shrieks and screams stole across the scenery, as the inbred reptoid Chazrach charged at this terrible affront to their Masters’ living weapons.

On the ridge, the Yuuzhan Vong warrior rose up and shrieked, causing his collective forces to charge. They appeared not to have ranged weapons, but they had ever increasing numbers.

Yasha immediately raised her machine gun, the formidably extreme Vulcan Noah built her, and sprayed fire into the Chazrach ranks. The Vulcan boomed with every slug a crackling thunderclap out of the barrel. It made mince of the unarmoured Chazrach she targeted.

“Ooohhh ohoh hoh hoh hoooh Noah, I love this fekking gun!” Yasha cackled darkly, getting to the extermination at hand.

In the caves, scuffling feet could be picked up on audio scans. The cave itself began to rumble, the rocks themselves shivering as if to ward off the entering Mandalorians.. right... before the entrance began to cave in.

The numbers that advanced upon them were thrilling to say the least. They were outnumbered, that much was certain. Rushing into the fray would be far from the intelligent move at the moment. It didn't take much for him to position his body in such a way that should the occasional Vong get close enough he could dispatch it with a combination of tomahawk, knees, elbows, shins, feet and whatever other body part he felt he needed to while also maintaining a decent line of fire with his hand cannon.

It had been some time since he had truly seen what the Hullcracker could do against living targets. The destructive power that the Sociph put into the already powerful disruptor pistol was something he always enjoyed seeing. Entire sections of the Vong bodies blew away with the cracking boom of the barrel.

Though, like with any creature using swarm tactics, once one fell two more took its place. There was a part of him that wanted to rush forward, that call to make a dangerous decision for the glory. It had been some time since he'd experienced such a feeling. Intriguing.

Contrary to many Mandalorian stereotypes Noah actually didn't prefer heavy weapons, being a firm believer that a sniper rifle properly utilized could produce the same effective as a rocket launcher fried wildly. That being said he understood there was a time and place for such things and face a horde of Vong and Vong creatures was certainly a time and place for such things. The wave and overwhelming numbers tactics of the Vong reminded him of his old days in the Omega Pyre fighting the Bando Gora. Such nostalgia was amplified when Noah slung his rifle from his hip and reached for his back to pull out a classic.

An Omega Mk I Bolter, a weapon synonymous with the old Omega Pyre. Deftly swinging the weapon from his slung place on his shoulder Noah he racked the charging handle, chambering the Bolters 30mm high explosive grenade payload. Shouldering the weapon Noah had to admit a grin came to his face under his helmet as he squeezed the trigger and let loose the payload. Just because he didn't prefer heavy weapons didn't mean he couldn't enjoy himself, besides it had been awhile since he had fired a Bolter. The grenade flew a good twenty meters before exploding in a airburst above its target, shredding a small group of Vong with shrapnel, explosive and concussive force.

Along with the tell-tale firing of his squad of Supercommandos and their rifles Noah picked up the distinct signature of the weapon he had crafted for Yasha. "Ha! I thought you'd like it Yash!" Swinging his Bolter around again he laid waste to another small grouping of Vong who were getting a little too close for comfort. If they could just keep them outside of the ten meter danger zone Noah could keep pounding them with the Bolter....

He was clearing down a deeper part of the cave when he heard the loud sound of a familiar voice and then the ravenous sounds of the vong and blaster fire and the use of the chain sword, He followed these sounds he made his way to the source as he was close enough he saw Kaine Australis and his squad surrounded by vong soldiers from all over, One thing triggered in the Anubian's brain, It wasn't anger but it was a twisted sense of enjoyment as he saw before him not vong but things to rip and tear apart one things for certain...He was glad he dawned his Gam today. The owl watched the battle erupt and it’s eyes rolled over the combatants, dissecting them and running over them with a hungry gaze. The owl wished to join the conflict as it moved along the branch, shaken from its frozen position and silently conversing with the small wolf nearby. The two were still outside the area of conflict, though barely so as a blaster bolt tore through the air nearby.

Damned monsters and hardened warriors tearing apart the world around them and the owl just watched, its wings flapping and soo. It hovered enough for it to retrieve the sheathed blade before changing locations and putting itself out of the line of fire. Soon enough the wolf would run after the owl, joining it on the branch of the new tree and resuming its rested position.

The two kept a close eye on one person each. The owls eyes remained glued to [member="Yasha Cadera"] while the wolf focused in on [member="Noah Corek"], each beings of importance for the creatures, each someone needed to be protected if things took a turn for the worst. The worry was small though, trust in the abilities of the two individuals far outweighing the worry.

The owls mind stirred though, looking below as a few attempted to flank the Mandalorians. With a glance at the wolf, the two swiftly agreed and the owl turned its eyes on the Vong attempting to sneak closer. The owls eyes shifted, its feathers glowing for a moment as the force stirred and erupted from its body, reaching out to the forested area and roots soon reached out to grab the few vong by the legs.

As the roots gripped tight on the legs of the vong, they would start pulling down, the ground shifting as roots moved and the earth became unstable and soft. The vong would be slowly pulled down, sinking into the forest ground and the roots around and below them moving the dirt out of the way. It was a slow process and soon the creatures radiated a sickening fear as their voices grew loud. It would not last long though, their necks and heads falling below the ground and dirt being moved over them, the roots moving to cage their bodies under the ground.

And soon, the owl returned its eyes to Yasha Cadera, watching silently and waiting for if it’s help is needed.

He ordered the troops holding the line to head back up the cave as he with one swipe slammed his hammer hard into the ceiling of the of the cave behind them.

The strike caused debris to collapse onto the swarming Vong soldiers until the cave was sealed to prevent other vong from coming through.

He then proceeded to make his way to the fields where Kaine already was there with his newest kill being the big vong monstrosity.

The field was ablaze.

Between the various series’ of weapons fire and explosive ordinance being used against the ensuing Chazrach and Yuuzhan Vong rushing their position, the three foot high brush caught. Smoke billowed.

Vulcan boomed into silence as the last of the belt-loaded ammunition ran dry. The unconsciously hot barrel dipped as Yasha set it down and back. She reached for her hammer, the Rekr Karyatesa, and growled.

“Prepare for melee!” Those with an increased ranged ammunition would be well to continue firing, but like [member="Nicair Claden"], Yasha hungered for blood on her hands. Vong blood.

The decrepit race, who attempted to destroy all purity and blessing, and sent her riduur into decades of twitching discomfort. Her HUD sparked with the Clan Australis Alor and soldiers rushing to the copse and glade.

[member="Kaine Australis"] went down, his vitals blaring in the side of Yasha’s constant flow of intel in her HUD. “[member="Cassiopeia Caranthyr"]! Help Kaine, he’s wounded!”

Surrounded, Yasha grinned underneath her wolf-helm. Larger vongformed beasts trundled in, slow moving but strong enough to quake the ground.

[member="Ambrose Cadera"], Tuulu and the gurlanin howled in, past [member="Skorvek"] and [member="Noah Corek"]. Past [member="Raiz Australis"], and [member="Varian"], to surge into battle with voxyn, vongformed vornskyr, all clones of their one once-voxyn queen.

“Get your wounds tended my love… I’ll be fine.” Yasha’s voice was calm and level, as she swung her war hammer into a vongformed beast. Lightning arced across the hammer and into the gigantic multi-fanged maw. It shivered, a section of its’ torso missing and spewing green ichor on the ground.

“Yronwulf, coordinate with Corek, and Varian! Give us a kill zone. Captain Kierke… release Cuyan.” Ducking under a swing from another lumbering maw, Yasha uppercut with her hammer, and flung herself up and through the beast’s jaw. It yelped and seethed, rushed in a berzerk attempt to destroy the pain it was rife within.

In the sky, four drop pods ensued on their position like bullets from a massive cannon. Within the drop pods, marauding killers. A genetic experiment so insane all he knew to do was kill and kill again. Destroy whatever was in front of him.

Cuyan. The last of Kaine and Yasha’s genetic sired supersoldiers. An owl flew over head. Yasha turned to check that Cassie was in a safe position.

It cost her.

The jaw-less vongformed beast lunged, tearing its’ three arms into the meat of her shoulder and right arm. Yasha roared and tumbled backward, the speed at which the beast had been moving knocking them both into a backward rolling tumble. She swung her hammer and knocked the beast into a daze.

Its’ arms remained locked upon her. The war hammer fell from her grip in the tumult. She grunted and kicked… too late.

The beast and Yasha tumbled over the cliff a mere 75 metres from the main Mandalorian position.

For a sickening moment, Yasha was aware of the fate before her: freefall. Her greatest fear. Her stomach fell as she did - weightless before the gravity of Orinda took the tangle of Mandalorian and Vong limbs into a bitter freefall.

Yasha’s scream was short. Trunkated by the sound of a smash. Rending beskar. The immediate cessation of her biofeed in [member="Kaine Australis"] and Noah Corek’s HUD.

The cliff was not sheer. Yasha and the Vong creature slammed and twisted against the jagged rock, her body spinning without a single chance to right herself.

If… there was anything inside the armour to right at all.
