"You can just call me Elian, I'm definetly no Lord." The young man responded with a small smirk. "And unfortunately no, there isn't too much light I can shed on what is being discussed." Elian took a deep breath as he looked over to them both. "I do know that Alderaan is one of the topics. The King of Naboo, Chancellor, Jedi Fanatics and such, are in attendance."

Elian cleared his throat before looking ahead, as they neared their location. "Your voices will be needed, they are just beyond that door." Elian sent message to Senator Stuyveris about their arriva. "Senator, they are here, awaiting your word."

Amusement danced in Aurelian's eyes as the roundtable devolved into predictable political friction. The sheer weight of the collective panic in the room was delicious, a perfect cure for the mind-numbing boredom of the Senate. He adjusted his stance, letting a smile slip across his features as he watched the Bothan spymaster pace like a caged animal. Damos Rennar wanted blood and a loosened leash, a classic soldier's lament.

"My dear Director Rennar," Aurelian chimed in, his voice dripping with smooth, aristocratic charm. He leaned forward, resting his palms on the edge of the holographic display. "You ask what more resources we possess? What could this Republic possibly give you that we haven't already bled for? You speak of fronts appearing daily, yet you beg for a declaration of total war as if a title changes the count of our ships. The resources are here, standing around this very table. We simply require the spine to use them."

Turning his gaze toward the masked Jedi Master, Aurelian offered a sharp, approving nod. The mystics usually put him to sleep with their talk of the Force, but the ancient soldier under that mask actually possessed a mind for strategy. Corellia was an inspired suggestion.

"For once, I find myself in complete agreement with the Jedi Council," Aurelian declared, gesturing toward Master San Tekka. "Corellia is the key. If the intelligence reports regarding the recent incursions from Moorja and New Cov are accurate, those Black Wall Sith are already aggressively pushing their power base directly toward the Deep Core. They are consolidating, trying to link their territories."

Spurring the holographic map to rotate with a flick of his finger, Aurelian pointed directly to the shining beacon of the Corellian system, then back to Alderaan. The logic of the battlefield was finally aligning with his own political desires.

"Corellia must become our primary staging ground to bottleneck and blunt the Black Wall advance," Aurelian explained, his tone sharpening with genuine intent. "By securing the shipyards there, we establish an unbreakable defensive line that shields the Mid Rim. Meanwhile, we utilize Alderaan exactly as intended: a forward launchpad to drive a dagger straight into the heart of the Core. We squeeze them between two fronts of our own making, rather than reacting to theirs."

Damos gave a curt nod. He wasn’t here to engage in verbal jousting with the King. He was here as the advisor and commander of the military forces; not a politician.

"You can only squeeze a Shuura Fruit so much until it breaks rather than offering juice.” He turned towards the briefing table, at the displays presented by the rest of the group. A question of reliable Intelligence caused the fur on his neck to raise in frustration. Reliable?

“The King is correct. Corellia should be fortified immediately. The shipyards are too important to lose, they’ve already added to our ship building tariffs by roughly twenty percent. If we're serious about containing the Black Wall's advance, and we should be, that is where the line must be drawn. Although concern still lingers on if the coreward Sith and the Sith Empire are as mutual as we fear, any intercepting tendrils could spark a civil war that would be catastrophic for our border worlds."

His gaze shifted briefly to Alderaan's marker.

"Despite the political realities surrounding Alderaan, it does remain one of the strongest positions available to us. Republic world or not, we'd be fools not to use it. Fortify it. Supply it. Turn it into a bastion. Between that and the cloning facilities being instated on Malastare we should be able to maintain a stronghold until we have the resources…" He eyed Aurelian. “...To launch into the Sith held territories and push back the tide.”

The Bothan folded his arms.

"The strategy is sound and I can support it with what we have. The question is whether the senate is prepared to act on it before the enemy removes our opportunity."

Ala had remained quiet, sitting in her overly big chair, and feeling rather uncomfortable with the edge this conversation held. When she finally rose from her seat, the diminutive Jedi Master looked small amongst the gathered statesmen, senators, nobles, and commanders. Yet her voice carried clearly enough.

"I am grateful to hear motivation to regain Tython." Her gaze briefly moved between Ravessa Gallio, Master San Tekka, and even Colette, who had wisely chosen restraint. "The Jedi Order on Naboo recently welcomed its eight hundredth member. That is a blessing I do not take lightly. We are rebuilding. We are healing. Yet we are not yet as the Orders of old, and we will not be for many years yet."

Ala folded her hands before her. "Tython remains dear to many of us. But I would not spend the lives of tomorrow's Jedi to reclaim yesterday's home."

Her eyes drifted toward the holographic projection of Alderaan. "As such, Tython offers little incentive where Jedi support is concerned. Whether it remains occupied or is reclaimed does not change the counsel I would offer today."

For a moment she seemed to consider her next words carefully. "The question before you today is moral as much as it is strategic. What sort of Republic do you intend to be?"

The room had spoken often of fleets, resources, fronts, and logistics. All very important, even necessary, things. Yet they were not the heart of the matter.

"If the Republic invited Alderaan into its fold. If it promised protection. Should that promise mean anything, then they must be honoured when doing so is difficult, not merely when it is convenient." She inclined her head slightly toward Master San Tekka. "Corellia is critical. Yet worlds are easier to reclaim than principles. Advance carefully, hold what you gain, and do not place your faith in discord amongst the Sith. They will find common cause if the Republic presents them with one."

A faint smile touched her lips then, small and weary. "We are stretched thin. We all know it. Yet if we abandon our word because honouring it is costly, then we surrender something far more difficult to reclaim than territory."

Cynan entered the war table room later than most who were already in deep conversation, he had planned on arriving on time but got delayed in dealing with matters on Corellia. He breathed in deeply as he noted the members of the senate, the King of Naboo and several Jedi amongst many others in the room. Cynan made no qualms with barging his way through the crowd to the centre.

"I thought there was a reason for the tips of my ears to be burning." Cynan joked in a friendly matter, resting on his cane a little, "I would like to avoid Corellia being used as the hub for invasion or military force. However, we are on the borders of the High Republic space and the increased protection and fortification of our world to ensure that any retaliation from the Sith does not destroy Corellia or leave us vulnerable to the Sith's control would be greatly appreciate."

Looking over to the chancellor, "recent memory of imperial control and genocide still lingers in the minds of many Corellians." The Galactic Empire's impact on Corellia as well as the attempts made by a renegade imperial that caused Cynan to become captured and tortured. He was not wanting to risk the lives of his people further without guarantees. "The people of Alderaan do not deserve to live in fear, however, one could argue none of the Core Worlds deserve to live in such despair."

"If we go to war with the Sith Covenant over Alderaan, I would argue that we need to not stop with Alderaan since they will not just accept that. The Core Worlds need to be liberated from the Sith oppression. The people of Coruscant deserve our help just as much as Alderaanians do." While Cynan was not thrilled with the idea of fighting or war, he also knew that the Sith Covenant have not been people willing to talk or listen. He breathed in deeply, it was not a joyous moment in his mind.

A lone brow lifted as people spoke. When Cynan Obaith Cynan Obaith weighed in, it lowered and Dominique turned to regard him. "We will not fashion Corellia into a shield that bears the brunt of reprisal, Cynan. But as you know, it is on the edge and at risk of assault. Our forces will gather around you to stave off the brunt of any reaction the Covenant levies, however." A corner of her lips hiked upward as she reached out to gently touch the man's upper arm.

Her eyes turned toward Aurelian Veruna Aurelian Veruna next. "Corellia is far too remote a planet to shield Naboo, on the other hand. So, as her King, I hope you will not mind if the Republic spares resources to fortify its system." The Chancellor smiled, but it was more statement than request. It was far closer to the BlackWall than she would like, and Sith enjoyed bombastic and performative acts.

They seemed in earnest to proclaim Alderaan and Corellia the hammer and anvil of defeating the Sith. And that could very well be the case for The Core and the Sith Covenant. The Sith Order, on the other hand, was a different matter entirely. Such factions hardly needed to connect their territories to be a threat. They already bordered a great deal of Republic territory as things were.

"Make no mistake," Dominique regarded those in attendance, "if this progresses beyond Alderaan the Sith Order will get involved. Perhaps not with a direct assault, but their number will still be among the Covenant's forces. If there is any illusion we shall not require the Mandalorian Empire's services in these times, I suggest you put them away and direct efforts to ensuring sufficient capital for when the time comes." All of which was predicated on the assumption the Mand'alore Aether Verd Aether Verd wouldn't decline to participate because Srina Talon might take the field. Hopefully a lone -- albeit powerful -- person would be the only one exempt from Mandalorian hostilities, rather than they decline any participation. That was a strategic problem of her concern to manage; the Council seemed taken with the idea of this being a straight forward matter.

At last, Dominique's chin lifted and her smile grew. "Fortunate that the Republic has such a thorough and intelligent Security Council to prepare for troubling times. One unanimously in agreement concerning the need to defend both Alderaan and Corellia." Did anyone care to be the lone or first dissenter? She noticed none of them jumped on fawning over her demand they present a unified public front. That was fine. This declarative moment would be enough if any thought to run to the media later about being the sole voice of 'reason.'

The Sith wouldn't be much amused, of course, to matters of the day's discourse. Though, really, would they complain? Dominique doubted it. Convincing those present that pressing beyond Alderaan was only giving the Sith exactly what they wanted, however, would be difficult in this meeting. The fervor was in favor of action, which she didn't disagree with for the worlds in question. So, the Chancellor would continue her efforts to establish a dialogue with the Sith. In the long-run, both sides would benefit even if the public and private personas might seem at odds.

Right now though, he had to stop, dead in his tracks.

An advance patrol of Sith Troopers was moving closer to the Forest.

They were not here yet, they may just turn back. He could let this play out, but the chance of them stumbling upon his traps was a problem. If he acted too soon, then they might be revealed prematurely and for nothing. He would just let this play out and see what they do.

So he waited.

He waited and watched as the patrol moved closer, his breath steady and quiet, his enhanced senses picking up the rhythmic thud of the troopers’ boots against the forest floor. The closer they got, the more the tension coiled in his muscles, ready to spring into action at a moment. He would not reveal himself unless absolutely necessary but when he did, it would be swift, decisive and the last thing any of them would ever see.

So he waited.

Another step and he would act. None of them took it. The team leader waved them off. Not because he saw something, but because he saw nothing. Nothing that was worth his time in his eyes. No shame in that, they were professionals, but so was Connel. They would have been dead if they had taken another step. He still had to make sure that this was not some kind of feint.

So he waited.

Ten steps and one of them stopped and turned around. Looking back the way they had come. Was this a security move or did he hear something? The silent moment stretched, then Connel shifted just enough to glimpse a glint of metal reflected in the frost. He counted to three, exhaled once, and stepped from the shadows, weapon ready, ensuring every motion was measured and unseen until the moment of truth arrived. It did not.

So he waited.

Ten more steps and another turn. This was no different than the one before. Wait a minute, it was. The “stop” signal, a lift of a closed fist. All of them froze, and turned around. What was it that they had seen as they were making their way back. They were doing so with purpose now, weapons were leveled in front of them and they were shifting into a cover formation. They were looking for something, and not just a fight. It made Connel mentally go over his processes, as if looking for what he might have missed.

Then he did what he didn’t want to. He relied on the Force here, reaching out and altering their environment, making the troopers see nothing different in front of them, only local wildlife running out of the bushes and by them, that was that then, right? There was nothing to see or worry about, just fauna being fauna. Which meant that the three other troopers were now teasing their compatriot for seeing things and being jumpy. They hadn’t left the area, but they were on their way.

So he waited.

When it was finally clear, Connel emerged and set up a couple of early warning sensors. Into the ground, ones that were not necessarily detectable by most scanners and would give the people of Crevasse more time to prepare. He had no idea what the Empire was still doing here, but he knew that the troopers would not be alone. There would be others, and they would not be hesitant to slaughter. The people of Crevasse needed as many advantages as they could get.

The transport would pick Connel up in an hour.

So he waited.

Jocelyn and Theron entered and were met by Verity Stuyveris Verity Stuyveris , who after a polite greeting guided them over toward the war table. "Chancellor, fellow Senators, assembled guests: may I present Lady Jocelyn Panteer, Duchess of House Panteer, and her husband Lord Theron of House Alde? Duchess, Duke -- Chancellor Dominique Vexx Dominique Vexx , King Aurelian Veruna Aurelian Veruna of Naboo, Damos Rennar Damos Rennar , and my colleagues in the Senate: Cynan Obaith Cynan Obaith , Ayumi Pallopides Ayumi Pallopides , and Ravessa Gallio Ravessa Gallio , as well as ambassador Helios Ardemark Helios Ardemark ." She gestured toward the Jedi contingent. "And representatives of our esteemed Jedi Council."

The Duchess followed along with the introductions, trying to commit faces to names, nodding and smiling at each as they were introduced.

"I am pleased to meet you all," Jocelyn said, lifting her chin. "Welcome to Alderaan. I'm afraid the situation here has become even more unsteady since the death of Duke Denrin. The longer this interregnum continues, the greater the risk that the threat of violence will spill out of the gardens and estates of the nobility and into the streets. It is my hope that with the help of the High Republic we can bring this crisis to a close with minimal bloodshed."

She half turned to Verity. "Your Senator Stuyveris has been very -- thorough -- in her questioning of the pedigree and politics of House Panteer, but I understand she is but one woman. So I present myself in hopes that we will solidify the partnership between my house and the High Republic and develop a strategy to move forward together to end the threat of the Sith Covenant."

As a rule Theron was not nervous during engagements such as these, but today was an exception. While he trusted his wife and knew her to excel in whatever she put her mind to, Theron was concerned about the public. They had attempted to vet them as best they could, but there were always going to be surprises.

It had happened during the trip to meet Duke Gant, when Aurelian had practically ambushed Jocelyn with his unique diplomatic strategy. It could happen now too.

But he was a well-matched husband, because he had little in ways of his own ambition and would do anything to support Jocelyn. In this case, stay silent, listen (while being quietly proud) and watch the reaction of the people in the room. They was always intelligence to be gleaned from how people responded, both outwardly and subtly.

Later on he'd be able to share that with Jocelyn and perhaps it would help her too.

So for now, Theron listened, smiling with a nod to his wife when their eyes met. To try and reassure her, that she was doing well.

The moral pontificating of the Jedi Master earned a dismissive roll of Aurelian's shoulders. Honor and principles made for lovely bedtime stories, but they rarely won wars or protected borders. Turning his attention back to Dominique, a sharp grin tugged at his lips when the Chancellor mentioned fortifying the Naboo system. They after all, were close to the Black Wall.

"I would expect nothing less, Chancellor," Aurelian replied, tilting his head in acknowledgment. "Naboo will gladly accept the extra garrisons. We must ensure the home of this here Republic remains quite untouchable while we fight this war."

The arrival of the Alderaanian nobility broke the tense tactical debate. Watching Lady Jocelyn Panteer and Lord Theron enter the underground chamber provided a welcome distraction from the drab military uniform styling the rest of the room. Aurelian stood to welcome them.

"Ah, the guests of the hour," Aurelian announced, his voice carrying a regal warmth. He gestured toward the newly arrived Duchess with an open hand, addressing the room at large. "Rest assured, my colleagues, I have witnessed Lady Panteer's diplomatic handiwork firsthand. If anyone possesses the refinement to navigate the treacherous waters of the Alderaanian courts and oust the Sith sympathizers, it is her. House Panteer has my complete confidence."

Stepping closer to the holographic display, Aurelian waved his hand over the glowing star chart to bring the strategic markers into clear focus for the newcomers. The glowing icons of Alderaan and Corellia pulsed against the blue light.

"To bring you up to speed, Duchess," Aurelian explained, his gaze shifting between Jocelyn and the rest of the roundtable. "We have just agreed to draw a hard defensive line at Corellia to blunt the Black Wall advance, while simultaneously turning Alderaan into our primary staging ground for a direct push into the Core. We are mapping the future of your homeworld."

Leaning back against the edge of the table with an inviting smile. "Please, Lady Panteer, honor us with your perspective. And to the rest of the council, let us hear if anyone has further objections to this hammer and anvil approach."

Together, accompanied by Master Satyur Vaal, Taren Sol, and Lyra Venn, the four experienced Jedi would find themselves at the base of Crevasse City, now walking alongside the local populace that resided there. The two Jedi Knights, Masters Sol and Venn, took the lead, albeit spreading themselves out in order to greet any who looked to be in need. Some were rushing to collect their valuables and leave, while others were determined to stay, refusing to abandon their homes even in such uncertain times.

Jido Myyse walked alongside the Devaronian Master, Vaal, as they took in the City's unique beauty, dampened by the prospect of conflict reaching everyday people's lives. Jido sighed quietly to himself, having seen much of the effect of war on those who held little stake in it. Civilian life was the greatest incentive for the High Republic to endeavour to fight, yet these good people had no control over how such conflicts would be fought, nor when, nor where. They were forced to either trust their leaders or seek sanctuary elsewhere. It was Jido's hope that seeing the presence of the Jedi might offer some small reassurance, that they were not alone.

The Devaronian Master sensed in Jido the smaller one's discontent, turning to look upon his fellow Master studiously; "I share your concern, Jido" he spoke the little one's name, having risen alongside one another in the Order; "Yet Alderaan has many allies. Should the Sith seek to attack, it will be a difficult battle".

Jido turned his gaze to the Devaronian, a chortle of amusement escaping him as he smiled in response to Satyur Vaal's consideration. "All battles are difficult, my friend. Some, devastating for those caught in its wake, such as these folk, not to mention the effect on the land itself," he replied, not out of goading but out of cynical humour, a momentary allowance. "We must ensure preparations are made to aid in their recovery. Reparations for damages to their livelihood. Much will need to be rebuilt, be it homes or hope for these people," he concluded. Too often, he had seen such tumultuous events come to pass; too easily were wars started, yet so challenging to end. Even when peace was finally struck, it was the commonfolk who continued to struggle long after the fact, carrying the physical and psychological scars from their homeworld's siege.

Jido Myyse would personally petition the Jedi Council to remain on Alderaan during its time of recovery, to assist with whatever endeavours were required of him. There was no task too big or too small; the importance lay in the service provided, and the people of Alderaan would need all the support the Jedi could offer should conflict reach their system.

Alderaan.
But not as it once was.

He sat in the room listening to the mewling of honeyed words with a cloying sickness. A few spoke plainly. Others played the game of diplomatic fencing.

Not for the first time did he wonder why he accepted the title of Viceroy, err, Senator of Siskeen.
His brother remained President on Olanet which left the honor of representing the Siskeen system to himself.

Honor.

The word nearly made him spit. But in the presence of so many nobles, ambassadors, senators, Jedi, and random delegates he managed to quell the impulse.

However he still rolled his glowing blue eyes.

He didn't fit in with the crowd. That was certain. Instead of regale garments or robes he reclined in his typical attire. Tan tunic and trousers with his rugged bantha hide leather jacket.
Let the others crowd the table and preen. He cared little for the game of diplomacy. That wasn't why he was here.

Standing behind him was his daughter. Composed and silent in a USC black uniform, she often reminded him of his brother. And of her own mother. She was the reason he was here. Family ties. Ner riduur. Daughter to Rianna Organa and Gareth Darkhold.

Four places that held his allegiance. The Siskeen System, Atrisia, Manda’yaim, and Alderaan.
And he would answer the call.

Glowing blue eyes travelled his fellow compatriots deciphering words spoken and intent hidden within the words. He well understood what was at stake. Symbols. Morality. Promises. Violence. The threat of violence. And the precipice of war, not just of battle.

He caught the eye roll of Aurelian Veruna Aurelian Veruna and smirked. There was little love held for the Jedi. Few were allowed within Siskeeni space. Yet the words of Ala Quin Ala Quin held a truth he would not avoid. Damos Rennar Damos Rennar , the Bothan, spoke words that were plain and alarming. Maybe not for a warmonger such as himself, but for a Republic in the center of so many enemies and potential enemies.

His hand absently rubbed the stubble on his chin while glancing to the entrance of the noble Panteer Jocelyn Panteer Jocelyn Panteer and her husband Theron Alde Theron Alde as they took their place at the meeting. Chancellor Dominique Vexx Dominique Vexx earlier spoke words in the meeting that set a tone of general apathy to his mind. Shiny words that needed more teeth.
Too many diplomats kept a form of neutrality until the tide swayed one way or the other. Often fearing to be on the wrong side of history, or a majority vote.

Another smirk creased his face.
Perhaps he had spent too many years as a warrior to be a diplomat. Time would tell.

His gaze turned to Verity Stuyveris Verity Stuyveris as he considered her earlier words. Weak or feckless. Perception. And promises made. House Panteer or no, there was a decision that must come from this meeting. But more problematic issues arose from the other ideas of how to move forward.
Weak or feckless.

He chuckled under his breath.

Even the Jedi master Zark San Tekka Zark San Tekka spoke of driving into the core. A quick way to get yourself, and everyone involved, merc’d. He understood the ideology behind the thought. He also understood what the end result would be.
With a sigh he stood in the brief silence which fell across the room.

“It would seem we are chasing our tails here. From what I understand the votes are in, promises have been made, and allegiance on Alderaan has been formed. The only question is the how. How will we bring Alderaan into the High Republic fold.”

He paused for effect.

“Most of you do not know me. I am Muad Dib, senator of the Siskeen System. I have been Sith. I have been Confederate. I have been Mandragora. I am Mandalorian. I am Siskeeni. I am a man accustomed and made for battle. And what we speak of is war.
We are an island surrounded by enemies. We attack and push into sith territory, especially with Jedi, and we will unite the sith in totality with one goal. The destruction of this Republic.
We court mando’ade destruction with the involvement of a specific head of the sith. We talk about expansion, attack, driving a wedge into enemy territory and do not realize we are alone.”

His gaze flickered around the room.

“Fortify Corellia, we must. Naboo has a cushion of protection in distance that Corellia lacks. Even Siskeen lies closer to the border and we are willing to send fleets, soldiers, and humanitarian relief to the edge of our borders.
Alderaan will be brought into the fold, but do not fool yourselves into thinking the pincer of Republic influence will go unnoticed. Or unanswered.”

He pointed at the map.

“We cannot afford a war on multiple fronts. If we take Alderaan by force there will be a response. Tell me, what planets, what systems are we willing to lose?
I agree, Tython is a symbol. But it is a fool's errand. The Jedi are building their number and forces, but what worth is Tython if their blood is used to pave the way to that planet? What numbers of the Jedi will remain to even field that world after the multitude of death sacrificed to get there?”

He gestured with a dismissive wave of his hand.

“We need allies outside of the Republic. At the very least we need to cement trade agreements, diplomatic ties, real bonds before we go to war. Because the way it stands now the Republic will fall if we push, if we seek to expand into enemy territory.
We voted for Alderaan, and I stand behind that.
Yet for all the claims to be new, to be the High Republic, to not be held to an old standard is osik. You want the core because we always want the core. Who karking cares? We have border systems to reinforce. We have hunger in our own planets. We say we are stretched thin and then clamor for more thinning.
If we keep doing things the way they have always been done, do not expect a different result from that of our predecessors.
And here's a foreign thought. Why don't this group of diplomats try diplomacy first? I'm even willing to be part of the effort, even if it means death. You want to kill, rain down destruction, see the lives of a multitude of innocents die and the survivors displaced from jobs, homes, families in a war to free these people? Fine. My beskad is thirsty and I hunger to feed my madness. But don't pretend we are any different than those we oppose. The hypocrisy is real.
There are other paths to war, if we choose. Or not.”

He looked at the Alderaani nobles.

“We are not mapping the future of your home world. On this current course, we are mapping the future of our demise.”

He sat and slouched in his chair. In the current state war was coming. And untold death to millions. Foolish to think change could come from so many seeking blood.

"Duchess Panteer, a pleasure. In spite of what you may hear today, I assure you the Republic has the interests of Alderaan's people in mind." Though that could be taken different ways depending on how people read into it. Still, minimal bloodshed would be idea. The Sith, however, did not often leave much 'negotiating' room in that regard. Too often a Force Storm or Blackwing showed up as if the intention were to exterminate all life.

Dominique turned to look over at Aurelian as he seemed inclined to tout the Duchess' abilities. Admittedly, not a bad thing to do considering the previous contact invested in the world's fate was no longer available. Though, she did wonder whether the woman's skills would be enough. Refinement and diplomacy were admirable qualities for one from Alderaan. Qualities Sith did not place much stock in. Arguably their pawns on this world did, but Dominique suspected they would be more akin to Aurelian and herself rather than an upstanding and honorable member of court.

"Thank you, Senator Dib." Dominique nodded in the man's direction. "I had hoped there was someone that might have an equally passionate stance opposite the favored direction brought forth for consideration. Nothing is worse than all being in agreement with no regard for alternatives."

"That being true, our enemies are making plans expecting the Republic to do nothing. Many of our own grow restless with a seeming lack of response by this Republic against the encroachment of the Sith on worlds. Should we act because people are disgruntled? No. But the fact they are disgruntled is immaterial; the Republic must, at some point, make a stand."

"Diplomatic overtures have been made to various elements among the Sith. They continue to this day in the hopes of reaching an understanding. But make no mistake,"
Dominique looked at all those gathered, "even those open to humoring the notion of discourse would have no problem participating in the invasion of our worlds and the slaughter of our people. They are a culture of might makes right, and the strong survive. Any agreement between us is a temporary truce at best and, likely, a powder keg set to explode -- whether by the hand of someone on their side or our own in time."

"We will retake Alderaan. We will fortify Corellia and Naboo. And we will seek to intercept our neighbors' desire to draw a line across the stars. Our efforts to position resources and personnel for the inevitable will continue. And we will monitor the strategic movements of our adversarial neighbors, and strike when that is necessary because this Republic will not sit idly by as events out paces it. The protection of our people is our top priority; we will help those outside of our border in whatever way possible without sacrificing that."

The Chancellor looked to those in attendence meaningfully. "Now, we must discuss the means with which we secure Alderaan and its people."

Muad Dib's aggressive, cynical outburst provided a welcome spark of entertainment, shattering the stuffy atmosphere of the room. Yet the man's grim talk of demise and hypocrisy felt terribly dramatic. People who constantly worried about the end of the galaxy never had any fun living in it.

Chancellor Vexx handled the doom-mongering with her usual polished grace, acknowledging the dissent before firmly steering the conversation right back to reality. Her resolve pleased him. Dominique understood that a state could not simply cower in the corners of the galaxy forever, hoping the monsters wouldn't notice them. The decision was made. The debate on whether to act was over, and the time for implementation had arrived.

Turning his attention toward Lady Panteer, Aurelian offered a reassuring nod. The path to victory here lay through the bloodlines and ancient alliances of the court.

"Our immediate priority must be working alongside Lady Panteer to consolidate the loyalty of the Great Houses," Aurelian proposed, addressing the leadership core. "We need to actively garner widespread support for her claim to the throne. If we secure the aristocracy, we strip the Sith operatives of their political leverage on the surface. We cut off their supply lines before a single blaster is fired."

Glancing across the glowing star chart toward the Bothan spymaster, Aurelian gestured vaguely to the subterranean cavern surrounding them. The natural defensive advantages of the plunging canyon were immense, but they required teeth.

"Director Rennar, what exactly will it take to expand our military footprint within this sector?" Aurelian questioned, his tone sharpening into a rare display of practical focus. "Crevasse City is a tactical masterpiece. It shields us from orbital scans and covert sabotage. If we utilize this city as our primary staging area, we can quietly build a resistance hub capable of breaking the Covenant's grip on the planet."

Shifting his focus to the Jedi delegation, Aurelian let his gaze linger. The Order's hesitation to shed blood was a well-known liability, but this conflict required weaponized conviction, not just defensive shields.

"And to our esteemed Jedi protectors," Aurelian concluded, a subtle, challenging edge creeping into his dangerous smile. "What will it take for the Order to finally adopt a more assertive approach? We are fighting a plague. You cannot negotiate with a sickness, and you cannot cure it by holding your ground. If we are to rid the galaxy of the Sith, we need the sword, not just the shield."

Oh, she could see what Corazona meant now, again. The man was an insufferable fool. Colette gritted her teeth for a moment, tilted her head and instinctively stood up. Before she was any the wiser her mouth had practically already opened.

“The High Republic is a secular state. Jedi interference would have gone against the framework clearly provided to us by the Republic itself.” Colette felt a breath leave her body, as if shocked she had even said that much. And yet, “We have always operated within the bounds of the law, and what you’re asking for is clearly not what the current rules would allow us to do without becoming complicit in the murder of people holding beliefs that your own laws protect.”

“I respect the Republic’s decision to not include the Jedi in its inner workings, but don’t defang us and then expect us to scratch your back, Aurelian. We have many members who would love to take a far more proactive approach but who, under your current laws, cannot.”

Offering a tense smile towards Colette, Ala tried not to wince. She could see the younger Jedi's frustration with the King, and she could understand them. It had been clear to Ala for some time that King Veruna did not share in the adoration for the Jedi, but rather traded in barbarous side comments with an ease and fluidity that scarcely attempted to hide his disdain.

"I believe you will find several leading Jedi will be more proactive in future," Ala said calmly. It was a truth. The Order itself was in disagreement over how things would transpire. But no one here needed to know about that. It was best to lean into it, so that the actions of Lorn and his coalition would appear in line with the Order's wishes. Let the internal strife be internal only. Admittedly, it was a dangerous game to play.

"As for the majority of the Order," Ala said, a continued calm, "we will continue to provide assistance where we can...as we have in the past. But with the Republic posturing more aggressively towards outside threats, I must convey that the Order is still in the infancy of its rebuild. If we stretch beyond our means, we risk the tenure of the Sith's rule over parts of this galaxy becoming generational...we simply must take a long term view to this matter."

"And we will keep our own council on when ti involve ourselves."

"I do not relish seeing Alderaan as the epicenter of a military buildup," Jocelyn confessed. "My people have a history of pacifism, more inclined toward cultural pursuits than military ones. That isn't to say we are incapable of taking up arms in our defense. And of course, I will see to it that we do our part when it comes to facilitating the Republic's readiness for defense of not just Alderaan's borders, but the region's -- or, if the leadership deem it appropriate, an offensive into the Core."

Her voice, which had begun soft and warm, had by the end of the sentence become durasteel-plated and cool.

"I do not anticipate being liberated and protected by High Republic blood and treasure without contributing our own to the cause. Once I have assumed the throne, there are mechanisms by which I can levy tribute from the other Houses: troops, taxes, materiel. It will have to be delicately put and well-packaged, but I believe it can be done -- and successfully." She lifted her chin. "You will have everything you need if it is within my gift. And if further is required, my family has considerable liquid assets we can contribute to the cause. Simply tell me what is required."

Her eyes cut to her husband briefly. Only he would see the anxiety hiding in the shadows of her gaze. Jocelyn Panteer had committed to doing right by Alderaan and the Republic, even if it meant instigating a rebellion against her own reign. But that was not for the Republic to be concerned about today.

Her gaze moved past Theron to Aurelian Veruna Aurelian Veruna . "We appreciate your support. All of your support," she added, opening the compliment to include the Senate. Senator Stuyveris and Chancellor Vexx had also been champions of Alderaan's defense from the Sith Covenant. She suspected that not all Senators -- present or not -- would be comfortable with the delicacy of the diplomatic efforts inherent in gaining support for her claim to the Alderaanian throne. To some, it would look like cocktail parties and croquet games while the Core burned.

That was fine. Everyone had their own arena.

"And, of course, any thoughts you have as to achieving the goal would be well-received," Jocelyn added, nodding to Veruna, whose active participation with Duke Gant was of particular value.

Defence and Intelligence Council

Damos was not a talkative sort. He never had been. Even when addressed directly, most within the Republic's High Council had long since learned that an answer from the Director of Defence and Intelligence was as likely to be a low rumble from the back of his throat or the slow lift of a heavy brow as it was a sentence.

Today had been no different.

He had allowed the discussion to unfold around him. Plans were proposed. Opinions were offered. Arguments rose and fell. To many, his silence suggested distance, perhaps even disinterest.

They misunderstood.

Damos listened because listening revealed more than speaking ever could. Years as the Republic's chief spymaster, and before that as a general in the Naboo military, had trained him to read the room as carefully as he read a battlefield. Every proposal, every hesitation, every glance across the table became another piece upon the board. More often than not, he found himself thinking several moves ahead of everyone else.

Both the High Chancellor and Aurelian had already committed themselves. That settled the question of political will. There would be no need to fight for authorisation, only to ensure the machinery beneath it moved quickly enough.

"Director Rennar, what exactly will it take to expand our military footprint within this sector?" Aurelian asked.

A good question. Not whether they could. Only what it would require.

"We can have two fleets on the picket line within a week," Damos answered without hesitation. "I'm meeting the clone splicers on Naboo the day after tomorrow to organise division deployments." His ears twitched as irritation briefly surfaced beneath his otherwise impassive expression. "I can commit six regiments alongside those fleets. Enough to establish a credible presence until funding clears for the Corellian Ship Overhaul."

His gaze shifted towards Dominique.

That battle would be fought in committee chambers rather than among the stars.

Then the Jedi spoke.

Damos had always respected the Order. Long before they had become the Republic's guardians, when they had still been little more than exiles rebuilding from the ashes of the Alliance's New Jedi Order, they had stood where soldiers could not. They had bled on frontier worlds while the Republic was still finding its feet.

But respect did not exempt them from responsibility.

"With respect to the autonomy of the Jedi Council," he said, turning towards the Grand Master, "the Charter we all swore to uphold is clear. In times of crisis, the Republic may call upon every institution sworn to its defence; including the Jedi Order."

His eyes settled upon her. She looked exhausted.

"Were this not a crisis, we would not be sitting in this room."

Baiting the Jedi never failed to yield exquisite entertainment. Watching the younger mystic bristle and snap back about secular laws and defanging brought a delightfully smug curve to Aurelian's lips. He locked eyes with the Grandmaster, lofting a single, slow eyebrow in a silent, mocking query: Are you truly going to let your little student speak to royalty that way? The sheer lack of discipline from the supposed guardians of peace was fascinating.

Grandmaster Quin's predictable attempt to smooth over the cracks with talk of the Order's infancy and long-term views only deepened his amusement. Pacifism, long-term views, and bureaucratic hesitation were exactly how the Sith had managed to crawl out of their holes in the first place.

Fortunately, Lady Panteer possessed the practical grit the mystics lacked. Her transition from soft-spoken nobility to a cool, durasteel-plated promise of credits, taxes, and military leverage on the surface proved she was a true aristocrat. Aurelian offered her a subtle, affirming nod. Securing her throne meant securing a highly lucrative asset for the coming war.

Damos effectively ended the debate by laying down the cold logistics of fleets, clone regiments, and ship overhauls. The Bothan's final, heavy hand dropped when he invoked the Charter directly against the Jedi delegation.

Leaning back against the edge of the holographic table, Aurelian seized the momentum the spymaster provided, aiming his next words directly at the young mystic who had referred to him by his first name. How inappropriate.

"Director Rennar makes an impeccable point," Aurelian murmured, his tone dripping with casual malice wrapped in a smooth cadence. "The Sith are, historically speaking, a problem birthed from the Jedi's own inability to keep their house in order. They left their ancient nemesis unchecked, and now the Republic is forced to bleed to clean up the mess. If the Charter demands your compliance in a crisis, it would be exceptionally nice if you aided the effort instead of hiding behind the very laws that shield you from your own failures."

Oh, was that meant for her? Someone born countless centuries after the Sith and Jedi schism to take offense to? The only biting thing about it was the sentiment, and on that end Colette scoffed with a shake of her head.

"I'm excusing myself." She whispered to Ala without offering the grandmaster a chance to really say yes or no. She suspected they would both understand that it was for the best.

Colette left the room before any risk at diplomatic incident became a diplomatic catastrophe.
