OUT-OF-CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Fleet Name: Task Force Spruance
  • Classification: Rapid-response mobile fleet
  • Affiliation: The Galactic Alliance
  • Fleet Symbol: The Task Force has yet to earn a Fleet Symbol.
  • Description:

Task Force Spruance is a fast, second-rate rapid-response unit established in the wake of the Dark Empire's Operation Shadow Hand, commanded by Fleet Captain Isoroku Spruance. It is composed of isolated Alliance vessels picked up in its wake, as well as heavily damaged ships hastily repaired and brought back into service. Its ranks are a mosaic of outcasts—disgraced officers, zealous naval cadets, and other second-tier personnel—united around a core group of experienced but battle-worn veterans still recovering from their wounds.

Its composition is ever-changing as it rapidly moves across the galaxy, gaining and losing vessels during operations, with the only constant being Fleet Captain Spruance and his flagship, the ANS Vanguard.

The Task Force is broken into three sub-task Groups (nicknamed Taffys after their Fleet Captains' favorite treat), each capable of independent operation. Able to be quickly broken up and attached to other Task Groups to maintain mission flexibility. It can count on its many experienced starfighter pilots (even several aces) rescued from crippled carriers during its operations. Many of them are forced to operate outdated equipment drawn from deep storage or diverted from cadet training due to more modern Si Tech platforms being prioritized for battlegroups of better repute. However, through political intrigue and family connections, Spruance was able to muster a small but highly advanced group of starfighters for some of his best pilots.

Despite its flaws, Task Force Spruance can count on a rapidly improving and determined crew backed up by a large number of veteran starfighter pilots and disgraced but experienced officers.
SOCIAL INFORMATION
  • Headquarters: ANS Vanguard
  • Ports of Call:
  • Goals:

Formed to counter the devastating losses inflicted by the Dark Empire's surprise attacks and the Sith Orders' offensives, Task Force Spruance is designed to shore up vulnerabilities along the frontlines quickly. Due to its often-viewed expendable nature and the fanatical eagerness of its crews to atone for their perceived failures, the Task Force is often selected for nigh-suicidal operations.

  • Reputation:

Many members of the Alliance often mock Task Force Spruance due to its second-rate nature regarding its a the dreg of dregs. The ramshackle appearance of its damaged ships and disgraced crew have given it the derogatory nickname "Senate's Bootscrapings." However, these misgivings often fade away after the Task Force's almost suicidal tactics and crew willing to take on all but the most impossible operations yet still coming out on top.

Outside the Alliance, they are far less known and often spark confusion since many of the ships that make up its ranks have been reported destroyed multiple times.
COMPOSITION INFORMATION
THE FALLEN
MEMBERS
  • Fleet Captain Isoroku Spruance - Leader of Task Force Spruance and Captain of ANS Vanguard
    • Spruance was considered one of the best Admirals the Alliance could produce. Despite coming from a family of influential senators that had made their wealth from the droid sector he was considered by her peers as down-to-earth. His speciality was his calm and ordered manner even in moments of supreme crisis, not even tolerating yelling on his bridge. He was also famed for his endurance, having to go through multiple staffs in a day as his youthful energy outpaced them all.

Spruance was given command of the 3rd Alliance Battlegroup during Operation Shadowhand. However during the naval engagement over Tython his calm demeanor shattered when he learned that his fiancée had perished in battle. He fell into a panic attack and froze unable to give orders or constantly countermanding his own as they were sent out. His lack of command at this critical moment led to his Battlegroup being totally annihilated by Imperial Forces.

Only Spruance's blue-blood and recent losses in senior personnel saved him from ejection from the Alliance Navy. Instead he was demoted of his rank of Admiral in a humiliating ceremony and pushed into commanding a second-rate Task Force bearing his name. He is haunted by his failures over Tython, falling into secret alcoholism and self-hatred. He believes that he deserves to die after his use to the Alliance has been exhausted. Yet despite his fall some parts of the excellent Admiral still remain and he genuinely cares for the men under his command.
  • Commander Znorraph Shakevoa - CO of ANS Radiance of Meridian and Taffy 1
    • Tired of the discrimination within her Clan, Commander Shakevoa left the Rodian Homeworld in search of a meritocratic society and a cause she could believe in. She found both in the Galactic Alliance, quickly rising through the ranks and nearing an appointment to Supreme Commander Von Sorenn's staff. However, on the eve of her promotion, she was accused of embezzling military benefits intended for the families of fallen GADF soldiers. Though never formally charged due to lack of evidence, the scandal left a permanent stain on her career, halting her advancement. Like many disgraced officers in the Task Force, she seeks redemption through battle, willing to die to restore her honor.
  • Commander Tamon Jellicoe - CO of ANS Admonisher of the Void
    • Much like Fleet Captain Spruance, Jellicoe was caught up in the wave of court maritals following the Alliance defeat at Ziost. He was charged with failure to perform his upmost duty in evacuating the 76th Pathfinders resulting in their annihilation. He was stripped from his rank as Captain and demoted to Commander. He is despised by many members of the ground forces for his actions at Ziost and his position still remains precarious within the Navy. A cunning opportunist he is willing to do anything to get his career back on track even if it means sacrificing his dignity and the lives of his men.
  • Commander Mitscher Halsey - CO of ANS Promethean Doctrine and Taffy 3
    • Due to the Dark Empire's opening blitzkrieg in Operation Shadow Hand, local Alliance forces near the core found the ranks of their senior staff being devastated. As a result many inexperienced commanders and cadets were pushed into roles entirely out of their depth. Halsey was one such leader having barely gotten his commission when he was thrown into the role of captaining the ANS Promethean Doctrine after its previous commander defected to the Dark Empire. Surrounded by a disheartened crew blackened by higher Alliance staff due to their old leader's betrayal, Halsey must whip his men back into shape while keeping an eye for potential Imperial infiltrators in their ranks.
  • Senior Lieutenant Hrurrng Jhidrors - CO of ANS Righteous Indignation
    • A former member of the Empire turned turncoat, Jhidrors was part of an influential Imperial family. While considered an excellent corvette commander repeated investigations by the SIA into her loyalty have stunted her chances of rising through the ranks. She hopes through her service that she may prove her dedication to the Alliance cause.
  • Senior Lieutenant Cruc-cruc Kandiz - CO of ANS Truth and Reconciliation
    • A newly minted CO, the Gungan Cruc-cruc is regarded by his men as a klutz and second-rate at best. But he is still widely respected for his humor and willingness to share in the crews hardship.
  • Lieutenant Dagho'bek'frurnett - CO of ANS Mantua's Law and Taffy 2.1
    • An outcast from his own kind, many suspect Dagho'bek'frurnett of being behind the illegal executions of corsair and pirates during his time commanding patrol craft on the outskirts of the Alliance. His men regard him with both fear and respect as the iron disciplinarian keeps his ships in excellent shape. Many joke is hushed tones that on his ships the airlocks serve a double purpose as brigs.
  • Lieutenant Traghonn Vird - CO of ANS The Weeping Somnambulist and Taffy 2.2
    • The Trandoshian Vird often butts head with his lifelong friend Rhohiwdawrrhi, a Wookie and his second-in-command. Vird is considered highly agressive and has been commended for his bravery bordering on recklessness making him an excellent picket commander.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION

In the wake of Operation Shadow Hand, Alliance naval elements near the core were thrown into complete disarray. Multiple fleets were either devastated or their elements scattered. It therefore fell on now Fleet Captain Isoroku Spruance to rally whatever forces into a rapid-reaction Task Force he could use to counter the Dark Empire's advance. However due to his recent failures over Tython he had lost Alliance High Command's favor and was forced to use whatever was left of his political influence to collect the navy's bottom of the barrel. He was only able to draw to his side officers that had similarly been hung out dry by Alliance Command and fresh naval cadets rushed through training.

He only managed to scrounge up outdated or severely damaged starships to compose his fleet before they were thrown into several engagements against the Dark Empire.

With front has quieted down his forces were transferred over to the Galactic West where the Task Force participated in the Battle above Woostri against the forces of the Sith Order. Kainate Forces had deployed the super dreadnaught Mon Mors against Alliance Supreme Commander Amelia von Sorenn. Spruance and his fleet found himself arrayed on the flank of the fight. When former Alliance senator turned traitor Madelyn Lowe moved her fleet to intercept transports attempting to board of sabotage the Mon Mors, Spruance made the decision to move his Task Force in to engage. His initial attack went well, allowing the transports to carry on with their mission and even destroying a rare Sith intelligence fleet, however the combined firepower of Lowe's capital ships combined with supporting salvos from the Mon Mors quickly saw the Task Force take losses quickly.

In an effort to remove Madelyn's flagship from the equation Spruance moved the ANS Vanguard escorted by the Blissex Frigates Radiance and Admonisher into attack formations. However his withering assault was interrupted when the Sith superlaser Penumbra mounted on the Mon Mors was activated. Despite not being a target an errant beam from the unstable weapon struck Spruance's flagship and disabled it. The flagship was believed dead in the water until ten minutes later it came back online - displaying unusually high and anomalous power readings - and resumed the assault on Madelyn's flagship. The ANS Vanguard would then cripple the Sith Star Destroyer under a fusillade of point-blank salvos, finishing off its engines with a direct strike from its Proton Beam Cannon. Reports from other ships in the Task Force report that during this incident that attempted contact with the Vanguard returned only screams over the comms-network. What transpired in those ten minutes on the Vanguard will never be known.

Despite the destruction of Lowe's Fleet, Task Force Spruance saw itself far too damaged to continue and was forced to disengage. It would be unable in any way influence the rest of the battle or support the ANS Starhammer's attack on the Mon Mor's Penumbra. The Battle over Woostri would eventually end in an Alliance defeat.

Analysis of the Task Force performance during the engagement would be mixed. Historians would note that the Task Force performed exceptionally well given the unfavorable odds it was thrown into. However they would also question Spruance's decision to launch an attack against Madelyn's fleet relatively unsupported. While it was true that her intelligence ship was collecting vital data on Sorenn's fleet communications and her combat elements were actively threatening alliance transports, the true threat of the latter has been the topic of heavy debate. While transports would have indeed been destroyed if not for Spruance's interference the vast majority had already boarded the Mon Mors. Spruance's eagerness to entangle himself so deeply into the battle may have been attributed by his desire for redemption or even death.

The truth will never be completely known as after Spruance's mysterious disappearance, the Galactic Alliance's would destroy all records of his personal correspondence.

The battle saw devastating casualties for the Task Force. Taffy 2.1 and 2.2 had been virtually annihilated. Every single ship in the Task Force had suffered terrible damage. Starfighter pilot casualties were also high. A suicidal Sith attack on the carrier Promethean Doctrine saw it breach the hangar doors and detonate inside, killing dozens of pilots refueling and rearming. However the remnants of the Task Force would not have a chance to fully repair as barely several weeks later the battle of ____ began, seeing Spruance forced to rush whatever he could muster back into the fire.
