As a professional videographer, I tend to always have a critical eye towards fan films. While still recognizing them as the incredible efforts of very passionate people, I still always find things wrong (it's my lot in life). Whether it's the production value, story, writing, or acting, something can just feel off to me. Production value can certainly be high for a fan film, but I tend to find writing and story lacking in a lot of them.
All that being said, my favorite is probably... Star Wars: Downunder.

Maybe it's because of the fact that it's mostly a comedy and I don't take it as seriously, but I've felt that in terms of the writing, acting, dialogue (the biggest thing that always gets messed up in fan films, I believe), combined with production value, this is the winner for me.
There are of course other great ones out there that have already been mentioned (Darth Maul, Legacy of the Force), and a few that have great production value (the Han Solo one comes to mind, as well as a few that have to do with stormtroopers or rebel commandos.) Also, I haven't seen every single one out there, and they're being made all the time - there could be an even better one out there.
Anyways, that's my spiel. I usually like watching the *really* bad ones though... just for laughs.
