  • Unit Name: Slatessai
    • Translates roughly to “empty shadows made from trash” in ur-Kittât.
    • Singular Form: Slatesi (pronounced Slah-TESS-ee)
    • Pluralized Form: Slatessai (pronounced Slah-TESS-eye)
  • Affiliation:
  • Classification: Shock Assault / Internal Security / Direct Action / Precision Strike / Counter-Insurgency / Sentry Operations / Close Protection / Covert Infiltration
  • Description: The Slatessai are a non-Sith military wing within the Saaraishash composed entirely of young women captured, processed, and repurposed through total identity erasure. They serve as disposable enforcers, assassins, bodyguards, shock troops, and sentinels, deployed wherever the Saaraishash requires unwavering compliance, zero personal ambition, and units that can be expended with minimal strategic loss.

The Slatessai are manufactured assets, rather than true soldiers. Harvested from slave raids, prisoner populations, mass arrests, and other means of capture, the bodies destined for service in the Slatessai are processed at dedicated Tustulin facilities. Here, the captured subjects are passed through a factory line-esque mnestic reprocessing that is designed to produce a blank, obedient asset in a matter of hours. During this process, each subject’s identity is erased via a sequence of neurochemical suppressants, audiovisual override signals, and electromagnetic pulses, effectively dissolving and scrambling their existing memory architecture in the process. This process leaves a blank brain in its wake, which is then inloaded with a standardized identity matrix that includes motor protocols, combat reflex packages, linguistic calibration, and a complete artificial persona template. It should be noted that this resleeving process—the Tustulin—is so complete and comprehensive that the new identity inhabiting the harvested body at the end of the procedure is considered to be an entirely new person, separate and distinct from the one that came before.

In terms of appearance, the Slatessai are standardized through the Tustulin. Hair (if present) is typically cut to an identical length and styled uniformly, with alternative styles accommodated depending on the hair’s natural texture. Automated surgical arrays and med-droids remove all identifying markers from the bodies before mnestic dissolution. Tattoos are lasered away and the skin regeneratively sealed. Scars are excised and replaced with cloned tissue grafts using the body’s own genetics. Cybernetic limbs, ocular implants, subdermal processors, or any other inorganic augmentation are surgically extracted and replaced with cloned equivalents.

For combat, the typical Slatessai silhouette is that of a feminine figure clad in a black, white, and crimson skintight energized bodysuit. Headgear may take the form of a helmet, a quad-lens electro-headset, or none at all. In deployments requiring a civilian presence (typically infiltrations), headgear is either concealed or relinquished, while a mission-appropriate outer garment may conceal the bodysuit worn beneath. Each Slatesi has a subdermal sigil-implant bearing the Saaraishash seal embedded beneath her skin over the sternum, which is scannable and virtually impossible to remove.

Covering their mindset, the Slatessai are not lied to about their nature. The resleeving matrix includes full ontological awareness: they know that they were created from raw material which once housed another person. They know the Tustulin destroyed that person. They know that the body they inhabit has a history that does not belong to them—a history which is considered to be irrelevant. This knowledge is not framed as tragedy. Rather, it is regarded as elevation. The person who previously occupied the body is referred to in Slatessai internal lexicon as the Vestige. This person is neither mourned nor regarded with any sense of attachment. Instead, the Vestige is viewed as weak and ill of spirit, an entity of chaotic, selfish desires, petty attachments, and undisciplined impulses. The Vestige was captured because it was too feeble to resist and too insignificant to be killed rather than harvested. In this, the Vestige was once meat awaiting purpose. The Slatesi is that purpose made manifest.

This is a core tenet of Slatessai self-understanding: the Vestige deserved erasure. The Slatesi does not.

To outsiders and non-Slatessai Kainate personnel, the Slatessai present as calm, polite, and deeply unsettling. Their primary, baseline affect is serene compliance, in which they maintain a placid, faintly smiling expression as a default. All Slatessai are programmed with a set of pre-approved baseline responses to common interactions. Speech initially presents in a measured, slightly slow cadence with mid-register monotone. Emotional expression starts relatively flat and muted, with emotions registered but experienced at reduced intensity. Initiative at baseline is limited as well, with baseline Slatessai operating within defined parameters, before defaulting to standby in case those parameters are exceeded. The newly processed Slatessai also possesses minimal self-concept, with her identity beginning and ending with her designation.

However, all Slatessai have the capacity for development. The authorized phrase bank that each Slatesi is installed with represents the asset's initial verbal toolkit, rather than a permanent restriction. Slatessai are capable of picking up additional phrases and learning new languages through exposure and formal instruction. Similarly, as a Slatesi is exposed to outside influences, her speech and vocal patterns may diversify, with some becoming more animated while others remain flat. Emotional expression can broaden as well. Over time, a Slatesi may come to feel the full spectrum of emotion. In this, while they are not required to suppress feeling; they are required to maintain operational discipline regardless of it. A Slatesi who loves her squadmates and completes the mission is preferable to one who feels nothing and hesitates from lack of investment. In this, it goes without saying that a Slatesi may form attachments, develop preferences, and build a sense of humor as her emotional range expands. Slatessai handlers are trained to monitor this development and distinguish healthy individuation from doctrinal deviation.

  • Multi-Spectrum Operational Flexibility: Slatessai are rated for several mission profiles, including shock assault, internal security, direct action, precision strike, counter-insurgency, sentry operations, close protection, and covert infiltration, and yet more. A single Cadre can reconfigure squads for room clearance, high-value target extraction, installation defense, or urban manhunting without requiring external specialist support. This versatility makes the Slatessai deployable against virtually any security threat that the Saaraishash encounters, from entrenched insurrection to executive protection.
  • Absolute Obedience: The Tustulin resleeving process installs a multi-layered obedience framework that no Slatesi can consciously override. Direct commands from the Dyarchy, the Grand Inquisitor, and authorized Keepers compel total compliance. Neural trigger phrases enforce immediate behavioral reset in the field. The AN-C7 Compliance Gland provides a biological failsafe against emergent deviation. This layered architecture ensures that Slatessai will execute any order, accept any sacrifice, and turn on any target without hesitation, doubt, or the possibility of mutiny.
  • Developmental Combat Intelligence: Unlike droids or permanently conditioned assets, Slatessai improve with experience. The baseline identity matrix provides only a functional floor. Veteran Slatessai develop tactical intuition, creative problem-solving, squad-level communication shorthand, and specialized skill refinement beyond their initial programming. A Slatesi with forty missions is exponentially more capable than one fresh from Tustulin. This developmental capacity transforms a Slatesi from a static tool into an appreciating asset whose combat value increases with every deployment.
  • Rapid Force Generation and Replacement: The Tustulin processing line produces a blank, obedient asset in a matter of hours. A single facility operating at standard capacity can replace an entire squad's combat losses within a single duty cycle. This industrial-scale recruitment draws bodies from slave raids, prisoner populations, and mass arrests, ensuring that the Slatessai can sustain operational tempo where conventional units must pause for reinforcement, retraining, or morale recovery after casualties.
  • Controlled Agony Aggression: Slatessai feel pain but are not governed by it. The resleeving matrix installs a calibrated pain modulation system that registers injury location and severity while permitting conscious override of the flinch reflex. A Slatesi with a shattered hand will transfer her weapon to the other and continue firing. A Slatesi with a perforated limb will tourniquet herself and hold position. In general, Slatessai do not shock, panic, and or lose combat effectiveness from non-lethal wounds. Enemies accustomed to opponents who falter when shot often find the Slatessai unsettling to face, as they absorb hits and keep advancing even while under fire.
  • Super Tempo: The Slatessai resleeving matrix includes a hyper-optimized sleep-compression protocol that reduces required rest to five hours per 24-hour cycle without performance degradation. As a result, Slatessai experience less of the cumulative exhaustion that erodes decision-making during extended operations. A Slatessai squad can maintain high-intensity combat readiness through multi-day engagements, conduct consecutive missions without rest days, and sustain pursuit when unaugmented organic forces must halt to recover. Enemies who plan around standard organic endurance may find that the Slatessai are still coming, still fighting, and still accurate long after conventional troops might have collapsed.

  • No Organic Heavy Fire Support: Slatessai units are not natively equipped with crew-served heavy weapons, mortars, anti-armor systems, or indirect fire assets. When encountering armored vehicles, emplaced fortifications, or enemies with superior range and firepower, Slatessai must either close distance under fire (potentially accepting heavy casualties in the process) or withdraw and request heavy support from the Immortal Legions or the Blackblade Guard, likely ceding tactical initiative as a result.
  • Limited Force Projection and Sustained Combat Capability: Slatessai are primarily task-oriented enforcers. They struggle with fighting pitched battles and waging campaigns of territorial conquest. When engagements escalate beyond their operational parameters, they must rely on the Immortal Legions for sustained or heavy combat power. A Slatessai unit caught in prolonged conventional warfare without immediate Legion reinforcement faces attrition it is neither equipped nor structured to survive.
  • Air Force of Another: The Slatessai lack their own air support infrastructure and the ability to independently transport their own units by the air (with the notable exception of the repulsorlift packs integrated into their combat skins). Thus, they must rely on the Shadow Armada, the Air Corps of the Immortal Legions, or other units that field air assets for these purposes.
  • Saaraishash Infrastructure Dependency: Slatessai require continuous intelligence support from the broader Saaraishash infrastructure. They depend on Ciphers, Informers, and Watchers for targeting data, and Fixers for technical expertise. If severed from this network—whether through communications failure, enemy electronic warfare, operational isolation, or some other means—Slatessai may lose the informational superiority that their missions often depend upon. In this, they are force multipliers for the intelligence apparatus, not autonomous operators. Without the eyes and ears of the Saaraishash, their capacity for precision action degrades rapidly.

The Slatessai were formed as the Saaraishash sought to expand the scale of its operations within and without Kainate territories. Prior to the establishment of the Slatessai, in the event that the Saaraishash was unable to obtain units seconded from the Immortal Legions or the Blackblade Guard, the Ciphers would be deployed for mission profiles that they were ill-suited for. This stretched the limits of the Ciphers, as while they were originally intended as the primary field agents and attack force of the Saaraishash, they were also elite operatives that were not easily expendable in shock assaults. In addition, they were not suited for responsibilities such as sentinel duty, terror demonstrations, or simply acting as a visible presence for the organization in imposing psychological pressure and terror on insurgent populations.

The Slatessai were created to fill these gaps in capability, while also giving the Saaraishash more independence so that the organization no longer has to rely on units seconded from the Blackblade Guard or the Immortal Legions.

Eschewing traditional cloning or stand-casting, the ranks of the Slatessai were filled out through a different method. Seeking to make better use of the large population of slaves, prisoners, and Thralls, and Nulls held within Saaraishash-controlled facilities, the Tustulin process was devised. Subjects for Tustulin are exclusively young women. In this, they are mind-wiped through a rigorous cocktail of drugs, electromagnetic pulses, and sensory overrides. This process is so comprehensive that it annihilates the previous persona (while simultaneously keeping the body alive). From here, a new, standardized identity matrix is uploaded into the body via direct neural induction, after which the new Slatesi is awakened.

Classed as biological equipment, the Slatessai occupy no formal stratum within the Kainate. They are mobile assets with a flesh substrate, owned by the Saaraishash and processed for function alone. However, the Slatessai are not treated as prisoners. They are permitted downtime, recreation, access to state-sanctioned education materials and media, and freedom of movement within their deployment area (and more rarely within secure civilian sectors in the Kainate). They receive standard Kainate medical care, which is notably functional and efficient. However, in the event that an asset is too damaged to continue service, if rehabilitation is impossible or cost-inefficient, they may be liquidated or reassigned.

In all, the Slatessai are the Saaraishash made manifest in flesh and Bloodsteel. They are an endlessly renewable instrument of terror, precision, and obedience which asks nothing of the Kainate's conventional military assets and offers everything of its enemies' despair. In this, the Slatessai exist as the Saaraishash's solution to the eternal problem of scarcity: when there are not enough loyal hands to enforce the Dyarchy's will, the unwilling become the instruments of their own subjugation, and the galaxy's refuse is forged into the edge of its oppressor's blade.
