OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: 'Fix' unmarketable fauna by altering their natural instincts.
  • Image Source: Organic Abstract by Zak Katara.
  • Canon Link: N/A
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: N/A
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Manufacturer: The Globex Corporation
  • Affiliation: The Globex Corporation
  • Market Status: Open-Market
  • Model: AN-C7 Compliance Glands
  • Modularity: Significant. Can adapt to most fauna. Can be formed within fauna by altering their DNA with specialised retroviruses.
    • Compliance Glands can be paired with cybernetic receivers to allow them to be activated/calibrated without using pheromones.
  • Production: Mass-Produced
  • Material: Fleshy Bits.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Organ
  • Size: Very Small
  • Weight: Very Light
  • Resistances: Compliance Glands are soft and squishy.
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Compliance Glands are implanted or 'naturally' formed (in fauna bioengineered to form them) organs designed to domesticate the fiercest of beasts. They were initially designed for Globex's 'zoo world' plan - as such, entire ecosystems can be outfitted with them, allowing the beasts native to them to be manipulated with pheromones, e.g., regulating their mating seasons to control population sizes. The most invasive use is the so-called 'safety pheromones' - once released, all Compliance Gland hosts in an area are temporarily paralyzed to control a situation.
  • Compliance Glands were designed to suppress predatory urges and render even the most fearsome of predators situationally docile; rancors made pettable, in other words. This is still Globex's favoured usage of the glands, though it is entirely possible to put them to alternate use, e.g., using them to make monstrous attack dogs friendly towards allies and especially aggressive towards hostiles.
  • Compliance Glands can conceivably be used on sentient beings, but this would violate the Terms of Service.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
  • Compliance Equals Pleasure: Compliance Glands manipulate the behaviour of the host through hormones, serotonin production, and other biological variables. A typical example would be a vornskr producing seratonin when petted, a petting only possible because of the repression of its predatory instincts as far as humanoids are concerned. 'Safety pheromones' can be used to force all hosts in a large area to 'freeze'.
  • Defiance Equals Death: Compliance Glands are often designed to flood the host with lethal or incapacitating neurotoxins if destroyed.
  • 'Dumb Beasts': The more intelligent the host, the less effective the Compliance Gland - doubly so if the host knows about the gland.
DESCRIPTION
Nature is wonderful, beautiful, and marketable. Unfortunately, nature can also be cruel. Fortunately, it can be brought to heel by high technology.

Having already determined that biospheres can be reshaped through terraforming and weather patterns kept palatable by technological means, the Globex Corporation set out to deal with one of the last hurdles on the path to a perfect(ly marketable) ecosystem - the fauna. The initial plan was to simply only include herbivores, but even herbivores can be hostile towards consumers and those same consumers often think predators are 'cool'.

The Compliance Glands were the solution to this last hurdle - they can be implanted via surgery (suitable for exotic pets) or inserted into the DNA of a species with specialised retroviruses. This last approach is heavily used by Globex in its terraforming projects - by ensuring that all specimens on a planet have the genome (by killing or 'fixing' every specimen that doesn't), the populace will remain compliant indefinitely.

Should mutations result in new specimens with faulty Compliance Glands, the glands will usually self-terminate, killing the specimen in the process. By quickly, efficiently, and automatically euthanising faulty specimens shortly after birth, consumer safety is ensured.

Certain groups have expressed concerns about Globex's 'ecological gentrification', but they are not consumers - their opinions are irrelevant.
