It was still something to see. The Shadow Temple. It had been some time since he had been here, but it was the same as he remembered. Connel had stayed away from the Shadow Temple for a while but was back because he needed to be. It was a place of knowledge he needed to access and a place where he could find the answers he sought. The place was quiet as it should be on the outside but inside it was bustling with activity, similar as it was when he frequented the place.

One of the reasons Connel stayed away was because it was left in the capable hands of Desbre Gensan Desbre Gensan and Milya Vondar Milya Vondar . They were more than capable of running the place and, and frankly, he didn’t want to be around either of them much. It was nothing personal, they were lovely, to be sure, but they were closely related to Father. He did not want to be reminded of that for a long time.

Now? Not so much.

After the operation in Rwookrrorro, he had been on the move for awhile. The Shadow he ran into Allyson Locke Allyson Locke , she was potentially on her way, and he was not sure he could trust her with the location of the place. So the … was he a Shadow now? Was he a Guardian? Was he a Shadow Guardian? Not important right now, Connel was needing to make preparations that would be needed for what was to come. She may want to come see the place, but he had to make sure the place would not be compromised.

That was not the only reason he was here. Connel was here for one of the holocrons that was left behind in the vault. It was one his father had recorded, about the nature of the Force and its connection to life … in his own special way of speaking.

The rhythm of it was the only thing that mattered when she trained alone. No opponent to read, no conversation to navigate, just movement. The lower halls of the Shadow Temple were well suited to it. Wide stone floors worn smooth by years of use stretched beneath the soft glow of ancient fixtures, the silence broken only by the quiet cadence of measured footsteps. Milya had claimed the space as her own most mornings, moving through familiar forms with practiced precision. Every strike, every shift of balance, every measured breath flowed into the next without conscious thought. Long before she had become a Jedi, she had been taught that combat was a language, and languages dulled if they were not spoken. It was in the middle of one such transition that she felt it. Something familiar. The motion settled naturally as recognition followed.

Connel.

It had been a long time. The last time she had seen him, they had stood together at Caltin's funeral, saying goodbye to the man who had brought all of them together. Afterwards everyone had gone their separate ways, grief carrying each of them in different directions. Milya crossed to the nearby bench, reaching for the cloth she had left there to wipe the perspiration from her hands and face before making her way toward the entrance corridor. Whatever had brought Connel back, he had found his own way here. That alone told her something had changed. Whether he had come seeking answers, knowledge, or simply a place that had once felt like home, she couldn't yet say.

When she rounded the corner, she found him much where she expected, standing in the familiar halls as though reacquainting himself with them. Her eyes found him before he noticed her, reading him the same way they had been trained to read every person she met. The set of his shoulders, the balance in his stance, the unconscious way he carried his weight. It was instinct. An Echani listened to movement before words, and there, buried beneath the years since they had last met, she caught the familiar echo of Caltin in the quiet confidence with which he carried himself.

"Connel."

Her voice carried easily through the corridor, calm and assured. "It's good to see you." She closed the remaining distance at an unhurried pace before coming to a stop a few paces away. Her gaze settled on him, reading the familiar language of posture and movement before finally meeting his eyes. "I wasn't sure we'd see you again." Her eyes lingered for another moment before drifting toward the halls beyond him. "What brings you back?"

He had been here so many times before, but today felt different. The air was thick with anticipation as he made his way through the bustling halls of Shadow Temple, it was not the same as it was originally built. Once a beautiful representation of the harmony between man and machine, now it is almost unrecognizable in its current state of technological advancement. It made him realize how much of an outsider he really felt that he was. This was not a negative feeling, but rather one of awe and respect for the progress that had been made. This just was not his home anymore, it was theirs, and that was okay.

What were once simple corridors had transformed into sleek, futuristic passageways lined with holographic displays and advanced security systems, reflecting the rapid pace of technological evolution within the place itself. As he walked, he couldn't help but admire the seamless integration of organic and mechanical elements, a testament to the ingenuity of those who had pushed the boundaries of what was possible. He never bothered to notice when the original Temple was in operation and did not want to think about it when this was being built over it. It was all too painful a reminder of the past, that day on Coruscant where he watched his father die in front of him. Make no mistake, he loved his father very much, and is proud of his legacy as well as honored to carry the name of Vanagor. He just felt like there was a part of him that was left behind, a piece of his heart that could not be replaced by the advancements around him.

He couldn't shake the feeling that he had missed something. While the Temple had continued to grow, adapting to new challenges and new generations, he had remained absent. It wasn't that this wasn't what his father would have wanted. If anything, Father would have welcomed it. It simply reminded him that life had continued moving forward while a part of him had remained standing on the streets of Coruscant.

Today was different. For the first time since Coruscant, he wasn't returning because he had to. He was returning because he had finally chosen to. He wasn’t the boy going on adventures with his Father that was really his Padawan training in disguise. He was not the young Knight who did not grow up around other Jedi, but on Midvinter, and on around Wookiees on Kashyyyk. He was a Master in his own right now, he was a part of something greater than himself, and he was ready to embrace that part of his life again, scars and all.

He needed that Holocron and that this was not “his place” anymore, he knew it like the back of his hand and knew exactly where he needed to go to get what he needed. With a deep breath, he steeled himself for the task ahead, determined to honor his father's memory in his own way, by embracing the future and making his mark on it. He must have been in deep thought as he was not attentive to a presence he had felt, vaguely familiar, one he had not felt in a long time and really had only come across once. Milya Vondar, one of the two he had trusted with the facility. Just sitting there on a bench. Oh, Hi Milya.

Offering a tiny smile, his thoughts were indeed elsewhere. She would be able to sense his memories of the place and his reticence about it, but she would also recognize the determination in his steps.

When she had mentioned how she thought he would never return, his response was simple yet polite and heartfelt. I’m always around. It wasn’t meant to be boastful, but rather a statement of fact and a reassurance that despite the changes, he was still connected to the place and its people in some fundamental way. Truth is, I wasn’t sure that I’d be back… but time has a way of changing things, doesn’t it?

He was thinking of his father, how he would always say that life was full of unexpected twists and turns, and that it was important to adapt and move forward.

The Force has a sense of humor…

It’s good to see you as well. We never had the chance to talk properly after that first meeting, did we? That is on me. I was not ready then and I am here now. He sighed. I just never truly felt ready to come back here until now. I came originally for a holocron of his he let the words hang… That was the plan at least… and I still need it, but … He started looking around, almost nostalgic. ... The funny thing is I’m not in much of a hurry anymore… I guess Father was right… The Force really DOES have a sense of humor.

The grin was unmistakable, or it would be for her at least. For the briefest instant, the years would seem to peel away, and standing there was not merely Connel Vanagor, but the quiet echo of the man who had once walked these halls before him. The resemblance would fade as quickly as it came, leaving only Connel... but the memory would easily linger.
